    This movie has one of my favourite bits of dialogue in a Disney movie:
    - "When will I see you again?"
    - "Oh, never, never!"
    - "Never?!"
    - "Well... maybe someday."
    - "When, tomorrow?"
    - "Oh, no - this evening!"
    I think the people at Disney, here at least, were more conscious of themselves than they seemed. It's like they knew that the "prince and princess" characters could be a bit unbelievable, so they gently made fun of it a little.

      There's an even better one later, I'm paraphrasing:

      Phillip: Oh come, Father, you're living in the past! This is the 14th century!

    The fairies are NOT the side characters, they are the MAIN characters. They have the most screen time, they raise Aurora along with casting the loophole in the curse that will allow her to wake up, put the whole castle to sleep when Aurora goes into a coma, they free Philip and give him the tools needed to defeat Maleficent, so in a way they helped defeat Maleficent. This film should of been called The Three Fairies and Sleeping Beauty.

  • @ChibiTails

    I read that Maleficent being snubbed at a party wasn't just about not being invited, it's that the other fairies WERE invited and she was explicitly excluded. The human kingdom was a neutral party in the conflict between the two groups, and when Maleficent wasn't invited it was an implication that the humans were now taking sides. Thus, her enemy.

    • @acerbicon
      @acerbicon 6 років тому +21

      Exactly! It was literally the King and Queen's fault for not inviting her OR taking her up on the offer to humble themselves for the slight. I mean, if they'd wanted things to go smoothly they could have just not invited ANY of the fairies and it would have been fine. Then again, if they'd wanted things for their daughter to be outstanding, they could have invited ALL of the fairies, who would then proceed to one up one another with giving Aurora better and better gifts as a matter of pride.

    I LOVE the artwork in this movie, it's so beautiful :o As for Maleficent, not being invited to one of the biggest events was one of the biggest insults during that time period. While her motivation is weak nowadays, it was well warranted back then.

    • @Charlie-hl7jr

      How I interpreted it---it was all about power, control, and a LOT of ego on Maleficent's part. I got the impression that she saw herself as the REAL ruler of the kingdom and by snubbing her at Aurora's christening, they were basically saying that they don't really acknowledge her as their ruler and master or even acknowledge her at all----so she decided to make an example of the king and queen and send a message that she's here and she's the real power in that kingdom, and if you're going to insult her then there will be harsh consequences.

    I'm certain this has been said already, but the movie becomes much more enjoyable once you realize Philip and Aurora aren't quite characters, they're more like McGuffins. The real main characters on the good side are the fairies. Philip and Aurora are just proxies for the conflict between the fairies and Maleficent. Maleficent is and always will be my favourite Disney villain, because I remember being four watching this, and being scared shitless of her. As I child, I was never afraid of any other Disney villain. Something that I also think lends to her presence, is that she's never comical. There's not a single moment she's goofy.

      +alguemalguem Finally someone else views the fairies as main characters besides me! I'm surprised more feminists don't take into account that the fairies are the ones that drive the plot, not Aurora or Phillip, if it weren't for the fairies, Phillip wouldn't have been able to escape the dungeon & he wouldn't have defeated Maleficent without the help of the fairies so it's really the fairies that save the day.

    Definatly one of their best. I just don't think you should consider the title character and the prince as the main characters though. The fairies are the heroes of the story and Maleficent is the villain. All others are side characters. Maleficent is certainly the best villain they ever put to film, and I always loved the start with all those knights and nobles arriving at the castle, really capturing that sense of the romanced version of the Medieval age, just like those tapestries its art style is based on.

      Willem Verheij true, but Aurora and Phillip are also incredible and stand out to me as a new take on the classic fairy tale couple, with the princess being allowed to NOT be ecstatic about learning she's a princess (and thus, that her life is a lie and parents aren't really dead) with a prince that is more rounded and has a likable personality- one that makes you actually get why the girl falls for him so easily.

Hell, they do pretty much all the work for the prince! They free him from the dungeon, they give him his weapons, they make sure nothing falls on him, they even cast a true strike on his sword so he can kill Maleficent! Not to mention Aurora would be straight up dead without their magic instead of just in a coma, and everyone in the kingdom would have had their hearts broken because they wouldn't have been asleep to be kept from the truth before everything was solved. Like okay, they also accidentally revealed where they hid her in the first place, but come on, they already went way out of their way to keep her hidden from the start! Chatnoir 77888 Of course you can't compare Philip's character to the Beast's because the difference is massive. I just think (as the previous comment said) Philip is a little bit of an improvement on the earlier princes, and was (for me at least) a more interesting character than Aurora, who was just there. You're right though, the development in disney characters (princes and princesses), even this days, is a little bit hit and miss. Beauty and the beast was amazing whilst The Little Mermaid characters were really flat.

      You don't have to like Aurora but women don't need fast paced action scenes or tomboyish personalities or whatever it is people think heroines need to be a good character. I myself relate to Aurora more than any other DP besides Pocahontas. She's poised, curious, very dreamy, wears her heart on her sleeve, sly, does the right thing of serving her people over running away or throwing a fit when confronted with her royal heritage like some other DPs might do. I actually wrote an analysis of her MBTi personality type on funkymbtifiction because there's a lot to work with.

    "Sleeping Beauty" is one of my favorite 5th Disney animated film of all time and I absolutely love it. As a kid, I was terrified of how dark this movie is because of the evil witch and how scary it is. Now as a growing adult, it was amazing and this is a better fairy tale that it could imagine of how great does this movie still offers. Maleficent is one of my favorite Disney animated villains right near to Frollo from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and her evil scheme is impressive much better character than the piece of shit "Maleficent" which sucks so bad that it failed to make her character even more. Sometimes the side characters like the princess and the prince were low, but they're pretty interesting and how quiet does the romance makes it work. I love the fairies, I love the artwork, and how dark does the climax works with great action scene and how "Sleeping Beauty" works with a nice ending and everything is fine and that's that. Overall, one of my favorites and amazing.

    Doug, I'm surprised by such a superficial analysis. You do know your precious Frozen only gives Elsa about the same amount of screen time as Rose, right? And yet Elsa is still so underdeveloped, especially next to Rose. We learn she's a romantic who is a little too confident in her dreams, sly, responsible, philosophical and observant (noting a pattern with the birds and wondering if there's a connection there with her own life), and selflessly chooses duty over ~following her heart.
    Phillip too, it's bizarre Doug doesn't see his obvious personality! The guy is a free spirited dreamer who (rather impulsively) picks love over politics and is far braver and more respectful to women than princes today like Flynn and Kristoff.
    The problem with fans today is they judge movies on a very shallow level and expect them to be as modern and slapstick as today's with character's whose personalities the movie informs you about, rather than trusting the viewer to see. Which is why these people complain all she does is "sing and sleep". Did they not listen to any of the dialogue? Observe the body language? Do movies really need to tell us how a characters feels or what they're like in the most obvious manner?

      Even as a kid, I couldn't stand Phillip. He was so boring, bland, and useless. He was the love interest and nothing more. Hell, the guy couldn't even sword fight to save his life. He just swung it around aimlessly. It was the fairies who killed Maleficant, seeing as they cast a spell on the sword at the end that ensured a death blow. I really couldn't stand him. Aurora had more development, albeit not too much more. I never liked her feet, too. They reminded me of Barbie dolls, lol.

    • @MrMrMrprofessor
      @MrMrMrprofessor 5 років тому +3

      I'm sorry, i disagree. Aurora just...isn't interesting. I think people read way too much into her. She spends almost all of her screen time fantasizing, dreaming, and monologuing about a man. She meets a stranger in the woods, dances with him, and then cries (twice) when she can't be with said stranger she met five minutes ago. She shows no concern for the fairies, meeting her parents, anything else. She just shuts up for the rest of the movie and sobs over the fact she can't be with her "true love", which seems to be her only motivation. And then she's a prop for the rest of the movie. Literally, that's all she is at that point. The fairies are the more interesting and unique characters, and Aurora is more of a plot device. She is the "prize" that the rest of the characters fight over. She's a static character, she has no agency whatsoever, and any screen time she has is dedicated to her finding her "true love". The fairies are the true heroines of the piece, not Aurora. It baffles me whenever people say Aurora is the strongest of the classic Princess' when Snow White and Cinderella have so much more personality than her. They both of course want true love, but they don't spend all of their screen time talking about it. Snow White is concerned for her safety, and taking care of the Dwarfs. Cinderella hopes for a better life, but also focuses on working hard and is thankful for what she does have.
      The reason the writers didn't give much to Aurora is simply because she is not the main character of them film, despite being the "title character". Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather are the leads, opposite of Maleficent as the main antagonist. Aurora is a pivotal point of the plot, but she's just not a strong character. So when people don't like Aurora, it's not because they're stupid and they don't understand that she's a "complex" character. It's because she's uninteresting on almost every level.
      Her design and voice actress are fantastic though, so props to that.

      @@MrMrMrprofessor I agree with most of what you said but you lost me at "she's a prop for the rest of the movie...she has no agency whatsoever" simply because I distinctly remember the choice she made after the fairies tell her the truth about who she is. After meeting Philip and telling the fairies about it, they tell her they can't be with this random guy she met in the woods because she's promised to the prince because she is actually a princess. She is clearly very upset by this because it's all very sudden news and she'll never see this person that she believes is "the one" ever again (of course, not knowing him and the prince were the same person). In the scene, she literally just got back from their first date and was head over heels, so she was really shot down on what was presumably the most exciting thing to happen to her up to that point. (remember, teenage girl raised isolated in the woods) Yet despite the news, she very clearly makes a choice to go with the fairies back to the castle, accepting her role as a princess, which means marrying someone else. Again, clearly upset, but regardless she makes that choice. Remember that scene where the fairies put the crown on her head and she starts crying? What I'm saying is that it was clearly shown that Aurora was going to accept her new life and role gracefully even though she really didn't want to, this is the "selflessly chooses duty over following your heart" thing OP was referring to. I agree it's mostly motivated by finding her true love but there was definitely some agency involved. It's a small character moment though, after those scenes she definitely is a lot more like a prop (having Maleficent's curse come true before she is introduced to this new life) and she wakes up to find that the handsome guy she met in the woods is the prince so she never actually has to deal with the consequences of choosing duty over love. Problem solved, fairy-tale style. She was a false protagonist in a movie named after her and the fairies are actually the main characters. She isn't developed enough, she isn't the focus, etc. I wouldn't read too much into her or call her complex. However, there was something there, at least some kind of effort to give her a character.

    • @MrMrMrprofessor
      @MrMrMrprofessor 5 років тому +1

      @@princesssamantha1208 I think people read too much into that specific moment, as if to say that one moment instantly makes Aurora a better character. But we never see her make this choice, and she just spends every moment after that just following the fairies and going along with the plot. When she has no agency, i mean that her decisions don't really affect or change the story much in the grand scheme of things. She could just be going along with the fairies because she feels she has no choice in it, and judging by her sobbing about it...I don't really think she is "gracefully" accepting the position of princess. I mean...again...she cries over a man she met for barely 5 minutes. She finds out shes a Princess, she can finally meet her parents, and shes had three loving and devoted foster mothers caring for her this whole time. Her despair over not getting to go on a second date with this stranger comes off as oddly...shallow? We never get to hear much about how Aurora feels about this bombshell of news outside of "but what about my daaaaate???" Her reaction to being a lost princess is...oddly subdued. All she cares about is this random guy. It comes off more as selfish than an acception of duty. When I say agency, I mean Aurora's decisions and choices don't really affect the story very much. The fairies make the decision to hide her, the fairies send her out to go pick berries and thus she meets Phillip on accident, the fairies take her back to Stefans castle, Maleficent leads Aurora to the spinning wheel etc. Etc.
      When i say she's a prop, i mean she is more the object the fairies and Maleficent fight over rather than a character herself. This isn't fully her fault. Sleeping Beauty does even less in the original fairy tale so Disney really had very little to go on. All things considered, Sleeping Beauty is a very uneventful fairy tale. Creators really struggle to find things for the Princess to do, because she spends most of the story as a baby, and then the other half asleep. But I digress. I can see why some people would interpret that moment as a decision of strength and duty on her part...but her overall reaction to this whole situation just comes off as kind of shallow to me.

    This movie was a technical marvel more than anything else. I think the film was made on 70mm film, which is freaking huge. It's the same film that Ben Heur was filmed on, so Disney could draw a lot more than in previous films. Also Cinemascope was a thing, and that was pretty much Imax of the 50s, so Disney had to cash in somehow. The film even still holds up today in most places.

    I just re-watched the movie this week & it’s still one of the most beautiful of the prime years of Disney; particularly the work of Marc Davis on Maleficient (he created many of Disney’s iconic villains during the golden age). The environments are all detailed and distinct from each other. I can’t disagree with Doug’s criticism with the character writing since there’s not too much dialogue for major sections of the film, but the writing for the main trio and Maleficent makes it enjoyable.

    I'm a guy but there's so many great memories I have attached to the original Sleeping Beauty, and its remained a very personal film for me; mainly because I spent my first three years in a childrens institution (e.g. "orphanage") and one of the only VHS tapes the building would ever play for the resident kids was a Spanish-language copy of "Beauty." And so when I was finally adopted for years the only movie I wanted to rent at the video store was SB, which was like watching it all over again because it was in English - but I loved every thing about it, especially the meeting scene in the woods. Looking back though, yes, I can see where some of the complaints about it have merit. Part of the problem is that Walt himself wasn't as invested in the project as the animators would have liked him to be (by this time more focused on Disneyland, television, live action films, etc.) - and so they found themselves working on an overly ambitious project without much sense of direction, because animation was not the studio's only medium anymore. The result from that lack of involvement is that - at times - it feels like watching three separate, completely different movies; the Fairies, Maleficent, Aurora/Phillip all seem to occupy their own distinct universes and they only barely intersect (Maleficent doesn't "talk with" the Fairies, she talks "at them"; Phillip never exchanges a word "with the Fairies" rather they just show up and start helping him; Aurora interacts with the fairies a little but then spends the rest of the film mute). And that works if its meant as work of art, maybe meant as homage to the original ballet or similar to a three-act opera, but it also results in the film coming off as cold and distant at times, not unlike Bambi. And even that wouldn't be a turnoff if it didn't contrast with the fairies' comedic "December Bride" antics. Saying that, I still love the film, its just funny how having such a personal connection to the film you can overlook all those things and just love it anyway. Maybe that's why I had such a huge problem with the Maleficent movie lol

The animated story at least had great side characters and stunning visuals.
