Cinderella isn't proactive because she's a survivor: she eventually gets out of a shitty, abusive situation while having survived it. Which is good.

Not only did this movie save Disney from bankruptcy, but it jump-started the Clyde Geronimi era, which may be my favorite era of Disney movies. Yes, I know he worked on Ichabod & Mr. Toad, Melody Time, etc. prior to that, but to me, this is the true beginning. Also, this still remains the best Tom and Jerry movie ever made.

As a kid I always found her to be so incredibly important. I dealt with a lot of bullies in my life- one being my own sister. I was a child I couldn't escape- much like Cinderella was a young girl in a time period and country that would eat her alive for being homeless and alone.
Cinderellas perseverance, patience, and refusal to give into the depression of her situation leaves me awe inspired to this day. To me she didn't wait around to be saved. She wanted one night to be happy and a memory to hold her through the misery to come. And she more than earned that Fairy Godmother giving her that.
I also liked to think the Prince and Cinderella talked alot that night. I liked to imagine the grace and poise she had built up in her hardships charmed the prince.
Cinderella is just so incredibly important to me as a model of holding your own and finding your own happiness in the darkest of times- even if that happiness is just a song to sing as you work.

I like that Doug aknowledges Cinderella's patience, but I don't view her as being un-feministic I think her and Snow White are actually great role models and stronger than they're made out to be. They're two girls who have had everything they could have ever wished for who have lost everything, including their families, and are forced into maid roles against their will, yet they both have it in them to be positive, patient and see the bright side of things. I don't know how many of us would still be kind and graceful in situations like that, I know I'd probably be moping all the time.

It used to bother me that Cinderella didn't do anything. But as I grew up, and looked back on it, I realized exactly what a strong character she is. She grew up in an abusive household, was patient, continued to believe in herself, was able to stay positive, and managed to leave that abusive environment. Not only that, but in the sequel she was able to forgive her abusers. That was really something that changed the way I saw this movie.

I actually like this movie, it holds a special place in my heart. Mostly because of the beautiful art, but also because it gets unfairly hated on so much. Cinderella isn't really a terrible character. A little bland, but she was kind, patient and hardworking. She was also pretty realistic about her situation. She even said in the film that if you wanted a bed to sleep in you better let go of your dreams. She falls in love with the prince pretty easily, but it is a fairy tail.

I completely agree with him. When I was a little girl, I admired Cinderella for her kindness, patience, and optimism. I admired her for being polite to her stepsisters and stepmother, even when they were being cruel to her. I think that's an important lesson for anyone: never stoop to their level and be the better person. Those are lessons and virtues that I abide to even today.

I don't see why people hate Cinderella as a character. I think she is really cool! She has a lot of patience and tries to see the good in everyone. All she really wants is a pretty dress and a night off from her work. Never once did she say that she wanted love or a prince until she actually figured out that who she was dancing with was the prince. I don't know, I might be a bit biased, but I love Cinderella!

you know what's sad? After playing Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, I found that Terra and Cinderella had better chemistry and a stronger connection than Cinderella had with the prince. The prince was mostly interested in her looks, and it took a dance for them to fall in love. Whereas Terra was there for Cinderella after her dress was ruined, he protected her from the unversed three times, and they seem to have rather cute moments together. They would probably have had a better relationship (not to mention that terra has more to him as a character)
I am not a character shipper, nor do I wish to be, but this was an interesting idea that came to my attention.

I think what makes the step mother such a great villain was somewhat representative of the way some mother-in-laws would treat their newly wed wives. The wives would get the short end of the stick in terms of affection compared to the mom-in-law's own family, the wife would be driven to exhaustion through household labour with little to no appreciation, which I can very much relate to what my mother experienced. I don't mean to generalise this experience but this is what makes the film(and the Disney story book, which was what I read as a 5 year old) so interesting to me as an adult today.
It did represent certain stereotypes among many families at the time, hell even through the 90s when my mother had to deal with my paternal grandma. I wonder if my mother actually kinda liked the book but didn't think I would read it because it was too girly(I had that boys stuff only phase) but yet again with Disney, I appreciate their film a lot more as an adult than when I was a Disney crazed boy.

Having recently rewatched this movie for the first time in decades, I was surprised at what ended up being my favorite element of it, something the Critic didn't even mention:
The characters of the King and the Grand Duke, ESPECIALLY for the scenes where it's just the two of them interacting with each other.
These two guys were so freaking funny and entertaining to watch in every scene they were in! They were like an Abbott & Costello- esque comedy duo, with the Grand Duke being a great "Straight- man" to the King's over- the- top outbursts.
The best use of them is DEFINITELY the scene that takes place the morning after the Ball, in which the Grand Duke has to wake the King (Who saw Cinderella and the Prince seem to hit it off well, but then retired to bed before midnight and grimly warned the Grand Duke that he'd be beheaded if anything went wrong) and inform him that Cinderella got away but they still got the slipper. The scene starts on a cute note with the King having a happy dream in which he's playing Horsey with his imagined future grandchildren, then when the King awakes and the Grand Duke nervously sets out to break the news to him, I found myself laughing my butt off literally the entire scene! In particular, near the end of that scene, the unexpected use of the famous "Goofy yell" had me, grown man that I am, straight- up SHRIEKING with laughter!
Heck, those two could have made a good spinoff movie! Just that one viewing made them easily one of my all- time favorite Disney duos!

    • @alexp.d3689
      @alexp.d3689 5 місяців тому

He's got a point though, the remake has many flaws in it's writing that people overlook cause she has more time with the prince ( which is way easier to pull off in live action than it is in animation , ESPECIALLY during Walt's time ... )
To give you an example :
The reason as to why them meeting before the ball in Ever After works is because they got rid of the whole " who's this mysterious princess at the ball ... " which later on when she gets revealed it turns into a plot point when Henry feels betrayed and demanded she leaves ( the sneaked in the mystery woman angle with the sister's gossiping about this countess the prince has been spotted with ,the Film is very cleverly written. ) in the fairytale turn's out to be Not a princess but a mere dirty scolury maid ,in Perrault's the prince falls in love with her natural charisma and kindness which she displayed though her interactions with the sister's at the ball ( Perrault's version is drastically different from Disney's in terms of characters and themes ) and her being found to be the opposite of what everyone expected is a commentary on society and how good manners are what makes a princess not a mere title ( Anyone can be a princess sort of way ) ... In Disney's L.A.R. from 2015 he KNOWS her social statues because he meets her earlier on and Recognises her at the ball which creates a problem because he knows she's of low social station therefore the number of girls that have to try the shoe is significantly lower and makes him seem kinda stupid since in this case he'd be looking for a servant not a noble woman, also the subtext the story has about 17th century society is gone ( in Perrault's version she literally traspasses cause only people of statues were invited not the common folk , which makes her more rebellious " screw societal norms I'm gonna have my self a good time " ,makes the Stepmother not allowing her to go more reasonable " I won't have you embarrassing us Infront of high society and my peers ... 🧐", and as I said earlier makes the ending more of a twist for the characters in the story since Cinderella was out of suspicion to be the one,she was allowed to try it cause .. why the fk not 😂😂😂😂 )
Also the Stepmother finding she's the one as well as the glass slipper in the remake comes out of nowhere and doesn't flow nearly as well as in the original, as Dough pointed out after she gets locked up she doesn't even TRY to escape and is overall too peppy and cheerful to the point of obnoxiousness .The scene with her mother's dress also comes out of nowhere because they cut the scene where she makes a bargain with the stepmother, In fact Lady Tremaine makes it very clear in the remake that she WON'T GO right after she asked to be allowed to attend ( during this scene in the original she's she comes across as confident, strong and defiant ,while in the remake she has the exact same soft-spoken meek demeanor she has during the entire film, she's way blander in the remake )

Cinderella has gone on to become one of my favorite Disney characters. I think she often gets misread because people just assume she’s waiting for a man. She is not, she just wants an evening off and happens to fall in love. Just because she doesn’t carry a sword or fight doesn’t mean she’s weak. I think she’s a deeply kind and caring person who is trying to make the best of a horrible situation. The moral courage to be abused for years and to still find it in herself to be a kind person is incredible and is something I want to strive for. Plus she’s not passive in her situation she tries to defend herself when Lady Tremaine accuses her of putting the mouse in the cup, and she takes agency where she can. She defends the mice and birds and Bruno from Lucifer and Lady Tremaine. Plus those are the ones who end up helping her, so it’s really her kindness that leads to her escape. I really think people need to rewatch this movie and observe all the actions of Cinderella because I think people would find a kind and strong character in her.

"Cinderella" is a classic fairy tale film and it was great. Yup, I used to remember watching "Cinderella" tons of times and yes, we used to make a "Cinderella" puppet play in elementary school and it was good old times. Anyways, the film basically talks about a servant girl was forced to clean up everything with her dreadful Stepmother (nicely voice by the actress who did Maleficent in "Sleeping Beauty") and her two stepsisters until her fairy godmother grands her wish and dances with that boring prince who only wants a exotic blond girl instead of hideous women and her goal is to keep her dreams come true and hoping that it could be her miracle. That's what I know about this movie and so does the 2015 live action version up which is very well done movie like the animation did. It's a nice fairy tale movie with colorful backgrounds and a nicely design of Cinderella with a pretty dress and her motivation is good. Overall, classic animated film.

I loved the grandduke in this one! And Watso videos theorized that the fairy godmother had the slipper alter its size at will. The chase scene was marvellous. But I did find the king having grandbabies on the brain quite disturbing. Just because he wanted grandkids, he pressures the prince to get married when he just got home from whereever the hell he was and who knows for how long. And the stepmother unleashing the stepsisters to tear Cinderellas dead mothers dress was almost violent for a kids movie. All we needed were scratches & bruises. In the 3rd film when Lady Tremane shatters the slipper, she holds her staff under Cinderellas chin as if she threatening to beat her. This implied physical abuse to her childhood since the narrator said "she was abused, humiliated, and FINALLY forced to become a servant in her own house."

While I do think Cinderella is okay,I consider it to be a return to form to the roots of Disney’s Snow White and Walt’s return to making full-length animated stories after a series of brief episodic cartoon films he made in the 40’s after WW2 came along, since while Cinderella despite being a damsel, was a nice servant girl who would put up with the people around her and still remain kind and enjoy her life,Lady Tremaine,Lucifer, and Anastasia and Drizella were all great and entertaining villians, and funny moments with Gus,Jaq,The King, and The Duke. Out of all the 50’s Disney animated movies, while Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan were my most favorites of the 50’s era for being fun and entertaining to watch and Lady and the Tramp was legit beautiful and outstanding, Cinderella(along with Sleeping Beauty)was in a mixed bag of mine, since despite having a few flaws and the original usual princess formula, they still had great moments, likable characters, and memorable timeless songs. Cinderella III was a amazing improvement over the flaws of the original and the other sequel, originally planned to be a TV series.

I think the question of whether the social messages of the film are a product of the film's time or something that makes the basic story incompatible with "modernity" can be pretty well demonstrated by watching non-Disney-influenced versions of the story, especially movies from before the Disney version came out. For example, 1938's Mamele is pretty much immune from all the criticism generally leveled against Cinderella. A Molly Picon vehicle taking place in then-contemporary Lodz (right before Germany invaded) and likely derived more from the Brothers Grimm version of the story than the Perrault version Disney popularized, the movie depicts a strong protagonist (she successfully bluffs an armed gangster) whose specific virtues bring her salvation and a relationship with a "prince" (actually a newly ascendant local musician) that makes a lot of sense. Most of the themes are about perseverance, knowing when to assert oneself, and appreciating those who help you (rather than outright hostile, her family is just a bunch of ingrates). Also, all the women work, and it's just taken as a fact of life because this was the prewar middle class, and the only non-Yiddish one sees in the entire movie is a few Hebrew prayers, a sign in the background, and a single Polish loanword.
Going even further back, one can look at the story of Ruth, which is a very similar narrative to the folktale and has similar themes of virtue bringing good things, but also shows Ruth's disposition directly causing her good fortune and an over-current of economic geopolitics.
As for the glass slipper, one has to remember that glass has no give and was made bespoke for her. It's basically a direct cast of her foot.

The fact that pretty much anyone could fit the shoe is actually addressed in the movie itself. The king basically says that “Fuck it, the Prince promised it and now he will have to marry the first girl that fits”. It's kind of twisted, but this part of the story is about the King wanting to have grandchildren, seemingly without regard to the Prince's feelings.

Funnily enough, the animated animals likely were purely filler since they did not come from the source material at all and were there to make the fairy tale last long enough to be feature length, similar to what Disney did with the Snow White's dwarves who had no personality in the classic tales and were not named at all. Disney's source materials were sparse, so they added in filler to make the film long enough for theatres.

+iHeartRyanStiles Especially after the sisters tear up the dress. The Walkers said in their Vlog for the new one that that scene is the closest Disney has ever gotten to a rape scene. And they're right, judging by the way that scene is paced and edited. Good Christ, is this scene way more fucked up than I remember it - you can actually feel this innocent character being violated.

+deonta thomas I actually really dislike most Ghibli films because of the recycled character designs, cringeworthy characters and voice acting, and just plain weird plots. The only film of theirs that I love is Grave of the Fireflies and I also do like Spirited Away. It's really all about taste. I like Disney and Pixar infinitely better, and I hate when people try to present a studio as factually superior.

I think Doug makes good points here. Theres not too much to Cinderella as a character, but she did maintain a lot of patience. I dont really see it as her waiting around for dreams to come true. Its more like the classic saying "good things to come to those who wait." Okay, maybe that didnt make much sense lol
The other good point is with the Prince. I really dont like the message of the story itself. You see this woman, dance with her and decide that she is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with? Just... ugh. But overall, thats my only gripe with it. I still watch Cinderella from time to time and I still enjoy it.

Is it bad that I'm a guy and I like the films from Snow White to Sleeping Beauty, even when they are all about princesses?
I don't know why but, I love the art of the vintage films and I want to say that Fantasia, Bambi, Cinderella, and Lady and the Tramp are part of my favourite Disney films.
I don't know if I'm insecure or embarrassed because, guys should be tougher and like action and violence and any film geared towards boys regardless of time era. In my mind, guys shouldn't like Cinderella at all or like Lady and the Tramp; Peter Pan was for boys and that's all they got. That's my thinking. Am I wrong on this?

The problem with this film is not that it is antifeminist; the problem is instead that it teaches the same thing the actual fairy tale teaches: be nice and don't do anything for yourself and life will eventually get better. You see that more in classical editions, specifically Perrault's and the Grimm Brothers', but the issue is still inherent in Disney's Cinderella because tears, although they allow a release of emotions, do not summon a fairy godmother to take away the woes of life.

    • @binbasesatoktayyldran5236
      @binbasesatoktayyldran5236 3 роки тому

Idk Cinderella was always a strong Female character imo. And I didn't get any of that message that your talking abou when I was a kid. I got the message that even tho life maybe tough always look on the positive and work hard. Also I'm sick and tired of all of these movies being called antifeminist. Not everyone has to be super strong and get a weapon and fight. Falling in love with someone isn't a bad thing and isn't being weak. Cinderella for how she grew up and the condition's she was in was a pretty strong character. Like is every man in a movie super strong? Nah not really. Yet we don't bitch about that. It's not a bad thing to be emotional and polite and nice. Modern feminism finds everything offensive tbh so I can't say much.

+Bender B. Rodriguez That's in the 19th century German version. The presence of Godmother, pumpkin, and glass slipper very obviously show the Disney version to be an adaptation of the 17th century French version. There is an even earlier Italian version, but that one seems to concentrate more on Cinderella's father.

Yes they did ,and It was kinda disappointed for me cause the remake has a lot of flaws they didn't brought up and focused too much on " BUT IN THE REMAKE THE PRINCE HAS MORE SCREEN TIME ... ! 🤪 " which is good and all but makes him look stupid cause in the remake he knew she wasn't nobility ( both when they first meet AND AT THE BALL ,and If I recall correctly during their first meeting she tells him that she's called Cinderella ...
" It's by royal command and under harsh penalty if not be done that the maiden named Cinderella should present herself to his royal Highness at once " Problem Solved ... ) and yet tried the slipper on woman that should've been disqualified because THEY'RE NOBILITY while the girl he was looking for was a COMMONER ,also, in Perrault's fairytale the ball was an exclusive event for the upper classes ,no common folk allowed .In Perrault's version she comes off as rebellious " Screw societal structures I'm gonna crash that party and have himself a good time" , Perrault's version is drastically different from Disney's 1950 version in terms of themes and characters If they had done some research they could've put the elements missing in the 50's version ( like the story revolving entirely around Cinderella's relationship with her sister's ) .They made a reference to Grimm's Aschenputtel with the completely POINTLESS addition of the brach Cinderella asks her father to bring her back from his trip ( in Grimm's it turns into a magical hazel tree which is the fairy godmother equivalent in Grimm's ) surely they could've added things that were left out from Disney's original film LIKE THE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT DYNAMIC IN CINDERELLA AND THE STEPSISTER'S RELATIONSHIP ... !?!?!
      😩😤🙄😒☹️🤪😁
This film is such a missed opportunity ,all of the Live Action Remakes really ...

I actually joked on the Once Upon a Time facebook page after the live action film came out that, Why do I have a feeling that Lady Tremaine will be the big baddie next season, considering that the success of Malificent brought her back to Once. Well luckily for me Disney's most overrated princess was underused on Once
