I think some people have shaky hands or need glasses and accidently clicked the wrong button. I doubt there are that many people so jealous of such informative and intelligent instructional videos.
I've been working on car off and on since the late 60's and I'm here to tell you Hiram is a rare breed to share his vast experience that others covet and treat as a secret.
I admire his openness to offer his knowledge that took him a couple of decades to acquire. It no doubt took a lot of sweat and busted knuckles along the way too, so give the man his due.
I have learned more from just watching his videos than from taking class after class learning about transmissions.
I only started dabbling in the Automatic Trans rebuild about 10 or 11yrs ago and still don't consider myself proficient. Hiram is probably the best I've seen going into such detail and explaining the different aspects of what to watch for and why.
For anyone to click the thumbs down button it has to be accidental.
Keep up the outstanding videos Hiram.
I concur wholeheartedly! God bless you brother😅.
Sharing all his knowledge where other guys keeps them as trade secrets. There are lots of knowledgeable guys out there, but one thing very nice of you is you share unconditionally, very generous, the world needs people like you 👍👍👍👍👍
This is what a truly skilled mechanic looks like. Great video.
My exact thoughts
Hiram, I am a licensed aircraft mechanic and worked for a major airline and I can honestly say I have never worked on anything that complicated. You are a highly skilled mechanic. Thank you for posting this, god bless you, and I wish you the best
thank you so much for what you do they were charging me 1700 to do my transmission and i look at ur videos i bought the rebuilt kit for 249 bucks i just went for it and actual did it thank you so much and god bless you bro..thank you
Was it that difficult. i can anything. water pumps, head gaskets, alternators, to suspension work. i wanna get into trans work
@@DL-qq4nu It's not hard work but it's tedious and there's lots of special tools you will need which aren't expensive but are NECESSARY. Piston compressors, snap ring pliers, seal installer tools, a bushing driver kit and the list goes on. If you don't have a clean work space and take your time and take pictures and take notes and be methodical, you'll lose parts like bolts, check balls, clips, seals, etc. You'll learn real quick that the idea is to work in steps and work on 1 assembly at a time.
Joe good for you. I’m in the research phase now. Have an old truck I’m going to keep forever lol need to know how to keep it alive
Can anyone out there who has watched, commented or liked this transmission tear down tell me what is wrong with an instructional video like this on UA-cam? The Customer is charged for a complete tear down and assembly because of a wiring problem! Had the technician stair stepped his diagnostic evaluation correctly, he probably would not be rebuilding transmissions at this stage in his life. NEVER, NEVER NEVER get complacent! Always use your head to think things through.
chfar072281 lol too late once it’s pulled and on the bench. The wire issue could have caused other damage. Better to get it all fixed up right.
But yess sadly way too many misdiagnosed jobs. But that’s the nature. Pay more for labor and have a chance at better skills
Your Excellent transmission Videos have caused me to gain confidence and come out of retirement and tackle a few new transmissions like the 4L60E and the 4R75W. I would really love to see a video on the re-assembly of a 4L80E. what I have learned is this one takes many more special tools than does the 4L60E and I know you are excellent at rebuilding with as few special tools as possible. I hope you can post a new Video on the 4L80E soon. thanks again from a big fan in San Antonio TX.!!
Hiram, You rock! I'm extremely impressed with your speed and knowledge. Great demonstration of skill brother!!
Great teacher. Its guys like this that made me better a mechanics. Salute
Call me weird, but I watch his videos for entertainment. He never ceases to impress me!
Nice work and thank you for sharing. Videos like this are a huge help in demystifying the auto trans. I'm currently contemplating a 1976 Pontiac Turbo 400 that has 35,000 original miles on it and has never been opened. It sat for a long time and slips when it's cold. Gonna build it for a 500+ HP engine.
I want to say thank you! Watching the 4L60E video allowed me to rebuild my trans myself. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I can not thank you enough sir!!! You are a scholar and a gentleman.
This is an AWESOME video and if you follow it closely, you WILL have a good 4L80. I added a couple mods that I needed for my 4x4 and have a KILLER STUMP PULLER.....Runs the highway at speed without a sound. GREAT TUTORIAL!
Thank you so much. I have rebuilt many manual transmissions, but never have done an auto. Y just gave me all the confidence I need!ou
Thanks for taking the time to explain and demonstrate how to take it apart. Great Video.
Hey Vato... Very good disassembly technique and efficiency! Professional and positive tambien. Keep representin' and being a role model for these youngsters! Peace
I cant get my complete geartrain @ 22:00 out. Comes 3/4 the way then stops. I have been fighting it like a dog???? :(
Thank you Mr.Gutierrez for sharing your knowledge for free.
Oh, hi, thanks for stopping by with your time. I wasn't expecting a response, just complaining, lol. Yea, I think it is that band as I have the fittings out. I will probably brave the cold and dig into it today to check it out, thanks.
hola hiram primero que nada felicitaciones por tus videos e aprendido mucho y sobretodo perdi el miedo viendo tus videos. gracias ati ya empese a recostruir transmisiones en mi taller gracia gracias.
Wow, amazing to watch a master at work, no wasted movement on your part.
The man works like a pro.
That hose is about to bust near the Quick Connect fitting wish I was there to see that . None-the-less good video
Thanks for these videos. I built my first 4l80 would've taken much longer for me to figure it out without your help.
Awesome info . Thank you!!
Excellent video brother! I just found a couple of items I missed, which may help me recover from my come-back
Wish me luck as I go into it again . .
I’ve been watching a lot of videos on this and yours is my go to. I’m about to attempt this today. But I’m just switching the guts into a good case.
Goes to show you that once you spend the money and time to get the transmission out and opened up, its best to do a complete rebuild as its financially the best solution. Install all wear parts and a Transgo mild shift kit to make changes to the OEM flaws.
This is a quick, informative video awesome information. Very good for training. I salute you.
all those who clicked on the thumbs down thought it was the download button.
I liked because of the lack of a love button. no question, he has clearly demonstrated his level of intelligence and expertise
Anytime!
This IS an IDIOT-PROOF build .....I THOUGHT , until I saw the thumbs downs....so, at this point, I can be sure there are AT LEAST 52 idiots out there.
Irredeemable Deplorable Can anyone out there who has watched, commented or liked this transmission tear down tell me what is wrong with an instructional video like this on UA-cam? I'm studying these videos. I've got a '95 Chevy 2500 that I've retired as a work truck because of a bad transmission (which I'm hoping to be able to repair for my home use), and a '98 3500 dually that's probably a few years away from needing a transmission overhaul.
Thanks for a helpful video, I'm not transmission guy so I had someone else rebuild my transmission, it's a bit of a long story, but I wound up missing an external piece or two and I wasn't sure what was missing, now I know it's the speed input and output sensors I need to get. And I also now know why the linkage sensor was such a PITA to get off, lol.
thanks for u videos, my van doesn't go in reverse all forward work fine, im thinking the reverse band is burn. thanks to u videos I feel confident to do the task.
you're the man for putting this up! tyvm sir, well done

This guy is a fucking beast ! Makes it look much easier than it is lol.
Nice to see a cast iron pump like the 350 and 400 and powerglide transmission
great videos, your dissassembly and reassembly videos were a big help in rebuilding my first 4l60e. I now would like to rebuild a 4l80e, your teardown vid is great any tips or tricks on rebuilding and reassembly would be greatly appreciated. Thanks agian
At 23:44 that snap ring you removed, did you just use a mall screw driver? Lol I cant' seem to get it off.
Looking for some 4L80e advise. I have a 2003 Chevy express van, AWD with the 4l80E. There are 170,000 on the van and engine, the trans was swapped out for a junkyard unit at 140,000, unknown amount of miles. While decelerating, from going at any speed, there is a high pitched whine coming from the drivetrain. It's more apparent at higher speeds when you let off the gas. The faster your going, the higher pitched the noise is. I have made sure that all the tires are the same pressure and they all have the same amount of wear. There is no CEL, and other than that the transmission shifts great, no slipping or hard shifts. I'm just afraid it's the pump gears, but wouldn't the gears make noise all the time? I'll see if I can't get a sound bite.
prolly transfer case
what a video, explained that I feel inspired to do that job too! Thank you so much,....
good job i was hoping you was going to find something really screwed up i have a 1995 480le in a 6.5 diesel with 2nd gear slipping are the diesel and gas trans differrent and why if the are thanks for your help
Great Video newsubscriber have a 2004 awd astro 4l60e getting a 894 code slipping told to do a rebuilt . some say just change the bore size with sonnax . astro has been good to me have over 300,000 miles change fluids at interval times. Your video's have given me the confident to do it my self. What would you think would be the the problem and solution correct the failed part or full rebuilt.
Hiram your man
That 4l80 alot more intense than a 4l60e
Great video ... too the point and detailed
Thanks for the video,I'm about to tear down my 4L80E out of 94 2500 pick up problem started with No overdrive then 2nd gear only with hard acceleration it put it into limp mode .First attempt on overhaul I'm going with Master rebuild kit and thinking about Transgo HD2 shift kit and do you know anything about the Transgo kit where you install a vacuum modulator and do away with the electronic shifting it makes the 4L80E manual shift only ??? Any info is appreciated. Again thanks for putting these videos out for us to learn and have a awesome reference to go to.
thank you for a great teardown video.
Very imformative video by a very skilled tech. Thanks
What was the final diagnosis of why the transmission needed to be rebuilt? Or was it misdiagnosed?
What would cause the overdrive to disengage and engage periodically once it was at full operating temp?
Pressure switches already replaced.
Thanks for the videos have a question about 4l80e pump gears look okay around the outside as you explain in this video on the flat surface of the gears and on the pump surface looks like a little scoring nothing bad can barely fill it will this be okay or needs to be replaced
Great job!! Love watching your work.
Great video on the process I've watched it 4-5 times at least. What would cause a 4l80e to loose 3rd gear but still have reverse. On a 01 Sierra 5.3
Thank you for the video. It was very helpful.
Hi there.. nice vid. i have a 4l80e 1999, suburban 4x4. and when OD shifts. it vibrates. On up and down shift.. No trouble on any other gear shift`s. Any idea?
You had me until you took the valve body out Lol Lol
My god there are a lot of parts !! Nice job!!
Awesome, very detailed disassembly video. I'm thinking about rebuilding my 2001 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 which has the same transmission, and installing a shift kit. Are there major differences between a 2001 and a 2006 model 4L80E besides the bushing you noted? Also it would be awesome if you had a re-assembly video of this trans. Main difference I would note at this point is that mine will have a transfer case married to it instead of the tail housing.
2003 accord 4 cylinder whining noise only in park and neutral from transmission. Which bearing you think is bad.
Great video.
I've got a 2007 4L80E behind a built LQ9 in my jeep. It was pulled with 27,xxx miles on it. Any idea what would cause it shift hard 1-2, and 2-3...and in out of 4th/lock up? It will drive normally on some days and on occasions goes into what some have said is limp mode.
Hi Dan,will you tell me what type of tool is needed to remove A&B solenoid.thank you
If you drop the valve body with the trans in the truck still will the check balls fall out ?
Great video. Very informative.
Estas pesado compa me gustan tu videos. Gracias por darte el tiempo de desglosar cada detalle Felizidades eres buen masetro.
I am also looking for some 4L80e advice.I have a 4l80e from a bone yard .I was told it was running when it came in.I changed the filter and seals, the pan is what I would have called very clean for a trans with 60,000 miles on it. After installing it ,I did not have any forward gears .I have only reverse.Just to let you know ,I have the a LS motor hooked up to this trans with a reprogramed PCM. I did try unplugging the trans because they said I should get forward gear in a limp mode. But no luck.Any help would be appreciated .Thanks great video Fred
I have a 2003 s10 4l60e that will only go to into overdrive lockup one time when you first take off. After that it will not lockup until you shut it off for about two minutes. It will do the same thing, until you shut it off again and only shift one time. Found out I had a bad TPS, raplaced it with and ACDelco, still no lockup. I accidently left the TPS unplugged and it lockups everytime, just doesn't run right with TPS unplugged. I also found out that the MAP sensor was clogged up, and with it unplugged it will lockup everytime. I had the transmission live drive scanned and everything looked good except that TTC solenoid was off, except for the one time that it locks up on initial drive. My question could the TCC On/Off solenoid be bad even though it worked with these two sensors unplugged. Thank you in advance, your VIdeos are awesome
Hola!
Fantastic video, thank you!!!! You make dealing with a 4L80e look effortless. Lol
Awesome vid man. Thanks
My 4L80E doesnt get driven often. When I start it and put it in D, there is no drive until 6-8 seconds later but after that it seems to run fine, also shifts hard sometimes, any response would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the awesome video! I have a 96 4l80e in my 2500 suburban. I also have the same yr vehicle but its a 4l60e 1500 as a parts truck. Will the trans solonoids work for the 4l80e? Hope this isn't a dumb question......
One quick question since you do frequent here. I like, and have, a 4l80e to go into my car. I dont like the first gear much but it is a sacrfice I will make. I will need to use 3.73 gears to keep my OD rpms where I want them at 65mph. I want to go 4:10 with the deep, or not so deep, first gear but can not with the .75 OD. Is there a OD gearset I can use to get me a .65 OD? That would/should put me at 2300rpm with a 25" tire
Hey! I have a problem. I have a 1994 chevy 3/4 ton with. 4l80e and it is throwing a code 87. I replaced the 1-2 shift solenoid but it still wont shift. its only throwing code 87. What could i do to fix it?
You are a PRO . Great job
Hiram, i've already said it, and I'll say it again! You da man!! You and i are on the same page😅😊!!
Ran across this video hoping to find something on changing a parking pawl. Park does not work on my 1993 4L80E in P 30 Southwind Motor home. Is it changeable with removing the trans? Thanks!!
Thanks for the video! Very helpful!
you make it look so easy
Very nice to see!
Hiram, awesome video! I have a 1994 Chevy K3500 with a 4L80E trans that is stuck in limp mode. Any ideas if this is the wiring harness leaking fluid or the 1-2 2-3 shift solenoids? I did notice the external plug and wiring is dirty and damp with what looks to be trans fluid. I haven't gotten into the trans issue any further yet.I bought the truck after it was sitting for over 2 years so I am seeing all kinds of issues everywhere else and now I am at the trans. Thank you for any info you could throw my way. The truck only has 64,000 miles on it but it was used as a snowplow vehicle before it was parked.
Hello I have a question not sure if you can answer me or not but I have a 1993 c2500 with a 4l80e auto transmission and person I purchased the truck off of said the trans was rebuilt New a and b solenoids not sure what else was replaced but it's stuck in limp mode only have 2nd and reverse a mechanic looked at it and and said the pcm is sending the commands to the trans but the trans isn't acting the commands out so I made a manual control with 3 switches I can hear them click when I activate the switch but nothing coming out of transmission still the same 2nd and reverse any clue as to what it might be thanks if you get back to me
I have 1991 p30 chevy chassis with 454 and 4l80e trans. I have checked to see if there was a code stored there wasn't one. The trans has reverse and only 2nd gear it seemed too gradually get longer to shift from 1st to 2nd but I could be wrong. The fluid was changed about 6000 miles ago and seems to be ok, do you have any ideas what I could check.
you the best man thank you very much
Thanks for the great videos! I
I lost all gears while driving in the highway 55m/h suddenly.
I do have parking locking. Fluid is red no burnt smell.
I just checked presure line, unfortunately my gauge is a 1000psi so not the most accurate but I get:
P-R-OD-D-2-1
90-70-90-50-50-50-50 at idle.
140-200-130-100-90-90-90 at 1,300rpm
Any pointers?
If i have pump presure it means input shaft or pump cannot be broken, right?
Truck doesn't even try to move in any gear,....broken output shaft?
I have replaced trans filter, old was really clogged and had fallen off, but no metal or unusual debris. 2wd driveshaft does not turn, linkeage is good. It feels as it is in neutral all the time; but my presure test seems to indicate manual valve is working, right?
*****
Thank you
. Could the Presure manifold switch failed with all fluid open/exhausted and the trany think it is in neutral?
The shifter is like a rod not a cable, and it is working. This is a chevy 93 c3500, 6.5td. The pump presure also changes as i shift into reverse etc... so the manual valve at least is working some, right?. Any chance I can pull and rebuild just valve body? something telling the forward and reverse clutches not to engage? Just surprise something breaks inside the tranny and hear no noises.
I am really surprise that I have no codes; it feels almost like the tranny thinks I am in neutral....really tought the linkeage broke, but it is not.
thanks vey much for your help!
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP! All my gears in my 4l80E work perfectly but park will not engage? Any thoughts?
I have a 1997 Cheverolet C2500 with the 4l80e in it and it whines loud on all gears and in park and reverse. Any input would be greatly appreciated as to what it could be. I've been told its probably the pump maybe transmission filter plugged.
Hey I appreciate your videos I completely rebuilt my 4 l80e with very little experience your the man. but I have a problem it was running wonderfully for about 2 to 3 months and now when I come to a stop it feels like the torque converter is still engaged if I put it in neutral it's okay but if it's in Reverse or drive it gets a shaky feeling like it's still engaged any ideas?
Hi great videos ! Can you give me a list of specialty tools required for the rebuild I have a 2006 Denali Sierra with the 4L80e that went out and want to rebuild it. But don’t know what specialty tools I need thanks
hey Hiram, I have seen guys change a number of parts in a 4L60E and then call it a 4L65E. Question: are they doing something that is worth the money and time??? Thanks.
hey hiram i have a 4l80e that will slip in 2nd gear. at first i thought it to be the sprag but when i play with the pressures in the computer it does affect shift quality so i am assuming i have a pressure leak somewhere? 2nd gear has always seemed to have a slight delay in engaging as well when the solenoids shut off takes around .8tenths of a second to begin its shift.
this transmission is swapped into a camaro making a lot of power *800rwhp+). problems started after i bumped the line pressure in the force motor table in the tune dont know if it is related but possibly after hearing you talk about line pressures...
im going to be tearing it down here soon just looking for pointers of what to look for! thanks a ton.
edit: everything else in the trans works fine except 2nd gear slips under power
So what brand of rear lube do u recommend
My 2003 4l80e grinds when put it in park . No movement in any gear . Anyone know what it could be. Had a used one put in .The shop didn't torque the bolt on torque converter . End up shooting through the oil pan. They said they fixed it now 3200.00 later and 4 months no go! Any help would help thanks
Great video, very good job, thank you
Hiram,
I am new to this whole thing and not familiar with the 4L80E transmissions at all. First I wanted to say this video is awesome and very helpful. I am having a problem with my 2004 chevy silverado 2500hd and not sure what to do. It grinds when you put it in reverse sometimes and will also sometimes grind whir you are driving, like it is in between gears or something. It all goes away if you hit the breaks or hit the gas a little. The RPM's don't change when it does it either. Other times it drives perfectly. I took it to the dealership and they said there are no codes with the transmission and it all seemed to work fine, but on my way home it did it again. I need help and was hoping you would have some advice. I also know the torque converter is bad because there is a loud whining noise coming from it and from all the forums I have ready they say it is a pretty common problem. Could this be causing the other problems as well, or do you think it would be internal? Thank you for your time!
So, I sat down last night and watched these videos to see if I could possibly attempt to rebuild the 4L80E in my 92 C3500 HD. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to but I'm pretty sure that s what its gonna take to fix it's issue. No reverse, pulls forward in neutral and reverse. I tried the manual low test I read about and the engine brake engages when you let off the throttle.... Any thoughts? I must say you made the tear down and rebuild look easy, but I know it was just experience👍👍
hello Hiram Great video watched many times
My number on questions is --Could an electrical issue like a cracked wire cause reverse not to work in the 4l80e, or a pcm issue cause no reverse
hello i just rebuild my transmission 4l80e follow you instructions but wend i install in my truck not go in drive o reverse i replace all electronics parts bran new and still no work only if i get a lot gas if u can please help me and let me know what is bad t y and sorry my English is no so good thanks again
i don't know why i watched this. mine is fine right now. changed the fluid last weekend and it shifts smooth as glass now. wasn't shifting funny to begin with. just noticed the fluid was dirtier than i expected. the fan on a hot day makes it sound like the engine is working hard at lower engine speed but it's not reflecting that in the tach. this guy knows his stuff. too bad he's not local, i'd entertain the idea of sending my ranger transmission to him. around here we have powers transmission and they aren't known for quality work. they always are looking for technicians to. the sign will go up for awhile and be taken down for awhile. seems like they have a high turn over and might be hiring the wrong people for the job. they also are known for being quite expensive. leaves me with 2 options for my work beater, v8 swap or rebuild the trans when it finally goes. a v8 with a 5 speed is looking quite appealing at this point.
I have built 4 units with the help of your videos. Easy to understand and you are very thorough on your tear downs. Shoot me an email so I can get your address, I owe you a steak dinner! haha
I have a 93 chev 1500 with a 4l80e. it is slow engaging in low and reverse. would it be the low and reverse servo? just looking for a quick fix if any.
I have an 2003 Chevy Impala with the 3.8 engine and when I start my car up it has a whining noise and the then the car will not move when I put it in drive. Also, it goes out when I am driving and stop at a light and go to take off the car just revs and not move at all. Do you what part that went bad or let me know if that can be rebuilt or repaired ?
