Edible Bath Bombs for Drinks! | How to Drink

  • I'm gearing up for New Years Eve and I'm serving these Instant French 75's using Edible Bath Bombs (drink Bombs?) to drop at midnight!
I had this idea for a drink bomb, just like a bath bomb, but drinkable. Something you could serve alongside a nearly complete drink to your guest and then have them drop them into the glass at midnight (like the ball from Times Square) to complete the cocktail. I did a bunch of research and tinkering and came up with this, the Drink Bomb, or Drink Fizzer, or Cocktail Ball (hate that one). Anyway, it's a package of purely edible ingredients that work in a cocktail anyway and when dropped into a liquid react and fizz just like a bath bomb. I think there's definitely better recipes using this technique that you can develop, so I'm offering this as a kind of jumping off point. I'm super interested in what better things you do with it!
Cocktail Bomb Batch (makes 15 -20)
    7 oz. or 200 G Citric Acid
    10.5 oz. or 300 g Baking Soda
    14 oz. or 400 g sugar
~.5 oz. or 15 ml. assorted bitters
    .2 oz. or 5 g Gum Acacia
    a pinch of gold luster
    mix to wet sand consistency
    form with molds
    Countdown Cocktail
.5 oz. or 15 ml. Cocchi Americano
2 oz. or 60 ml. London Dry Gin
    Stir over ice
    Serve up in wide glass
    garnish with rosemary
    drop in cocktail fizzer

Suggestions: Substitute the granular white sugar, with confectioner's sugar, as that will dissolve into the drink better. When mixing, drop your liquids into the bowl first, then hit it with the sugar, and then the rest of the ingredients, adding the baking soda last, in order to prevent excessive reaction.

    • @heatherbliss5356
      @heatherbliss5356 3 роки тому +13

Crystal light and the others already have some citric acid in there, so you’d have to adjust the recipe a bit. I’ve made regular bath bombs before, and water alone will work to bind them. I think this would be really cool with some blue butterfly pea flower in there, since it would also change color when added to an acid like lemonade.

  • @chrispy1955

Bear in mind that some of the citric acid you add will react with spirits, specifically ethanol to form Triethyl citrate which is also known as E-1505 and used as a food safe plasticizer for making foams etc (a stabilizer basically). It won't harm you but im pretty sure but worth knowing as it might decrease the ABV of your drink.

As someone who makes bath bombs, here's a simple hack to avoid activating the citric acid and baking soda prematurely. Mix the wet ingredients into the baking soda first and combine with citric acid last. Less activation during mixing means more fizz in the final product. :)

I could see this working nicely in a 4th of July themed cocktail too. Maybe have a colored ball inside a white ball so it sprays out colors as it dissolves. Or a lemon drop cocktail that has the lemon flavoring in a ball that you drop into the glass. There are a lot of possibilities here.

  • @Reddotzebra

You know what you get when you mix citric acid with sodium bicarbonate? It's homemade baking soda! The trick is to get the pH just right in the final product because sodium citrate (that's what causes the "salty" flavor if you go close to 50/50, it's a salt of citric acid) is a pretty neat buffer.

PS if you spray the wet mix in with a spritzer it won't react as much so you'll have more reaction in the drink, you can also add herbs on the inside of the mold that'll look pretty on the outside of your bomb and act as a garnish.

This is an excellent idea! Looking forward to more ideas on these as they would be awesome gifts! Something that bath bomb makers do is use a spray bottle to spritz instead of dropping the liquid in when making the ‘sand’. You definitely have my brain going with potential ideas: citrus zest, lavender blossoms, rose petals, espresso powder...separate concepts there. I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel! You have fantastic ideas that I am thoroughly enjoying!

I totally see this complementing Mezcal incredibly well! Mix up a chocolate/chili pepper bitters to give it a smoky Xoaxaca chocolate flair. Switch out for brown/coconut sugar, cinnamon/nutmeg spices...just wow.

Angel Torres I’ve been thinking about doing a chocolatey version of these but I’m worried the citric acid will make it too sour and citrusy to make chocolate work. Do you agree? Anything you would do to change that?

Saw your Lobe Blaster video with the butterfly pea blossom gin before I watched this video and I got thinking, the spectacle of the drink bomb and the colour change together would make for a great video, and you’d have no need for the lemon juice as the citric acid will create the reaction. Anyway, love the vids, keep them coming.
