It was here in germany not 10 years ago. The churches were always open, the donation box was filled. Honesty boxes were everywhere, Not anymore. Don`t ask why.
Not so easy to get a car off an island so no need to lock. Last time I was in Arran with hubby we took my sister’s dog for a walk she got phone calls to say someone had her pup lol😅
Despite the atrocious weather you experienced , I loved this video. My Mum was Tiree’s optician for 18 years! She flew out to the island on her own once a year for a week, taking all her essential testing equipment. When I got married I honey-mooned on Tiree but we took the ferry as we had a dog. When we visited the shops, we asked the older staff about the optician that came from Glasgow and they remembered her!! Such a fab island and in good weather you could be in the Bahamas!! It was so good to see the flight from Glasgow to Tiree and see what my Mum saw for all those years. Thanks so much for enduring the weather and posting this vid. Happy travels.
Thanks for this Tiree film. I now understand what my late father meant, he was stationed there for part of WW2 at a radar station. One of the stories was of sheep invading the site and they were told to cut down some trees for a fence, the response was “there are no trees”.
Yes, it would have been lovely to visit the Islands: Hebrides, Orkney and Shetlands, several thousand years ago when they had their original dense forests of "shoreline to shoreline" growth of short bushy trees. Those original low bushy forests would have helped keep the wind down a lot especially on the more inner portions of the islands. I notice how to the right of the "newer house" as pictured from 11m43sec to 11m47sec you can see a small New Zealand Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis) growing happily, leaves blowing in the wind. It's barely 6 feet high and hasn't flowered yet, but in time it should grow well, much taller and bushier, and once it starts flowering and shedding seeds the young ones are great "pioneers" springing up by themselves (assuming not grazed to death by rabbits/sheep/cattle while still seedlings. NZ Cabbage trees can tolerate lots of cold damp and wind, it's the long lasting deep freezes that kill them down to ground level (although they re-sprout from lumpy underground roots). Unfortunately they're not made of true "wood" as such (it's like a cross between mashed potato and wet cardboard LOL) , so are not suitable for use as building or furniture timber. Old thick cabbage tree trunks can be cut down for firewood, and be burned if dried out thoroughly first. The dry old leaves make poor compost but great fire-starter kindling. I realise that horse was an Island Pony of some type, but I would have liked to see it had a wind/rain shelter of some kind. Even just some shanty made of old corrugated roofing iron.
Cannot explain it, I was born in England, but have a really strong pull towards the Scottish islands. I have not looked at my heritage so no idea if any of my ancestors are from Scotland. It just feels right.
I am from Calcutta, India and I feel that way too. No Scots among my ancestors but the Scots did have a presence here in education and industry. Scottish Church College and Scottish Church Collegiate School happen to be well-run institutions even today.
One of my favorite things about your videos is that you show the good, the bad, and the 'we didn't plan for THIS'. A trip is a trip. They aren't all butterflies and unicorn sprinkles. In fact, no trip is perfect, but sometimes, that's when we find the best places to eat by chance, an undiscovered amazing spot off the itinerary, or a new friend. Love the wee bird bouncing around on the skylight. It was if he was saying "get up, get up, it's a new day! You're missing it!"

Twin Otter G-BVVK is just under 44 years old and manufactured in Toronto Canada by De Havilland Canada with the rather ominous serial number of 666. First delivered in February 1980 to Widerøe of Norway with the registration of LN-BEZ and saw continuous service with them until 1994 when it was sold back to De Havilland Canada in December of that year. It was then quickly acquired by Loganair under its current registration arriving in Southend early January 1995. Whilst always operated by Loganair it still had various livery changes, British Airways Express, British Airways and lastly Flybe. Flown to Bournemouth on 08 January 2018 for removal of Flybe livery and rolled out again on 23rd January in full Loganair livery for return to current service.

I am very impressed by the way they are converting those houses to be used by real people, and I am always amazed by the construction of those old stone piers - every block of stone firmly in place, which they would need to be to withstand the waves rolling in. That Twin-Otter, Victor-Kilo started life as LN-BEZ in 1980 with Norwegian Airline Wideroe. She's the oldest aircraft in the Loganair fleet. I've flown aboard her many times. Her construction number was 666 which amused me. Tiree at this time of year. What were you thinking Steve?
There where several DHC-6 (Twin Otter) in service by Widerøe in Norway (I have not been able to find the exact number) and 6 by RNoAF! As in Canada and Scotland, they were used on airports with shorter runways! Fun fact: the Twin Otter’s were comemorated/ridiculed by Norwegian country singer Øystein Sunde in a song (‘Liten og grønn’ (‘Small and Green’)) based on ‘City of New Orleans’ (Willie Nelson, of course)!

One thing I do enjoy about traveling in the off-season or nearly off-season, as you mentioned, was seeing what it might be like to actually live in a particular area. It's one thing when the weather is perfect and there's tons of folks around visiting, activities or festivities planned, etc. It's another entirely when you're there and the weather is rough and really no one else is around. Still, I think it's kind of cool that you made this trip regardless. Even with the rain pouring down, it still looks gorgeous there. I'm sure it's less pleasant in person, with the wind trying to knock you about and the rain hitting you from the side, so I appreciate you deciding to go for it.
The highland cattle are beautiful and must be tough to be outside in that wind and rain. That must be a beautiful island in nice summer weather. A most enjoyable video.
Great video Steve. I'm just discovering your channel and it's amazing. When you're a tourist, its all about the destination. When you're an explorer, it's about the journey and less travelled destination, so weather and the unexpected is all part of the experience. And an explorer is always prepared. Best to pack a grin and bear it. :)
I agree too .Scottish Islands always an adventure. True about you never knowwhen you'll eat again .The island of Mull is so huge and pubs cafes etc are rarer than Hens teeth....I can bear witness to that .Always carry my wee stove in the car boot plus emergency rations ...The island scenery and wildlife more than makes up for the adventures though ! 😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you for this view of Tiree. My great-great-great grandfather was Donald McDonald, a tailor on Tiree. He came to Canada aged 32 on Lord Selkirk's ship the Oughton with his wife Flora and their 3 young children John, Duncan, and Hugh. They arrived in Baldoon, Ontario in 1804.
My mother in law's family also started in Canada at the Baldoon settlement...the Mackenzies...I just happened upon this video and was reading comments...

Steve your video is just what I needed. It was so relaxing and informative. It is nice to see that there are still places where one can visit without mobs of people, horrendous traffic, and long lines and waiting at restaurants. I drive to San Diego, California from Ozark, Alabama on Interstate 10. Some times the traffic is bumper to bumper for nearly 2,500 miles. Not fun! I love your accent! Thanks again from Alabama USA!
It was good that the bothy owner gave you a lift from the airport and the highland cow was cute. Becky is obviously the legend of this video. Riding out a major storm in a leaking plywood shack (I mean bothy) could be pretty hairy! Hope you make it out of there!

I love how the Scottish word for "small" always seems to be "wee." I'm an American from Florida who visited Scotland for a month. Soon after arriving there I found everything small was, well, "wee." So ever since returning home to the USA I now call every little thing "wee." 😅
I feel bad about enjoying this video where you spent a good deal of time in inclement weather and basic accommodation, but its another great video and full of interest. The grey thistle and rose van intrigued me, it sounds like a somewhat niche business to run on an island with, presumably, a small population. I was equally fascinated by the small harbour (dry dock?) entrance that can be closed by installing those massive timbers into the slots in the stonework - I assume there must have been a crane there at one time. I am particularly impressed by the audio quality, its not easy to get such good recordings in those conditions. Thank you for getting cold and wet for our (5,000 in the first hour) entertainment.
Steve, you have an incredible amount of followers now, from all over the globe, an amazing achievement, well done to you. I have visited Tiree many times, through work at the radar site, the people that live there, are some of the friendliest folks ever, always go out of their way to help with questions. The beaches are incredible, white sands and blue sea, but sadly few loungers lol. What a windswept paradise Tiree looks - albeit a wet one, so next week's video promises to be a stormy classic! The island you flew over was beautiful Iona, although from the opposite way up from the way it's usually viewed. In the early 80s there was 3 Twin Otters at Aberdeen that flew up to Flotta in the Orkneys to support building the Oil Terminal.Hence the phrase we had a Twotta to Flotta. It's great to see these aircraft still doing what they are designed for.Fly by wire (cables) manual flying on short runways and wheels down and welded.Proper flying.

Been on a 2 prop. plane, Been to the Ile of Tiree, which I never heard of before, bought lovely cakes in an honesty box, walked where horses come up to greet you, cattle wander where ever they please and then also try to sleep in a leaky bothey in a rainstorm.! Looks like Becky's Bakes were much needed and they looked delicious too! It was lovely to see the islands from above and the little tour you got from the gentleman regarding the buildings for residents of the island. Sounds like the bothy got a battering and can't imagine what is to come in the next video. Loved the bird 'tap dancing' on the roof which I am sure made a change from the downpour of rain you had to listen to all night.
I have flown Logan Air on the LHR - Isle of Man route several times and have always been impressed by their planes and quality of their service. I especially like those Scottish biscuit wafers they provide; I haven't come across them anywhere else and they make a delicious sweet treat on the short haul flight.
I used to skydive back in the day. Many of the jumps were done out of twin otters. The audio you captured catapulted be to those old days. As an ex Argyll we had guys from Tiree in the regiment. I must go and visit sometime to get a feel for the place. Thanks for sharing 🤗
A sharp contrast to the weather in Wales. I love these remote islands but I don't think I could live on one (where do you get a curry?). Now, according to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, every traveller must always know where their towel is. You'd be bang in trouble out there in space.
Curry....you learn to keep a very well-stocked freezer, as you never know when supplies will be delayed. Always have a good stock of your favourite things because with that weather, you end up rewarding yourself with treats just for surviving another day
It just wouldnt feel right if all your videos were picture perfect with the sun shining !....real life is SOOOOO much better to watch than a photoshopped tourist video. Keep it real Steve :)

What was rough n ready about the the bothy? Looked pretty good to me. A warm clean shelter, a comfortable bunk, and power for a kettle , what more do you expect or want? It sure beats a tent for shelter in the Highlands and Islands when that sideways wind driven rain sets in. OK, a drip leak from the skylight, but that's no big deal. It kept the weather on the outside which is what you need.
Love that you are exploring all these islands. I didn't know there were that many 👍 will be definitely planning a trip to Scotland and the islands, which one lololol all look so cool and pretty to check out ! ❤😊

Great vlog, and can't wait to see what happens next - you tease! Tiree would be fine if guaranteed the weather and travel connections. The plane and the bothy experience you handled well. Shame about the towel, but at least you, like me, prefer the cream first then jam, on a scone! Also appreciated the lighthouse "joke!" Loved this video. You made the best of the situation, Steve. I had beautiful weather on Tiree a few summers ago. When the weather is good there it is heaven on earth. Neighbouring Coll is amazing as well, and has a very different character. Coll and Tiree are two of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life, and I've been to many places. The beaches on both islands are phenomenal, although Coll is much better for wild camping.
You can't beat a flight in a proper aircraft. The Hebridean Air Islander - G-HEBS - has just been at Leeds Bradford for what is probably end of season maintenance. It was a nice surprise to see it there on Thursday. It went back to North Connel yesterday.

oh Steve, I really feel for ya - not the nicest of trips with that weather, but watching your edited video was a pleasure - you are so experienced and excellent in the filming, that I feel, I have been there with you! I visited Iona many times (from where you can just about see Tiree and the lighthouse), but never made it to Tiree, so I was very curious about seeing anything of the island, and this was very informative to me - thanks shall you have - as always! And despite the 'hardship' of the trip, you didn't loose your sense of humour... you made me laugh several times! :)

I found it really disconcerting that the controls for the plane were under the roof - but then I'm a nervous flyer anyway! I guess we'll have to wait to see if you got trapped on the island and did the 12 mile trek to the pub!

Looking at the Nissan huts where he is staying that's probably where your father's radar station was.

Wondered if Steve would pan to the "a little hot" warning light that all cockpits feature, as demonstrated by Capt. Oveur in the 1980 feature-length documentary classic.
Twin Otter G-BVVK is just under 44 years old and manufactured in Toronto Canada by De Havilland Canada with the rather ominous serial number of 666. First delivered in February 1980 to Widerøe of Norway with the registration of LN-BEZ and saw continuous service with them until 1994 when it was sold back to De Havilland Canada in December of that year. It was then quickly acquired by Loganair under its current registration arriving in Southend early January 1995. Whilst always operated by Loganair it still had various livery changes, British Airways Express, British Airways and lastly Flybe. Flown to Bournemouth on 08 January 2018 for removal of Flybe livery and rolled out again on 23rd January in full Loganair livery for return to current service.

I was curious about the plane's history and looked it up as well. I frequently fly with Widerøe so it was good to see proof of my suspicions.
I am very impressed by the way they are converting those houses to be used by real people, and I am always amazed by the construction of those old stone piers - every block of stone firmly in place, which they would need to be to withstand the waves rolling in. Also Becky's Bakery sells some great goodies! My favourite bit was the wee bird scuttling about on the skylight....

I love these Scottish island visits. You give so much info on these which makes it easy to see if it's something that we could manage to do.
That Twin-Otter, Victor-Kilo started life as LN-BEZ in 1980 with Norwegian Airline Wideroe. She's the oldest aircraft in the Loganair fleet. I've flown aboard her many times. Her construction number was 666 which amused me. Tiree at this time of year. What were you thinking Steve?
There where several DHC-6 (Twin Otter) in service by Widerøe in Norway (I have not been able to find the exact number) and 6 by RNoAF! As in Canada and Scotland, they were used on airports with shorter runways!
Fun fact: the Twin Otter’s were comemorated/ridiculed by Norwegian country singer Øystein Sunde in a song (‘Liten og grønn’ (‘Small and Green’)) based on ‘City of New Orleans’ (Willie Nelson, of course)!

You take us viewers/followers/subscribers to some interesting and out-of-the-way places, Steve, and Tiree is no exception. 👍 Sorry you got caught by a horrible cold, but with all the rain 💦 you endured on Tiree it's a wonder you didn't drown.
One thing I do enjoy about traveling in the off-season or nearly off-season, as you mentioned, was seeing what it might be like to actually live in a particular area. It's one thing when the weather is perfect and there's tons of folks around visiting, activities or festivities planned, etc. It's another entirely when you're there and the weather is rough and really no one else is around. Still, I think it's kind of cool that you made this trip regardless. Even with the rain pouring down, it still looks gorgeous there. I'm sure it's less pleasant in person, with the wind trying to knock you about and the rain hitting you from the side, so I appreciate you deciding to go for it.
The highland cattle are beautiful and must be tough to be outside in that wind and rain. That must be a beautiful island in nice summer weather. A most enjoyable video.
Great video Steve. I'm just discovering your channel and it's amazing. When you're a tourist, its all about the destination. When you're an explorer, it's about the journey and less travelled destination, so weather and the unexpected is all part of the experience. And an explorer is always prepared. Best to pack a grin and bear it. :)

I agree too .Scottish Islands always an adventure. True about you never knowwhen you'll eat again .The island of Mull is so huge and pubs cafes etc are rarer than Hens teeth....I can bear witness to that .Always carry my wee stove in the car boot plus emergency rations ...The island scenery and wildlife more than makes up for the adventures though ! 😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you for this view of Tiree. My great-great-great grandfather was Donald McDonald, a tailor on Tiree. He came to Canada aged 32 on Lord Selkirk's ship the Oughton with his wife Flora and their 3 young children John, Duncan, and Hugh. They arrived in Baldoon, Ontario in 1804.
My mother in law's family also started in Canada at the Baldoon settlement...the Mackenzies...I just happened upon this video and was reading comments...

Steve your video is just what I needed. It was so relaxing and informative. It is nice to see that there are still places where one can visit without mobs of people, horrendous traffic, and long lines and waiting at restaurants. I drive to San Diego, California from Ozark, Alabama on Interstate 10. Some times the traffic is bumper to bumper for nearly 2,500 miles. Not fun! I love your accent! Thanks again from Alabama USA!

It was good that the bothy owner gave you a lift from the airport and the highland cow was cute. Becky is obviously the legend of this video. Riding out a major storm in a leaking plywood shack (I mean bothy) could be pretty hairy! Hope you make it out of there!

I love how the Scottish word for "small" always seems to be "wee." I'm an American from Florida who visited Scotland for a month. Soon after arriving there I found everything small was, well, "wee." So ever since returning home to the USA I now call every little thing "wee." 😅

I feel bad about enjoying this video where you spent a good deal of time in inclement weather and basic accommodation, but its another great video and full of interest. The grey thistle and rose van intrigued me, it sounds like a somewhat niche business to run on an island with, presumably, a small population. I was equally fascinated by the small harbour (dry dock?) entrance that can be closed by installing those massive timbers into the slots in the stonework - I assume there must have been a crane there at one time.
I am particularly impressed by the audio quality, its not easy to get such good recordings in those conditions. Thank you for getting cold and wet for our (5,000 in the first hour) entertainment.

Steve, you have an incredible amount of followers now, from all over the globe, an amazing achievement, well done to you. I have visited Tiree many times, through work at the radar site, the people that live there, are some of the friendliest folks ever, always go out of their way to help with questions. The beaches are incredible, white sands and blue sea, but sadly few loungers lol. Thanks so much for all that you do, for bringing the beauty of the places you visit, to the small screens all over the world.

How lovely to see the old building being repurposed for local people to remain living there. Your 5 min rain shower reminded me of Orkney, where I could see the weather coming in and I sheltered in a red telephone box with my daughter and let it pass.
Awesome Steve. I've been waiting for this one since you showed us a snippet a few weeks ago. What a windswept paradise Tiree looks - albeit a wet one, so next week's video promises to be a stormy classic! The island you flew over was beautiful Iona, although from the opposite way up from the way it's usually viewed. We love the beaches on Iona but as you know we had to escape Iona a day early at the end of September due to stormy weather so we feel your Tiree pain! 😅 - and a quick edit to say well done on hitting 90k subs Steve. In the early 80s there was 3 Twin Otters at Aberdeen that flew up to Flotta in the Orkneys to support building the Oil Terminal.Hence the phrase we had a Twotta to Flotta.
It's great to see these aircraft still doing what they are designed for.Fly by wire (cables) manual flying on short runways and wheels down and welded.Proper flying.

Delightful, Steve! I have broadened my horizon considerably! Been on a 2 prop. plane, Been to the Ile of Tiree, which I never heard of before, bought lovely cakes in an honesty box, walked where horses come up to greet you, cattle wander where ever they please and then also try to sleep in a leaky bothey in a rainstorm.! Thank you, Steve!

Looks like Becky's Bakes were much needed and they looked delicious too! It was lovely to see the islands from above and the little tour you got from the gentleman regarding the buildings for residents of the island. Sounds like the bothy got a battering and can't imagine what is to come in the next video. Loved the bird 'tap dancing' on the roof which I am sure made a change from the downpour of rain you had to listen to all night.
I have flown Logan Air on the LHR - Isle of Man route several times and have always been impressed by their planes and quality of their service. I especially like those Scottish biscuit wafers they provide; I haven't come across them anywhere else and they make a delicious sweet treat on the short haul flight.

I used to skydive back in the day. Many of the jumps were done out of twin otters. The audio you captured catapulted be to those old days.
As an ex Argyll we had guys from Tiree in the regiment. I must go and visit sometime to get a feel for the place.

A sharp contrast to the weather in Wales. I love these remote islands but I don't think I could live on one (where do you get a curry?). Now, according to The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, every traveller must always know where their towel is. You'd be bang in trouble out there in space.
Curry....you learn to keep a very well-stocked freezer, as you never know when supplies will be delayed. Always have a good stock of your favourite things because with that weather, you end up rewarding yourself with treats just for surviving another day
It just wouldnt feel right if all your videos were picture perfect with the sun shining !....real life is SOOOOO much better to watch than a photoshopped tourist video. Keep it real Steve :)

What was rough n ready about the the bothy? Looked pretty good to me. A warm clean shelter, a comfortable bunk, and power for a kettle , what more do you expect or want? It sure beats a tent for shelter in the Highlands and Islands when that sideways wind driven rain sets in. OK, a drip leak from the skylight, but that's no big deal. It kept the weather on the outside which is what you need.

Great vlog, and can't wait to see what happens next - you tease! Tiree would be fine if guaranteed the weather and travel connections. The plane and the bothy experience you handled well. Shame about the towel, but at least you, like me, prefer the cream first then jam, on a scone! Also appreciated the lighthouse "joke!" That little cafe/bakery place was fantastic, especially cheesecake and tiramisu. Great history of Tiree as well! 👍

Loved this video. You made the best of the situation, Steve. I had beautiful weather on Tiree a few summers ago. When the weather is good there it is heaven on earth. Neighbouring Coll is amazing as well, and has a very different character. Coll and Tiree are two of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life, and I've been to many places. The beaches on both islands are phenomenal, although Coll is much better for wild camping.

The Hebridean Air Islander - G-HEBS - has just been at Leeds Bradford for what is probably end of season maintenance. It was a nice surprise to see it there on Thursday. It went back to North Connel yesterday.

oh Steve, I really feel for ya - not the nicest of trips with that weather, but watching your edited video was a pleasure - you are so experienced and excellent in the filming, that I feel, I have been there with you! I visited Iona many times (from where you can just about see Tiree and the lighthouse), but never made it to Tiree, so I was very curious about seeing anything of the island, and this was very informative to me - thanks shall you have - as always! And despite the 'hardship' of the trip, you didn't loose your sense of humour... you made me laugh several times! :)

I found it really disconcerting that the controls for the plane were under the roof - but then I'm a nervous flyer anyway! I guess we'll have to wait to see if you got trapped on the island and did the 12 mile trek to the pub!
The throttles you mean. That isn't uncommon for smaller twin engined utility planes, and some flying boats I think.
You certainly do get your fair share of bad weather on your trips. That soup looked great, and wow those cakes !! Looking forward to part 2, here's hoping for better weather - but i have my doubts Steve ! :)
