  • Today is my first day in the Central Vietman city of Danang and I plan to eat as much delicious Vietnamese food as humanly possible. For my first meal I headed to one of the best and most well known Bánh Xèo shops in Da Nang called Bánh Xèo Bà Dưỡng.
Usually I avoid ultra hyped up places but this super busy back alley shop lived up to expectation and more. This could be the best banh xeo I’ve ever had!
    What I ordered:
    Bánh Xèo
    70.000 ₫
    Nem lụi
    7.000
    Bún Thịt Nướng
    30.000 ₫
    Bò Nướng Lá Lốt
    90.000 ₫
Directions to Bánh Xèo Bà Dưỡng:
    goo.gl/maps/wk...

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this UA-cam channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

Totally agree what you said about not being afraid of entering somewhere without the language. In my early days in Japan we’d go into places, not being able to read kanji, and just randomly point at the menu and say in Japanese, this one please.

Yeah, no eggs in them (although someone somewhere is putting eggs in them just to be different). I'd call them Vietnamese sizzling crepes vs pancakes. Crepes are thin and have a bit more texture vs pancakes that are fluffy/thick and soft.

Aha, I thought you had said you were going to Viet Nam, and I'm glad you did. Those dishes you had in this were something else, particularly the pork liver sauce and that big leaf with the slices of beef. I actually made a big bowl of pho yesterday with what I had on hand, so it was a combo of beef stock from Germany, rice stick noodles from Korea, green chili paste, tamarind paste, galangal and makrut lime leaves, Red Boat fish sauce from Thailand (and a healthy dash of Isaan/Lao fish sauce), double fermented soy sauce and Hoisin sauce from China, toasted sesame sauce and furikake kimchi seasoning herbs and fish from Japan, plus some Italian basil leaves from our home grown herbs. I also put in some mushrooms from around the world that I reconstituted along with the dried galangal, plus some torn up meat from a baby back rib that we had barbecued with apple bbq sauce, some cut up mini cucumbers, and sliced tomatoes and shallots. Lettuce leaves on the side to cool the palate. I know its not what some would call authentic Vietnamese pho, but having done some reading I get that the trick is to do what you want with what you have on hand. And it was so freaking delicious, I surprised myself so much I'm still talking about it. Anyhow, I'm waiting for those posts you teased with about the two foods that farangs or Westerners will never eat.

@@theroamingcook I do have what basic herbs, spices, sauces, pastes and condiments I can source locally or online, not only for Thai and Asian foods, but Latin, Caribbean, Italian and Eastern European, but have more difficulty getting fresh produce like lemon grass, cilantro, and other specialties, so I often have to make do. That makes cooking creative though, so I enjoy it, especially when it turns out better than I could have expected. I still haven't stopped talking about that pho, enough so that Carol, my partner, says she wants to try it the next time I make it. Of course I never do precise measurements, so it'll be same, same, but different. Looking forward to the rest of this Viet Nam series.

About banh xeo: most places in Vietnam will cook it up and serve it with the shrimp shell left on it. I'm not a fan of eating shrimp with the shell on, so I ask them to take that off before cooking it. Otherwise you'd have to go dig through your banh xeo and remove it yourself, get your fingers messy. Most places will probably accommodate you, if you're like me.

    • @theroamingcook
      @theroamingcook  Рік тому

Next time I’ll ask! It’s not something I’m usually a fan of which is why I was surprised in the video when I bit in and wasn’t bothered by it here. Must be good haha

Oh, yeah the places I've gone for banh xeo, they didn't have the rice paper wrap, just the lettuce. Also, I haven't seen that darker sauce with banh xeo. I'm in Saigon, so maybe they do it different here.

While Vietnamese food is amazing; you have to be careful not to get scammed. Vietnamese vendors see foreigners as ATMs and will charge more than locals while giving much less. I'm sure that you're not gonna catch it in the video bc Gary is filming so they won't do any shady stuff😅. My message to all of those interested in Vietnam; don't overpay and don't get scammed. Never take a menu in English but instead take the Vietnamese menu and translate it.

    • @EllisWR

Hey mate you can just ask the price of something before ordering and then shouldn't have any problems, most places I've eaten show prices anyway only markets you need to be on your game and even then I find Vietnamese people to be extremely honest outside of tourist zones. Can't say I've ever been treated as an ATM here or paid more than locals honestly. Fingers crossed
