    All my great aunts swore to the powers of the soda added to the tea for clarity and taste. It’s like the trick of a dash of salt on your coffee grinds before you start your machine.

    • @Akula114
      @Akula114 3 роки тому +2

      A big Roger That on the salt in coffee. If you're resistant, just put some on the tip of your finger and add that. Tiny amount. Pretty soon I think it helps you enjoy any coffee, any where. Rather than being picky, I just compare the different tastes to what I enjoy at home.
      I just learned that a couple or three small drops of water keep the grounds from sticking in the grinder. (A problem with the little hand held Braun-type electric).
      Now that I'm beginning to enjoy tea, I can't wait to try the baking soda! I can see how that might prevent the caffeine and the tannic acid from forming that cloudy precipitate. Dang, the last time I tried to make iced tea with no proper Southern instruction it ended looking like muddy chocolate milk... I kept expecting a frog to jump out.
      I appreciate all the comments, funny or informative. Cheers!

    I've noticed that when you add something acidic to tea, it loses some of it's beautiful color. By adding Baking Soda, I believe you are making the water more alkaline, which makes the color of the tea more beautiful. I just learned this from your video. Thanks.

I learned to place 3 bags in a medium sized bowl of water and microwave then put 3 quarts of water in a pitcher and mix it all together with a lot of sugar. Im sure everyone would agree that nothing beats sweet tea from mcdonalds though.

  • @Appoggitura
    @Appoggitura 11 років тому +10

    I'm from the south and I must agree that sweetness is subjective. We have always used the Kool-Aid guidelines. It recommends 1 cup of sugar per 2 quarts, so for a gallon that would be 2 cups of sugar. I have been known to use as many as 3 cups of sugar especially when making really strong tea and using a few extra tea bags. Also, Ice dilutes the flavor and sweetness, so we compensate for that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and their own tastes. Enjoy; however you like your tea! :-)

    First off, if you steep the tea bags in the water OFF the stove top as the recipe suggests, then there is ZERO chance the tags fall onto the burner and ignite. We don't need to take precautions for something that, in this case, cannot possibly happen.
    Second off, I have always heard that southern sweet tea is traditionally served at room temperature with ice on the side. I guess I was wrong about this.

  • @MrJobe007

    into an electric or stove Kettle, add the 1 gallon tea bag, boil for 3 to 5 minutes, then pour it into the 1 gallon empty pitcher, 2 cups of sugar and 2 single serve packets of True Lemon, stir and put inside fridge. Enjoy everyday.

    Soooooooooo I've been doing Iced tea wrong all these past 40 years😢. Who knew😮 a pinch of baking soda would make a world of difference. 😂 Side note: My sister and I were traveling with my parents across country and we made a HUGE MISTAKE when asked if we wanted regular iced tea and we said yes. Oh no, it wasn't pretty....the sugar in the tea 🤯 blew that tea right out of our mouths and into our napkin. You see, were from the south and had never experienced tea with sugar. We grew up with iced tea and a lemon tree in SoCal. I'm sure when we asked for PLAIN TEA with lots of lemon we provided the ENTIRE restaurant with a laugh. My twin sister and I have improved our pallets and enjoy this delightful version of iced tea...but, I can't lie...the majority of the time it's still plain tea with 🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋 Thanks for the great tip and a perfect tea.❤❤❤❤

    Almost the correct recipe-but not quite. You should fill your pot with more water, throw in the six tea bags and bring it to a boil. The pinch of baking soda goes in just as it comes to a boil. It will foam up, so leave a bit of room in the pot if you use the baking soda. After the tea comes to a boil put the lid on and remove from heat. Let it sit and “steep” for a loooooong time. I leave my tea out overnight. Southern Tea should be strong enough to kick. Put 2 cups of sugar in a gallon jug or pitcher. (3/4 cup of sugar means it’s the end of the month and you’re having to stretch the groceries till payday.) Stir in the brewed tea to dissolve the sugar. Add water to fill the jug. Cool in the refrigerator or serve with ice. Add lemon if you want. But personally, I don’t know of any real Southern old-timer who would. Save the lemons for lemonade.

    One cup of sugar is good per gallon for us but the method works well

    I'm thinking Beckie's granny's pinch of baking soda is probably the "secret" ingredient which is exactly why I'm watching this video. lol

    Thats 2, maybe 2 and a half us quarts at most lol. Anyway its similar to how I do it. Though I like to flavor my pot by adding bag or 2 of cup sized peach or mint herbal tea in with the black tea bags and instead of cutting with cold water I just use a bunch of ice. That way its cold and ready to drink instantly after most of the ice melts.
