John Hancock and I will make a SEGA GENESIS BUYING GUIDE soon... what Top 10 MUST OWN games would you recommend? Not necessarily hidden gems...but if you had to only own 10, what would they be?
Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Earthworm Jim, Sonic 2, Truxton, Ghouls n Ghosts, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Ghostbusters, Space Harrier 2, NBA Jam T.E.
1. Gunstar Heroes, 2. Thunder Force IV (aka Lightening Force), 3. Streets of Rage 2, 4. Contra Hard Corps, 5. M.U.S.H.A, 6. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 7. Strider, 8. Shining Force II, 9. Mickey's Castle of Illusion, 10. Castlevania Bloodlines. Honorable mentions: TMNT Hyperstone Heist, Rocket Knight Adventures, Revenge of Shinobi, Road Rash, Truxton.
Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania, Sonic, Sonic 2, Shining Force 2, Streets of Rage 2, Wonderboy V, Mortal Kombat 2, world of illusion starring Mickey and Donald, Golden Axe, Moonwalker, Strider (10 is not enough :) )
Man, when I saw the list in the description, I was looking for to see what Mr. Hancock would say about Ranger-X. That is a game that I discovered because of Classic Game Room and became one of my favorites for the Genesis. Very nice choice! Edit: the entire list is great (I really love these Genesis episodes), I just have a soft spot for Ranger-X now.
Poverty Gamer , I'll go as far and say the best RTS of all time. Every rts since then has borrowed shamelessly from it. Sure, Blizzard has great rts computer titles. But Herzog Zwei rules over all, even today.
Soldiers of Fortune. Originally known as The Chaos Engine in the UK and Europe, it was first published on the Amiga, before being ported to the Genesis, Super Nintendo, MS-DOS, Atari ST and Risc OS. Genesis version seems to be the closest to the Amiga in my view. And it's awesome. Two players, or single player and CPU assist. Steampunk shoot-em-up. What's not to love?
Thank you John Hancock and Metal Jesus, for the longest time i could not remember the name of the game Target Earth, that was such a great game and a hidden gem of Sega.
Metaljesusrocks rocks. Everytime I watch one of his uploads it reminds me of the saying 'there are no strangers only friends we haven't met yet'. One love, Jah bless and keep on keeping on!
Some hidden gems which I love for Sega are Kid Chameleon and DeCap Attack. I'm not sure if they are popular, but if not they are for sure hidden gems in my opinion. Always love the videos Metal Jesus, and The Immortal John Hancock!!!
So awesome target earth is on hidden gems. The game soundtrack is pretty epic!! Not really a hidden gym but i a huge fan of road rash which has awesome levels, great music and allows you to purchase new bikes as you progress through the game such a great racing game
I'm not sure if any of these were covered before, but some hidden gems for the Genesis that I like are: Ghostbusters, Dune II, and Soldiers of Fortune (aka The Chaos Engine).
i owned general chaos don't recall being overly excited by it. loved the gargoyles show as a kid might check out the game cause aladdin the game was good. ranger x is another i recall and is pretty cool.great list guys
Some more hidden gems: Herzog Zwei, Exile, Turrican, Mega Turrican, Dune: BA, Warsong, Battlemaster, Sorcerer's Kingdom, Saint Sword... Just to name a few.
Man, I actually used to have Gargoyles, so good, I want to find another copy again. I know of another Hidden Gem on the Sega Genesis... the Sega Genesis version of "RoboCop vs. The Terminator". Based on the 4-Part Crossover Comics with the same name. Its a Run and Gun Platformer game like Contra, and has a variety of Weapons. Great looking game when it comes to the Graphics. Also, this version is known for the Blood for when you shoot human enemies, they blow up into a bloody mess.
Thunderfox, where you can play as two characters: orange pants guy or blue pants guy. The story takes place on laundry day so they didn't have any clean shirts to wear.
I love these videos, gives me ideas on what to add to my collection. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Ghostbusters for the genesis. Easily one of the best Ghostbusters video games and very rare at that
Target Earth is the prequel to Cybernator for the Snes. It has more sequels on the Saturn. Also known as Assault Suit Leynos. Metal Warriors on the snes by Lucas Arts is a spiritual spin off.
My favorite Genesis/Megadrive game is missing :) Lightening Force! (Thunder Force IV on the Megadrive) In my mind one of the best Shmups ever on any system. Amazing graphics and great music
John, baby, can I talk to you over here... I think we both know who the real talent is here, Johnny. You ditch this "Jebus" guy and you and me, we can make ten thousand Ugandan dollars, each!
Star Control was the type of game you couldn't find on Snes at the time I was an older teen and liked the pc like game the Genesis delivered.Shame they didn't port more dos and Amiga title the amiga 500 had Genesis hardware and could have been ported np.
Did the states get Sensible Soccer. Its not a hidden gem in Europe but i bet it is there if it was released. One of the greatest sports games in gaming history.
Yeah thats definitely the best version but the console ports were still fantastic. Plus these guys have been showing a few md/gen games ported from PC.
I'm watching, thinking to myself. How in the hell is Ranger x not on this list. Seconds later last on his list. Ranger x. I personally don't think the controls are that complicated. Out of all my awesome sega games this rocket knight adventures and hyperstone heist get the most play.
I take umbrage at the comment at 5:55 "Especially on a console" as it's my opinion that the Amiga version not only SOUNDED better, it PLAYED better. That said, for one of the first 12mb games (IIRC) it WAS pretty good on the Genesis.
That game seems interesting, it's graphics aren't too great but the soundtrack is incredible (and to the detriment of Snes fanboys), proves that the Gen chip can handle orchestral scores no problem. Gauntlet IV does as well. I'll try it someday.
It has good graphics and animation, but I didn't like the level design and didn't find it very fun. It just kind of felt all over the place and not very well structured from the 3 levels I played. I wouldn't recommend it.
again you forgot WARSONG which no one knows about, one of the BEST strategy games, and it is RARE. Also it has many sequals called Langriser. Also iif it is yourfirst time playing it dont expect to beat the 1st round just run to the north. The game gets more addicting after stage 5. Also once you lose your general you control he is gone for good. example of the game ua-cam.com/video/kP4GwYw0RUI/v-deo.html
Hi Metal Jesus, Im from Mexico, i want have a collection like you, but i cant for problems with money. You think is ok if i use emulators. I really love play video game and more retro games. What you think?
Gargoyles and the ooze are both games I've been looking for for some time now. But I've heard from people that ooze has horrible controls that make it slightly unplayable, anyone know if that's true?
Tom Wilson I'll be going to white-collar/people prison. I don't think there would be an issue with Mexican cartels... or scoring drugs inside the prison. Anyway, I'd rather somebody stayed on top of MetalJesus' video game stock tips, I'm going to need start up cash once I get out.
If you need two guys on youtube to tell you how to value Genesis games that have been out for almost thirty years, perhaps low-fee index funds are more to your investment speed than individual stock picks.....
Im ashamed to say ive never owned a Genesis and the only games ive ever played are Mortal Kombat and the first Sonic. lol.. I was always a Nintendo kid growing up. The only Sega platforms ive owned are Game Gear and a Dreamcast.
If you do a 4th hidden gems list, these are ones I can think of right away: Warsong Master of Monsters Arcus Odyssey Valis 3 Lotus Racing Splatterhouse 3 Cyborg Justice Shadowrun General Chaos Speedball 2 As for must own games (actually added 11): Streets of Rage 2 Phantasy Star 4 Master of Monsters (or Warsong) Road Rash 1 Herzog Zwei Sonic 2 Gunstar Heroes Shining Force 2 Mutant League Football or Hockey XMen 2: Clone Wars Gain Ground Honorable mention for must own goes to Strider (too short), Castlevania: Bloodlines (SNES and TG16 ones are better), Contra: Hard Corps (SNES contra is better), Rock and Roll Racing (SNES version is better)
John Hancock and I will make a SEGA GENESIS BUYING GUIDE soon... what Top 10 MUST OWN games would you recommend? Not necessarily hidden gems...but if you had to only own 10, what would they be?
Thunder Force IV for sure. That game has it all.
Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Earthworm Jim, Sonic 2, Truxton, Ghouls n Ghosts, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Ghostbusters, Space Harrier 2, NBA Jam T.E.
1. Gunstar Heroes, 2. Thunder Force IV (aka Lightening Force), 3. Streets of Rage 2, 4. Contra Hard Corps, 5. M.U.S.H.A, 6. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 7. Strider, 8. Shining Force II, 9. Mickey's Castle of Illusion, 10. Castlevania Bloodlines. Honorable mentions: TMNT Hyperstone Heist, Rocket Knight Adventures, Revenge of Shinobi, Road Rash, Truxton.
I would recommend the Shining Force series. They are great strategy RPG's.
Gunstar Heroes, Castlevania, Sonic, Sonic 2, Shining Force 2, Streets of Rage 2, Wonderboy V, Mortal Kombat 2, world of illusion starring Mickey and Donald, Golden Axe, Moonwalker, Strider (10 is not enough :) )
I know this was an older video but it made me happy to see Target Earth get some love. One of my first Genesis games, and I played the hell out of it.
Man, when I saw the list in the description, I was looking for to see what Mr. Hancock would say about Ranger-X. That is a game that I discovered because of Classic Game Room and became one of my favorites for the Genesis. Very nice choice!
Edit: the entire list is great (I really love these Genesis episodes), I just have a soft spot for Ranger-X now.
check out Herzog Zwei. It's the best RTS game of the 16-bit era
Poverty Gamer , I'll go as far and say the best RTS of all time. Every rts since then has borrowed shamelessly from it. Sure, Blizzard has great rts computer titles. But Herzog Zwei rules over all, even today.
It was remade for modern consoles under the name airmech arena . Herzog is one of my all time faves.

Metaljesusrocks rocks. Everytime I watch one of his uploads it reminds me of the saying 'there are no strangers only friends we haven't met yet'. One love, Jah bless and keep on keeping on!
The ooze! I used to play that game all the time back in the day on my Sega Radica Plug N Play ;)
Star Control
damn right!
Best game ever! I have SC2 in the box lol 6 floppys!
Star Control 2 THE reason to get a 3do. Me and my brother played that game to death growing up.
Your photo is exquisite, sir!
Thousand times yes
thank you metal jesus! watching your videos keep me going in bad days!
Target Earth is an excellent game and thoroughly enjoyed it and now I'm also enjoying Assault Suit Leynos on my PS4 which is from the HD remake.
Star Control is one of the best Genesis games.
@MichelleObama isAman I'll take it over every Sonic ever.
I'm not sure if any of these were covered before, but some hidden gems for the Genesis that I like are: Ghostbusters, Dune II, and Soldiers of Fortune (aka The Chaos Engine).
Target Earth. I love the music in that game, grew up playing this game, really good once you get in to it.
Another awesome video! Thanks! I'm in Tacoma and I'll see you guys at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo this year
Just bought Gargoyles. Thanks for the suggestions Metal Jesus and Mr. John Hancock!
i owned general chaos don't recall being overly excited by it. loved the gargoyles show as a kid might check out the game cause aladdin the game was good. ranger x is another i recall and is pretty cool.great list guys
MetalJesus you really need to do more PC stuff, you have so much knowledge about it that would benefit the videos!
Some more hidden gems: Herzog Zwei, Exile, Turrican, Mega Turrican, Dune: BA, Warsong, Battlemaster, Sorcerer's Kingdom, Saint Sword... Just to name a few.
Oh man I remember having SO MUCH FUN with General Chaos
Man, I actually used to have Gargoyles, so good, I want to find another copy again.
I know of another Hidden Gem on the Sega Genesis... the Sega Genesis version of "RoboCop vs. The Terminator". Based on the 4-Part Crossover Comics with the same name. Its a Run and Gun Platformer game like Contra, and has a variety of Weapons. Great looking game when it comes to the Graphics. Also, this version is known for the Blood for when you shoot human enemies, they blow up into a bloody mess.
Target Earth was one of the early games I played on Sega Genesis. So much fun. I could never get passed the 2nd level lol
WWF Rumble Royal, NBA Jam, NHLPA 93 were my favourites
Awesome list. Man I really dont know the genesis library, only knew the ooze. Love all the couch co op games
Thunderfox, where you can play as two characters: orange pants guy or blue pants guy. The story takes place on laundry day so they didn't have any clean shirts to wear.
dune battle for aracis is a great port of dune 2 from pc to genesis as well as dune for sega cd. dune 2 got me into the rts genre
Could please make another hidden gem video on PS2/Xbox original games?
I love these videos, gives me ideas on what to add to my collection. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Ghostbusters for the genesis. Easily one of the best Ghostbusters video games and very rare at that
More ps2 hidden gems please!!!! There's such a huge library of Games so there's got to be loads more games to show
one of my favorite games for the Genesis / PC
Target Earth is the prequel to Cybernator for the Snes. It has more sequels on the Saturn. Also known as Assault Suit Leynos. Metal Warriors on the snes by Lucas Arts is a spiritual spin off.
Kid chameleon! One of my favorites, I buy it on every platform I can, Haha.
My favorite Genesis/Megadrive game is missing :)
Lightening Force! (Thunder Force IV on the Megadrive)
In my mind one of the best Shmups ever on any system. Amazing graphics and great music
these genesis videos are the BEST.
don't forget about:
SKITCHIN'
Jerry Gladvilles Pigskin Footbrawl
Alicia Dragoon
I grew up playing Ranger X, its a shame it wasnt a bigger game, that box art was awesome
the Genesis will be the next console I add to my collection. seems like there's some cool games for it.
Rambo III for Genesis. I think it's a gem, how good it is hidden I do not know. But I do know it's still the best Rambo ever made.
I love Master of monsters. There was a sequel for the Saturn, never had the chance to play it.
Atomic Robo Kid was fun when I played it as a kid on the Atari ST. I wonder if it held up on the Genesis
I love Kinzilla and would happily spend the rest of my life playing games with the sister of the microchip and the sprite!
John Hancock is always introduced as "The Immortal".... there can only be one.
John, baby, can I talk to you over here...
I think we both know who the real talent is here, Johnny. You ditch this "Jebus" guy and you and me, we can make ten thousand Ugandan dollars, each!
How about Haunting Starring Polterguy? Now that is one unique and obscure game!
I'm glad to see Al Borland doing well.
Ranger X is fantastic. Might be top 20 on the Genesis for me...
Metal Jesus, please do 3DS buying guide and 3DS hidden gems with Kelsey or Kinsey. Also, please do a part 2 of your 3DS e-shop hidden gem.
Star Control was the type of game you couldn't find on Snes at the time I was an older teen and liked the pc like game the Genesis delivered.Shame they didn't port more dos and Amiga title the amiga 500 had Genesis hardware and could have been ported np.
Ranger-X gameplay is actually GREAT :)
Ranger X is the best, one of my favorite games on the Genesis
I remember General Chaos! I honestly thought it was a false memory for many years.
I had Ranger-X it was awesome!! :D
Ristar would be considered a hidden gem?
Did the states get Sensible Soccer. Its not a hidden gem in Europe but i bet it is there if it was released. One of the greatest sports games in gaming history.
Apparently it was renamed Championship Soccer 94 & was only the Sega CD version was released over there.
That was an Amiga game really though before it was released on every platform ever. I wonder what happened to Sensible Software...
Yeah thats definitely the best version but the console ports were still fantastic. Plus these guys have been showing a few md/gen games ported from PC.
Tru. They should do Basketball Nightmare too, that was a pretty good.
Caliber .50 reminds me of Secret Command for the master system.
Woohooo! It's time for the Jesus!
You should talk about the punisher on the sg. It's a port of the arcade game of the same name
Thunder fox love that game only played it on ps2 though
I'm watching, thinking to myself. How in the hell is Ranger x not on this list. Seconds later last on his list. Ranger x. I personally don't think the controls are that complicated. Out of all my awesome sega games this rocket knight adventures and hyperstone heist get the most play.

That said, for one of the first 12mb games (IIRC) it WAS pretty good on the Genesis.
Warlock, Vectorman, Sunset Riders, and True Lies.
love it, love bein' here
Master of Monsters is one of the best Genesis games period.
That game seems interesting, it's graphics aren't too great but the soundtrack is incredible (and to the detriment of Snes fanboys), proves that the Gen chip can handle orchestral scores no problem. Gauntlet IV does as well. I'll try it someday.
Dinosaurs for hire! try that shit.
Hey!, i really liked the contra one.
if you want a more "casual" type of game on genesis, try Puggsy
Demolition Man for Genesis was a great game, way much better than the movie
Gargoyles looks amazing kinda reminds of the batman animated series esthetics
It has good graphics and animation, but I didn't like the level design and didn't find it very fun. It just kind of felt all over the place and not very well structured from the 3 levels I played. I wouldn't recommend it.
I LOVED Ranger X
Ranger X is a awesome game :)
Hell yeah Ranger X.
I loved caliber .50
John my good man. I have asked you before, and haven't gotten a response. But I need to know where you got that hat. I simply must have one.
Haunting Staring Polterguy.
The Ooze.... so splatoon wasn't really new with that idea?
Was landstalker a hidden gem, or was it popular?
Ranger X was a cool game.
I remember Ranger X!
For some reason I used think midnight resistance was Rambo as a kid lol
Hey metaljesus did you hear the new metallica single?
space harrier 2 SO GOOD
again you forgot WARSONG which no one knows about, one of the BEST strategy games, and it is RARE. Also it has many sequals called Langriser. What's your opinion of A Haunting starring Polterguy?
i love general chaos
Hi Metal Jesus, Im from Mexico, i want have a collection like you, but i cant for problems with money. You think is ok if i use emulators. I really love play video game and more retro games. What you think?
this vedio had better games for me..I own 3 of those games and 2others I will try to buy them or just play them on emulator
ROCK N ROLL RACING!!!
Please make a Dreamcast buyersguide!
Gargoyles and the ooze are both games I've been looking for for some time now. But I've heard from people that ooze has horrible controls that make it slightly unplayable, anyone know if that's true?
Oh no, Metaljesus released a new hidden gems Video. Quick, we have like 10 minutes until the scalpers arrive to buy these games.
+Sheepy007 Patreon subscribers get these videos early if that's a concern for you
Sweet, with your advance advice it should work out well for me. Basically like insider trading.
If you don't already own these games...doesn't that make you a scalper like the rest of us?!? :-P
I'm still waiting for you guys to include Story of Thor / Beyond Oasis ;)
I remember EGM and some other mags back in the day making a BIIIIG DEAL about Star Control being the first 12-meg cartridge on Genesis.
That gargoyles game is awesome! Loved watching the show as a kid.
Donald in Maui Mallard: Cold Shadow
More people have to know about this amazing platformer, almost like Earthworm Jim.
The Immortal John is awesome! Always dropping some serious SEGA knowledge on titles I've never heard about. Looking forward to many more, thanks MJR.
id love to see "worst genesis/mega drive games"
Beast Wrestler.
Doesn't get much worse than that.
+ttvCarn Beast wrestler is baaaaaaad.
+Terrell Sparvier OK OK those might be worse..at least the beast character art looks decent.
El Viento is the only game they ever made that I got real enjoyment out of, and most of that was the wackiness.
Barney's Hide and Seek
Im ashamed to say ive never owned a Genesis and the only games ive ever played are Mortal Kombat and the first Sonic. lol.. I was always a Nintendo kid growing up. The only Sega platforms ive owned are Game Gear and a Dreamcast.
Personally I miss Herzog Zwei on the list. Ive played it soooo much with friends, but before I mention it, nobody seems to know the game.
That game is pure gold. 10/10 for me.
Yes....surely this needs to be added. Perhaps it wasn't released in the US?
One of the first Genesis games released, it's the only one that I still play today. I look at the others, but i never play them.
That's the biggest hidden gem ever.
A great game. Just like they have Master of Monsters, two games that were my favourites.
Star Control and Herzog Zwei are two overlooked greats!
emmapeel38 I kept my Sega CD all because of 2P Star Control. :)
If you do a 4th hidden gems list, these are ones I can think of right away:
Warsong
Master of Monsters
Arcus Odyssey
Valis 3
Lotus Racing
Splatterhouse 3
Cyborg Justice
Shadowrun
General Chaos
Speedball 2
As for must own games (actually added 11):
Streets of Rage 2
Phantasy Star 4
Master of Monsters (or Warsong)
Road Rash 1
Herzog Zwei
Sonic 2
Gunstar Heroes
Shining Force 2
Mutant League Football or Hockey
XMen 2: Clone Wars
Gain Ground
Honorable mention for must own goes to Strider (too short), Castlevania: Bloodlines (SNES and TG16 ones are better), Contra: Hard Corps (SNES contra is better), Rock and Roll Racing (SNES version is better)
