    One thing I always recommend for the Sega CD/Mega CD is to replace the power supplies with a modern all-in-one version from a company like retrogamesupply.com. They make modern laptop-style power supplies for various consoles which run off a single mains plug, and have versions that will work on any combination of Sega Genesis/Sega CD and or 32X. And as the power supplies are laptop-style, they'll work in any region - you just need an appropriate mains to figure-eight style cable, like you'll find on almost any printer, the PS3 slim, etc.

    I think the reason why Sega CD is finally catching on is because it was always a good system, but it had a bad stigma for so long for it's FMV library, which was actually pretty minimal. Once you know which games to weed out, the Sega CD is amazing to collect for.

    • @RodniDemental
      @RodniDemental 8 років тому

      It's also been just the right of time (20 years) for certain people to start looking back on it as a nostalgic artifact from their childhood but now actually be able to afford the system. This happened to me with Sega Saturn and Dreamcast a few years back where I started collecting for them; - systems I never got as a kid because well.. I already had a 'Sega' and apparently didn't need another one plus it was too expensive back then.
      There always were good games for sure, yet there has always been this stigma towards the Mega CD that you sometimes see. I honestly think it's more the poor marketing that failed the system and resentment towards Sega flooding the market in the late 90s than actually having a poor library (unlike the early US library of Saturn games which seemed to completely miss the point of the console's potential)

      I just can't see the point in Sega CD, even now. The CD rom didn't really add anything other than cutscenes and better sound. It just isn't worth it. Think about the cutscenes that are in modern games, no one ever actually watches them, we just skip through because they are annoying. As for the sound the megadrive already had awesome FM sound so sampled music whilst cool isn't really that much of an upgrade, unless you're an audio nerd.

      You pretty much have to swap Sega CD, Saturn, and early PS1 long box cases. Unfortunately, they are notoriously easy to crack, and the hinges, if not careful, can break too. Unlike normal CD cases where you can go to Walmart or Target and get replacements to make them look almost brand new, those longbox cases are pretty much non existent unless you were to raids Sega's warehouse. I am currently a very late to the game Saturn & Sega CD collector and I found several rare games recently where the cases needed to be swapped to look nice. It's really your only option if you care about original packaging.

    I got into the SEGA CD on the ground floor luckily, and I still have my original top loader from '93; still works too (amazingly). I've semi-retired it to preserve it though, so I use a JVC X'Eye as my workhorse system. If you can find one, I highly recommend it. No issues playing burned games, and it has the best sound output of all SEGA Genesis/CD setups. Pricey but practical. Can't fault John Hancock's selections; but I'd add Eternal Champions, Batman Returns, Silpheed and Mortal Kombat to the list if you're starting out. Mortal Kombat gets a lot of flak for load times, but it's the best 16-bit version of the game. Enjoyed the video Metal! 🤘

    • @dacypher22
      @dacypher22 5 років тому

      I realize this was 2 years ago, but have you ever checked how much the X'Eye is to fix? Because as you mentioned, it is expensive. I would probably go the other way and retire the X'Eye since it is rare, parts may be hard to come by and it may be hard to fix and run the top-loader into the ground since they are the cheapest of all the Sega CDs, the easiest to fix, etc.

      a few reasons:
      price charts doesn't take into account condition
      sales of sealed copies are rare and go back into the past when games were cheaper
      price charts often accidentally allows cibs into sold listings, I have seen it tons of times
      games are getting more expensive on the daily.
      the price can basically be decided by the seller when theres probably less than 100 sealed copies in existance.

    CDX is compatible with the 32X, but there is a special 32X base you had to get to allow the CD cover to open without detaching the 32X. I believe there is even a diagram in the 32X manual that shows the different configurations.

    For me this is such a nostalgia ride. I myself and my friends used to play Sega Megadrive back in the day. In Europe Sega was in many cases the superior system with it's broad variety of games.
    But few ever owned a Mega Cd or Sega Cd. It's a obscure system with a mysterious aura. There a lot of good games though. Some day I will play Shining Force CD or the Lunar games........
    Ohh and what a huge difference in graphics when comparing Road Rash on Mega Cd and Playstation. That tells a lot about how fast the tecnology improved back then......

      Fun fact for Keio Flying Squadron. They actually released a demo in Europe. Crazy thing about the demo, JVC left the level select code leaving the full game accessible. It comes up on ebay from time to time for about $40. So if you have a Mega Everdrive, or a way to region free your console, you can technically have a physical copy of the game. :)

      It's interesting that you (along with many others) bring this up. I mean, these are really cool buying guides from people who know what they're talking about, but when it comes to the games especially, they're like "these are games we recommend you get day one," and many of them turn out to be super expensive and/or really rare. Sure they're good but buying them right off the bat seems suggesting too much.

      Unless you're a super hardcore collector who needs to be %100 original, just get custom reproductions of the super expensive games. People mock them up to look almost like the real thing, case, manual, and all.
