QUESTION: If you're currently managing an artist, what made you choose to work with them? If you're not currently managing anyone, what are you looking for in a future project?

When I first started I accidentally started managing a band when their original manager bailed. I found it to be a rewarding experience. I decided that I wanted to start managing as an actual job. Now I am purposely trying to get out and manage bands.

I started managing as a joke with my best friend because I wanted to go to his shows and get backstage for free. Ended up tour managing with some of my closest friends after that and had an amazing time and learned a lot. Fast forward 6 years I’m a partner in a small management agency with my close friend with 14 artists, and started my own event production company and record label too

Couple years late to see this video, I’ve been interested in being apart of the music industry for a couple years, actually made a couple songs myself but I didn’t feel right about making music. But I definitely know I want to be apart of that music lifestyle and a couple of my friends make music and they have the looks, the clothes, the cars. So I’ve been trying to push them to make music so I actually don’t know if I purposely became one or accidentally but I definitely am trying to learn the game. This video is the first one I came across and I actually learned a lot, thank you for that and it would mean a lot if you can get back to me!

    Hi!
I actually fell into the position of becoming an artist manager. I am an American living in Belgium, and I am tutoring English. One of my students is a country singer and wanted to feel more comfortable in speaking and writing English. Months go by and I have started matching her with country artists in the states. I am currently managing 3 artist (country singer, r&b singer and beat producer) all from Belgium. I absolutely love it.
I have two degrees in Management and I think I have found my calling accidentally. These videos are very interesting and I need all the help I can get.

I used to be an artist / producer and later a trained studio engineer for a number of years. One of my old friends asked me to be his hypeman to get people into his music, but knowing that he actually needs a businessman at this point in his career i offered to be his manager instead. Now, unfortunately i knew this arrangment was a dead end from the start, but the idea of being a manager piqued my interest so i approached another old rap friend.. and he bought in! So I'm here reading books and watching your videos for my studies.

A very interesting video, seen from many angles in the world of management, how an independent manager works versus one linked to a company, how not to get overwhelmed with work when representing an artist in any field, and the difficulties that arise in this industry, whether it's seeking employment, finding an artist, or building contacts. Thank you for sharing your knowledge

Actively seeking to manage a friend's career. She's an amazing talent. as n old timer, I feel like I can supply wisdom, creative ideas, and conduct business in a way that keeps her fresh, enthusiastic and (most of all) paid and not taken advantage of. I'm also involved in a network of independent musical performers and artists, seasoned and amateur who are all at various levels on our local scene. Most of them respect me and enjoy my company and consider me to be a type of mentor. I'm beginning to realize that they are almost all unmanaged and could benefit from having someone invest their time into helping their careers, whether it's marketing, time management, encouragement or even bookkeeping and goal setting, I've operated a specialty contracting business and can't help but wonder if what I've learned winning "gigs" in my world would be similar to the same in helping these amazing talented people in theirs?

I agree on many things, but the most important thing is that in the world of management, connections are very important since they are what help us to move in this industry, it should be noted that we must also have a talented artist since that will make it easier for us to I work to move it forward. I also believe that the better we educate ourselves academically, the easier it will be to get ahead. You don't need a degree, but we do have to prepare ourselves and learn about this business to develop more easily and that everything goes well.

@@chilufysjoseph3584 buy a book on social media advertising, buy a book on marketing and by the book titled everything you want to know about the music business. It's all about building the brand now we're at a point where we have the 1000 loyal fans meaning that he's actually got close to 30,000 fans but we can guarantee that 1,000 fans will buy any of his merch. It cost us $3,000 to print a 7-in single with four songs on vinyl he can turn around and sell 500 copies at $25 after setting up a automated shipping with profit around $9,000. Normally on something like that will each take $2,500 each use $3,000 to do it again and $1,000 in marketing money and promotion. It's all about making a product and flipping it to the consumer so far we've done this five times just to build. The hardest thing is seeing a check for $10,000 show up and realizing that you need to invest at least 50% of it into marketing we've actually reached out to outside PR firms to help us and really it's about getting over the fear of calling people that you don't know and asking them questions and trying to get help and I would definitely say I would sit down with a lawyer but you're going to have to pay for that so you're going to spend money up front that you may not recruit until a year later but you have to be okay with that so it's very important that you believe in the artist. Fortunately for us I'm the producer/ DJ/ manager and he is the mc/ producer manager and we split everything 50/50 not only monetarily but also the responsibilities, but our goal from day one is to replace the income we were making in our nine to five jobs by doing music which means we both are comfortable when we get past $60,000 every single year anything other than that is a blessing

Well, there is a lot of knowing the right people as well. Whether artist or manager or agent. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. Or want to manage one. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles

I find it interesting that someone can become an artist manager without prior knowledge in the music business; however, I believe that knowledge in this field is essential as it can help us face difficult situations, prevent scams, and, on the other hand, enhance our understanding of how to navigate the music industry.

I am an artist and i would love to work with you.I think my music describes this phase that I am in very well but not in a cheap way. it's more organic.
in my opinion, I have a lot to improve but I think my songwriting ability is very good.
I think my sound and style will be influential.
I am still working and searching for my sound and because of that I have lots of different style tracks but I hope you will like it.

i’d have no knowledge about Business Manager, but I do know of a person who was a manager for an artist. Her name is Natalie Harris, and she was over the management for a gospel choir called the Los Angeles Gospel messengers, in which started on October 2, 1982 founded by the late reverend James Cleveland. And she had been the messengers manager for 40+ years.

Could you please give me some reference, How and Where can I get a certificate? I live in Kentucky but definitely it'd be a program on line because of my schedules. Thanks in advance.

Thank you! There are lots of schools that offer Music Business Management programs! Could start with Berklee Online. I figure with Covid lots of other schools are probably offering online now. I'm from Toronto and taught at Durham College's MBM program. Could look into that.
Aside from an actual college, which, in music, it's the wild west, you don't really need a formal education... so you can sign up for my course -- Professional Music Management (it teaches all about the industry), or we are starting our new Music Business Academy next week. I just posted a new video talking about it!
