After I retired from work, I returned to golf seriously starting in November 2019. Starting at 106-104 range I am now regularly shooting in the low 90's. I occasionally break 90. Your lessons have been a great help to me.
I know Rick sometimes will repeat some of the same points in his tip videos, but im a huge fan of this! There's a lot to golf, and it's nice to have these videos serve as a refresher on important things I often forget to do over time.
Here is a little tip that Rick has shown in many videos: Instead of leaving yourself with that really short crappy chip, try to leave yourself on the other side of the green with plenty of area to work the ball. For example: in the case he used, there was plenty of green after the flag, so aim for the middle of the green by using an extra club. That way, if you do end up chipping, you have the entire green to work with. Also, on your approach shots, figure out what is your most accurate short range. Mine is 50 yards, give or take. Leave yourself 50 yards short, on the side of the green with the most room, and you'll often find yourself 1 putting for par, or 2 putting for bogey, instead of risking sculling it into the next time zone!
@@charlieodom9107 This depends on other factors. Why on earth would you deliberately miss the green in the first place? If you are so good to hit it over the green, then you should be good enough to choose the right club for the job and hit on the green and put instead of chip.
Rick, the mental positivity you promote is so important. I've just started getting back into the game after being away for 10+ years. I found myself getting frustrated, but your videos have reminded me that I am not a pro. Thanks for all you do. Your tips have helped alot.
Haha. Imagine having any club whose distance and trajectory is predictable is a high-handicapper's dream. I can go out of bounds at pretty much any point until I'm putting.
I feel your pain, brother!! I used to be decent at golf. Was just below 10hcp, then I had back surgery and did not play for 8 years. Started again this summer, and the ball is going EVERYWHERE, but where I want it. lol!
I’m a player who CONSISTENTLY hits 110-115 and this video has honestly been so much help, just the mindset of these lessons really puts shots I’ve been struggling with into perspective! Thanks once again Rick! ⛳️❤️
Dude that’s awesome! I hit my first birdie last week on a par 4 and this week hit a +1 on the front 9. Trust me, I’m a 13 handicap so this was some fluke that I’ll be talking about the rest of my life. The tip I’ve found most useful is only hit with 10% effort, not speed but effort. I guess it’s the same thing as my dad always saying, “let the club do the work”. You got this though!
It's those little wins that keep us coming back for more. Finding my first par 3 green off the tee was a big boost for me when I started a few years ago, was well chuffed. 😎
I’m going to keep sharing this whenever I can. Thanks to you I have went from shooting a 150 to now my lowest score is a 92. I have broke 100 and trying to break 90. And really can’t wait to break into the 70’s. Thank you so much and love all the post you’ve posted.
As a player who regularly shoots mid-high 80s now, these tips are surprisingly applicable to my own game too Rick! Many players can benefit from this, not just the 100-ish golfer! Great video!
@@subtotheseagull5492 so we should be looking to hit the ball into trouble instead of the middle of the green? We should always take a ton of loft instead of bump and run? We’ll see you on your next week mate!
@@paceyhenke1 no my tip is playing for double bogeys right off the tee for example isn’t so good, because if you are a 100+ shooter then hitting 3 consistent 8 irons and a solid chip isn’t all that easy either, and the only reward for hitting 4 good shots is a double bogey.
So one tip I would add is "leave yourself your favourite shot", for me thats 125yd full PW. On a 400yd par 4 tee work back from the green - the percentage play for me is 2 8 irons and a PW - NOT flukey driver followed by miracle 6 iron. I just need the self discipline to remember this more often!
Golf advice is a dime a dozen but I'd really recommend getting good with a 7i on the range. Half swing, 3/4 and full 7i will get you around 110 - 145 - 170 yards respectively with compression. Such distances will likely fit 90% of the strokes you use outside (and near to) the green.
This is awesome! As a beginner, I’ve been practicing primarily with irons to get a good grasp on my swing, making contact and hitting the ball as straight as possible. I feel if I can become a great iron player, I’ll be able to be successful without yet needing to master the driver. Excited to get on a golf course!
“As long as you keep the big numbers off your card you should be ok.” Well, I’m halfway there. I use the pencils supplied by the course, just need to convince them to provide erasers.
@@mp-dd7pn I spent hundreds of dollars on golf equipment and lessons to lower my handicap and you sir... have solved it for less than one dollar. I knew I should have bought an unfair way wood.
I finally broke 100 and with a 92 and a 99 i have done it twice in a row now. More than playing better, I think I've played smarter. Abandoned my driver for a 3wood/5wood which helps me find the fairway 80% of the time. I play safer instead of trying to hit the hero shots. Try to 2 put everything. Playing smarter has helped a ton! Using a lot of concepts in the video.
Applied these tips at the course today and shot a 91! Granted I played the middle tees on a par 70 but I’ll take it. I’ve rarely ever regret “just playing it safe”. Thank you Rick, you’re a good man.
I just started playing this year and I'm super proud to say I've legitimately broken 100 twice. I've been completely obsessed with the sport since June. Last week went to the range twice and player two 18s on top of a full time job, a wife and a one year old at home 😬 worth it! Love the videos Rick. They're been a massive help and keep me really motivated.
Your content for green golfers is much appreciated. I played for the first time 2 Sundays ago and had a blast but I topped 80% of my shots. Since then I've been to the range twice. The first time I just went with a buddy so he could show me around but the 2nd time I sat down with some of your beginner swinging/stance guides and saw immediate results. I'm very comfortable with my short irons and wedges now but my mid/long irons and driver are a struggle. I know you have videos on those subjects too and I'm planning on hitting the range up again this weekend. Thanks for all the content, it helps us bad golfers tremendously.
For those golfers who are struggling like me breaking 100 is, consistent ball striking is the key because duffing the ball or topping the ball 80 yards won't help you especially if some of them end up in the bunker. Practice, practice, practice your ball striking and making sure you are hitting the centre of the club face and hitting the grass after the ball because these tips are good enough to break 100 alone. Think about it, you hook it left or slice it right off the tea. Now you can tremendously recover with a solid iron shot with the perfect ball strike
Golf Sidekicks idea of redoing par is brilliant. Cross out all the numbers on your scorecard and rewrite what par is. Make par 100 shots add one stroke to every hole than take the left over strokes and add them to the harder indexed holes. If the hardest indexed hole is a par four off of the original card you have six shots to make your new par. Also dump the driver until you can break 90.
Thanks Rick, love these types of videos. A lot of your viewers are trying to break 100 and these tips help a lot, especially that last one. I always go driver on the long holes and it usually ends up costing me
My home course is a 9 hole, par 35. We usually play it twice for the 18, par 70, and today I was able to bring my score to an 88, my first time under 90 with help from all of you're videos. Extremely grateful for the time and effort you have put into you're channel. Much Love
Thanks for this one, Rick. I’ve just taken up golf in my mid forties and will play my first game next week. Your tips and instruction have been so helpful. I have the rest of my life to explore the game but why not get off to a good start! 👍
Was pushed right into the fire and played 18 holes at Willows Run (Eagle’s Talon) with a friend and his young son. It was… outstanding. Finally the notifications are working right again. Thanks for everything over the years, Rick. Best advice I’ve ever gotten from you, “take your medicine…”’
I been there! I stuck with it like Rick said and I’m in the 90s now. At a stand still in the 90s but I have a lot more fun and the high 80s are in my sight. U got this!
I’m new to golf, I played maybe 10 rounds of 18 holes about 24 and 25 years ago, I never owned golf clubs. Last summer I played 4 rounds, borrowed clubs. Tour edge reaction 3 clubs. They were former rentals. I ended up buying them from my friend for this year. I usually shoot about 120, and my goal was to break 100 by the end of this summer. Well, I just shot my 4th round of golf this summer, my first three rounds scored 122, 120, 112, today I shot a 96! First time I ever broke 100. Using your tips, and really focused on keeping the ball in play. I’m so happy. It took me 18 rounds of golf to break 100. Idk if that’s good or bad, but I’m totally pleased. Thank you for such great content.
Here is something Rick has said many times that really works wonders. Leave your woods at home!!!!! Take ONLY irons, and use two/three equal clubs instead of a long one and short one on each hole. For example, instead of driver/short iron on a par 4, use a short iron twice, then chip on and 2 putt. If a par 5, use 3 equal clubs, say 7 iron, then chip on and putt for a 6. You want to tell yourself GIR+1. That is Green in regulation plus one shot. You will be surprised how much more fun golf will become when you can relax and just hit the ball instead of worrying about what house you're going to hit today.
@@richardstuart420 that is a major problem. You only need to hit driver a fraction of the shots on a golf course. You are in a boat that I see countless people in. When I learned to play, some 30+ years ago, it was more than a year before I ever hit a driver, because that is the least important club in the bag for a new player. In fact, to this day, I still prefer to leave the woods at home, because there really isn't a need for one on an average club course. I hit my 2 iron 230, which is plenty long enough. If I were in your shoes, then I wpuld start with 7 iron down and get those clubs to where you can hit them consistent, and play some rounds with 7 iron down only from the ladies or junior tees to see if you can make close to par. Once there, then add the long irons, then add the woods back.
Great video Rick your videos have been super useful being a self-taught golfer I've struggled to break a hundred up until this year I've broken it a few times and even shot in 84. Thanks again
I started playing golf last year, but this year especially I have played a lot. I have gotten down to 25 handicap, so a round around my handicap is right about 100. I am playing a new course tomorrow, so hopefully these tips help. Keep it up
One thing about a new course is green speed. Take the time and practice putting before the round to get a feel for green speed, or you'll likely be 3 putting if the greens are much different than your normal. I made this mistake once and ended up putting clear off the green!
If you want to break 80, then you need greens in regulation, PERIOD!!!! That is 8 over, which gives you ONLY 8 missed greens, or 8 bogeys. Par 3s is where I had the most trouble, and many of my Bogeys would happen there. Also, instead of looking at birdie opportunities, you should be thinking like Tiger...NO Bogeys. You should be thinking HOW can I play this hole to guarantee a par? If you find yourself ever saying something like if I hit a really good one, or I need to carry this X distance, you need to back up and rethink the hole. Also, don't do heroic shots, because you aren't good enough. Play to your miss. If you know you tend to miss right, then aim a little left. If you know you don't feel comfortable hitting a wood off the deck, then use an iron. If you know you hit your 2 iron best at 230, then don't try to hit it farther. If you know you have a trouble at 250, but hit your driver 265 when you hit it good, then club down and play it safe. The next shot will be much easier from the fairway than from the trouble spot.
one of the biggest things that helped me was to not add up my score until after the full round. I was saying in my head, “if I go 2 over in the next 6, I break 80” and things like that. When I didn’t add up the score, I could just focus on good shots. Also, after the first time you do it, it becomes easier and easier. You get the stigma out of your head and eventually it could become a normal thing. Last year in June I shot 88 to break 90 for the first time and 2 days ago I shot even on the back 9 for an eventual 77. It will come, just be patient and don’t have insane expectations
This video is great, havent had the chance to play 18 but went out today and for the first time since i started (6 months) cracked 50 on the front 9 (48) verry happy. Course management and driver setup is imperative. Thank you, ill post what i get sunday when i do 18.
I think one overlooked tip is to play from the correct tees. If you can’t break 100, you should play from most forward tees until you do… then move back one set and repeat
Huggge point. Tees aren't really by gender like I often see it. It's by skill. My dad just tried telling me because he's 62, he should get to play off the seniors. I laughed and said "dad you shoot in the 80s and drive the ball 275yds. No. No you do not" He was both kinda mad but also happy. Just how its supposed to be.
@@Real28 I play from the forwards, and recently played a round with a decent single digit handicapper at Edgewood Tahoe. I knew I was playing from the correct tees because our drives would land about the same distance, and he was playing from the tips.
This. I have no shame marching up to the front tees while I work on breaking 100. Of course, I go with friends, or when the course is quiet enough for me to play completely alone, which almost eliminates the odd glances or the "usually, men play starting from THOSE back there" comments. I keep the ball in play more, work mostly on my hybrids and irons, pull out Dr/3W a few times, hit a handful of fairways, and most of all, I keep play moving. Win for everyone. I wish courses that specify gender or age would re-label those tees (and get ALL tees rated for both men and women for handicap purposes).
Rick, your passion for this game is contagious. These tips as well as many others you have provided over the years have been invaluable in improving my game. Thanks so much!
Rick, I think you missed a couple so Ill fill in: 1. Don't count penalty shots. 2. Take as many tee shots as necessary to get a good start. 3. Give any putt within 10 yards. Easy under a 100!
Hi Rick , have been watching your inspirational videos for a few months now and recently subscribed . I'm 70 years old , retired to Thailand a few years ago . Started playing golf in Dubai in the 90s . Have always been a bit of a hacker . Handicap has varied from start at 24 but lately 28 to 30 and rarely breaking 100 . However got rid of my copy Wilson irons ( engineered in USA , made in China !! ) and got a second hand iron set of Callaway X-14s . I have a Ping G 20 driver which I hit 170-190 yards off tee . Today and after watching many of your great videos , I had one of my best ever rounds on a Par 72 course at 92 , 4 pars ,31 putts on . Thanks for all the help and advice.
Broke 100 for the first time today (shot 93!), two and a half years since I started playing seriously. This was one of the first videos I watched for tips. Had to come back and post after finally hitting my first major milestone! Thanks Rick!
The best advice, which you didn't mention here, is to play from the correct tees. Many terrible golfers have huge egos and think they have to play from the middle or even back tees. The USGA recommends most people who drive the ball about 200 yards, which is average for most men, to play from the forward tees. No they're not womens' tees, they're forward tees. And you're not impressing anyone shooting 125 from the back tees.
I just started to play golf and I have been watching loads of your videos, they are very information and very easy and simple to take and use in my game.
I have only started playing and just bought my first set of clubs last week. This video is great advice. My 1st round of golf every and o shot 112 and my second was 119. I hoping to start improving now that have my own clubs and can start playing regularly.
My goal was to break 40 on our local 9 hole course this year. Ever since I said that goal out loud, I can’t get anywhere close. Need to get out of my head!!!
I totally understand this , there are two holes on the course I play that have taken up room and board in my head, did better on them today by just changing how I approach them .
Rick, you should get some type of award for this video... It's so simple and to the point... I loved the last tip which can easily be applied to every hole... Stand on the tee box and add 1 or 2 to the par number!... My long-time golf partner Gary, figures 5 on every hole is par and consistently is in the high 80's low 90's.
Think I would like to see a 27 handicapper play their shots then Rick suggesting alternative when it goes wrong as their ability to strike a ball would be way different … (IMO)
You should check out Golf Sidekick. Often he’ll advise players to take a safer option first, then drop another in the same place for them to hit the hero shot they wanted to - the hero shot is always a disaster 😂

Love this guy. My favourite UA-cam golf guru. He’s a great player, great communicator and I really admired how he took advice on his self admitted weak grip from Nick Faldo. His being taught by a master also taught me. That’s inspired coaching. Keep it up RS. Ps: I started playing golf when I retired just before the pandemic. I’m a tennis player really. I missed playing in lockdown. But watched a lot of online stuff. I’m now 18 handicap. That is largely down to the Rick. More than anything else he taught me to lose my ego, know and embrace my limitations and play strategically. The poker metaphor applies to golf: it is often better to lose with a winning hand so you can win with a losing hand. Rejecting the clubs a top player would use to play a stroke and going for what is going to give me the most likely best outcome - even if it looks ugly - is a massive lesson from Rick

Hit my best round (102) a couple days ago after watching your videos - Hitting A Driver Straight, How To Hit Perfect Iron Shots, and The Secret Chipping Technique - this video came at the PERFECT time. ...Are you making these specifically for MY golf career?! Haha thanks for the content man you're a delight to watch, the best in the genre.
What do you hit now almost a year later?
im a 100ish player and half of the fun for me is going for those crazy shots that usually don't end up well, but to each their own! great video Rick!
I think Rick's point is that if you didn't go for crazy shots you'd be a 90ish player.
Death or glory!!!!
Typically resulting in death 😂
Granted, it IS arousing to hit a 230y 5w onto the fore-green but alas,, my scorecard would be a sad read :)
Your 8 iron (pitching wedge in this video) low chip and roll from just off the green has saved me countless strokes over the last year.
This cannot be underestimated!
This and the Texas wedge are 2 of the things that I have started doing and they have made a world of difference for me.
I have seriously cut 5 strokes a round from switching to it.
Here is a little tip that Rick has shown in many videos:
Instead of leaving yourself with that really short crappy chip, try to leave yourself on the other side of the green with plenty of area to work the ball.
I go out of bounds while im putting
That means you have no fundamental swing!

With these tips I may finally be able to break 100… on the first 9
With these tips I can finally play the second hole.... 😂
I got my first par ever and I'm 6 months into playing golf. Your videos have helped alot
Congrats plently of more to come
It's those little wins that keep us coming back for more. Finding my first par 3 green off the tee was a big boost for me when I started a few years ago, was well chuffed. 😎
Very well done lad. Thats what golf is all about
Very well done 👏
I’m going to keep sharing this whenever I can. Thanks to you I have went from shooting a 150 to now my lowest score is a 92. I have broke 100 and trying to break 90. And really can’t wait to break into the 70’s. Thank you so much and love all the post you’ve posted.
As a player who regularly shoots mid-high 80s now, these tips are surprisingly applicable to my own game too Rick! Many players can benefit from this, not just the 100-ish golfer! Great video!
I would agree
@@samuelshaw2252 I would not agree
@@subtotheseagull5492 so we should be looking to hit the ball into trouble instead of the middle of the green? We should always take a ton of loft instead of bump and run? We’ll see you on your next week mate!
I think tips are tips know matter what level you play, can always learn something new I suppose.
“As long as you keep the big numbers off your card you should be ok.”
Well, I’m halfway there. I use the pencils supplied by the course, just need to convince them to provide erasers.
Next WITB pack erasers for the score card lol
Lol dumb hahaha
Well, I´ve got a pencil with an eraser in my bag - problem solved.
@@mp-dd7pn I spent hundreds of dollars on golf equipment and lessons to lower my handicap and you sir... have solved it for less than one dollar. I knew I should have bought an unfair way wood.
These tips suggest that I can get t the green before I hit bogey😂😂😂
You and me have a lot in commons 😂
Barstool Trent: "Write that down, write that down!"
Back in HS I once shot a 41 on the front and a 68 on the back, fun stuff.
Way too much math
@@yankeechicken61 Counting is hard.
I knew the first tip would be the "boomp and roon." 😆 It's changed my game for the better for sure.
Thanks Rick, love these types of videos. A lot of your viewers are trying to break 100 and these tips help a lot, especially that last one. I always go driver on the long holes and it usually ends up costing me
Good to see Rick finally trying to get his handicap back down again
My home course is a 9 hole, par 35. We usually play it twice for the 18, par 70, and today I was able to bring my score to an 88, my first time under 90 with help from all of you're videos. Extremely grateful for the time and effort you have put into you're channel. Much Love

I will try this weekend ,been averaging 115 on a par 72 just been playing a year
Here is something Rick has said many times that really works wonders.
@@charlieodom9107 my driver is usually my best club, my irons are where I got off the rails on a crazy train!! LOL!!
@@charlieodom9107 thanks!!!

Pls do one for breaking 80🙏

No. No you do not"
He was both kinda mad but also happy. Just how its supposed to be.
This 💯
This is a huge argument in the foursome I play with. One guy should on the forward tee with me but won’t play the “ladies” tee 😤
Great tips on mindset here Rick. Thank you 👍🏼

2. Take as many tee shots as necessary to get a good start.
3. Give any putt within 10 yards.

This can be great advice for more than trying to break 100. Solid info that can get rid of strokes in my score. Well done, Rick!
I almost always play the forward tees, but also play the Ladies tees when I want a bit of a technical challenge.
I just started to play golf and I have been watching loads of your videos, they are very information and very easy and simple to take and use in my game.

I'm mental jello too. I'll play great on my way to break 80.. notice I'm playing great.. then have like.. 3 blow up holes to close the round out.
I totally understand this , there are two holes on the course I play that have taken up room and board in my head, did better on them today by just changing how I approach them .
Since i started watching Rick Shiels Golf this summer, ive brought my scores from low 100s to late 80s-early 90s. Much appreciated Rick!

The poker metaphor applies to golf: it is often better to lose with a winning hand so you can win with a losing hand.
