I haven't done a full 18 yet, but I play the front 9 at a local course, and consistently get 52-55 (par 36). I've improved around 20 strokes in the last 3 months (I just started) and I would be so happy if I got down to 45. These tips have been a huge help

A tip a friend of mine said for breaking 90 is ‘every hole is a par 5’. It’s more of a mindset tip than a technique/play tip, but it really helped me forgive a 6 or a 7 on a hole if I could secure a 3 or a 4 on others

I suppose any holes you scored better on the back 9 (during practice) can count if you screw up any of those same holes during the "legit" 18.

The bump and run has been most helpful for me. I always used to go for a big flop shot and as a result over shot the green 99.9% of the time. Utilizing the bump and run has shaved about 5-8 strokes off my score so far :) Granted I’m still relatively new to the game of golf, so I still have a lot to learn yet, but I enjoy the hell out of the game

Yup. I’m right about a 88-92 golfer and I can attest to everything this guy said in the video. Spot on. I’d also add, work on your chipping and wedge game 80% of the time. Bombing drivers and long irons and all that are fine but all the scoring and up and downs and getting onto greens in regulation involve wedge shots and touch. Put most your effort there and the rest will fall into place

those sand shots can be a real killer for many golfers. honestly, when the ball isn't jammed up against one of the banks and there's a lot of open green fairway on the hole, i've had extreme success using a fairway wood out of the sand trap and not "wasting" that extra chip shot just to punch it out. maybe not for others but has certainly worked for me, good luck on the course!

I taught myself these tips years ago and lowered my index from 28 to 20 (all from tournament scores, i.e., play by the rules and putt out). 1) My par is 90, bogey golf. I don't worry about making par. If I make a good chip or make a long putt, great, I make par, maybe even a birdie. 2) I usually use a 3 hybrid to get out of jail. Using Rick's technique, I can skim the ball just off the turf 100 to 150 yards and I'm back in the hole. 3) I use the bump and run (the "Scottish chip" as I call it) from 100 yards in whenever there's no hazard in front of me, like a lake or bunker. Takes a lot of practice to gauge how hard to hit it, but I'm usually somewhere on the green putting for par. 4) I practice 30' & 40' putts a lot, just for speed, and I practice 6' in, that's it. All I can say is this has served me well and made the game more fun.

Great video Rick, the point I think people are missing is that this will help golfers who are close to breaking 90 get there. Someone who plays 110 - 120 will need to get to the mid-90s to get the most from this video. Even a high handicapper can use these tips to get their scores down, but if you're always hitting your tee shot into the woods, good luck. Keep 'em coming Rick, love the tips and they have helped my game quite a lot.

Another tip that helped me when I was learning. 5 strokes per hole is 90. If you bogey a par 4, not a problem. Double bogey a par 4 and then bogey a par three still averages 5 per hole. Takes the pressure off if you have a bad hole. Makes you think when you put one in the woods and have to chip out instead of being stupid and trying to be a hero. Only I more stroke for the mistake and you have a chance of making it up on an easier hole. Play smart and it’s only 1 less stroke and you are in the 80’s.

No question about it, Rick’s tips here are fantastic! As he mentions, the crucial part of breaking through a scoring barrier, is to apply more manageable shots. Take out the magical or miracle escape shot, and focus on the easier option.

This is the hardest part. Behind a tree, 170 yards to the green.. the smart play is to punch out to the fairway & pitch to the green.. you still try to go for it. End up hitting the tree now another tough shot & still don’t get it on the green. Regret it every time.

Bump & Run is probably the most important shot for a weekend golfer to learn. I play with my friends and I see them pulling out the sand or pitching wedge just off the green and I try to explain why this is a better option. Most get it but some don't and then send their ball 40 yards over the green.

When I first started playing golf, I’d always try to make a great shot out of trouble and I’d hit a great one 1 out of 10 times. One day, I got paired with an older gentlemen. I hit my shot into the trees and he noticed I’d tried to get on the green and ended up hitting a bad shot and tripled the whole. Then he uttered the words that I have lived by even after 20+ years. “When in trouble, don’t make it double”. That same round, I found myself in the trees again (Harding Park has a lot of them). Walking up to my ball, I kept muttering “when in trouble, don’t make it double”. I got up, chipped it laterally back into the fairway with a 7 iron, hit a really good third and made a decent putt for par.

Instead of trying to advance it as far as I could, which would have been a tough shot, I chipped it out back into the fairway and left myself 225 to the pin, into the wind. Water on the left, I hit a high draw with my 2 iron and landed it on the green, albeit still having a long putt but it was for birdie. I ended up 3 putting it for a bogey which I was happy about consider where I was.

OK Rick, you finally got me to subscribe to your channel. All of those tips you just showed I use and they work. I am 60 and due to 2 bad car accidents in the last 10 years where I have been cleaned up, my back is now pretty bad and I am now 60. Before the accidents, I played of 9 and was pretty reasonable at hitting fairways of the tee. But now, I have lost 50 yards and accuracy is not a good. So Bogies are my friends, pars are a bonus and birdies are just fantastic. But I can still break 90 on a regular basis by playing within myself, keep ego in check and just work with what I have. My short game is what keeps my score down, and my putting is good, rarely 3 putt. Oh, I now play of 16, which is still reasonable and I am happy with it. Cheers from Australia.
