All good stuff! As a 30K player and in a (relative*) island of army list balance I just look at the whole data slate and formations thing with utter horror. File under bubonic plague, Avoid like the. Here's an idea, why not just ditch the whole AV / HP system full stop and go back to 1st edition toughness values, damage points and saving throws for vehicles? But as you say at the very least make dreadnoughts monstrous creatures. *Mechanicum, I know
thanks for the comparisons. I haven't played as much 7th as 4th,3rd, and 2nd.... and that was a while ago... but making a central weapon listing and sticking to it, changing vehicle assault a bit would also help but this video has been inspirational I have to say that thank you
I just want to see the game fixed. People said to me today it's just 'useless complaining" but I like to think that I'm getting across a well-informed point about why crucial things aren't working. I hope that people can take it in, and even if they can't do anything about it, at least they are aware of it.
psychic phase needs to be streamlined definitely. I would rather that instead of rolling for powers you can choose powers based on your psykers mastery level ie ML1 psyker can only take a warp charge 1 power, ML2 psyker can choose either wc1 or wc2 powers etc.
In 3rd and 4th ed you chose your powers and they had points values. You could choose multiple powers but could only cast as many powers as your mastery level.
As a night lords player I don't think doubling hull points would be nice at all. It sounds like you want to fix the first blood rhino hunt issue, why not say that first blood has to be a non transport unit? Psychic phase does confuse me, why would I pay all those points for a model to then randomly roll on a table and hope I get the right power to use? I am not a power gamer but even I can see how silly that idea is. Randomness in these games is already dictated by dice (roll to hit, roll to charge, roll for reserves) we really don't need to add extra random elements (hello Chaos codex) that either swing the balance massively in your favour (Daemon prince) or completely screw you over (Spawn), especially if you are paying for the privilege of having this random table (psychers, chaos boons).
I wrote a few ideas down for JUST an episode on randomness being a bad thing, but it hasn't become a video yet. Yes, double hull-points is extreme, but I just gave it as an example of how to increase survivability. In actuality, granting vehicles saves might be a useful thing as their armour would then negate some weapons. Anyway, my crazy ideas aside I agree with pretty much all you said. Keep up the good work of flaying the flesh off the unjust.
Yeah I understand about the formations issue. However, there are things like the Cadian battlegroup that add rules that aren't significantly advantageous. I think it makes sense to be rewarded for taking specific units, with some special rules and such. Imo it gives the guard army a nice push
I should say using the rules of AoS for 40K did make our games a good lot faster and fun too. But at the very least, formations should cost points, and rules should be free.
Mind you, AoS that's a total homebrew and you have to remember that would be a sweeping change and frankly 40k doesn't need a sweeping change, just some streamlining. No free rules is a big thing in the Horus Heresy books, for every gain, there is a loss.
I disagree with you on buffing vehicle hull points, in my opinion it would be preferable to nerf the graviton special rule to wounding against the targets strength (maybe on 2d6?), simply reducing the range to 18", or increasing the price. I would as a horus heresy player go so far as to say formations have to go, give us detatchments with unique upsides and downsides. Also, remove feel no pain from gargantuan creatures, and revert feel no pain to being useless against weapons that are AP2 or AP1. Random charge ranges are abysmal, and the assault phase in general feels like a clusterfuck, leading to scenarios where one round of shooting from cheap heavy support units does as much damage as prolonged assault with specialized, more expensive units without putting the heavy support unit at risk of retaliation every time it strikes. Oh and make the necron rule fail against AP2 and 1 weapons, make tau vulnerable to blind, make riptide and bigger battlesuits vehicles, raise the price on wraithknights through the roof (Like 550 points for one), and please stop giving marines invulnerable character squads (Chapter master smashfucker with librarius conclave, among many other builds.)
Straying into the realm of problems with specific codexes there at the end, as opposed to the core rulebook, as much as I agree with you, it's a whole other topic. Yeah I think the grav weapon points and functionality is about right tho in 30k, so not sure that nerfing them as opposed to just buffing the tanks is the key.
A bit surprised that you didn't mention the assault phase, there are some really good units there, sure but they are generally super death stars. It would be fun to be able to assault with some regular CSM or some tyranid warriors, maybe a d6+6'' charge would do the trick? Since you can't run and charge any more, this would put you at the same speed as 4th edition Fleet units :)
Well, let's face it, assault and randomness is a major problem. As I've said to others, I feel that some of these problems (randomness in general) deserve their own video as they really affect specific codexes over others. I've focussed more on the problem there, but that video is still in the planning stages. In general I try to keep the videos (fix it and broke the fans) specific to one army or one main topic, otherwise I can go too far astray, and people who want to link to the videos or talk about a specific idea don't know where to go.
The Outer Circle Looking forward to your video on the assault phase and randomness :) always like hearing your thoughts on these matters :) keep up the good work!
Polly I try to be unbiased and give factual reasons for why something is good/bad, but it can be really hard. I have an Age of Sigmar video in progress and it's been a tough one to get just right, as I often write down my thoughts on a piece of paper and then just hit 'record'. I end up on tangents and have to go back and start over haha
The Outer Circle I would love to do this sort of thing if it weren't for that exact problem xD I would just end up talking about random shit after like five minutes. After talking for a while with a GW employee I actually got a bit interested in AoS, but I do miss the blocks :'(
This may not be a popular opinion, but I would be interested to see if they could learn anything from Flames of War in terms of a flexible force organisation chart to replace Formations & Detachments. The main problem with Formations & Detachments is that they encourage players to fork out a bunch of money that you need to get the necessary models, which provide additional special rules giving you an unfair advantage over your opponent who hasn't done the same.
40k since 3rd ed's inception is essentially the same game. Looking to other systems and slowly implementing new ideas would be a solid choice IMO. And yes, Formations right now are a pay to play, pay to win thing.
Hey man, I agree with alot of what your saying. What gets me the most is that when a new rule book comes out, in order for me to get it i have to spend $100+ to get the rule book and everything that GW want to include in that package eg. a showcase book on minis and other books I have no interest in spending my hard earned money on. I wsh GW could have just the new rule book come out to purchase, that it. I rather pay $140 dollars on new miniatures then 1 book out of three.
I agree with that the psychic phase needs changing it adds a lot more time on top of the game, rolling for powers and it having its own phase. you should pay for the powers and get the ones you want and psychic powers should be used in the shooting phase like the old edition. Also anyone who tries that with a super heavy deserves a throat punch
By all mean respect, your doing a great job on our path to boycotting games workshops overpriced models. I will not buy any more models when I'm not playing.
MAKE TYRANIDS GREAT AGAIN

Without a reasoned stance. How can anybody know another vantage point.

Agreed. I personally think all new codexes should be released as free PDFs online, with hardcover options available for collectors.

Imagine a Typhon Siege Tank with a 360 degree arc on the FUCK YOU gun....
But would that not be CLEARLY against the rules? It says in the description that it is a HULL-MOUNTED weapon.
But it's modelled otherwise?
I agree with the changes for 40k I hope the game becomes fun and easy for chaos space marines.
I think you're dreaming. Go play some 30k ;)
By all mean respect, your doing a great job on our path to boycotting games workshops overpriced models. I will not buy any more models when I'm not playing.
I wish instead we got the monster they’d 8th
I think your videos are good but your speech is barely audible.
