- We look at another batch of one-hit wonders that sucked (or didn't), including Vanilla Ice ("Ice Ice Baby"), James Blunt ("You're Beautiful), American Hifi ("Flavor Of The Weak"), Bowling For Soup ("1985"), Shaggy "It Wasn't Me" and Kriss Kross ("Jump"). Did these one-hit wonders suck??

You should do another video with bands like
Ra - do you call my name
Revis - caught in the rain
Crossfade - cold
Clutch - electric worry
Kings of Leon - sex on fire
The Mooney Suzuki - alive & amplified
The heavy - how do you like me now
The gaslight anthem - 45
My darkest days - pornstar dancing
Cavo - champagne
James Blunt wasnt really a one hit wonder, his next few albums did well in the charts internationally, including number 1 in UK and but he never replicated the success of his first album and single featured here
@@doomztay Kings of Leon is a bad example they were already a big band (outside the US) and playing at major festivals before Sex on Fire. Use Somebody was another major hit from the same album. They continued to be one of the biggest bands in the world since then
@@KC-oz1yc most ppl only know sex on fire and use somebody though. Maybe they're just not as huge with other songs in the US.
@@doomztay But in the years since then they've had multiple number 1 or high charting albums in the US and internationally, a number of Grammy nominations and other awards. You dont archive all this by being a 1 hit wonder.
Yeah single wise it seems Iike they didn't do anything as major but it's not about all about hit singles, album sales matter too, and a few other criteria that show your still relavant in music.
“The sole is the nipple of the foot”
I’ve been awake exactly 32 minutes and I’ve decided that’s enough for today. Thanks.
i never took 1985 as incel. the lyrics seemed like a woman who was a cool kid back in 1985. but time has moved on shes now a mom, her kids dont think shes cool. but she still lives her life like its still 1985
That's how I took it. Like she felt like she lost her way a little but still loved to rock
I agree. it's mostly told from the woman's perspective
Came here to say the same thing. It’s written about a former cool chick who has a boring life now and always wishes she could go back to 1985. The song isn’t about them not getting the girl at all. Otherwise great video though. I love this series.
Can confirm, I was born in 85 and my mom watches this video and waxes nostalgia about the good days. Extra points because she was a hairdresser and I had a mullet because of her until I was 8 lol
Yea its a song about this girl
Not the narrator
James Blunt is genuinely hilarious, his twitter trolling is god tier!
Also apparently ‘You’re beautiful’ is about him seeing a pretty woman whilst he was high as balls on mdma riding the London Underground 😂
Fun fact about James Blunt. He practically prevented WW3 when he refused to attack Russian soldiers at the Pristina Airfield in 1999.
Delayed it, perhaps...
James Blunt is a living legend and doesn’t take himself too seriously he gets a thumbs up from me 👍🏻
You cornballs throw around terms like " living legend" around too liberally. James Blunt isn't a legend. Nobody gives a shit about him.
If you haven't seen his appearances as a guest on Top Gear it's definitely worth looking up. The guy is hilarious.
@@RichardtheLionHeart645 I have as a matter of fact 😂
@@RichardtheLionHeart645 doesn't make him a living legend
His twitter feed is amazingly hilarious. Its basically watching him execute people verbally when they try to mock him. Then he mocks himself far more than anyone else could.
I wouldn't exactly call Bowling For Soup a one-hit wonder; they also have High School Never Ends, Punk Rock 101, Girl All The Bad Guys Want, all arguably as well-known as 1985
Phineas and Ferb as well
@@andrewmalone182 Can't believe I forgot that one.
The general criteria for a "hit" in the US is to make it on the Bilboard Top 40. 1985 is the only one that did.....
I also disagree with the incel take on the song. I always viewed it as they wrote a song about a woman who was having a mid life crisis type of thing and missed how things were in the eighties.
@@brettfolkerth7612 if thats the case then bands like blink 182, my chemical romance n pretty much every pop punk band other then like 2 bands would be 1 hit wonders
James Blunt literally told people to stop playing that song at weddings because he wrote it from the perspective of a stalker. One of the most misunderstood songs of all time.
Brother I’ve witnessed a couple first dancing to “every breath you take” by the police. Some people don’t listen hard enough
@@evanmaunders5688 or, even worse, they don’t care.
No, that would be pumped up kicks. Nobody listens to the lyrics.
I was at a wedding a year ago and they walked out of the church to Hey Ya! by Outkast.
If you’ve never read the lyrics, please do. It’s about a dead marriage and divorce. Lol
@@evanmaunders5688 My fiance went to a wedding where the groom's last name was Jones and the first dance was, "Me and Mrs. Jones."
Please do a full vanilla ice video! His legacy is fascinating and his reality tv era has a lot of interesting stuff to get into as well.
You're Beautiful is actually about when Blunt was high af on drugs after he got out of the military. He said this in an interview he just saw this guy and his gf and kind of followed them. Drugs are bad mmkay. This dude is awesome and hilarious. Look up his Twitter he roasts himself, shits on his own music. and roasts people who hate him lol. But yeah this song was about him being all strung out on drugs and just following this couple all depressed. Not really a fan of his music but that dude is a legend! He's very self aware and knows that a lot of people just don't like him.
7:37 as someone who works in photography industry and regularly do shoots at weddings, I can confirm that the James Blunt song is played at almost every white people wedding I've worked at. :P
Man, I can't help but cringe eeeek
Yikes. People aren't that original, are they?
What a horrible reality. 🤢🤮
Kriss Kris’s would’ve absolutely slayed in the tiktok era. Ahead of their time
He has a guitar pick so he can play wonderwall 😂💀… I’m dead lol
The MBA is polished sure but it’s here where Finn shines so bright. Listening to this guy jamming about vanilla ice is pure UA-cam gold! Awesome job Finn!
“If you see bare soles, that’s even better.” James is baring his *soul*, so to speak
I think 1985 is about a woman going through a midlife crisis, longing for the 80's, don't think it's an incel thing. Fuck! Never thought I'd be standing up for Bowling for Soup, I've also changed 😞
It’s actually a cover, however, the lyrics were updated in their version.
Lol literally ONLY Finn would come up with that interpretation of it. Nowhere in the lyrics does it express anything remotely close to incel stuff. As you said it’s plain as day that it’s just about a middle aged woman that misses the days of her youth and imagines what could have been.
Surely some of these can't be considered "one hit wonders" unless they were just successful in the UK but not the USA.
James Blunt also had Goodbye My Lover (I assume this was a hit in America too because of the scene in The Office), High, and Bonfire Heart.
It's weird to think he's probably killed people. Anyway for all the people he has annoyed with You're Beautiful (I maintain that it's a great pop song) he earned their fandom with his Twitter account. Follow him. He's hilarious.
Bowling For Soup had a fair few hits in the UK, I wouldn't even say 1985 was the biggest here: Girl all the Bad Guys Want was certainly bigger here. Then there was: The Bitch Song, Emily, Punk Rock 101, Almost, High School Never Ends all got decent air play.
In the UK Shaggy also had a fair few hits although It Wasn't Me and Mr Boombastic were probably his biggest. Oh Carolina, In the Summertime, Angel, Luv Me, Luv Me and Me Julie; were all popular.
James Blunt also has '1973'
Shaggy definitely isn’t a one hit wonder. Other than Boombastic, he also had Angel which was and still is really popular, among others as well as being featured in lots of stuff. He’s had a really successful career outside of It Wasn’t Me
Angel and It Wasn't Me was top 1 for an entire year in my city.
Today’s episode: One-hit wonders who had multiple hit songs! 🎉🎆🎇
Yeah he’s had a ton of hits…”Oh Carolina” actually made the Alternative/Modern Rock chart in 1993, somehow.
Shaggy is awesome. Just ask the 5000+ guys that try to sound like him.
I watched James Blunt live once when he was opening for Elton John and honestly the guy is really good. He has some really good songs like Same Mistake and 1973.
This commentary has got me in stitches! The James Blunt Intel stealth “I’ll just sit here watching you while you sleep” is all too creepy and relatable
James Blunt's real surname is Blount. He dropped the O to became Jay & Silent Bob's favourite rapper!!
The symbolism of the James blunt video is that he's shedding his layers as he opens up about his feelings for her. And the jumping the cliff is him shooting his shot and barring his naked soul.
The commentary on how Chad vanilla Ice Is, had me absolutely crying 🤣
nobody:
finn: bowling for soup is a one hit wonder
They had 1 song that hit 24 you fool
Finn fanboying over Vanilla Ice is one of the best things I’ve witnessed today lmao
Perfectly timed. Just as you introduced the song "Right Now" by SR-71, UA-cam played an ad for Wright State University: "Right Here. Right Now. Wright State."
Yes! My very first two cassette tapes (at age 12) were Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer 😂😂
Two big earworms 😊
When fin says " I was 7 in 1985" then there's me a 24 year old who wasn't even a twinkle in my dad's sack lmao
"demoted for being too funky" killed me 😂 take a thumbs up Finn
I have a very specific memory of listening to that Flavor of the week song and trying code red for the first time, which was a big deal because it was the first flavored mt dew. I was like 8 at the time. A few weeks ago I was drunk and wanted to see if that actually lined up and code red came out within like 2 months of that song coming out.
A vanilla ice video would be fire as long as you bring up the turtle rap 🐢
Great video 👍 makes me want a whole video looking at Vanilla Ice as Finn killed me on that part 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Go ninja go ninja go
I don't care who you were, when V-Ice dropped Ice Ice Baby in the 90's, you were about it. That song slapped hard. I've seen him live probably 4 or 5 times both has hip hop and nu-metal and he puts on a fantastic show.
“James Blunt wrote ‘You’re Beautiful’ about Vanilla Ice.”
😂 🤣 😂 my sides!
As much as I disagree on the meaning of "1985", he's absolutely right about one thing: No one will ever be as cool as Vanilla Ice.
Would love to see an interview with any of these artists! Specifically Jaret of BFS and Ice.
I don't think calling BFS one hit wonder is quite fair. They had a hit with "Girl All the Bad Guys Want" before this and had a few other successful songs as well. Plus the Phineas and Ferb Theme song! 🤣
They are still grinding today.
Saw them in concert a few years ago. They put on a great show.
@@brianmckennamusic9434, no doubt! I saw them (for the 2nd time) with RBF in 2019 and it was a great time. They are a lot of fun to watch. I wouldve preferred to be on the Mest leg of that tour, but Nerf Herder wasn't bad.
Funny enough, the first time I saw BFS was with American Hi-Fi. 🤣
one song hit 24 on the charts
"Bowling For Soup is a one hit wonder"
There's Finn's one controversial take per video.
"1985 has incel undertones"
Nevermind.
It's a female mid life crisis song and was ahead of it's time because mostly men got mid life crisis songs at the time.
I interpreted BFS in the video as a representation of her inner demons. BFS doesn't interact with the main characters at all but instead represents the thoughts manifesting. Besides she can't be pining for 2000s punk and 1985 at the same time lol.
Speaking of strange wedding songs… I know someone whose first dance song was “Lips of an Angel”
I saw a bride and groom dance to that stupid "sitting at a bar" song by Rehab once.
@@dustywaynemusic6297 what on earth 😭
I said this on another comment but my fiance once went to a wedding where the first dance was, "Me and Mrs. Jones."
The very first rap cassettes I ever owned, I got for my 12th birthday in 1992. They were "To the Extreme" and "Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em". Still know every track on both sides!
90s Vanilla Ice is just Gigachad without the beard
Before *Karen* came to be, the side-swept blond hair immediately brought to mind Kate Gosselin
The line "Don't try to compare us to another bad little fad" in "Jump" is a diss to the group ABC.
Also popular at the same time.
1985 is just about nostalgia. It's not about their gender dude. It applies to anyone living in the past, why does is have to be interpreted as a sexist thing? It's really not, not everything is sexist Finn.
Coz Finn is a doofus
I hate to say it, but it's like he's slowly becoming the complete opposite of the right wing reactionaries like TheQuartering or SaltyCracker. I always love the analysis, Finn has truly is some of the best analyses on the internet, but this weird obsession of calling everything incel is becoming predictable. And it's weird because he doesn't do it for anything else. He rarely talks about race/lgbt (He's yet to acknowledge Noahfinnce despite him being a rising star), etc. but every single video at this point will have something about misogyny.
@@SconnerStudios being the opposite of The Quartering is a good thing though
I relistened to the whole song to make sure I wasn’t missing something. His take is way off. It’s just a fun song about someone a bit stuck in their past.
Finn’s trying to “trigger” the viewers who aren’t quite so socially adept.
I love Vanilla Ice's nu-metal era. Hard To Swallow is an underrated masterpiece, in my opinion.
James Blunt would agree with you Finn.
He's said he hates that people think it's a love song, when it's very clearly about a drug addict stalking a girl on the train.
especially when the lyrics don't go ”i was flying high" in this censored version other than ”fucking high" in it's original version
At 45, I still unironically love Vanilla Ice. Waiting for that video with baited breath.
The see-through drumkit in Flavor Of The Weak reminded me of those translucent Gameboys, where you could see all the electronic bits inside it.
American Hi-Fi are just reading through the Descendents playbook
M'ladycore
I saw Lit and American Hi-Fi in concert when I was in undergrad. Great show from both bands. We used to drive to Philly to see New Found Glory and eat cheese steaks! Thanks for bringing back the memories.
I want that "oh nu metal" as a notification sound, every time u upload a new video.
Man I unironically loved bowling for soup when I was 12-13. They had a few great songs and albums in the 2000s
14:43 little fun fact for you Finn, the vocalist for Bowling For Soup actually sings on the main them for Sonic Unleashed called Endless Possibility
Early 90s rappers all did that walk like they had to pee while they were rapping
You should do a vídeo about old videos futuristic devices!
Shaggy isn't a one-hit or even two-hit wonder. In addition to "It Wasn't Me" and "Boombastic", he also had "Angel".
James Blunt also had a second hit - "Goodbye My Lover".
I was too young to know the 1985 references, BUT I grew up watching VH1 documentaries, so all the references hit.
Am i the only one that thinks the main bassline of ice ice baby is much doper than the queen sample?
We aren't allowed to admit that publicly
My mom caught me blasting 'Flavor of the Weak' when I was like 9 or 10 and she about shit when it started saying, 'too stoned' lol
American Hi Fi's best song is "The Art of Losing", even though it's a bit of a Ramones ripoff. It was actually featured in American Pie 3 and Malcolm in the Middle.
James Blunt is actually a pretty cool guy, a friend of mine worked in a large local venue doing the lighting and so he had backstage access to pretty much any act that came in. It was generally mid tier pop acts and 80s classics as it was a small shitty city but when we'd go out drinking on a saturday night we'd swing by and generally make a nuisance of ourselves trying to talk to all these various acts. We met James Blunt backstage in the kitchen area and he seemed really cool, he had great banter and was fully aware of how sick of him a lot of people were because it was basically impossible to escape him on TVradio, he even gave me a signed CD for my mum because she was in his key demographic. Other notable people we met were Lionel Richie who was super nice, Madness were pretty cool and we shared a joint with someone from UB40
Great comment...I always imagined Lionel would be cool as hell.
My first ever concert was matchbox twenty, American hi-fi was hanging outside the show handing out cassettes with flavor of the week. Low key wish I still had that.
Always liked Rob Thomas. He is his generation's Steve Perry.
Even as a kid hearing this song I remember thinking, "she caught him on camera and he's STILL denying it???"
If you can find a clip of James Blunts interview from Andrew Dentons “Enough Rope” you will think Blunt is the coolest bloke in the world. Speaks of his time as a Captain in the NATO army and some pretty full on stuff, but then at other times he’s bloody hilarious! Denton asks him about his song “Goodbye my Lover” and asks if it was about anyone in particular. He says yes, and Denton asks if he got her back. He replies in a perfectly delivered, “No…..but I had plenty of other takers after all the royalties on that song came in”! Or something to that effect. Hard to convey how good the response was, but the crowd was in stitches
I don’t care what anybody says, that kriss kross song is badass 🔥🔥🔥 two little kids rapping about how authentic and old school they are is still funny thirty years after I first heard it. Also my first ever concert was Michael Jackson at Wembley arena and kriss kross were supporting and that was badass as well 🔥🔥🔥
Dude seeing Michael Jackson is pretty incredible, how was that? I was like 10 when he died and it still destroyed me, dude was the modern Elvis
I notch my eyebrows. But I didn't get it from these cats. 🤣 Hopsin gets the credit for this one.
@4:50 lmao. You r cold my friend
they aren’t in the video but ever since i saw mic the snare’s video on chumbawamba i’ve become obsessed with them. they’re one of the most interesting bands i’ve ever seen and a lot their material outside of their one hit is genuinely great stuff.
I was quite surprised to learn they were originally an anarcho punk band. Mind blowing
Chumbawumba are awesome! I watched Todd in the shadows’ video on them and their story is super interesting.
Suddenly started hearing Flavor of the Week on the radio in the last couple months and I'm totally here for it
For every video I take a shot whenever Finn says incel, cuck, beta, and Chad. Not sure my liver can take anymore.
Shaggy is that weird kind of one-hit-wonder where he actually has multiple #1 hits.
Kinda like Rick Astley.
James Blunt makes me want to go change up my top 8 on MySpace.
Tom will always be my no 1
This comment wins.
If it wasn't for Vanilla Ice we wouldn't have Eminem.
Right Now, nor 1985 were written by SR-71, they got credit for arrangments, the producer Butch Walker wrote their songs, and Bowling For Soups, along with producing, and playing on the records.
Bowling for Soup also had “Girl All The Bad Guys Want” which has mad incel energy too.
HER NAME IS NONA SHE'S A ROCKER WITH A NOSE RING
That song is the opposite of incel energy or is at least mocking incel energy and having some self-deprecating humour, that song is incredibly self-aware
Best Easter egg in the 1985 video, is the wife is Tawny Kitaen from the Whitesnake videos.
Great video, but to be fair to Bowling For Soup, 1985 isn't at all about the singer being bitter with the woman and wanting her to be with him. It's about the woman being bitter with how her own life turned out and just looking back to the 80s when she was having fun and had a different idea of her own future. It's just from her perspective, not the singer. Kinda unfair to lump it in with the other incel songs.
The others, yeah, definite incel vibes even though they're good songs lol
Yup, BFS had a few s tier albums in the 00’s in my books. Drunk Enough to Dance has songs like Emily, Life After Lisa and Surf Colorado that are low key pop punk bangers. They were far from a one Hit Wonder as well with Girls All the Bad Guys Want as an obvious example (Which came out before “1985”) and Punk Rock 101.
I love all of Finn’s videos and will continue to subscribe but objectivity should reign supreme to avoid personal biases tainting the message.
@Taylor Hewitt
Wasn't "High School Never Ends" a hit from them as well?
@@cultreader9751 Yep, it’s almost a spiritual successor to 1985. Do yourself a favour and listen to Drunk Enough, A Hangover and Burrito all the way through. The production from Butch Walker is top notch. Jaret has incredible songwriting chops as well with melodic refrains like the bridge on “I’m Gay”. While I’m gushing about this band I’ll also throw in tracks like Ohio, Trucker Hat, Val Kilmer, Epiphany and Shut-up and Smile that are infectious as hell.
@@taylorhewitt7025 Totally agree. A Hangover You Don't Deserve is my favorite BFS album. I played that album non stop for a solid year when it came out and still love it today. Every song on it is a banger.
As a kid born in '95, my first intro to Shaggy was off the Scooby Doo Soundtrack. Shaggy, Where Are You? Is a banger and a half. And Keep'n It Real from the Holes Soundtrack 🤣
the thing with vanilla ice, sampling music without paying royalties was very common in tbe early years if rap. just vanilla ice was the first real mainstream rap song to feature samples and that's what got them so much heat for it.
I think bowling for soup where bigger here in the UK then they where in the US. All us skaters and pop punk fans loved bfs and knew most of their songs. I didn't realise they weren't as big as I thought untill recent years. That aside they're also awesome dudes they have the time.of day for their fans on and offline.
Maybe but they were pretty huge in the states. No where near one hit wonders 😕
Unless somebody has come out and said so specifically, I don’t think 1985 is an incel song. I think the message it’s trying to tell is one of a women who is bitter she’s not cool anymore like she was in the 80s. She wants to bring back the music she loved and the culture she was a member of.
The funny thing about American Hi-Fi - singer/songwriter Stacy Jones had previously played drums in a couple of female-fronted bands, Letters to Cleo and Veruca Salt. Funny he'd write a cringey "nice guy" song after that.
When I went to the gathering of the juggalos for my first time in 2012, the first thing that happened as I walked through the gates vanilla ice drove by on a golf cart offering free whippits lol
Flavour of the weak still holds up!!
No song with such incel-y lyrics can hold up.. simps like that are just too cringy
Shaggy also had “Angel” which slapped hard at every damn school dance.
Should do bands like

Clutch - electric worry
Kings of Leon - sex on fire
The Mooney Suzuki - alive & amplified
The heavy - how do you like me now
The gaslight anthem - 45
My darkest days - pornstar dancing

Kings Of Leon aren't a one hit wonder...

My favorite one hit wonders are "Sex and Candy" Marcy's Playground, and "Flagpole Sitta" Harvey Danger.
Better than Ezra's another one that fits along those lines
"He gonna knock Kris Kross out the box because he gonna be upside down!" - Ice Cold, Fear of a Black Hat
Like 5 years ago Vanilla Ice played at our brand new outdoor mall and somehow my 8 year old daughter wound up on stage with him throwing water to the crowd like a hype man
Looks like James Blunt is suffering from hypothermia.
I was almost in the American hi-fi video. I was hit up via email because I had long hair pictures on my website, but when they asked for a current picture I never heard back. I had just cut my hair lol. When I saw the video I was insulted because I was in my purge my metal past and try to be a hip kroq rockstar phase at the time, and they had me lumped in with the dated metalhead stereotype when at the time I was trying to be "alternative" or some form of industrial pop alt metal (now just lumped into nu metal classification). Not my best era of life, but at least I admitted to myself I was trying to be a sellout because I actually liked what was selling at the time.
Just started watching the one hit wonders videos and look a brand new one. yay!
I did the Kriss Kross thing once to school as part of a dare... 😅 And the James Blunt song is strangely enough a popular funeral song...
We had a Kriss Kross day at school for school spirit week.
I’m a big fan… can’t wait for the Vanilla Ice video!! Had no idea about the metal album either.
I was in elementary school when that Criss Cross song came out, I can confirm a lot of kids wore their clothes backwards.
It was wiggity wiggity whack lol
The Soul is the Nipple of the Foot. THAT needs to be a t-shirt.
Vanilla Ice was cool AF. I was 10 years old at the time and it was perfect in my ears.
And if you had a problem, he'd solve it
I was 12 and it was just such a moment for sure. I’d sit there with all my slap bracelets on rewinding the song I recorded off the radio over and over trying to figure out all the lyrics.
Your only move here- in this situation- is to walk away, that's it! 🤣
