There was no point in continuing the first save knowing you'd missed the carnivore achievement. You already said there are only a few that you have no wiggle room with. And you tried enough times to try to get there.
I like the care packages being on. I also really appreciate your honesty with us!
Don't forget to make the research lab, Echo!
Sea food contributes to carnivore 100%. Watched Extra Hard by Francis John - he had Paku's in his playthrough.
Thank you for the info!
Don't forget to put doors around the printer pod with you research stations and move the wheel to make that a lab. The research speed bonus from the lab is more than the light
I keep forgetting to do this :)
Thanks for the transparency. I'm actuially excited for a restart, especially when you said we'd get to see how "sweaty" you can get haha
Same, I want to see what echo can do when he turns the bridges to go the right way first try xD
lol. I'd still put my money on flipped bridges.
@@EchoRidgeGaming xD, same tbh. Love the videos none the less
I think the compare and contrast was super valuable. Really shows how hard carnivore is if you don't have a solid game plan. I can confirm fish counts (but omelets don't).
Thank you for the info and the comment!
honestly, i dont care if you restart and stuff, i simply like your videos and seeing the bases evolve, and the one before the restart didnt really get to evolve so i honestly dont mind. love ur videos !
edit : found a garbage thing on the right at 8:23 !
Me to i saw it to
Nice job finding the dumpster fire :)
same i just saw that
I am 100% for the restart, seeing the sweat is what makes this "All Achivements" run even more interresting :3
Im actually very happy you restarted ! I was not expecting a challenge called "Max Difficulty" to be achive first try, would not be an actual challenge then. Try and error are part of it and if you need to restart later in the run, don't fell guilty about it ! Since it's part of the experience.
Not to add up that for the people in your community who are doing the challenge side by side with you, it's reasuring for them to see you're struggling too. Some might fail and it's nice for them to know that it's not because they are just.. bad, but that it's part of the challenge !
Great points.
Restart is cool. Thanks for being awesome. Love your entertainment. Keep it going! :D
Thank YOU for being awesome. I appreciate the comment.
Very cool! It really goes to show just how much of a difference try-harding makes in the first several cycles.
I came here from the comments on the discord, and it's way better than what I thought.
Technically this isn't a "restart", you failed try 1, and now are on the 2nd run. You went aaaaalll the way to cycle 100 to see if you could make it, and I assume you recorded and all that, and that just shows your dedication.
This wasn't a "oops, too hard, let's make it easier", you did a full run, failed, and now are trying again, and that's PERFECT!
Let's gooooo! Best of luck for this try!
Great call on the reset, I'm really excited to see how this run goes!
Good for you - I guess we were right to be nervous! 😂 I think it’s better to restart because if you’re aiming to get all the achievements, it would break the series a little bit knowing you couldn’t do it, and thence also affect your motivation to record it. Thanks for the comparisons too :)
Thanks Gryphon.
I've been obsessed with the idea of the max difficulty achievement run recently. Exactly the parameters you used. And I believe I have an optimal starting strategy. And I'm talking excl. care packages.
Three main concepts:
-Poor man's "SPOM": A 2x4 room, can be entirely enclosed as no dupe needs to go in there once built. A gas pump at the top and an electrolyzer at the bottom. A pipe from the pump leading to a gas filter (hydrogen). Connected to a jumbo battery and a manual generator. The tech can be researched in a few cycles and build it in double time as you go. Though not completely self-powered, once the battery is charged it will happily churn away for a cycle or two. Zero automation needed. You can include the water pump on the circuit and even a closed Carbon Skimmer + Water Sieve loop to handle CO2 without degrading performance substantially. You will have all the oxygen you need from a very early point. The heat generated is not sufficient to be a problem in a run like this. Especially if you can place it close to anything even slightly cool. Though I have had it running even in one of the warmish saltwater biomes on the max difficulty world. You can leave the real SPOM until after Carnivore and use the time saved for a nice power solution for the incubators. Once you have locavore you can easily grow enough food for the 6-8 or so dupes you need to easily get carnivore.
-Off world research base: The moment you have one of the configurations above on the main world, you teleport your builder to the 2nd world to gather up all the water there and build another poor man's "SPOM" there. 1st thing! Then over another cycle or two, build a lab room, kitchen area with conveniently located pitcher pump, and the basics of what 3 dupes will need to sleep and poo. And of course the Mini-Pod. A basic base. You can then move your builder back, and as soon as the teleporter offworld has recharged you can send your researcher there and start printing a builder/operator and a cook to round out the crew there. Cooking mush bars, and if you can get it efficient enough, mush fry is perfectly fine for this base.
-The third concept is simply the nature reserve. Especially for the main base you can literally build it anyhow/where you want, and eventually the roaming pips will plant it. I've found that it's priceless to incorporate a space for it into your base on the max difficulty world, practically at the same time as building barracks, toilet, etc. Largely negates the max difficulty morale problem. Too easy to not do it. The off world base is usually simpler to a remarkable degree. So you should be able to incorporate a cheeky nature reserve into it without much ado.
All in all oxygen is hardly an issue. Morale is hardly an issue. You have 3 dupes also eating for locavore which once you have it makes even food a non-issue. Not having to host the researcher at you main base frees up resources there. Meaning you can have something like a dupe that just cleans out dirt from the ranches so you don't continuously get ever more sage hatch eggs from the hatches chowing down on loose dirt. Oh and finding something like a hydrogen vent on the 2nd world is not out of the question. And with a researcher that can go to and fro activating the resource teleporters to send H2 there is more than doable. You can of course also send liquids like any extra water you might find. My 2nd world is mostly low on dirt, but the max difficulty world has too much of it.
And oh yeah... You can do the incubators on manual switches without much trouble until you have the cycle sensor tech.
It's max difficulty - EZ mode.
PS: Don't really know how I missed that they don't only eat food, but also dirt. So sage hatches are obviously useful. If only you knew how many times I've cheesed the egg laying process early game because I thought I couldn't feed sage hatches -_- I've been largely going for mostly stone hatches on sedimentary rock as a consequence. Egads.
Care packages on was definitely the smart move. I don't know if it's possible in Spaced Out, but in the base game I've failed a 100% run before because my asteroid had no shine bugs. Failed another because it had no slicksters. Care packages would have fixed them.
Break glass in case of emergency :)
Good morning Echo! Don't worry about the restart. Remember your viewers are here because we enjoy how YOU play the game. If you're not enjoying it, neither are we. I am still very excited about the achievement run so keep up the great work!
Thanks AngryForest.
This is an "Achievement run", not a "All achievements except the one we couldn't get". The reset was a good choice.
lol. Very true.
I sincerely appreciate your efforts to make those full achievement run, even if you need to restart all the progress
Since that restart happened in the early stage of the serie I really don't see any problem. btw I love your videos, keep the good work :3
Thank you!
In my experience resets are always common on hardcore challenge runs anyway. Fine to admit the reset after playing out the save to see if you can save the run or not. Excited to see how second attempt plays out
Mad respect for sticking with the seed through the restart, even knowing ahead of time the asteroid is pretty close to doomed lol. Rooting for you!
Thank you!
Restart makes perfect sense in this case, and it was so close to the beginning that I wouldn't give it a second thought... Also, YAY, care packages!!
Fast forward on hard mode means, bum bum bum buumm, certain death. (< must be read in the voice of the door guards from The Labyrinth, lol) - We'll all understand completely if for this series, you pause during the wrap up monologue and credits. XD
Best of wishes!!
I think it's only the brave sort of people who recognize when they have made a mistake and can admit defeat. Restarting in this situation is admirable if anything. I do feel like adding care packages harms the spirit of things a little though.
Thank you for the feedback and comment.
I just found you a couple days ago and you're the only UA-camr that plays this in a way thats fun to watch. And I learn more about the game otw ☺️ I love it
Was super excited to see a long series. ... Two episodes in already changing it. Honestly kills it for me.
i love the small echos (or dumpster fires) you manage to sneak into the map
I appreciate you going through the restart in so much detail. I had to restart dozens of times when learning to play on the extra hard difficulty, so your thought process was very relatable.
This series inspired me to do an all achievement run as well, but not on the hardest difficulty. The goal of burning 400k calories of meat was extremely hard to hit within the first 100 cycles, mostly because I didn't realize it was 400k and not 100k until cycle 60, but I still made it. Thank you for your great videos
Thank you Nightbot and congrats!
Glad you started with the ranching skill it’s a must for the map your playing
Clutch I am hoping.
Glad you did the restart rather than continue a series you knew was likely to fail. For as much as we love chaos we like to see you succeed.
8:56 Ahhhhh Just like his tea cup, gotta turn off the germ decontamination :) Thanks Echo for the video!
lol
I want to commend you on restarting. It shows maturity and commitment. It's just a game: do what you can, but have fun doing it!
Very valuable lesson about Moving on and start a new game.
Yay, finally a new video of this challenge :D
Don't mind restarts at all, but aww, care packages may throw cheese ;
Will still be trying not to use them.
To increase duplicant labor - production. You can give them the 4 or 5 downtime slots to get them the extra morale. In order to not lose production to their downtime, just simply seal off the printing pod by either locking the doors, restricting access or making them one way doors that do not lead to the printing pod. If the printing pod is accessible, they will gather around it during their downtime. If they have no access to it or to any recreational building / room, then they'll randomly due choirs that are already in their task list even during their down time without losing the gained morale bonus.
Hey echo Ive done this playthrough a lot of times. Your math was right, however, i found an answer to your problem. Because of this, I was able to ranch my first hatch on cycle 21, maintain 18 hatches (i divided them into 3 ranches, 6 each so no cramping with eggs) and just used 3 incubators. The key here is to "squeeze incubate". Once the rancher lullabies the egg in the incubator, you quickly switch them with another egg and so on. That means i can lullabie as many eggs as i can in just a cycle no need to wait for one egg to hatch before moving to another one.
Trust me, being crazy with the achievement run, this is one of the first things Ive refined. So Ive done 4 playthroughs and the Carnivore achievement was just a walk in the park.
restarting is fine! especially since that was the only really time sensitive achievement, it works out in the end
Thank you.
I don't mind the restart at all, I did want to add that the dupes only really need 2 sleep blocks as long as they make it to bed on time, once the colony gets too big I change it back to 3
I need to change this.
Restart is imo the way to go! Nothing wrong with admitting defeat. Tho, i'd prefer if you kept care package off. But i guess its prob a bit more fun gameplay wise with them on and at the end of the day i just hope you're having a good time man!
Thank you for the feedback and comment!
The restart is fine. You lost one, and you owned it. You called it and started again. I’m here for it.
Thank you.
Doesn't the game autosave every cycle...oh 5:00. Thanks for explaining, I guess that's why I like watching your videos. Appreciate all the work, restart all you want.
Thank you Gimble.
It took me 24 times to get the carnivore achievement. I used the pips to supplement meat. Also, go over to the other planet to harvest all of their critters for meat and ship back for bbq. There will be at least 20 critters which will lower the amount of hatches to 80. I’m glad you realize that you need to play fast and loose. Good luck
i know im late but you did the right thing, this game is all about starting over and learning from our mistakes and thats what you did, so cant really be mad at you for that.
Thanks Apex, enjoy the series!
I was hoping to jump in and reassure you that there would be no controversy. But the community here is so great that my words of insight feel entirely pointless. A restart is exactly what is needed when doing things like this. Honestly, if you restarted one more time I’d watch the whole video still one more time ^.^
Achievement tip: PAUSE A LOT! Keep it up slow. Your first 100 cycles will be the slowest and most mundane. You need a dupe constantly running on that wheel, get them a light. Put those incubators on timers. Go unnecessary. I think i had like 15 incubators or something all running with personalized timers to the hugger would be nearby to get them all in order with minimum power drain. They are power consumers.
Honestly, getting to the second planet and using those resources helps so much. Sacrificing some of the ore for a single plug slug helps release that dupe from running constantly. Focus completely and entirely on the first 100 cycles getting carnivore.
We already knew the odds of success were less than 33%. Having the first run fail is not surprising.
Also, I approve of care packages.
The restart makes sense - looking forward to seeing this run. Your still not guaranteed to win :)
I did the carnivore achievement by using the teleporter. Killing every critter on that other asteroid and bringing in meat, while everything on the main base is focused on keeping dozens of incubators running.
How dare you restart to make better content. Simply, Outrageous!
lol. Thank you for the chuckle.
Start restart it don't matter we are just here for your smooth jazzy voice! 😉
Nah as soon as I realized what was going on I thought it would’ve been better to restart.
Oh and use footage that had already gone by for the credits.
I actually think it’s harder to restart than to just keep going, so I liked it
Carnivore is indeed the harshest achievement to chase. I always end up in this "Wait, was I too slow?" mad panic every time, I don't think I've ever beaten it with a lot of room to spare.
Last time, I beat it on cycle 97. And I had a starting area of Sandstone Biome, so I had plenty of hatches to make up for delays.
I was hesitant to watch at first but boy I was wrong 😂
Now I can't get enough of it 😂
Keep up the good work man
Much appreciated
Love from India 🎉
On my hardest difficulty achievement runs I failed a couple of time, because the mush fry added a lot of time to get made, thus getting into the spiral of death through too much work errands. On a lucky coincidence I then had a shine bug in the kitchen area and it killed of the germs from the mush bar through its radiation.
a good tip for the earlygame:
mining oxylite doesnt change the total output of oxygen, it only changes the speed it emits it being about half as fast as an oxylite tile
I've done a video on this :)
packages on:doable
packages off:impossible
Fully support the restart since it's an all achievements attempt and if you can't get those then it's not a all achievements, and yes transparency earns you a lot of points :)
I'm upset this wasn't posted yesterday 😢, I have needs Echo
lol. Wednesday and Sunday :)
No shame in admitting defeat. The greatest chess player of all times, ever so often pushes his king on its side.
I started playing oni again after the last video, decided to go for a similar run in a different asteroid, already on my third attempt into carnivore...
New viewer and watching from the beginning, never played the game but you make it very entertaining :)
Also 11 months later the colony restart was valid for SURE
Trying to do this run is definitely not easy and not for everyone. I've had to do the same thing in my own run a few times already while still in the first 100 cycles. I even lost my first ever dupe while trying to do this same scenario since it seems like for every problem that gets solved another appears and I missed one until it was too late. I can't wait to see how somehow else handles the various challenges that come with this run.
I also enjoyed the happy little dumpster fire. I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of him on this "fun" playthrough.
I think it's crazy how far people will go to avoid pip ranching just because it's not "optimal". Its all about exponential growth for carnivore, and when you start with 5+ pips, it's much easier to get to critical mass and start BBQ. Yes, you need to put more time into ranching - just get 2 ranchers.
But by using what the asteroid gives you, rather than what's textbook/meta you dont have to resort to the easy way out (ie. Waiting for lucky pacu generation, enabling care packages, or teleporting to the flipped asteroid to hatch ranch - I consider that just admitting you cant do a true radioactive ocean run)
Not only can you pip ranch, you can easily get ethanol distillers with all the free wood and feed sanishells - just store up the ethanol for after super sustainable.
Maybe I'm just more sadistic than most people, but if the POINT is max difficulty on radioactive, I dont think concessions should be made that lower the challenge.
Yes, new echo video!
I was very intrigued by no care packages. I'll get over it :)
Me too. This just might be a bad seed for it. Going to try to limit its usage.
think the restart was a good thing :) nice way to explane what happend 2 :)
Nothing wrong with starting over when you can foresee that you will not be able to achieve your objectives. It's kind of like within programming to have a conditional check for an early exit within a function to help out the branch predictor to save on computational power and time.
My favorite part of a playthrough is the start, so no complaints from me for the restart! I also much prefer a more optimized playstyle, both in watching and in playing.
Darn! You have to do what you have to do.
I also tried a carnivore run. But I'm about to fail miserably. My 12 dupes ate a lot of calories, but it's impossible to raise and consume 100 hatches without decent preplanning and some experience.
I like restarting. I get to see things evolve.
Frying the mush bar only save dirt and water at the cost of dupe labor (including the additional wheel time due to super sustainable) Your are mostly time restricted, not "dirt and water" restricted. Locavore will be hard on your cook(s), you may need to stay on unfry mush bar. Also your kitchen is far from the water.
Super video! Thanks!
you could put the ration boxes near the radiactive biome so its refrigirated/deep freezed and its low so it will also have carbon dioxide...
Restarting is cool. Everyone has to do it. No need to be pretentious and prerecord the entire serious to make sure you don’t have to restart on camera lol 💯
I'm a little surprised the title wasn't 'Episode 1... again' lul
I missed an opportunity! ha.
Biohazardous/Iron Gut dupes always crack me up.
No complaints here for the restart. The point is to get all the achievements, and restarting so early to make that possible just makes sense
Thank you.
I watched one other person go for the carnivore achievement, and it wasn't on this map, he started on Terra, but still only got the achievement around about day 95, so, wise decision to restart.
I did the carnivore by going to flipped fairly early with my digger punching holes to teleporters and defrosting friend giving him field research, then leaving him supplying sweetle eggs, hatch eggs and after a while meat when the critters got old. Also ranched pips and had way too many incubators with manual switches... never doing that again but i got it :D ps. I really like it if you preserve the abyssalite, makes it more interesting!
Thank you for sharing and for the comment.
I have been wanting to do this exact run. But I have trouble keeping the dupes fed. Seeing a failed attempt and this much stronger one is great.
Throw some doors around that printing pod room for the Laboratory room bonus XD
Need to remember this!
Thanks for being transparent. I hate oversmooth gameplays which raise in me suspicion of secret save-scumming. I kind of understand if someone save-scums, ONI is a hard game to record and edit. It takes a long time, and to deal with frustrating disasters on top of that. However, I think disasters do make for fun content, but here it would have been impossible to get the carnivore achievement, so I agree with your decision.
Thank you Sushrey.
Great Episode
It's pretty cool that colony restarted, it would be pointless to try for achievements anyway with so little chance
Ignore any haters. The restart is okay and we love any more echo content
Thank you Gabby
I like that you restarted.
Thank you.
The restart was necessary. And even the care package is acceptable, given it adds some nice Randomness to the whole thing.
Thank you.
I'm amazed that you played it through to cycle 100 just to test if it would work. I see no reason why you should continue suffering
Thank you.
6:50 Well, look.
You either restart a run that you failed, or the series ends here.
*That would be a damn shame.*
This is the right choice.
Love it! cant wait for more!
Restarting feels 100% justified, let the tryhard go nuts :)
Yes. Ha.
I do carnivore every colony i do and i only play on the frozen asteroid (also hatchless). while pips are indeed inferior to hatches, 3 wild trees means they are just about self suficient and a little amount of meat is better then no meat.
You should give them a go at the early game and then change to hatches as their numbers grow, never failed me even once.
You can give them no downtime on day 1 without any consequences and 1 slot of sleeping time, as they sleep until full on stamina anyway.
I am ok with both the restart and the care packages. I start over often if I need to. All good!😊😊
No big deal with restart. Part of the game!
Hey, what don't you manage Your schedule a little bit? When You wasn't sure if You fill the wash basin on time You could just put higher priority on that and set longer shift for one duplicant. I think actually You can gave them 1 more hour of free time instead one hour of sleep. They will sleep till 100% stamina anyway. With 1 more hour of free time they shouldn't skip their sleep time and You should get +1 morale for having more free time.
What You can also do is You can build only two toilets and one washing basin at the very beginning and move duplicant bath time schedule slightly so they all could use one toilet and washing basin. Second toilet just in case.
Ok, I wrote it JUST before Your part about schedule in video.
There is no point to set more sleep time for them. They will be sleeping even if stamina is 100%. On the other hand if You set them just 1 hour of sleep they will sleep longer than 1 hour but wake up just when stamina reach 100%. Most optimal setting is 1hour of sleep but You need to be 100% sure they will not skip it.
It is good to have they free time overlap so they can chat together and get additional bonus.
I saw the dumpster fire , we aren't there ... yet !
Restart how many times you want, If you are having fun we will have fun too.
Your going for one of the hardest playthrough you can. I expect a few restarts.
Anything for all achievements. You can do it.
I think I need to restart my own all achievement run I started. I also started on a Verdant planet, so I had to get creative for oxygen generation (Spoiler I put an exposed pool of polluted oxygen at the bottom of my base). I'm at cycle 60 and although I have 12 dupes and enough mouths to get through the 357000 meat calories I need to eat, I started my ranching far too late so there's no way, even with care packages on.
I think I need to do what you did, but normally I avoid giving my dupes free skills. On my restart I'm going to give my digger hard digging, my researcher advanced research and my rancher critter ranching. I think I'll reroll my seed because I didn't pay attention to my settings and I'm very short on geysers and I only just recently found a cool steam vent very far away. I may have to restart again on my new seed but hey that's okay. Maybe I'll just save a start file, explore a bit then restart knowing where some desirable stuff is. I'm still going to use the same planetoid because I'm challenging myself to find ways of making oxygen without algae.
this man talks like a maths teacher
For this series i give you the achievement, speedrun of a failure.
You're not ready for this...
