When I saw the title, I got worried that we lost Mel Brooks. Mel Brooks is an absolute treasure, this is a really well made video to him! I love Mel Brooks!
Considering he's 96 year old, I had to Google whether he had died when I saw this video. Not that someone needs to die before they get a tribute made to them, but with his age, I had to be a bit worried.
Mel Brooks was, is and will always be in my top three directors ❤️ thanks for this video James, but know you got me shocked for a moment, thinking Brooks died! 🤣😒
I think my favorite gag is in High Anxiety where Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman are sitting down talking and the camera is shooting up at them from below a glass table and they keep putting things on the table and the camera has to keep moving around so we can see them. When I realized what was happening I laughed so hard.
You know they are having fun with the movie because there are even some scenes, where it was hard for them to stay into character. Like the scene in Blazing Saddles when Gene's character says "You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons." and Cleavon character immediately starts laughing before the screen changes. I am sure it took them a while to get the right shot and that was the best they could have done.
This is amazing. I was just discussing with some friends about Blazing Saddles playing at a local drive in this month. Suffice to say, a friend and I are going tomorrow. Great timing of this video James!
My favorite Mel Brooks thing is that pretty much right up until the day Carl died, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks would get food from the same diner and have dinner together every day while watching TV and eating off of TV trays.
You saw the episode of Comedians in cars getting coffee? That got me too, like these two guys, legends in their own rights, and they just get together to eat dinner and watch TV. As if it's the most ordinary thing in the world...😅
Whenever Mel Brooks teamed up with Gene Wilder you knew you were getting something that would be funny forever, the Blazing Saddles scene shown at the end (with The Waco Kid talking to Sheriff Bart about the locals) still makes me laugh out loud today, his delivery was perfect and you can feel Mel Brooks's influence in every word. Classic!
Mel Brooks is so cool!! An old friend showed me Get Smart! and we watched it together and its hilarious. That's awesome that he's such a master of parodying film. I wanna someday make a series that parodies anime and video games in funny, clever ways; too. Thanks for the video and spreading the word of Mel Brooks awesomeness.
Sadly, there aren't many left from his classic films. Teri Garri is the only lead cast member still alive from Young Frankenstein, and I believe Brooks himself is all who remains from Blazing Saddles (EDIT: I saw that Robyn Hilton who played his secretary is still with us).
Mel Brooks, "Okay, so I died and came back from the dead, I don't get what all the brou ha ha's about, Christ came back from the dead, and I'm nowhere near that guy."

Thank you for doing this before he is gone. I bought so many of his movies on DVD being afraid his work would be cancelled. This man's work made me and my Dad laugh for decades.
Mel Brooks sure reminds me of Stan Lee and his many cameos. I also always wonder where he would appear. It is a similar thing, but Mel usually has a hilarious bit, and Stan.. well it's really more of a show-up kind of thing, with a small joke. Which is cool and pretty awesome in its own way (not to reduce the awesomeness of Stan)
Have to say. You scared me there for a while. Not that one can’t honor greats while they are alive but it just felt like a eulogy or that one is just so used to that these kind of videos shows up when they die. Fantastic video, James. A great man indeed.
Mel Brooks for sure molded my sense of humor. My dad loved Blazing Saddles and couldn’t figure out why, he was just nagging about on and on and on when I was a kid. And then I finally looked it up in the adulthood… best. Craziest comedy I’ve ever seen and now it’s my favorite comedian and comedy movie. 😏and Pink panther was played every weekend I remembered.

@@JM-pm1yb It's because they were terrible. Mel Brooks pushed the enveloped, sure, but all those spoof movies were trying to be raunchy for raunch's sake, using it as an excuse to be disgusting instead of trying to be funny.
You should do a follow up to this video about his son Max. Max Brooks wrote The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. Nowhere near his dads accomplishments but I’m sure Mel is super proud of the niche his son has carved and I just think it’s pretty nifty how his son grew up to be an “expert” in something like zombies and zombie survival. Mel is an absolute legend and it’s super cool to see people still talk about him and his flicks.
What's really impressive is that he never became a punch line in any adult swim and Seth MacFarlane project. Heck even when he was on the simpsons it didn't feel like they were making fun of him

There was a teasing of a Blazing Saddles stage adaptation but that never happened, and understandably so. Although, I think Men In Tights would be fun on stage.
What I love about Mel is how he never let age slow him down. Not long ago during his concrete ceremony at the Chinese Theater, he had a prosthetic finger added next to his pinkie so when you would find his signed slab, you’d count 11 fingers total between those two hands. He is one of the kings of comedy that will always be treasured now and forever.
I was just thinking of Mel Brooks the other day. I’m happy he’s still alive. What an impact he had on my vision of comedy. Comedy today is just so lacking compared to his films.
One of the few things I can thank my ex for; introducing me to more of Mel’s work. I had seen men in tights without understanding who Mel was, but now seeing more of his films it holds a special place in my heart. History of the World is probably my favorite movie 🎥
I love Mel Brooks movies they are some of the funniest movies I've seen. Spaceballs and Blazing Saddles are some of my favorites. I can pretty much quote Spaceballs verbatim.
My favorite jokes are all from Spaceballs, from Ludicrous speed & the industrial hairdryer, to "Spaceballs the flamethrower!" & "You captured their STUNT DOUBLES!!"
I for one felt the trigger warning was well intended and well placed. I have actually never finished Blazing Saddles because of the language, even though I was well warned by my father beforehand (who saw it in the cinema when it came out almost 50 years ago). The overall excess use of the n words and racial slurs was so out of place for a Mel Brooks film, it overshadowed the comedic parts. Like, objectively it's different from most of his other comedies.
trigger warnings are a stain on our culture as it implies that only a subset of our population are actually emotionally stable. Blazing Saddles wouldn't be anywhere near as effective without its use of language as it is and to preclude it with a warning is disarming in a way that was never meant to be. Poor implications for the development of our society.
Such a comedic legend and visionary, I've loved watching any of his works especially High Anxiety, Dracula: Dead and Loving it, Spaceballs, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
I quote " high anxiety" daily and nobody ever knows what I'm talking about, but it just makes it funnier. You need to check it out, it's mels' homage to Alfred Hitchcock. Shout out to Chloris Leachman for being the perfect Nurse Diesel ❤️
