    Thanks Michal for this excellent tutorial. As you said towards the end, the curves tool had me all befuddled, however this tutorial is very well explained and logical. I will watch this again to practice some more. Cheers from Australia.

      Glad it’s helpful, Peter. I know many people that avoid using it due to lack of understanding or intimidation. Which is a shame, as it’s so powerful!

    Thanks for this tutorial. Most comprehensive and logical approach. Start with grey curves and then migrate to actual images. I've been gradually comprehending the tone curve but this tutorial helped a lot.

    Thanks Michael. I enjoyed the use of examples and the actual demonstration of the different effects. Great instructional technique! My challenge right now is trying to overcome the 'glare' of the ice in shooting hockey games. Trying to find that balance of reducing the highlights without destroying the rest of the picture. Hopefully with what I've learned here Tone Curves might be the answer? Cheers

      First things first, thank you for the kind words. I’m glad you found this helpful! As for your specific question around hockey rink ice, it may help, but it’s not something I have experience with. Typically, I would suggest the use of a circular polarizer filter to help eliminate glare during the capture process, but that may require a problematic exposure change - either raising your ISO more than you’d like, or slowing the shutter speed to gather more light - if the rink isn’t well lit (probably not an issue for an NHL rink, for instance, but local rinks, etc. are often not as well lit, as I’m sure you’re aware!).
      The other “issue” with a CPL filter is, of course, it can’t be undone as it will be baked into the captured file.
      May take some playing around with your existing files, tone curve, etc. while also maybe trying a CPL during a game for some throwaway shots to see if it helps.

    best tone cure explanation , this is exactly what I was looking for . just one question ,do I need to use the tone curve after I set the basic sliders or I can only use the tone curve I'm train to understand if there is a right why or what ?

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography  2 місяці тому

      Technically, you can use it at any point of your workflow. I generally set my profile, then make exposure and contrast slider adjustments (I usually drop exposure a bit, and take the contrast slider down to a range of -15 to -30). After that, I’ll make my tone curve adjustment. I’d recommend doing it fairly early on like that since contrast - however you manage it - can impact colors, as well (hence the new saturation slide for tone curve, too).
      That being said, it’s rarely set it and forget it. As I make other adjustments, I’ll often revisit multiple adjustments and tweak as needed, including the tone curve.

    I think it's still painful for me to play with the curves, especially the color ones, but your tutorial is the first (out of countless!!!) that made me understand the mechanics behind it.

      That’s great to hear! It took a while for it to “click” for me, too.

    Great explanation of tone curve!
    One queston. What would be the main benefit of setting the white and black points with curves opposed to whites and blacks sliders in Basic menu?

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography  5 місяців тому +1

      Glad you found it helpful! If I’m not mistaken, there’s a bit of an algorithmic curve applied to the White and Black sliders that you “bypass” using the tone curve. Alex Nail has a deeper dive set of videos on the tone curve that gets into the technical aspects of the sliders versus tone curve.

      I believe the first video is the one where he shows what has to be done with the time curve tool to replicate the Basic panel sliders. Been a while since I watched it.

    I have a dream ! Adobe could give us the option to put the curves fullscreen on a second monitor, the level of control would be crazy! Do you know a way to do this? The ALT and SHIFT tip is really good, I didn´t know that. When I want to be more detailed on the curve I add a point and with the cursor on it, I press the up and down key on the keyboard to go step by step. Really good class! Thanks!

      Glad you found it helpful! Unfortunately, there’s no way to pop the curves tool out to make it bigger or move it to a second screen. The best you can do is expand the width of the right-side panel overall.
