      Definitely cannot sit up fully. I can sit cross-legged but have to be bent over. Otherwise, I can recline against the back of the front passenger seat fairly comfortably if I’m laying in bed and want to read or something. Obviously, your height will play a huge role in how much you can or cannot sit upright! 🙂

      Using lower resolution versions of images for editing is exactly what the use of smart previews in Develop does. Otherwise, it ultimately comes down to your system (and keeping in mind this list is a few years old at this point).

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography 25 днів тому

      If you’re comfortable doing it over a shared network, I assume that would work as long as Lightroom sees the laptop as a drive (for lack of a better way to put it). Depending on your network speeds, using an SSD and fast wired connection may be faster, too. Anyways, there are different ways to approach it for sure. 🙂

    Hi Michael, Just came across this video. Thankyou for championing one of lightroom’s least understood features. Couple of points. 1. I normally auto stack with a 3 second filter which unless I am doing long focus bracketing shots seems to neatly separate out high speed bursts, in camera focus stacking and as an OM user Procapture bursts. 2. The small tile with the number in at the top left corner is intelligent. If you click on the tile in the first image in the stack it expands or closes the stack as you said. If you double click on any of the other tiles in the stack it will promote that photo to the top of the stack. If you shift click the first image tile it will open the stack and select all images in the stack (useful in a focus stack so you can export all images to stacking software). If you right click the tile it will display a stacking menu. 3. I use stacking to cull photos- shift click a stack to select them all, either use N to show a grid of all the photos in the stack or F and direction arrow to flick through the images and choose the one’s I want to keep. Press backslash to remove the ones you want from the selection then backspace to delete the rest. If I don’t want any of the stack just backspace to delete them all. Adobe produces fantastic software with some amazing usability features that are sometimes documented only in some deeply buried support article. Thanks for the video

    Great video Michael and something I'll have to start doing. Just a question though - 4 minutes in, when you're in Survey View, you click on a few different images and they're all highlighted. If I click on one, then move to the next one, it doesn't keep the first one. What do I do to make sure each image stays in the selection?

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography Місяць тому

      Hey, sorry for the delayed response... at that point of the video, I was still in Grid view. You can use that to make multiple selections and then, when you enter Survey view, only those selected photos will be included. Otherwise, you are correct in that you can't select multiple images when within Survey view itself. I hope that helps clear things up!

    A great walkthrough, Michael! Would love to leave a personal comment, as someone that been using Lightroom since it's inception and Photoshop since v4.0 - and taught classes in Lightroom specifically at Apple and for NatGeo photographers. 0. Unless you're married/paying for Adobe Cloud Sync -> always stop/disable it first before anything on import. You can always upload to Cloud later, if you choose so, but it does slow import A LOT. 1. Have the right hardware. The workflows of editing in-the-field on a laptop is vastly different from having a dedicated in-house workhorse machine. Just like 3d-modelers buy a specific combination of CPU+GPU for Maya/3dMark processing, photogs need to be wary of that as well. Certain GPU cards are more tailored, and there are ways to optimize them (plenty of tutorials online on that alone) for LR/PS use + drivers. - Older catalog/images, check your Develop-> Calibration options, as Michael pointed-out, sometimes it's more efficient, or if you want to upgrade to a newer processing backend, sometimes there is improvement, even on older hardware. - Not advised, but doable - have the highest throughput RAM you can, and if you can over'clock it, will improve processing - BUT ONLY if your PC can handle it. As noted, not advised (if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it), but can help if you're dealing with massive uploads, or trying to review/quick-edit files from say Sony α7 III or Hasselblad X2D 100C, even tethered. 2. I deal with often 180gb of photo drops daily. Have the fastest dedicated SSD for your catalog, linked with second "slower" SSD for your main import drop. 3rd HDD for storage...and I personally have a few 4th HDDs for once-a-day sync to back up both the catalog and after-culling folders for long-term storage. Twice-a-month, the entire stack of 3rd and 4th is getting backed up to a 8x HDDs RAID'ed NAS. Basically, triple redundancy. I have near zero trust in any online storage solutions, or how those images "might" be scraped in the modern age, everything is stored locally. 3. The preview-adjustment and smart preview is a great cache-saving tip, if you're a laptop user. Highly recommend, as you mentioned. For PC-users, start with 32gb of dedicated RAM at least. 4. Optimizing catalog, my team does it 2x+ times a day, basically when we get a coffee break :) Made a custom script for it, two buttons press, and you can walk away from keyboard while it's processing. Personally, I found about 12-15% speed improvement in LR doing that regularly. Kudos on that tip. 5. Camera Raw Cache - great tip as well, but based on your hardware. LR cache "sometimes" can conflict with Windows cache based on SSD your're running/priority level, and how they overwrite themselves -> you can set priority of apps. Ideally, you're only have LR open so it doesn't conflict with ANYTHING. But changing priority of app that has access to cache will improve performance by maybe 3-5%, from personal experience. It really makes a difference with big catalogs - say you shot a wedding and have 4.5K of photos to process -> every percentage counts when you're trying to cull a on the tight deadline. 6. Detail/Sharpening - Will absolutely bog LR down if you do it first, should always be the last step, before export. Hope this tips help someone! :)

    Great video - THANKS! BUT I have a big problem maybe you can help with, PLEASE. For background, I do architectural photography and occassionally create a virtual copy to zoom into a detail. That is, I want both the zoomed and unzoomed versions. The problem is they STICK TOGETHER even if I "unstack" them! I like to move the zoomed (unstacked) version to another location in my export by simply renaming it (I always sort by filename) in the Library page. This used to work perfectly, but now the images STICK together no matter what I do. Unstacking seems to have no effect - they should rename it "glue." What am I missing - or is this a bug you may have heard about? I'm using a Mac if that provides a clue. Thanks again for a great channel.

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography 3 місяці тому

      I haven’t heard of any bugs related to stacking. Perhaps a silly question, but are you actually unstacking them from each other, or are you possibly just expanding the stack? You can tell if it’s the latter as they’ll still show the numbering (1 of X, 2 of X, etc.). I create virtual copies frequently for recording tutorials and I always move them into a separate collection to “protect” my originals, although I’ll admit I don’t do much exporting of virtual copies.

    • @AerialLensVideo
      @AerialLensVideo 3 місяці тому

      @@MichaelRungPhotography Thanks, Michael - Just checked and they do not have the numbers showing, but DO have the little triangle "flap" on the lower right of the thumbnail. As to unstacking, yes that is correct, yet both still move when only one has been renamed. I am sure I pick Unstack because that is the only option ever chosen (I do see the expand option in the dropdown, but haven't known what it means - Ha).

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography 3 місяці тому

      @AerialLensVideo oh, wait a second… I think I misread your original comment. Are you trying to move the virtual copy to a different location by dragging it from one place to another, or by changing the file name? Virtual copies don’t duplicate the original file on your hard drive. They “point” to the same file as the original version in LrC. Can you clarify what you’re doing when you reference exporting?

    • @AerialLensVideo
      @AerialLensVideo 3 місяці тому

      @@MichaelRungPhotography Michael, you nailed it and solved the problem. Without thinking, after Unstacking I was apparently renaming the Copy - a zoomed in detail - to be in the #1 spot of a series (sorted by filename) prior to exporting everything, wishing the original real photo to remain further down the line. Apparently LRC does not take kindly to that method 🥴. Thank you so much!

    I use Survey mode all the time. The only issue is it's taken a performance hit over the last year or so from the updates. I used it a lot to steer sets to being cohesive, have a second screen in Survey mode whilst the other one in Develop fine tuning the edit. But when doing this the Develop mode becomes sluggish. Quitting Survey on the second screen and putting it back to Library (Grid etc) fixes that issue. Shame because it was definitely my preferred second screen display option.

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography 4 місяці тому

      Interesting. Can’t say I’ve used it on a second screen more than once or twice, and not recently.

    • @SummersSnaps
      @SummersSnaps 3 місяці тому

      @@MichaelRungPhotography Yeh, if you are in Develop Mode one screen and use Survey for the other, its nice because its like Reference Photo except multiple shots up on screen, however you will notice a poorer performance in Develop when doing this.

    How does your bed frame “float” above the pull out tray? Sure would like to see how you built your bed frame.

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography 4 місяці тому

      It’s basically just cantilevered out over it (think a notch in the end of the frame). If you look at the linked blog post and download the build instructions, it will make more sense. 🙂

      @@MichaelRungPhotography , no worries. It looks like your bed runners are cantilevered on the folded rear seats. The runners look like they hover over the pull out tray. On another note, your Mamiya large format photos are amazing, btw.

    • @MichaelRungPhotography
      @MichaelRungPhotography 4 місяці тому

      @sabio2009 the bed frame does sit on the tray, but the end is cantilevered over the plastic lip on the tray (where the release handle is). The boards are sanded smooth so they glide nicely when I pull the tray out. As for the photos… I think you have me confused with someone else as I don’t shoot large format. 🙂

      It should be in the upper left of the left pane. If not, it’s likely collapsed. Just click on the little arrow to expand it.

    Hello Michael. I own a small studio with a nas server. We store all our files there. In order to edit we need to move the catalog on a local hdd or on the Mac desktop. That is slow and inconvenient. We need to click each directly from the nas server instead. Lightroom says it cannot open a catalog on an online nas server (Synology ds923). We have bypassed it for our windows pc with a line of code but we cannot do it on our 4 other macs. Is there a solution? I could defined pay for a solution of that kind. Or if there is someone on this comment sections. Thanks!
