My Hoya compacta was filled with mealy bugs. I let it soak completely in warm water with horticultural soap and neem oil for a half hour. It killed them all.
That's a good idea. Do you soak it upside down to keep the pot & soil out of the water ? I don't think I've noticed mealy bugs on my compacta, but I'll check it again today.
@@3l3llala13 I took it out of the pot and removed the soil. Then I dunked it and let it soak. Gave it fresh soil. I didn’t want to take the chance that there might be pests in the soil. She is doing really well.
OMGosh, you are sooo correct on these!! I have mentioned before that I purchased some plants because of the hype.. but NOW, absolutely not. The compacta I wouldn't get for that exact reason, hiding places for mealybugs and with me being new to hoyas, I'm doing my best to keep up with treating some and not looking to seek out more hiding places bahhh!!! Keep these coming, I do beat myself up sometimes saying I shouldn't have purchased them if I wouldn't go above to keep them alive and healthy. So it helps to see these and read the comments on how others struggle too. Great plant fam!
I so agree with the linearis. I've been fighting mealies on mine for a while now. I remove them and drench them in alcohol. I even had a ladybug party and they are still coming back. Compacta's are just as difficult. I'm on my second. After this one dies. I'm done.
Many thanks for this video. Interesting to watch. I agree with one of your viewer’s comments. Some plants seem to come from healthier stock/genes than others. A few of my Hoyas are not as healthy looking as they were during the growing season but I’m hoping it’s the Winter season and not a decline in their health that is the cause. On the other hand I have five 6 in pots of Hoyas that are growing like they have no clue it’s Winter. 😂. I do still get some mealy bugs from time to time and usually after two treatments, the mealies are gone. Wishing much good luck to all of us Hoya lovers! 👌🪴🥰
Hi Jaclynn, you are looking so pretty, that first Hoya is one I have never seen in person. I have always had the buy 3 rule, I will buy a plant up to 3 times and usually by the third time I have figured out what I was doing wrong and then it stays alive, and if it doesn't then I won't buy it a 4th time ever! I have also never seen the Hoya linearis in person, and it is on my wish list. I only have the Hoya green hindu rope, I love the variegated one but have not ever found one yet, I have to say that those stinking mealy bugs are such a pain in the butt, this last year in December was the first year I ever got mealy bugs, and I still don't know why I ended up with those stupid bugs. I have the plain green Hoya kerrii, I got it for only 9.99 and it is doing just fine, knock on wood it doesn't have mealy bugs. Your 5th Hoya is so pretty and I have wanted one of those, but it is on my wish list as well. I agree about plants that we like and plants that we are not fond of. There are some Calathea that I am not a fan of, those plants can be tricky and I have struggled with those in the winter especially. Thanks again for another great video, take care and have a great day, sending love and hugs, bye! 😢😻💜💜💜👍🪴🌹🌵

I don’t own one specifically because I have no clue how I would treat it for pests.
My Linearis died 2 times, now I have some cuttings but they are also dying off 😢. I have a small cutting of the compacta that didn't grow in 2 years! But didn't die either. We went on a 3 week holiday this summer and I put in a propbox to keep it moist and now it has a new leave. Hope the mealybugs keep away 🙏

My Krohniana black was doing great and suddenly got root rot so I put it in water to reroot and glad it’s slowly rooting. Also agree with the kerrii. It gets tall and leggy and I’m going to put a rabbit fence around the pot to help it. Not thrilled with that and its flowers drip sap. So we will see about keeping that one. Have you done an update lately? Thanks for sharing
I totally agree with the sap, but unfortunately, all Hoya blooms do that. It drives me crazy!!! Makes everything so sticky! Nevermind the mess when they die back and fall on the floor 🙄 I haven't done any updates, but I'm happy to do another video like this!
For plants like compacta I use a systemic to keep the mealies away and as for linearis I’ve tried three times. My current one has top light and I mist/wet the top layer every few days and water deeply when the whole thing is about dry and the leaves feel flat. This has been working for me so far. The leaves are now 6ft long

I just bought a big hanging basket of hoya Chelsea. I wish big box stores would carry smaller hoyas ugh, anyway I don't have much experience with hoya and mine are all small. Would it be very difficult to split the larger hanging basket into a few smaller plants? It just feels overwhelmingly big. Thanks for any tips!! 😊
I understand perfectly your frustration with the mealy bugs on hoyas, specially the compacta hindu. I am mortified to see how mine gest infested and it is so difficult to clean and get rid of the bugs... It is a lot of work and besides, the plant looks dirty and ugly when is infected.
Agree, Jaclynn....if your hoyas don't bring you joy and happiness anymore I can't blame you for not buying them anymore. It should be a hobby of love not a fear of drudgery cleaning mealybugs all the time. Have you ever considered keeping your list of hoyas in leca? Leca pretty much solves the pest problem & you can literally go weeks without watering😅 I've converted all my hoyas for this reason & have nevee gotten mealys ever!
You can still get bugs when growing hydroponically. Growing in water doesn't prevent pests except for fungus gnats. I'm not a big fan of Leca or pon tbh. So if I can't keep it well watered in soil, it's out, lol
@@jaclynns.jungle You may get pests but it is severely reduced & controllable. I've been using leca for the past 5 years & have never gotten any pests. For context, I live in a subtropical climate so any plant that I have in soil is a pest magnet (since the soil is constantly wet). Most pests are attracted to very wet or dry soil & leca is neither. You can spray pesticides every few months as an extra preventative too. & even if you do get pests, I've seen people just simply wash their plants & boil the leca to rid of them. I've even converted many infested plants from soil to leca & they showed immediate results. You can go weeks without watering & it's very cost effective since leca is reusable. I feel like you might be an underwaterer. All of those hoyas mentioned are thirstier varieties. I had the opposite issue as I'm an overwaterer lol! The biggest issue with hoyas is some of those can get dry rot so quick with under watering. Then you drench it once every 2 to 3 weeks and it goes downhill. My linearis gets watered almost every 4 days religiously haha! Hope you try some again!!
Systemic is extremely harmful to the environment, pets, and good bugs (esp. bees!!). It’s actually illegal to use in certain states because of how harmful it is. There are much more natural methods that work way better!
Curiously your list includes 4 of my “ never again” hoyas. I would probably remove from your list the hindu rope (just because mine is beautiful and no bugs so far) and I would replace it with the rettusa. As an extra I would add the curtissi too!😂
some plants i don't like is mango plant and guava cause they grew for a few months was happy but ended up dying off on me last year so never buying it again so sad
I have one with zero issues. I’ve underwatered it too and it was no problem for it. It didn’t grow much when I was chronically underwatering but it’s much bigger than it was when I got it. I think sometimes the vigor depends on how healthy the plant is when you got it. I got mine back when it was $50 for just a small little pot of it (you can get the same size for about $10 now) and it’s been very rewarding.
Hi hunie, I agree with you on the sigillatis. My is slowly dying. Oh noooooo......the lineras too??? It's such an easy hoya. I have more cutting for you. Lol Luv you 💓 liz
I too cannot keep a sigillatis alive for long along with the Krohniana. The leaves on the latter stay thin and slightly wrinkled all the time. I have 3 of them and they all act the same. even tho they are frequent bloomers I will not be purchasing them again.
I threw away my hoya compacta. I tried, it had mealybugs, chopped and propped, sprayed and still it had mealybugs when it rooted. I just gave up at that point.
Hoya curtisii for me, which is really sad because this is my first time EVER EVER owning a Hoya 😢!! I even had it in my window but It started yellowing , then dying, then breaking off the branches 🙄 anyway, IM OVER IT now onto new Hoyas (nothing towards anyone who does have a Hoya curtisii)
@@jaclynns.jungle omg thank you so so so much for replying!!!!! No it was from a plant friend! I have all trust in her, it wasn’t her fault, I guess I just didn’t know what I was getting into with this Hoya 😂
2 of them i have linearis and krohniana( this plant has problems after transport, becouse she likes drink water, and i got her dry. 2 i have never had, and one kerii variegate on Coco soil i killed.
The mealies on the compacta are why I’ll never own another one! Mine was like a cotton candy stall at the fair by the time those little plops were evident! Nope! 😂
80% agree. I've not had any issues with any of my kerrii varieties, but the other four I completely agree. I'd through curtisii in as well. Not really a fan of that one.
My list would be different but I support anyone having a list like this! For me, the incrassata I have is so hard and if it dies I will NOT re-buy. Most of the "DO NOT TRY AGAIN" list for me are peperomia. ;)
Hoya Incrassata should be fairly straight forward. Humidity should be around 80% so a cabinet or greenhouse, don't try a humidity tray, though I actually use them in the display cabinet, then all you need is a fan to move the air around. You can also keep a few leafy peperomias in there.
@@jhowardsupporter thanks for your suggestion. I don’t have a cabinet. The incrassata has mostly bounced back though and is doing fine in household humidity.
@@NewUkeNewYork A cabinet is a worthy investment and I bet Americans can get a cheaper one than the Ikea ones. I'm the ultimate money saver and I've decided to get 5 orchid flasks which will be around 500 Australian and will land me 100 new miniature orchids, probably worth a few thousand when grown but they are not for sale. Just having like 20 of these miniature phalaenopsis all in flower will be amazing. Anyway a greenhouse setup is highly recommended, then next most important is colored plants to break up the green like dwarf coleus, begonia rex hybrids, fuchsias with their flowers and so on.
@@jhowardsupporter I have a one bedroom apartment that's already full, and enough plants to take care of that do fine without a cabinet, so the space needed and additional tasks don't fit my situation. But your advice may help someone else. Sounds like you have a beautiful collection!
Hii!! Happy you found me! I do ship, I have a website that needs to be restocked this week, but I also take requests on Instagram if theres something specific of mine you were interested in ☺️
Love hoya, but variegated ones hate me. I've killed off crimson princess, variegated carnosa compacta, and Australia lisa. Can't seem to get the watering down right. Scared to try again.
Let them get bone dry and then soak them thoroughly. I soak mine in a bucket for 10 minutes. Hang it and let it drip dry. Don’t water again until bone dry again. Their leaves hold a lot of water so they don’t need watering very often.
I feel the same way as my hot heushkeliana variegated dries out and begins very slow death, there is nothing I can do to save it and I did all I could to keep it alive. I’m feeling this way about plants in general, happened last winter too, I guess I have the winter blues 😢
@@veronicaglover5693 we definitely go through periods like this and it's totally normal! For your heuschkeliana though I'd try re-rooting it! Sounds like it's not uptaking the water it needs, which means it probably doesn't have many roots!
I lost a lot of love for Hoyas a couple years ago and turned full force towards aroids. But I will say I kept some of my Hoyas and a couple years down the line I’m glad I did. Ive fallen back in love with the ones I have. I just don’t feel the need to get more. I think if I bought one it would be the linearis.

You can spray pesticides every few months as an extra preventative. & for an extra extra tip, you can grow plants like aromaticus that are natural pesticides & place them around too. But if you do get pests, I've seen people just simply wash their plants & boil the leca to rid of them. I've converted many infested plants from soil to leca & they showed immediate results. You can go weeks without watering & it's very cost effective since leca is reusable. I wouldn't scrap it so fast when the effects are so promising.
P.S. If you ever need to be out of town or go on a long vacation, leca is your friend😂
I love Ficus your first 2 hoya no no's - I have to agree with you. The others, I love love love, for now that is. Thanks for your video
Yea I definitely am lol. I have too many plants to be watering more than once a week 🤷🏻♀️😅
Have you tried using a systemic insecticide on Carnosa Compactas? It seems like the perfect plant to use it on!
This is what I was wondering too. I’ve used the granular systemic on mine before for mealie bugs.
I'm sure it works! But I don't use chemicals in my home 😊
@@jaclynns.jungle Then they really aren't for you! I can't imagine keeping them without it. 😉
Systemic is extremely harmful to the environment, pets, and good bugs (esp. bees!!). It’s actually illegal to use in certain states because of how harmful it is. There are much more natural methods that work way better!
@@acatinthegarden I don't have bees in my house! I agree, and don't use it outside.
I feel this. Love Hoya but some are just a no.
The difficult ones just ain't for me lol
Curiously your list includes 4 of my “ never again” hoyas. I would probably remove from your list the hindu rope (just because mine is beautiful and no bugs so far) and I would replace it with the rettusa. As an extra I would add the curtissi too!😂
Thanks for your video, I appreciate your honestly about Hoyas. 🤟🏻
some plants i don't like is mango plant and guava cause they grew for a few months was happy but ended up dying off on me last year so never buying it again so sad
these are the same hoyas i struggle with for the most part 😭 i’m glad i’m not alone
You are definitely not alone!
I got tired on my khroniana as well right now I only have 5 leaves
The Hoya Sigaladis you showed first looks like a Hoya Pubicalix. Is it a close sister?
No, but when you see them in person, you'll realize they're not similar at all!
Oh, I just bought a "super silver". It's a baby. I hope my little guy does okay. I love certain Hoyas though. Thanks for sharing!
I'm sure you'll be fine! Just don't over or under water! It's not as forgiving as other Hoya, in my experience.
Lol
Luv you 💓 liz
Idk, those cuttings may die a slow death in my care 🤣🤣
Love and miss you boo! 💕
@@jaclynns.jungle love and miss you more. Come visit me!!
I too cannot keep a sigillatis alive for long along with the Krohniana. The leaves on the latter stay thin and slightly wrinkled all the time. I have 3 of them and they all act the same. even tho they are frequent bloomers I will not be purchasing them again.
Same!
I threw away my hoya compacta. I tried, it had mealybugs, chopped and propped, sprayed and still it had mealybugs when it rooted. I just gave up at that point.
Same 😑
Hoya curtisii for me, which is really sad because this is my first time EVER EVER owning a Hoya 😢!! I even had it in my window but It started yellowing , then dying, then breaking off the branches 🙄 anyway, IM OVER IT now onto new Hoyas (nothing towards anyone who does have a Hoya curtisii)
Too bad. Curtisii is my first Hoya and is thriving in a south east window
Was it from Costa? It might not be your fault, they sell some seriously unhealthy ones! I had to rehab all 3 of my curtisii from them!
@@beckythebealge they sunstress so cute in bright light! I love it!
Nope! 😂
On the flip side, my krohniana is huge and on its third blooming cycle this year with 7 blooming points. It’s one of my favourite plants
80% agree. I've not had any issues with any of my kerrii varieties, but the other four I completely agree. I'd through curtisii in as well. Not really a fan of that one.
People say that all the time about curtisii, but I've never had any issues with it! 🤷🏻♀️
What grow light is right behind you?
I think those were Sansi
I find all these plants so easy. You kinda just have to find the proper lighting and ignore them. Water every 3 weeks or so.
I'm glad that works for you but everyone's environment and care is different 😊
My list would be different but I support anyone having a list like this! For me, the incrassata I have is so hard and if it dies I will NOT re-buy. Most of the "DO NOT TRY AGAIN" list for me are peperomia. ;)
I don't even bother with peperomia anymore 🤣
Hiii👋 ran across your channel will surely follow was wondering do you ship and if so do you grow the hoya krimson king to sell cuttings?
Hii!! Happy you found me! I do ship, I have a website that needs to be restocked this week, but I also take requests on Instagram if theres something specific of mine you were interested in ☺️
@@jaclynns.jungle ok great was looking for a krimson king so whats your instagram
Try semi hydro :)
@@chomama1628 I second this!
Hello beautiful, great to see you feeling better. I know I been a little mia lately but I been lerking here in the background. Been super busy lately.
Always happy to have you here boo! ☺
Can you please start with meritum.
For me It's hoya compacta, and krimson queen/princess.
My mathilde is so stubborn too
Have you ever tried predatory insects?
Yes I use them all the time!
My kroniana rooted so well in soil and moss 🤷♀️
That's great!
Loved this vid as always.
I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
same with linearis. over that for good. could not keep it alive. could not rescue or propagate it.
Me neither. All the props also eventually failed 🤷🏻♀️
as a whole i just dont see the hype of the hindu rope. not a fan of linearis either. others i find unfortunate but now know what to not even attempt.
So what are your favorite plants? Majority of my wishlist plants are on this video & I'm curious to check out your's, if that's alright😊
I can agree with every single Hoya on this list!! 🙃
Glad it's not just me 😅
Thanks!
☺☺
It’s Hoya retusa for me
Mine never grows lol
I’m honestly falling out of love for my Hoyas
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that!
I feel the exact way. Worse Hoya's ever.
Beautiful, but annoying 🤣
Am with u to totally 😂 🙏
lol - the reason I will never buy a carnosa compacta is exactly that reason - MEALY BUGS!!!
The worst
i don't even have a hoya period!
You should get one! ☺
@@jaclynns.jungle well actually i can't get anymore plants cause i have plenty enough going on like bananas, avocadoes, citrus and other stuff
💚💚💚

It's Hoya Kerrii, Not Hoya Carry Eye... And People who really love plants do not call plants stupid.
People who aren't miserable don't leave stupid comments online.
I don’t agree with you at all . My Hoya linearis and Hindu Rope are absolutely stunning and thriving. The other three are also great. No Hoya collection is ever complete without these. Just my thoughts. I don’t want others to not buy them because you don’t want them.
People are capable of making their own decisions
