I didn’t even realize there was no eccentric tension. I was thinking I could replace my power rack, but now after you pointing this out I will not be. Thank you!
I'm not a fan of the StrengthErg overall. If someone has serious issues with balance or a physical limitation, it could be a great option with a small footprint. For everyone else though, I think free weights would be better due to the eccentric motion, as you said, and also building balance, coordination, and supporting muscles. Dumbbells take up minimal space and people can do a lot of exercises with them.
Your observation about the lack of eccentric tension is super useful and highly valid John, and rather rules it out for me. But you missed one feature that your dyna doesn't have, namely the ability to completely bypass the monitor and connect directly to the ergdata app. Concept2 will be selling the strength trainer at a lower price without the monitor and, based on your dyna experience, this will not only save money, but also avoid the need to bring your own elastic bands.
Yeah, and to be honest, I hardly ever turn the monitor on with the DYNO anyway. I've got it set to maximum air - and I just push and pull with all my might. It doesn't matter what I see on screen - when I'm done, I'm done!! It could say "You have pushed 150kg" or "You have pushed 300 bananas" - it doesn't matter. All that matters is the workout.
@@rowalong I think the PM5 connectivity is actually a motivator for me. If I can connect this equipment to the C2 world, logbooks and 3rd party apps, I’d find that super exciting! So for me, PM5 compatibility is really important.
I have a TotalGym which rounds out a strength workout with a fluid motion rather nicely. There is a UA-cam Channel, "Hybrid Resistance," where the guy has taken the workouts on the TG to the next level of strength training (vs. the marketing videos which are all about weight loss). If this weren't so expensive, I'd consider adding the StrengthErg to my home gym, but I"m not sure...we'll have to wait and see what happens when it comes out.
From watching the Dark Horse Rowing video the staff at Concept2 all seemed to emphasise that the StrengthErg was a tool to help maintain strength as you get older and/or less mobile. A lot easier to handle than free weights and more compact than a cable system but the lack of eccentric resistance means it isn’t really the tool for body builders. Still it looks like a great bit of kit that will complement their other machines, especially the RowErg.
My husband is older and this will be perfect for him. I don't know much about strength training but I'm not setting up a big machine in the garage that I won't use. But this new strengtherg seems perfect with its small footprint and I'll be buying one when it comes out. The real issue....I was going to buy a bike as my next piece...but since my husband will use this too - looks like it trumps the bike. Maybe I'll come into some more money and get both, lol.
@@rowalong …details matter. Apart from that lovely joke, I think that most exercise could be done safely by a use-your-own-body-weight-training. It’s as safe and way more affordable. 🤔
I was hoping C2 would make an assault style bike. Maybe the Rogue Echo has established too much dominance to try to compete against. I have all 3 c2 machines and am intrigued by this machine but it looks far too weak to challenge me. On the promo video the woman is leg pressing with barely any effort on level 7 which concerns me. I just don’t see it being in any way comparable to heavy leg presses, bench and barbell rows. Maybe their target market is geriatrics and people with poor mobility.
Much like the Row/Ski/Bike - the resistance the user gets out of it is very much reliant on the amount of power they put in. Like my DYNO - I can make it move easily by just easing into it - and the monitor will show 20kg on screen. But with the same settings, I can really mash my legs into it - and get 160kg of resistance. So I wouldn't worry about that side of things. I doubt they'll ever release an assault bike though. They had the chance when they designed the bikeErg. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong though!!
I have used a dyno a long time ago. I bought mine used it was a long piece and I heard a pain to ship. Dyno was ok to use I’m not sure what to feel about this product tbh
Olympic lifters manage to get strong without an eccentric phase... Arguably concentric only makes the exercise easier to recover from making it possible to increase the volume with less risk of over-training.
Although you're right - there's the element of stability with a machine like this (or at least, no INstability) and the attraction of logging the progression of strength and reps.
Oh wow looks very interesting. I couldn’t have one as you have limited space. It sure would help with strengthening legs n arms with the lack of pushing on return so you’re right. That was interesting. Too bad for those ppl that really could purchase it n it doesn’t have all around strength building. RowAlong Treasure Hunt
People love sled pushes and pulls, these are all concentric moves and loved on a sled because it causes less soreness, right? And every machine C2 has, does not have eccentric and people love rowing but rowing always hailed as full body also has no eccentric… people seem to have a double standard in wanting eccentric suddenly but they love sleds and gettting strong on rowers?? I do agree about eccentric. Olympic lifting for 1 rep maxes and taking big breaks makes really powerful individuals.
And that's why I said that if you're looking at this machine as a way to improve rowing, it's perfect. But if you're looking at this as something for all round strength increases, then it's not as perfect. It's still a good machine - but the lack of eccentric is going to mean slower gains.
I’ll add to that. If that had incorporated a flywheel mechanism akin to the Exxentric X Box, this machine could be a killer piece of resistance equipment. Could have easily accommodated that in the flywheel housing. Missed opportunity there
kBox isn't cheap though! I wouldn't say it's useless without eccentric, it just means it'll take longer to build strength/muscle than a machine/weights that does activate that portion of the move.

C2 have stated (quietly) that there's no eccentric, just concentric. That really does mean it is fundamentally flawed.
Exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. No Eccentric....

Yeah, it’s not like the lack of eccentric makes this machine useless. But it’s still an important consideration.
That was interesting. BTW, also good to hear somebody pronounce the K sound in eccentric. All my trainers have said "eccentric".
Oh, as in a hard E and then “sentric”?
Maybe I’m the one getting it wrong? 😑

So if there's no eccentric movement its basically a very expensive Bullworker??
Haha, it’s a bit better than that! But the lack of eccentric is an issue if you’re using this for more than rowing improvements
I have a bullworker actually good piece of kit
Not having eccentric resistance is a shame, but you could still train till faillure using concentric only and still build musscle.
Yup, but just not as quickly.
😂 I like the horse neighing on that picture of Shane.
Yay!!!! 🥳 I’m so pleased someone noticed it!!

You are so welcome!

Yeah, I could imagine it would be a pain to ship! And depending on the amount of assembly by the user when they got it, probably problematic too.
@@rowalong one thing I like about concept 2 is they made it easier to assemble each generation. Hopefully they do the same with this

The Concept 2 rowing erg and bike are brilliant. The "strength" erg, not so much. It is missing one key movement which is "pull down."
They might have an attachment for it possibly
Chest press? You do not need aby machine. Just do several push-ups. All other exercises can be done as elementary callistenics.
Although you're right - there's the element of stability with a machine like this (or at least, no INstability) and the attraction of logging the progression of strength and reps.
Get another fan and put it on the other end and there you have it, then you will have eccentric and concentric movement
No negative resistance, no go.

This just seems such a weird device to me.
Lack of eccentric is a dealbreaker.

It's missing half of any strength exercise you would perform on this erg. Not impressive at all.
It will still help people. But not as quickly as if it had the eccentric resistance for sure.
If there’s no eccentric it’s useless
