💥 Want to take the Queen’s College Step Test with me? 💥 If you’re curious about your VO2max score, follow along with this video ua-cam.com/video/P41S7f-AlqE/v-deo.html and take the test in real time. It’s simple, effective, and a great way to measure your fitness level. 🚀 Once you’ve taken the test, comment below with your VO2max score-let’s see how we stack up! 👇
Gave it a try and the numbers seem to align. I have no previous VO2max score, but this test estimated it at just over 50. On the concept2 site, that worked out to a 7:40 for 2k, which is spot on for how it goes for me (57/M/84kg) when I've attempted it. Thanks!
I finally got round to doing mine, good VO2 result at 45.12 but apparently that means my 2k time is 7 min 55! I have a lot of work to do on the erg! I also need to look at how this translates to my heart rate for various zone training... 54F 67kg. Thanks John 🙂
I think it’s an interesting result. I’m taking it as “I’m capable of this time if I’m sprint ready”. But until I do an actual test (back is getting better) I won’t know for sure. But it’s probably similar for you. You have the aerobic capacity to row that time, but you’d probably need to focus on power and speed for a few weeks to be able to do it. As for HR zones, that I’m a little more dubious about. Is such a generalised calculation that the error margins may be way off for deciding HR zones.
when I saw 54F, I just had to do mine!!! I thought I will do much worse than you, but well - I got 44.39 and thats ok (if I believe it - might repeat at some point to make sure) ! 2k in 8 minutes sounds more hypothetical. I am 50F, 63 kg, had to do it at 40 cm height, as I only had either 30 cm or 40 cm available and the website that is linked says nothing about lowering the height for women. Sadly, also iron deficient which can influence VO2. working on it!
What about the difference between someone 6’8” tall and someone 5’ tall with regards to step height? Seems like there needs to be a calibration for leg length to be accurate. It’s MUCH harder for a short person to do those steps than a tall person, all other things being equal. Or am I missing something fundamental? (Usually the case.)
There are lots of variables to this that I questioned. In fact I had to dig around a bit to find the change in height for men and women. But it still seems to be that there is very little variation in this test based on height / age etc - yet it’s still stood the test of time without trying to make it tailored for different people .
@@rowalong I improved my time by 5 minutes. So, I guess I have not been giving my max effort in the past. The vo2 max calculator indicates still room to improve.
It depends on how motivated you are to row, and your budget. The right answer, in a perfect setup is a concept2. You can get lucky and find a used one for around £500. And you’ll be able to sell it again for that if you change your mind about rowing. It’ll give you a bare bones workout if you just want to put on some tunes and row, but connect an app like the Aviron App - and you’ve got a world of games and challenges to keep you motivated. A water rower is great too. Less app connection for motivation though. There are some cheap C2 knockoffs that will give you a good workout - but won’t connect to apps. Avoid cheap magnetic machines. They won’t give you the resistance you need, or allow you a full range of motion when you’re rowing. Does this help?
Apple watch will estimate VO2 max when you do a brisk walk, hike or run outdoors. I’d be curious to try this method and see how they compare. RowAlong Treasure Hunt Rowed
Oh, it should have popped up a link to a quick video of me explaining that due to injuring myself at a HYROX sim, I couldn’t do it. But I will. Don’t worry. It’ll just take a couple of weeks to heal.
@@rowalong after watching this video on TV, I was looking for the link from phone but it would just show on PC... Sorry to hear about your SIJ injury. Did that compromise your participation to Hyrox event? Hope for quick recovery
What do you think about the algorithms that convert the achieved score on the ergometer into VO2max. On the rowinglevel website you enter time, distance, weight, age, gender and get VO2max. Do you think this can be authoritative? I have my doubts.
I think it’s based around the person who’s entering the info being a rower. By that, I mean I have a good V02max because of all the running etc I’m doing for HYROX. But I’ve not been training for a 2k - so I know I’m not in 7:02 shape right now. It’s just a shame I got injured and can’t prove this right now!! Give me a couple of weeks!!
@@rowalong There are more questionable conversion rates out there. Based on my 500m score (1.24.2), the site says I should achieve 6.31 for 2000m. I don't have the slightest chance.

Awesome!! That gives me a little more confidence for when I can do my attempt at 7:02!

Wow! And if you put your 5000m time into the C2 VO2max calculator, how do the results match up?

As does my Garmin. Which has me at a Vo2max of 55.
