Leica SL3 - A hybrid in Hand

Alex Archimbaud takes the Leica SL3 to London and Copenhagen to challenge the 60MP full-frame camera in many different situations. From photography using the new autofocus system and video production to manual photography with the compact Leica M-Lenses, Alex was able to take full advantage of the many creative possibilities of this camera.

If anyone is interested, in the film 'Chanel' a two and a half minute advert directed by Jean Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou she used a Leica M8 with a 90mm Asph F2 - with the 'M8' icon blocked out with a black piece of plastic. the camera was given to Audrey as a gift and she used quite extensively as her own personal camera - the reason Jean chose this camera was so that it didn't detract from the beauty of Audrey in the shot where she uses it and the writing on the lens is on the top rather than around the centre as most lenses have and also why the M8 logo was blocked up - she now has another Leica and I have her old M8 complete with the 90mm as used in the film.

I love shooting my M lenses with my SL2, and indeed shoot M lenses almost exclusively instead of my Leica L-mount lenses (though the 90mm f/2 prime is a gem). I wonder whether the SL3 is enough of an upgrade to merit the cost. Rendering on the SL2 is excellent already.

Rendering on the original SL could be considered unmatched fore some.

There's really no need to get an SL3 as you're inevitably going to use the same M lenses on it.

Nobody “needs” a leica. You can achieve similar results from a sony a7cr for 1/2 the cost. It’s about finding fulfillment in photography. Different cameras fulfill different purposes.
