I was looking forward to this video for quite some time. Glad you enjoyed your time with the SL3 and put it through it paces. One of the few UA-camrs that actually uses the equipment for months before giving others his recommendation. I actually just got the SL3 this week and looking forward to putting it to good use. Starting off with the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 before getting an actual SL lens from Leica. Along with pairing it with my Voightlander M mount lenses.

Thanks for your observations. I haven’t been as in depth in my thinking in getting my SL3. I haven’t been as been a Leica M user for years and last year rationalised some of my less used Leica glass and some of my Fuji kit for the M11. That changed my photography completely! It rejuvenated my enthusiasm… so much in so many ways!! So when I fell upon the chance to aquire an ‘unused’ SL3 for a fraction of the price I jumped in both feet first! I have no other SL experience so here’s the thing, as a first time user of an SL it just works! It’s intuitive and exciting, easy to operate etc etc etc. I can’t be more pleased. My only issue is its weight but I knew that after all my remaining Fuji kit went in px. Simply the best … to plagiarise a well known song title. Thanks for the review 👍🏼

Would love to see Leica implement focus confirmation for manual focus lenses similar to the way Nikon does. This is particularly relevant to Leica as there is a large fan base using their M mount lenses on the L mount cameras.

The SL3 to The Olympics on the contrary. Let's not forget that the noisy iconic historical moments in history were captured by a Leica M. Where the fastest shutter speed in town would have fallen short 😅😂 I have seen some photographs of athletes competing and live concerts with such a composition, colors, atmosphere, bohkek, ART, I look at them like a painting or artwork in my favorite museums. The photographer is a different breed when commanding a Leica. Most people sadly don't even know anything about the camera, optics, brand, think only in specs that they don't even comprehend. They're is a lot of hate because they don't understand it, don't know it, never came close to one and mostly cannot afford it. Loved your review of the Q3 and SL2/S. Great photography, videos and channels 🎉🎉🎉

Thank you for your thorough review without hyperbole. As a long time Leica owner, I have thought about other brands because of the autofocus. For me, megapixel count is not the end all, but a luxury for when cropping is essential. I currently have the SL2 and your review has solidified my decision to upgrade as opposed to acquiring the Panasonic S5II or Fuji GFX 100s ii. I have a nice collection of SL, Leica and Zeiss M-mount and Sigma lenses and it would be heart-breaking to part with them as I plan to pass this system on to my young adult children who are discovering the world of photography. Leica indeed future proofs their camera and lenses.

The SL3 is not for me. In the past I could see a 601, SL2 or SL2s be an option. But in a world where I can buy a Nikon Z8 for 4500,- (4000,- with a rebate) the SL3 for almost 7000,- doesn't make sense to me. Yes, the APO crons are probably some of the best lenses in the world but the Nikon S primes are not that far behind either. And sure, the experience is nice but it's still a 5 year old Sony sensor and a first gen Lumix phase detection AF (and it shows). It's just so many downsides and not many redeeming qualities, sadly. And for me who also runs a Hasselblad system as the "refined" one, having a no compromise workhorse like the Z8 on the other side makes a lot of sense. Even the flash protocol is the matches.

Yo! "...a camera shaped pegged through an insecurity sized hole..."! I've never heard it said better! I do wish this had focus confirmation while manual focusing like the Z6III/Zf. With that said I haven't used one yet so focus peaking may be spot on. I'm thinking of adding to/switching from my M11. I wish they had left all the video features out. I will never use them and hate having to pay for them. I think the SL3 is actually a better body for using the M lenses than an M11 now.
However, after many years as a Leica shooter I have found that age, eyesight and the increases in resolution without IBIS etc has impacted my work with the M system. Regretfully I have to consider either the SL3 instead of the M11 or the Hasselblad X2D. I have chosen the Hasselblad because I do not need blistering AF, do not need video etc. What I need (or want, at least!) at this point in my 45 year long photography journey is colour. And nothing out there beats the X2D for that in my opinion (just mine - yours is allowed to be different!).
I'll miss the M system - I have used it on and off since the days of film - but now we have reached a point where (1) the M is constrained by being an M - fitting in modern stuff (because there would be an outcry if the basic body shape and size were altered significantly) is getting harder and harder and it's impacting reliability with also very very long repair times and (2) the M is becoming stratospherically expensive - an M11 now costs NZ$3,000 more than a Hasselblad X2D and an SL3 costs the same as an X2D.

Fantastic review. Whilst I’m in a position to sell everything and buy this camera I’m reserved. I love my OG R5 Canon but I do not like Canon RF lenses. The Sigma I series or the Leica F2 series primes are very appealing just like the 1.8 primes of Nikon.. maybe it’s why I really like Fujifilm.. their WR 1.4 primes are essentially L quality F2 primes if you’re picking up what I’m putting down.
I really look forward to seeing what LUMIX releases in the SL3 space. I think if I could be happy with a 24-105 type lens for my work I’d be happy to remain with Canon.
Thank you for being realistic with your iso usage because we’ve definitely been sucked into believing our cameras will work wonderfully at 12,800 and it’s complete BS.

I own a SL3 and Elmarit 24-70. I'm very happy with the image quality and as mentioned in the film, the bokeh and the sense of depth are absolutely incredible compared to other brands I've owned at 1.8.
I miss an exposure lock, which is not press and hold, completely incomprehensible that that function is not on a Leica.
The battery capacity could have been better. I have two batteries. The dummy battery seems like a good idea.
I would like to be able to lock the dials individually. It has happened several times that, for example, the aperture was changed unintentionally.
Now I lock them all at once and it works reasonably well.
The menus are in a class of their own, I don't think I've ever seen anything so good before.
Leica Photos is also the best I've ever used. My old Sony had the ambition, but the feature was practically useless.
If you buy a camera like this, you can count on upgrading your studio flashes to Profoto from, in my case, Godox if you want to use HSS. . Too bad Profoto doesn't make a Speedlight for Leica because I prefer to have all lights from the same manufacturer.
Good review, thanks for the good tips.

Factors like Feel, durability, user interface that you mention in the Competition section are all subjective.

Hi Gajan, the one review I was expecting for the SL3 since its launch 🙂 thank you once again for the great long-term review, and congrats for the amazing pictures you created out of this wonderful frozen trip ! 😄 About the camera, the only missing thing I think I would love to have your opinion on is a "comparison" with the M11 sensor (did you observe or feel any difference between the 2 60mpx sensors ?), and also with the SL2-S that I know you really enjoyed these last years both for photo but also video. At a time where we can find an SL2-S for 2,200 - 2,500 EUR/$, I wonder if for someone who will mainly shoot the SL with M lenses, the SL2-S might be a better value proposition, with great colors and DR, better high ISO performance etc.... Anyway, I guess the choice will be different for everyone's use cases 😀 Or maybe the SL3-S will be the perfect answer haha this never ends... but these cameras really are something different... something we can really understand when we fully commit shooting with for a good period of time. Too many people read a specs sheet and think they know a camera based on that. I think it is a shame, especially at a time where the shooting experience is becoming more and more one of the top key selling point for cameras... Anyway !
    Take care my friend 🙏

  • @definingslawek4731
    @definingslawek4731 4 місяці тому +1

I honestly think the inclusion of a low resolution viewfinder found in 2000 dollar cameras 5 years ago (Panasonic S1) confirms my impression of Leica as 'fake luxury.' At this price point it should at the very least match specs with its competitors. And it's not like this is some redundant specification that only nerds care about. The viewfinder is without a doubt the most important element to the experience of using this tool. If the brand supposedly cares so much about 'experience' and 'how you get there' they'd opt for the best EVF on the market.
Also how Leica sells their brand to cheap chinese smartphones lol.
love your content and your photography btw!

And what about the $6500 Sonys with horrible rear LCD display? Forget specs.. I own and use both and the VF in the SL3 is nicer than most in real life... the quality of the display speaks more than the spec sheet resolution. Its also made in EU and not China with some cheap plastic. More that just pixel count on the EVF is the magnification and glass that comes with it... this is something you are not considering. Own both and use them for 10,000 frames each and then comment.

Sorry, I disagree in many points. Having the SL, the SL2, and the SL3 from day one, I find the SL3 is a step back in many ways. It is much bulkier, the tilt screen is useless (has no portrait option), the new wheel is to loose (and who needs it anyway?) and those unreadable "Leicons" are ridiculous. This said, the new sensor (thank you Sony) is a little step forward especially when it comes to dynamic range and af. So if you have a SL2, it is only a small update (my SL2 never disappointed, I will keep it as a backup) PS sorry this was not intended as a response to your reply, but I don't want to retype everything

Leica feels a luxury product first, and incidentally a “professional” tool second. They would need to offer way more niche features, way more lenses, customisation, and something like that “Leica professional services” service like you mentioned.
It’s really not good enough for wildlife and sports photography - which arguably are the most demanding when it comes to all the technical stuff and having specialised lenses.
Sony Nikon and Canon have this area covered so well that I suppose this camera is more for all the slower stuff that don’t require super long lenses and insane speed.

@@GajanBalan yeah sorry I left that part out, they’re catering to a very specific niche. But on a purely functional level so do all of those other brands (fujifilm too). I guess leicas special sauce is in their more opinionated design language and intentionality

Skipping SL3 and M11. SL3-S and M12-S please : I can't help but feel the 60Mpixel sensor is just too much data, limiting the AF and burdening the processor frame rates as well as being worse for video. I can see the fit in your studio application and landscape photography, but for dynamic reportage Leica needs a complimentary model. Without the cost burden of the 60Mpixel sensor, running two bodies becomes manageable.

So is sl2s still better in video than Leica sl3?

    • @noenken
      @noenken 4 місяці тому

Very likely ... if you manually focus anyway. SL2s has a full sensor readout and downsample from 6k to 4k. It doesn't throw away photons like the high megapixel sensors by line skipping.

You have made (several times) a convincing case for why the SL3 is better than an SL2. But you make no mention of how the SL3 compares with the Sony A7R V that came out two years ago, with the same sensor and dynamic range, but with a far superior PD autofocusing system, far higher frame rate, 10 times more lenses that span a focal length range from 9mm to 1200mm (600x2), far better support for flash photography, far better videography, faster CPU, larger buffer, higher frame rate, and many other advantages, for half the price. What matters to photographers is not how the SL3 compares with an old 24MP camera that was obsolete four years ago, but how it compares competitively today with the leading cameras from other manufacturers.

Yeah, at least Leica has better EVF and display but that's about it. Not really worth the difference in cost. The brand costs more than the product in modern day Leicas.

As someone who owns both the A7RV and the SL3... your statement is one based on spec sheets... From real life use of both are some of my observations:
As for the SL3 and the A7RV
Sensors are very similar, but different colour renderings tweaked as per each brand specs.
Yes AF if better in the sony... but for most things you dont really need it.
Video is not better in the sony... only the AF... but actual video is very similar. Actually, the Leica has more video and cine options over the sony.
Functions, operation and ergonomics are better with the SL3... but that is to each their own.
I think we can all agree the user experience and menus are better in the SL3. Sony drives me mad with their menus. Why does it have to be so complicated.
Fact... Ibis is better in the SL3
Rear Screen is better in SL3
What you see in the EVF is also better in the SL3... less clutters and what not.
I agree, the E Mount has a vast selection of great lenses... but Leica glass is something fantastic and the main reason why I use Leica in the first place.
Both Sony and Leica have horrible rolling shutter.
Sony has a crop factor with active and dynamic video modes and increased crop factor with 50/60 FPS in 4K.
Shooting frame rate similar... splitting hairs here... neither are pro sports cameras.
The nice articulating screen mechanism on the Sony is great but is it starting to get a little flimsy with time... the Leica one is truly robust, but sadly doesn't tilt to a vertical position.
Sony is notorious for poor after sales and firmware updates.
      Leica is constantly updating.
SL3 has CFex B which is faster and less expensive than those darn CFexA cards.
SL3 is tested and rated for moisture and extreme temps.
I would say, other than an amazing AF system in the Sony... which not everyone needs... they are pretty much on par spec wise... with a user experience edge for Leica as well as DNG files that are incredible.
Oh... and battery life... very similar in my real world experience... BUT Sony batteries are indeed less expensive however, the quick change clip for the SL3 batteries (Q2 and Q3 SL2 same) is fantastic and I've become accustomed to it. It's higher end like the Hassy. When I change the Sony batteries.. .you have the little plastic door to open etc.
OH and before I forget, I wouldn't go so far as to say 24MP is obsolete. Sony a93 and Canon R1 are in the same price range as the SL3 and they carry 24mp sensors both released in 2024. Many working pros are fine with it.
      Have a great day.

I would love to see Leica improve the video aspects on the SL3. Have they released the native iso information for shooting in L-Log? I could be wrong, I thought Netflix certification requires OLPF which the SL3 doesn't have.

I simply dislike how there is no review out there, that simply says how bad the autofocus is. Are they all afraid to never get a Leica anymore, if they are honest?
I love my SL2-S, but I was really hoping for the SL3 to catch up to the competition and give a really good autofocus. Yet, it is not and it is disappointing. That’s not even measured at it‘s price point, just from a technical stand point and if Leica wants to give the best experience.

Leica's just do not have a very good AF system. All the reviewers of the Q3 and the SL3 try to dance around this issue, but, ... when you buy a Leica, just accept that the AF is the worst aspect of the Camera, and that really is inexcusable in '2024., especially at this price point.

Too many compromises with this body. Leica have a dilemma to deal with in their mirrorless lineup as I doubt sales are where they would want them to be. Drop the price a bit or keep it high to manage their branding and have it as a placeholder so they are visible as a player in the FF mirrorless market.

My freind went to those places 15 years ago with a Nicon of the time and he had pure whites with some sections having blue in them and the water was this rich blue! Way better than this lieca has done i am dissapointed!

I don’t know why you’re not at 100k yet; but until then I kind of like the exclusivity of being one of your long term subscribers.
