@@gfygfy9512 I have never looked into this but believe that adoption by Jewish couples is the same as in non-Jewish ones. I don't think it has to do with being Jewish or Christian or anything but more like a personal choice.

I will never forget your father!! Then I saw your father and he asked me how I was (with his big smile and blue sparkling eyes) and I responded exactly the same as I did with the first man and your father said to me, “OH THATS GREAT YOU SHOULD DO THAT MORE OFTEN ITS CATHARTIC!” I loved talking with your father we would crack up together. He signed my copy of the Bamboo Cradle something like “may you be blessed to handle life’s vicissitudes…” or something along those lines lol I had to look that word up! Unfortunately I don’t have all positive memories from my time at Neve but EVERY single interaction I had with your father was beaming with positivity, he was really an incredible human being and they were incredibly lucky to have him there. I met you there very briefly you stopped by to say hi to your father, you had maybe one baby maybe two, you wouldn’t remember because it was a split second and we barely smiled at each other before your father had to go. Rabbi Yaakov Levi and your father were my favorites! Anyway best of luck!

What a wonderful story. I feel the same about the IDF, hostages, the strong wives, and mothers. I dream of going to Israel some day.. Thank you Devorah..
Wonderful quite a happy ending to this family story
Wonderful!! Wow can't believe I just heard of this story! So so special!!! Apparently my uncle was the one who helped mekarev the family and devorahs conversion! They are the coolest ppl ever and should totally be interviewed
41:00 It's beautiful that her friends protected her emotionally from rude or annoying people. We all need friends like that.
I read the Bamboo Cradle when it just came out and re-read it a few times after that. So nice to see Devorah in life!!!
Do jewish people also adopt black children? Or is it always only east asian girls - without parents - who is worthy of being adopted by white and by jewish people?
I ask because I have never heard about jews adopting black children and when it comes to white people adopting international, less than 0,5% are black children and what 30+% are east asian "mostly" girls from South Korea, China, Vietnam etc?
Millions of black children are starving to death in Africa today. No child is starving to death in South Korea or Vietnam.. Millions of black children have no parents, live on the streets, or is worked to death in mines and waste grounds - often dying before reaching adulthood.
That is not the case in South Korea.. yes there is a waiting list for white parents to adopt from South Korea..
In China they are missing girls due to the noww outdated 'one-child-policy' and millions of chinese girls move to the West.. and yet there is still adopted more chinese children - by white parents, than from the whole of black Africa (like 40-45 countries!).
What evil evil world this is.
@@gfygfy9512 I have never looked into this but believe that adoption by Jewish couples is the same as in non-Jewish ones. I don't think it has to do with being Jewish or Christian or anything but more like a personal choice.
@@RDR18851
Maybe, but if it's out of this world for someone to adopt a black child, but not an asian child, you simply shouldn't be allowed to adopt a child.
People aren't shopping for a new car or sofa, it's a child.
We would also think it was morally wrong for a couple to have a foster aborted just because it's skin color wasn't dark or light enough.
@@gfygfy9512 Just for most people knowledge. Child is not toy.
Adapting people don't have choice first come first to serve.
Baby people adopting can be white/black Asian/European you don't have option to choose.😮😮😮😊😊😊
@gfygfy9512 You asked this in another place. Jews are all colors. Yes, some white Jews adopt black children. It's not the predominant practice. Adoption agencies try to place children in same race homes, too, you realize.
My father was adopted in 1931. Bless his birth mother for giving my grandparents a child!
Wonderful! I am a B'nai Noah and just loved Devorah's story about her family it was not just wonderful but such a beautiful family. Thank you for having her on your show. G-d Bless.
Great interview! Brings back memories of the summer of 1988 when I went on a post high school graduation trip to Israel. Devorah’s Dad A”H spoke to our group and I read the Bamboo Cradle. I was so in awe and inspired by Devorah and her family. With all my own insecurities at the time, it never occurred to me how hard the struggle would be to be an Asian Bais Yaakov girl in Israel.

@@gfygfy9512 I happen to know of multiple Jews who adopted black children. One of whom often gets the side eye from black women presumably for the great sin of raising a black child.
@@gfygfy9512I have a couple of frum friends who have adopted black children, including one who has adopted 3 black children.

OMG I Loved that book since I read it and was fascinated at age 12...that was many moons ago.Feeling so privileged to see this amazing lady speak! Thank you-what an incredible idea to interview her.
How great is the love of our Almighty Creator, who watches on every little one with tender care and a sense of destiny! Sending blessings & love from France.
Wonderful! I read her father's, a"h ,book after it was published. It was unforgettable. This was such a lovely, inspirational interview that followed up on Devorah's life journey . May Hashem continue to bless her and her family. Am Yisrael Chai!
What an incredible episode! I loved every minute of it!
Amazing story. I read her book and was so inspired by Devorah. My married daughter moved to Baltimore last year. Nice to know that there are amazing people like her in Baltimore community. Thank you for your terrific podcast.
SO many people around the planet have been influenced by your dear, holy father's wonderful book. You are an INCREDIBLE FAMILY full of a TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF MERIT from good decisions & good actions!!!
Such an inspiring speaker, one of my favorite interviews yet! There's so much I'm taking with me from this interview. Thank you.
Thank you for the sequel to Bamboo Cradle lol. We are proud to have you as part of the Bais Yaakov family and Baltimore community!
My parents aslo made aliyah in the 80's and we lived next to the Schwartzbaums in Bayit vegan, they are/were such special people, as ncie as can be, so normal and humble, real greatness
What a tremendous person! And her parents too!
I always try to think of ways to make living a Torah life exciting for my kid. I am really inspired by the story of her father buying her candy and what an impact that may have had on her loving shabbos. I decided I want to iy”H let my kid choose a nosh every Sunday ( or Wednesday if Sunday is too long for him:) ) to save for shabbos. I would love if he looks forward to it the same way Devorah did and does.
Thank you for amazing content!
Wonderful. Amazing story. Gods love, peace and kindness on you and the guest.
I grew up watching so many camp and school performances about the Bamboo Cradle, and to see it come to life in this unbelievable interview is literally transformative for me.
Mrs. Goldstein is such an inspiration and I have learned to value my own Yiddishkeit even more!
Thank you so much for this incredible episode!
Wonderful !!! It is 1 41 am in the Caribbean, I just had to watch this out. You had me on the edge of my chair. It was thrilling and I definitely connectted with this episode. Your professionalism is great. Love the fact that HaShem is the Master of the Universe and nothing happens or comes into our lives unless HaShem allows it. Many blessing upon both of you from Trinidad.

@@gfygfy9512 Adopting a child is serious business and there are serveral things to consider by a desiring couple. I am sorry to hear your statistics. Children come in all shape and sizes, likewise Jews so there is no room for discrimation or racism in Judaism.
@@StarvrosMitchell
Agree, but racism has no business in int. adoption. I like jews and Israel and I support them fully in this difficult time!
Therefore I was in chock to see, if jews in and outside Israel did the same racist picking as a majority of white parents in the West do or not..
@@gfygfy9512, every child will have the same opportunity regardless.
In usa, I know less religious jewish people that adopted black kids and special needs kids
Every countrr has their own rules about adopting kids to usa. Some require you live in that country for a time period before a adopting. Some countries want a donation that not everyone is able to give. Some countries won't let usa adopt their kids.
Foreign Adoption is not as easy as domestic adoption.
Beautiful interview! She is MAGNETIC! Toda raba.
Just read this book over Pesach and LOVED IT!! Loved the interview
She was and is so beautiful! Anyone who has ever taken care of a kid knows that the person who raises someone is the “real mother” ❤
The story of the Bamboo Cradle was so inspiring to my mom, that she named my twin sister, Devorah
Wonderful program!
Wonderful interview with Devorah, so inspiring and great experience growing up as a Chinese girl among Jewish frum girls, it wasn’t easy, I felt for you.
So beautiful how you arose from the situation and made your life beautiful BH.
Was heartwarming to hear about your dear parents.
Yisar Koach ❤
The bamboo cradle! The legend! I inherited the book from my mom. So amazing to actually see the main character!
Reiki practitioner here, not Jewish also. I wanted to leave a comment as means of testimony, I am so grateful for this channel but more specifically this episode coming into my awareness.
When she describes the Mother of All giving her a hug.
I have felt that in meditation when I have connected to Mother Earth and most recently Quan/Kaun Yin.
We are so blessed in our lives. Thank you
Wonderful! I enjoyed every second of this interview. This is exactly what my neshama needed to hear. Thank you.
Wonderful!! Devorah is an inspiration!!! Such a beautiful neshama.
What an incredible story!
This was a wonderful episode. Thank you!
I could have listened to her story all day. The bamboo cradle was the first Jewish novel I truly enjoyed.
I was wondering, what’s her husbands story? How’d she wind up living in America? Have her back on for part 2!! Tysm!
I don't think it's a novel
her husband was a regular young Israel type, who became more yeshivish
Devorah, you are incredible! I love that you had pictures when you told your story! Your story was Incredible! I heard you speak many years ago in Maalot Baltimore. I was so inspired then and I am inspired now! Thank you for having her on! It really was wonderful!
Wonderful! I met devora in camp agudah Midwest in 1988! The bamboo cradle is one of my favorite books! From one devora to another….
The Bamboo Cradle and All for the Boss were books that were/are inspirational to me from the first second that I ever opened them!
To hear Dvora talking about her life, her parents journey and all of their lives from the daughter's perspective, is/was very eye-opening to hear.
Mikimi in Tzfat
Wonderful! I read The Bamboo Cradle recently and it was really nice hearing it from Mrs. Devorah's perspective too!!!! I am an orthodox Jew and my older sister is actually adopted too! My parents adopted her from Russia and I know my mother really enjoyed reading The Bamboo Cradle!!
I am 77 years old and a member of the LDS faith. I also have 5 handsome sons and 2 beautiful daughters. I loved hearing your wonderful, inspiring words. I want you to know that my husband and I support Israel. I am so thankful your family is being raised to honor our Father in Heaven ( I don’t know if you say the name…) and raised with good values and deep love. That is what will heal the world.
Wonderful, I had cousins in Richmond Va. This was a very heartwarming inspirational interview.
Devora! So good to see you and hear the story from your mouth. You are such a crack up! I loved seeing the photos of your kids and grandkids. I have the BEST memories of your dad a"h and whenever I run in to your mom it feels like going "home". Transports me right back to Rechov Uziel. Sending you massive hugs. Dena (Maisel) And thanks to Living Lechaim for bringing us the most awesome interviews!!
Beautiful story kol hakavod.. wish I can meet devorah and her family. So impressed. Ty for sharing
What a fantastic story teller. I was hooked from the first minute.
Thank you both! It is wonderful! I read Bamboo Cradle years ago, after I had converted to Judaism, and found it so inspiring. I always wondered what happened to her, and it is so beautiful and inspiring to hear her story from her directly. My daughter and son-in-law Heaven bless them adopted a little new born Latina girl (i am Latina as is my daughter, her husband is Anglo-American), and they love her so much, and so do I. She brings us such joy and I tell her she is a bracha that Heaven sent us Baruch Hashem.
This interview was so much fun to listen to. This woman can talk about paint drying and it would draw me in. Nevertheless, what a wonderful inspiring story.
1:05:- Thank you for sharing your Erev Shabbas challenges. Mine changed in an instant when our beloved bas bayis died during her first year of marriage. She loved Shabbas so much, I knew I had to honor her memory by changing how we experience Erev Shabbas. Now Erev Shabbas is a calmer, happier time.
Omg! My favorite book growing up and becoming frum, in Kiev Ukraine was bamboo cradle
Beautiful soup and heart warming interview
Wonderful!! I read that book as a teenager!!! Devorah you're amazing!! ❤️
Dvora Sarah is amazing woman. Thank you for sharing your story with us.
Wonderful. Read the nook as a young girl always remembered it. Lovely to see Devora today. Sad to hear about her Dad על"ש.
Very inspiring interview.
Wonderful! Enjoyed very much
Shalom Devorah! Your speech was very powerful and made me cry several times.
I am also struggling with lighting Shabbat candles on time and planning to light 10 min early after Roshah Shanah. Thank you!!!❤
I lived in Israel for a year.
Israeli society is very different from American society. Americans will refrain from saying anything too intrusive or prejudiced whereas Israelis dont self-censor.
(Although on the Internet, Americans have no problem being vulgar, stupid, idiotic, hateful, or crazy).
I guess they are venting fo some reason, not everyone can keep it cool, I specifically suffer a condition as well dat may me seem scary but trust me I'm no crook..
Wonderful episode, I remember her father, he stayed with us when he came to South Africa 30 years ago. His book introduced me to the world of memoirs which are so inspiring and I have and have read so many since
Wonderful! Read the book many times growing up, so thankful for this interview
Just wanted to say that I don't think Devora's dad had a choice about taking her in the train station , because she was such an adorable baby. I am Israeli , secular. I really liked the book "The Bamboo cradle" ,and having been an outsider at school- I could really feel for Devora. Her diary at the end of the book brought me to tears. How wonderful it is that Am Israel is so diverse. Dvora , you are beautiful inside and out.
Wonderfully inspirational!!! Yishar Kocheich! B’rucha t’hee! May you continue to inspire others in Ahavas HaShem. May it serve as a zechus for your family and an aliyah for your dear father’s neshama.
Devorah was in my class in Yerushalayim during the year they lived in israel.. she is so beautiful and amazing! I also love her parents.. very inspiring!!!
Devorah have you ever thought of doing genetic testing
Devorah said her son had a DNA test
The Bamboo Cradle! I remember when this happened and when the book came out.
I was a shabbos regular by the Shwartzbaums, and although it’s great to see how Devora has grown, it saddens me that they left Eretz Yisrael. I hope they return soon!
I was not aware of Devorah's story/The Bamboo Cradle. I so enjoyed this interview and hearing her story. Devorah herself is such an endearing person. Thank you for this interview.
I remember you Devorah and your family from my childhood in Bayit Vegan. My first book report was written on the book your Dad wrote about your story. Loved this podcast!
I could listen to Devorah for hours. What an inspiration .

Agreed! She is gifted with tremendous חן. What a personality! What a person!
Wonderful! I loved this episode. Devorah is so genuine and so holy. Thank you
❤ great show. Happy day everyone ❤
Wow!
I read the Bamboo Cradle in the 1980's. It was such a powerful book. I repeated the story to many people over the years.
סיפור מדהים. אני זוכרת שקראתי את הספר "עריסת הבמבוק" שאבא שלה כתב ותורגם לעברית. קראתי אותו כמה פעמים. אין מילים. תודה רבה!
What an amazing and wonderful story. I loved every minute of Devorah's amazing personality. Her parents must also be wonderful.
Wonderful! Amazing story. Devora is such a bubly pleasant person and her life is beyond inspiring. Thank you!
I will never forget your father!! When I was in Neve, one day I had a rough morning and I saw another employee and he asked me how I was and I said, “well I spent the morning crying but other than that I’m great.” That man said, “oh that’s not good…crying shows an inability to deal with life…” I walked away feeling terrible.
Wonderful
Wonderful!! wow what a life story so inspiring
Wow I remember this story from when I was a teenager am now in 50s.
Wonderful what a story!!! Gives me hope !!
Thank you (Camp Simcha hero) Yaakov! The love that she and her parents exude resonates with me as new dad. I wonder if my daughter will feel like her mother felt as she also has many frum close relatives. My family also suffered racism/bullying in Beis Yaakov JLM being Mizrachi. They also went to Beit Yaackov Hayashan but would have been a few years younger than Devorah.
I was zoche to spend Shabbos at the Schwartzbaum's. Such a nice family and warm atmosphere! I was also zoche to meet her husband outside Rebbetzin Shain's building (only he knows what I'm talking about). They should be zoche to many Brachos and simchas!
אמן, כן יהי רצון....
I married a Chinese girl fifty years ago and we raised Chewish children. It is wonderful to learn about the wonderful path of Devorah.
