- Finally after years of waiting we have a rather large box full of treasure arrive! The suspense builds during this episode while Matt waits Iefkes arrival so they can break open the box!
Matt gets into some changes below decks which involves a bit of noise but no more head aches!
Plus we give a little tour of our new work bench above Tarkine which doubles as a safety rail.

What a good and committed man you are, you gave your word, looked at it all day and still never touched it!!! What a special walk down memory lane, all the things you’ve chosen way back when, very cool things! Was that an old anchor winch? Now that’s one beauty, all mechanical and will never fail, give you a good hard workout too! I think that’s great that you’ve given guests and yourselves another 4 inches of space before you hit your heads, I’m also sure you’ll make into a feature, like caution yellow with black stripes! Well, it was heartening news by your shipper (Damon) of the 'Treasure Chest' of tricks in your latest episode, I know Damon from my trips to Denmark over a number of years, last met up with Damon in UK in 2023. He is a resourceful chap..! I enjoy your project, follow from its beginning and how you had dealt with the many decisions in building such a nice craft. Being an apprentice boat builder from the 60's/70's - I recall the many issues I came across, I did a spell in building GRP Boats at Halmatics - based in south of Hampshire, England, my 1st intro into GRP was building my own Kayak in 1965. Had since hoped into mechanical side of things but that's another storey eh. Did a lot of sailing in years past as a Skipper but my 'pins' aren't as good these days. Keep up the great work guys, glad to see 'safety rails' employed. PD (Doug)
There's something magic about watching you guys tackle this massive project and slowly make headway with each video. I imagine it can't be all sunshine and rainbows but you are making it happen! Inspiring guys. And the fact you're in Aus makes it more relatable (to me anyway). Can't wait to see Tarkine on the water one day.

At a marina in Sausalito, CA we dumpster-dived a dumpster regularly. In it we found a LOT of bronze, we found perfectly good instruments, shackles...on and on.

A floating workbench and safety railing. Such a novel concept and timer saver. Great goodies in the treasure chest collection. Thanks for the tit bit of history. Shorter visitors may just miss the low beam. Maybe a different color, signage, padding. Success on your outreach.
Yep, cant beat a good workbench! always need more flat space to dump stuff haha shorter people do walk under with ease! its the ones who get distracted or try and turn around while under the deck beams that get hurt. Some good ideas! cheers
Looking better every video posting. I love the modification of the overhead bam especially for tall folks and I am 6’ 3” tall, so would probably hit my head on the first construction of the beam on a regular basis. Wow, that chest was full ofall kinds of goodies for your boat.

Two things about low over heads: contrasting colors for the obstacle and a line directly below on the deck. Most people who hit their heads are looking where their feet are not where their heads are.

Both my parents are gone now, but they lived aboard a sailboat for over ten years. My dad built the second one they lived on and named after my mom. I have been sailing since I was 6 years old. It’s my happy place. Great work and I love watching!

Like your project more every week. The way you both manage to do this on your own way. The unpacking really looked like Chrismas or as we say “Sinterklaasavond”. It is also nice to learn more about the boatbuilding wood you use downunder. Before I looked your video’s never heard off selerytop, Tasmanian oak or some othernames you have used. You really bring joy with these stories.
Good job on the enlarged opening.
To save even experienced crew in rough weather, I would also seriously consider some high density padding.

Love the blocks of the highest quality. Some of the bronze stuff looks ancient and clunky and it's OK with me if you don't add a big heavy windlass to the foredeck. My thought is put some padding on that deck beam, it will always be an issue. (Even for you guys that are used to it.) The boat is turning out beautifully!

Obie showed great interest in the content of Pandora's Box. Which, unlike the one in Greek myhtology, had loads of goodies from Holland in it. I think Obie would like to be bilingual. Rather easy to teach him that as the Dutch "Woef" and the English "Woof" are phonetically almost identical. And heads up for you guys and heads down leaving the cabin to the bow.

Have you considered rounding the big deck beams and covering them with carpet? I know that if I was going to bonk my head against something, I would rather bonk it against carpet than solid wood with square edges. Your boat is looking magnificent!

Yeah it wasnt something we really wanted to do but had to be done, we can always glue some wood back there if we don't like it hahah
After you cut that away, maybe a leather cushion strip with the upholstery tacks tacked on?? On my last boat had a killer dodger edge...involved blood numerous times. Nice playful video. You will probably, 20 years from now, come back and open up the treasure you left behind. In my case I payed for storage so 1000's of dollars over the years. Most of it went into the bin at the storage place. Memories keep, cool toasters don't.
Man if I knew the treasures in that box I would have kept it. You should know not to trust mainland Australians. This time you got lucky. Beautiful and gorgeous bling❤

And if our schedule allowed, we'd love to come lend a hand, but we're about to start our sailing charter season. Yes, there's still a lot on the list to do, but you're much closer than you realize.

What I use to do in similar issues like these beams is to start at both ends with a hole-saw. So, it keeps the strengt of the beam and you'll be to continue with any (machine)tool you like, seeing what you're doing.
What we do at offshore installations (oil/gas) is putting up warning signs instructing you to watch your head and install "cushion materials", but I guess that's not what you want in beautiful ship.

I had seen photo’s of the box before, but thought it was about 50x30x60 cm. But it is actually HUGE 😊. And those blocks look so awesome. Loved the video again. Not sure about the aperture in the deck beams, but I understand you don’t want people to hit their head on it.
Hahaha yes its rather large! Looking forward to getting the blocks up in the rigging! Yeah it was sad about the deckbeam, but the beauty of wood is that we can scarf a piece back together and nobody would know! we are just letting it sit for now and see if we like it.

Head room is not only a comfort issue. It could be an imperative in running seaward. Your consideration of others should be commended. Your going to have guess aboard, heads up!
Yes true! as i mentioned, one working or living aboard you get use to it but its the new comers who sometimes hit their head.

Had the same problem.. hung a very small little tinke-bell, ca. 4 inches in front of the beam, and flush with the underside of the beam. Somehow guests notice the small bell (visually) earlier than the massive beam. If not..they get an audible warning..hopefully just in time for them to stop short of a collision.

Love this channel! About the DECK BEAM: why not fix a soft or rubbery layer? I reckon people will still be hitting their heads.
Yep, sometime the only way to rectify things is just remove the human error but unfortunately we cant do that.. So yes maybe some padding with come into play.
Make a soft postering around de deckbeams end the problem is over🤗
On my Sail Boat i have by rounding over the corner with a half inch router bit, it softens the blow and i also have installed a soft leather strip on the edge,even making head contact with the two additions, its not too bad when it occurs with a guest.
I also think some padding might be called for, or even fill that cutout space with some dense foam you could paint to match and maintain the line of the rest of the beam. How? No idea.

Your choice- Immigration isn't far off since there was room enough for a living something...My dream idea would have been- a cache of rare endangered rain forest species parrots to parade about the build shed.
I'm sure the chickens believe they, in fact, are a rare and beautiful parrot spieces when they parade around the shed ;)
