A boat by the river
Приєднався 21 сер 2022
We are following our dreams to build a 40ft pilot cutter inspired wooden boat.
Two years into the build we decided it was time to start sharing our journey with you all!
“Tarkine” is built from sustainably sourced Tasmanian Timbers, she is cold moulded and will displace 16ton when she kisses the water.
For the majority of the time it has been the two of us and our faithful dog Obie. We hope to get Tarkine floating and sail to Iefke’s home waters of the Netherlands, got to dream big!
Sit back and enjoy the adventure.
To help support and get involved we have a few different links below, check them out!

50th Episode building our 40ft wooden sailing boat! Finishing the sliding hatch and painting (EP50)
Episode 50! How time flies... We have now been publishing videos for over 2 years now and we can't thank you all enough for your support!
In this special episode we get our main companionway hatch glued down and Matt makes the hatch slide with ease, a very satisfying moment as this hatch has been months of planning and building to get to this moment.
Iefke gets busy with painting the cabin sides a special colour, this is a trial for whether we like this choice and it can always be painted over but please let us know your thoughts!

Oh thanks Graham! Very kind of you to say so, much appreciated! Cheers

Are you going to cover the hull in fiberglass? I imagine the external ballast will be added much later. Lovely shipwright carpentry!
Yep that’s the plan! Lead is the last thing, we are basically wrapping the whole boat in fibreglass
Greetings from South Carolina. I'm 81, in good enough health to think that I could start building a boat and live long enough to sail it. I've watched Leo building Tally Ho from the date of purchase and have binge watched your build of Tarkine and am up to date. I have all the tools capable of handling and shaping large pieces of timber and decent wood working skills. I also have a very cute GoldenDoodle puppy that appears to be a necessity for filming. The only thing I don't have and not likely to acquire is the head of hair that Matt and Leo flaunt. Is the hair that important?
That awesome the hatch is beautiful!! The color on the cabin is so nice, Roll and tip :)
Big fan of the beamy low freeboard hull shapes and so at the nose and the apparent shape there that boat should do very well in a big water following seas situation.
Top job guys, she will be a solid beauty, and the little personal touches really make her. All the best to you both
Thankyou! Much appreciated. She will be a beauty!
Oh we could tell how happy you were, if I wasn’t watching a guy standing on a boat sliding a hatch cover I might of thought it was a guy doing something else Lol
Just amazing work ! 👍Graham
More impressive work for me to take in , a great team you guys , love watching your progress. Graham L
Beautifully built boat, I’m new here, so just going through the videos to catch up, just an amazing talent you both have . Graham L
Very nice work
Thankyou!! So far so good!
The level of craftsmanship is extraordinary. Not one mistake in 50 episodes! Incredible. Can't wait to see her sail in 2030.
Only just came across your video , what a lovely boat you’re making super quality and very impressive, well your skill and knowledge has certainly impressed me , love it when young people take on a labour of love in this way , well done , can’t wait for the next instalment, 👍Graham L
Hey Graham, so glad you found us and you’re enjoying our journey of building a boat! Cheers
I love the affection you show to your 4-legged family member.
Hahaha yes he’s our little man! No kids so he is our furry child
You pair of gifted talented young lovers bring a tear to this old boat builders eyes. May you both enjoy an ever lasting lifetime of sailing adventures in Tarkine for ever. Cheers.
Thankyou Peter! Much appreciated!
a wonderful episode.
Oh well amazing to hear that! Thankyou
Another great video...I am curious where you're going to hide out in a storm. Are you going to do a dodger?
Yeah… a dodger will come one day but for now it’ll be the hatch and wet weather gear! Haha
I really like the color!
Thanks! We are glad
Great video. The hatch is coming along great. I'm definitely going to be using the glued down wood planking method on my cabin top.
Cheers! Yeah it’s a good system!
I like the design ideas and thought you put into the project. That’s a what makes these videos interesting for me. The hatch is very neat . Good job.
Oh that’s good to hear, glad you like our thought process! Cheers!
That hatch turned out beautifully, good idea to paint and live with it for awhile. That Obie, no the blanket will not do when you’re talking to a ghost little black box, scary, off to my little safe, comfy bed!!!
Hahaha yeah Obie loves his little nest up the front!
Tally Ho has it's place but these two boat builders are on a completely different level. (a much better place, in my humble opinion) Great music choice in this episode, by the way!!!
Oh wow very kind of you to say! Thankyou!
... and in twenty years it'll be fun to go back and watch young Matt and Lefke...
Yes very true! That’ll be a heap of fun!
Hi Guys, awesome work as usual. You keep me motivated on my build. We need your dog.. Maple could do with some wise older dog influence right now. LOL Cheers, Steve and Maple (the PUPPY stage) Ahrrrr LOL
Ah cheers Steve! Maple will get use to it! Puppy stage is a lot, but they do wise up in a year or two as you know haha
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River Let me know if you guys would like a link to some demo tracks. Cheers.
Those chickens were way too young to hatch anything. Just as well you got inspiration elsewhere…..Bud McIntosh, Fred Bingham, Mate, Casey???? I really like How to build a wooden boat by Bud McIntosh and Fred Bingham’s Boat Joinery. Great job on the hatch it is looking very swish😍
Thanks Damon! All great reads yes, just pick the bits you like best for your boat!
Ditto...once again to the positive comments!
Nice job. I like the colour too.
Thank you! Cheers!
once again, ditto to all of the positive comments from South Carolina.
Thanks Gus! Welcome aboard! Cheers
Greetings from South Carolina. Ditto...to the positive comments.

So Matt is a leftie. Understandable. Lefties are creative by nature - and we also live in our right minds
Hahaha yeah love being a leftie!

THIS IS @ AUSTRALIA YOU!! BLOODY BUTIES😃
Good size vise for on board workbench.
Yeah it’s a great versatile vice! Very handy
If it's beautiful, it will last for sure
Ah thankyou!!
Downloaded a bunch of these episodes to watch in the middle of the night whilst sailing to the Whitsundays. Now I’m addicted. Great show.
Oh great idea! Glad you thought ahead and are enjoying them! Cheers
looking good! You might want to consider adding some knees on the tall end of the longitudinal hatch pieces you just installed. They could also act as strong grab handles on the outside.
Oh yes good idea!
nutcracker was hilarious
Yeah it made us laugh also!
Every week I love watching You Two work together.
Aw thanks!
as always, 5 stars!!!
Amazing!!! Thankyou
She's looking beautiful.

Iefke doing stuff and Matt looking at things at the beginning made my day 😂
