This is so interesting. I listen to the podcast ‘Was I in a Cult?’ and there were two episodes on there about three different women who were all part of the same acting class/school in California. Long story short, they were all verbally abused by the teacher of the school, who tried to pass herself off as a guru that could bring out their potential as long as they did what she wanted. These women were constantly manipulated into giving money, going on trips with, and giving free massages to this said teacher. They all realized her cultish behavior later on and lived to tell their experiences. I never knew acting classes being cultish were a thing until just recently. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Christy.

Yeah I never knew this was a thing! I never honestly even thought about alot of acting teachers preying on students for sexual reasons. I feel like that sounds stupid, because predators are everywhere, but its interesting to really sit down and think about it; like "woah, how many children/young adults are going to acting classes everyday, and are being manipulated in some way to later be preyed on in some way, whether it's sexual or not?"

@@Khous-yg1ur there was this camera class at a college I took and the teacher made every single scene sexual no matter how the script was written “this character is upset because she wants sex” “what’s the characters motivation class? ...They want to get laid” 🤢 It’s a huge understatement to say I was creeped out at the way he looked at me too! ... He made every classmate more than uncomfortable, made people cry, and said it was “the process” thank god I knew better because this wasn’t my first rodeo, but I remember trying to report him to the school board, but it turns out he was the head of the department... (He also had a weirdly strict rule about no cameras or recorders & at first I thought it was for the privacy of the students & feeling safe to explore, but turns out it’s so no one could gather proof of what a piece of 💩 he was) I left after 2 classes and even received a extremely creepy email begging me to consider coming back to class because “I have so much potential and was going to waste it” 🙄... I wish I’d thought about going in “undercover” to secretly recording the class & to go to the higher ups, but the school loved him. I’ve been so wary about LA classes and I’m so glad I found this video because everything she’s said is beyond validating my choices to forgo a lot of them! (Sorry for ranting!!😬)

I went through years and years of therapy and hard individual acting work with an amazing mentor to finally be back in a place that I can believe I can be/I am a legit hard working actor. ugh i know EXACTLY what you're talking about - i went to an acting school in Sydney Australia, and I couldn't believe how abusive and manipulative it was. the worst part, was that people felt they couldn't expose the place (online or elsewhere), because the industry is so tiny and incestuous that they'd risk ruining any chance they had with connections etc.
the imbalance of power is really disgusting and allows for a lot of shady shit to go on. thankfully i was already an adult and recognized that these people worked for me, and had no right to disrespect me. But the whole experience felt detrimental to acting itself, and put me off classes altogether. i'll find any other way than put myself through that again.

Thank you so much for addressing this Christy! I recently graduated from a well-known drama program at a university in NYC where 3 professors were fired due to having sexual relationships with students. They also encouraged students to have relationships (romantic and sexual) with one another, which was honestly so bizarre to me considering that would be unwise professional conduct on any set. Also, if you have morals or set boundaries in some of these classes, you're looked down upon and they immediately will tell you you don't have the makings to be an artist. This doesn't surprise me at all, since so much of acting school is either tearing you down (I've literally had a professor throw a soccer ball at me during a scene, unprompted) or trying to grow you as a human being but only in the direction THEY believe you should grow. Overall, I did enjoy the program but this was one of the biggest red flags about the industry that I had witnessed.

I’ve never thought of acting classes in LA as a cult, but I feel like that is a great description! I only lived in LA for a short time as an actor, but it definitely felt like you had to join a class and stay with it forever, act in whatever way they deem best, and if you try to leave they tell you that you’re nothing and you’ll never go anywhere if you don’t stay with their acting school.

Your discussion of the acting class issues makes me so grateful for the teacher that I take acting classes with. Not in LA, but it's in a large acting market, and she steadfastly believes that you can be successful 1) with primarily positive reinforcement and 2) WITHOUT delving into deep traumas in a very overly vulnerable, traumatizing way. It's like you said, I've fallen in love with acting because of that class. If I had encountered classes like you describe I would have quit acting before I even began.

    • @justathumb

Yes!!! Red flag when acting teachers act as if they are a therapist! You’re not suppose to be ripped open to “perform”. Trained therapist don’t even do that with patients in actual therapy🤦‍♀️This is why I personally stay away from any teachers obsessed with Lee Strasberg. Honestly, I’d much rather study on my own, read, and devour Uta Hagen. I’ve always been so picky with classes & the industry. Sometimes I wonder if I’ve made a bad choice to pass up certain opportunities in the business, but after watching this video I’m so glad I’ve only gone with my gut instinct when it comes to this world. I'm commenting before the premiere. I'm wondering if you're going to refer to NXIVM. Just finished watching a movie about it and I can see how they lured people in. In my early 20's, I was lost and had no sense of belonging and looked desperately to find a community to fit in. I could have joined a cult too. But it surprises me that celebrities could get lured in because they always give off this facade that they're confident in who they are and know exactly what they're doing. But I guess we're all human and susceptible to just about anything. Can't wait to hear what you have to say.

I also wanted to note that I lived in LA for years as a SoCal native. Everyone’s experience will greatly vary depending on your industry and crowd. For example, I had nothing to do with the entertainment industry and I wasn’t in a cutthroat industry. It's a dark and dangerous path and I think young women would actually listen to you... Just a suggestion.

It’s not just acting or the marines. I went to an art college for 3 years to study animation, and one of the teachers, I won’t say his name, but he had a reputation for tearing people down. Rumor had it he made a female student cry after critiquing her project, claiming she was getting ahead of herself. Now I don’t know what class it was for, or what the project was, but I know I wasn’t in it. Also, critiques were a big part of that place, no matter what the program was. Animation, Graphic Design, Culinary, even Interiors and fashion.

"The nature of psychological compulsion is such that those who act under constraint remain under the impression that they are acting on their own initiative. The victim of mind-manipulation does not know that he is a victim. To him the walls of his prison are invisible, and he believes himself to be free. That he is not free is apparent only to other people. His servitude is strictly objective."
    -Aldous Huxley
A cult is like invisible trap you may not see yourself being trapped in it, but it makes you feel like you are trapped. It is a prison you can't escape. It traps you into this psychosis of extremism and warps your mind of ideological brainwashing that the faults are on yours and yours only. It breaks of the free will of one's mind, physiologically and mentally, and entrap their subconscious in to a imaginary box of limbo and darkness.

Scientology: I remember years ago they had their entertainment center rented out by a fashion organization for a modeling show, and I went to go film it. Everything seemed normal until midway thru, when a lady came out on stage and said, "Before we continue the show, check out this quick video." From there, a video montage of people doing various things was shown while a voice over played, talking about seemingly positive things like "be your best self" and "this world is yours for the taking," stuff like that. After the video, someone came out and said "all the words in the voice over were written by L. Ron Hubbard, and if you'd like more info on joining the..." and I thought to myself "OH MY GOD, THEY'RE TRYING TO RECRUIT US IN THE MIDDLE OF A FASHION SHOW!!! Really odd...

Thanks for being so upfront about your experiences Christy, Idk if you've had a chance to watch Leah Remini's show about Scientology but it's very informative and honestly a powerful watch. Hope sometime you get around to checking it out. Its on Netflix and Discovery + . These kinds of cons and elaborate mind games are sick and dangerous, and people need to know about them. It's sad because these people start off in a good place wanting to better their lives and find a place for themselves and the fact that people prey on that is so wrong. Hope you're well!

  • @HaleyMary
    @HaleyMary 2 роки тому +4

Wow! I'm shocked that you almost joined a cult. You seem so grounded, I would never picture you getting close to joining.
That's really sad that people know one another more on social media, but not in real life. During the pandemic, it seems like the world is starting to live like that. Other than working in the store and going to an open mic once a month, I don't have many conversations face to face these days.
Being propositioned by a teacher sounds so creepy. What about the safety for students? Wasn't there a union or something?

I have very little respect for most Hollywood actors. Mainly because they sit there in their fancy houses with their fancy cars, sitting on their high horse preaching to me about politics, calling my people white trash and worthless. Like when I hear someone is an actor, I automatically assume they are a POS hippocrite. Now obviously not all actors are that way but enough of them are that it warrants a ton of skepticism from me and it takes a lot to win my trust. I trust you, I've loved your acting credits and you just seem so genuine and kind and our world needs more of that.
