Arbor Low Stone Circle - A Compositional Challenge

Arbor Low is an amazing monument of the Bronze Age, a stone circle, weather beaten and ravaged by time. It is one of the many enigmatic arrangements of stone pillars in the Peak and as with most you will find it amid stunning countryside. However, these stones have not been hoisted back into their original position. Instead they lie flat and surrounded by a steep embankment.
Is it possible to make a good composition from them?

For me my ground shots just did not work, but the drone did good despite the windy conditions. A great mini vlog m8.

Stone circles can be problematic... but where possible-- standing WELL away (100-200yds) from a slightly elevated position and zooming in can create a nice perspective- assuming you want the whole circle ! Shooting wide open and isolating stones from one another can be striking also...

Absolutely, my drone shots of most Stone Circles really sell the scene, but with a camera and with my feet firmly plonked on the ground I find I am VERY reliant on a good weather environment to really produce something for the portfolio.
Always great to visit them though.

Ive planned many occasions to visit here but like you said, drone shots are what you want. Except yesterday I crashed my drone and now it's lost 😂

Sorry to hear your drone bit the dust mate. I’ve been eyeing up a new drone but I’m not sure I can justify the outlay right now. Arbor Low is fascinating to me but as you can probably tell from the Vlog I find it tough to produce something lens worthy… however, looking at the stones as images in their own right definitely raised the game.

Oddly for landscape photography Arbor Low is best with people in it at an Equinox or Solstice because it was made for people. And it’s about time farmers had a similar right to shoot drones as well as out of control dogs. If people three thousand years ago could imagine their constructions in the landscape why do we need to dumb that down now?
