Egypt use to be one of the most liberal countries in North Africa and the Middle East. Up till the late 70s, you wouldn't see a single woman wearing a headscarf. Most women dreesed freely, wore miniskirts or whatever they want without getting harassed or catcalled. The so called modern Islamic awakening started in the 80s, Saudi Arabia used their petro-dollar to fund and spread Wahabism (strict version of Islam) allover the world including Egypt. By the late 80s, women started gradually wearing headscarf until we reached this awful state. I lived in Egypt in 70s and watched how the country transformed to a different Egypt we don't know. You did a great job explaining the current situation in Egypt.
Hi Gareth, as an Egyptian woman who currently lives in Cairo, I can tell you that it's best for a woman to read up on the country before visiting. Never let your guard down, have eyes at the back of your head! I know that the weather is hot and you would be tempted to put on short shorts and a tank top, but don't. Dress conservatively, cover your knees and shoulders and try to blend in. For the most part Egyptians are quite friendly and helpful, but once again, never let your guard down. It's a good idea to have a tour guide with you or a local friend. Of course in beach towns like Dahab or Hurghada or Gouna harassment is so minimal it's almost non-existent. It's Cairo and Alexandria that you really have to look out for. I'm speaking from personal experience.
I just wanted to tell it’s an injustice women need to cover themselves in order to be respected meanwhile men can easily go under the sun in shorts and t-shirt. Educate your sons to respect women

It was easier to walk about having someone who was fluent in Arabic. I also learned a few common phrases to assist in with my travels. Egypt is a memorable, excellent place to travel. As an Arab who hates hustling, I was skeptical of visiting Egypt alone despite being there twice with an egyptian friend and loving every bit of the trip’s experience. I cannot stress enough to say how safe, beautiful, unique and amazing this country and its people can be. My advise to any foreigner is to experience the country for his/her self, this country gets a lot of negative feedback in which not all the time is fair. I have to thank Gareth for being absolutely positive & balanced in his feedback on visiting Egypt, much love!!
Egypt indeed has it's charm but it's beneficial to warn first timers of the unwritten rules in any Egyptian City for example it's not allow to film in certain places as civilian police appear from nowhere and start investigating you and your activities. It's quite intimidating.
I’m an Egyptian woman and I advise female travelers to dress very conservatively as much as possible because Egypt unfortunately is a male dominated society and plagued with sexual harassment so women are harassed generally regardless of their age or race! Better to travel with a group of friends and also have a local guide Here in Egypt if a woman is with a man , other men won’t approach her! It’s like having a body guard lol It’s sad but true But aside from men harassment, Egypt is safe and generally people here are friendly and nice 😊

Egyptian women suffer from this every day, everywhere they go so you can Imagine how terrible this is! especially in Cairo so be careful and you can always report any harassment to the police they take this seriously especially if you are a tourist as well!

Do men address women tourists when they are with a tourist man or would they only speak to him? 3. Hi gareth as an Egyptian women right here my tips is just dress more modestly in egypt and if you find scammers just ignore them and tell them no we don’t want that . On the other end of the spectrum egypt is one of most magical countries in the world with rich history and amazing culture Egyptians just love people and loves interacting with different people that may seem off guard to some foreigners but just know that our culture and religion makes us have to be hospitable to people and we would love to help anyone don’t hesitate to ask for help when you feel lost and just enjoy it ❤️
just like any place, as a woman in Egypt, there are safe and not-safe spaces. Be travel-wise. When I was new here - there no hassles. Know where you're going and just enjoy. I've been on the train, taxi, Uber and walking even late in the evening (but in places with many people). Thanks for this Gareth!

I'm a solo female traveler and have been in Egypt for almost 8 months now, I planned to come for just 3 months and I'm still here😂Now I'm using Cairo as a sort of home base while traveling to various regions in Egypt and also nearby countries. Lot's of respect for this video man, I have a small channel and I've actually been meaning to make a video about this same topic myself because I am constantly being asked by other women if Egypt is safe (whether it's women on facebook groups, friends back home in the US, or just other travelers I meet here). I travel on my own, booking buses, taking local transportation (microbuses or the metro here in Cairo), wander the markets alone, basically go everywhere alone, and I feel very safe here. There may be some verbal harassment but that is the extent of it (save for one loser that groped me in Khan El-Khalili on a busy night), and I feel very comfortable walking around late at night. So I would say exactly what these women say in your video, Yes! Egypt is safe for solo female travelers

@@alisyd5645 Awesome, I love India! I went solo backpacking around India for 3 months back in 2019, I would love to go back as I barely scratched the surface of the country. I only spent time in the north, never even made it to Mumbai where I wanted to visit a friend who's from there, let alone even further south into Kerala and other places I would love to visit. I'll have to go back some day, friends I've made from there are always asking when I will return. I have been living in Egypt for coming up on 10 months now, but to be honest I still have many other places to explore in the country 😅Because I am living here now (Cairo) I know I have plenty of time to explore the country, so I have extended periods in Cairo before I take trips to explore other regions in the country. Just like in India, I still haven't been south in Egypt yet! 😂Right now it's very hot down there though, so I am thinking about going later in the year when the temperature drops a bit. The places I have been so far: Siwa, Alexandria, Port Said, and Dahab. I also took a tour to the Black and White Desert, but that's it! I have enjoyed Cairo the most, as it's bursting with life and has so much to offer, from local areas to downtown Cairo. I also like big, hectic and chaotic cities so it makes sense I like Cairo (I also loved New Delhi, spending nearly 3 weeks there on my trip in 2019, lived in Saigon, Vietnam for a while, amongst other large cities around the world). I have made many Egyptian friends and have been to several people's houses for tea or dinner, invited to future weddings, etc. Off the beaten path stays...? I haven't searched for too much of that to be honest, since I've made lots of Egyptian friends and am dating an Egyptian guy now, though I'm sure if you hop on couchsurfing or workaway websites you could find something remote or rural. I would say the hostel I stayed at in Siwa (deep into the Western Desert near the border with Libya) was pretty off the beaten path, and had a great time staying there. I was the only guest there at the time and made friends with the owners, who are from Cairo. I told them to message me when they were in Cairo and they actually did, I went to their family home, had dinner and shisha, and their sister even invited me to her wedding! I've been to their home several times now. So if you're friendly I don't think you'll have an issue meeting locals, they are very welcoming and hospitable, in my experience. This sounds exactly what I was thinking a year and a half ago when I went to Egypt solo for two weeks in March, 2020! I've been back twice since then, with another trip planned for March, 2023. Somehow, I connected with the greatest, most delightful people there. I absolutely fell in love with the amazing, crazy, wonderful, wild, beautiful, unforgettable country, culture and people that are Egypt. You go! Maybe our paths will cross one day....wouldn't that be the greatest!

I will give my honest and unbiased experience in Egypt as a complete solo female traveler. I went knowing all the bad and the good, lots of research etc. I went in with my best intentions and thinking like these women are saying "yes, it's very safe, etc" But from the moment I stepped a foot in the country I was harrased to the max, including a sexual harrasment experience in broad daylight at Khan el Khalili. Even though I was covered from head to toe! But as soon as they realize you're a foreigner those men feel entitled to touch you, grab u, pull you etc. They even teach their kids since they're little to do the same. Second harrasment experienced at the Al Azhar park by a bunch of kids under 18 who kept touching me and pulling me forcefully even after repeated attempts to tell them to leave me alone or I will call police..... nothing stopped them! Forget about notifying police about anything, because when I tried to file a report about a guide who scammed me over a thousand dollars, they refused to assist or even file a report! To them you're a foreigner and your word is worth nothing, especially if you're female. I was a victim of harrasment, theft and corruption. Will probably not ever come back unless I have enough money to hire an entire entourage of body guards etc. (Obviously not realistic) measuring the "good" the bad and everything in between, there's definitely more bad than good, out of dozens of ppl encountered, only 2 were honest decent citizens. I'm sorry but that's not good enough for me. It's my job to warn others of my experience, since I do see lots of ppl wanting to sugar coat the truth, and I've noticed lots of those ppl are biased due to relatives, boyfriend's, husband's they have in Egypt.
even that i can speak Arabic i felt very unsafe there, it was a nightmare, crowded roads, uncivil people i always thought that it will be like we see on TV and social media but it was total sh*t.
We are very sorry about what happened to you ... but you didn't do what the video is emphasizing on which is (hiring a legitimate or reputable tour guide will cut the all bad staff to less than 1%) because simply tourism is one of the main source of income in Egypt so they respect foreigners and listen to them -unlike what you wrote- to maintain this source of income and make them come again and have a living to feed their families. we don't underestimate your opinion but tourism is one of the main source of income to Egypt.
Egypt is a blend of hypocrisy, religiosity and low culture and people who are encouraging others to visit Egypt are actually partners in crime. Egypt should be boycotted but not entirely. It is steeped in poverty, Western women should boycott Egypt temporarily but men should definitely visit it.

@@therealzahyra as you mentioned (it seems to you) ... The value of the legitimate tour guide with a good reputation comes from the tourists evaluation and feedback. She didn't get that kind of tour guide and as a result she had a bad experience in Egypt.. We didn't mention that she is a liar but instead what the video is talking about (legitimate tour guide with a good reputation will reduce the cons to less than 1%

10 years ago, I traveled around Egypt on my own as a 60 year old woman for two months. I had no big problems....one guy was a bit touchy on a bus and I just moved to another seat. Mostly, I felt very safe moving around the country on my own using public transport and budget accommodation. I did not go out to parties at night etc. but I quickly found that the city streets were still filled with families at night time so it was fine to walk around after dark. Dahab and other more tourist beach towns you can dress casually but elsewhere you need to dress conservatively. This does include sleeves! No bare shoulders. The touts hassling you at the markets are the biggest problem. Just look ahead and do not stop.....they want to be your friend, or will give you a guilt trip or whatever.....do not take it personally....it is just a game. Take a few days to find out the real prices before doing any buying. You will always pay more than the locals....a few extra dollars is not going to break your budget! Have lots of small change notes. Most of your interactions will be with males. They run the hostels and stores. Enjoy their friendship and company but be aware that some will see you as a way of getting more income or a green card. There are some very sad stories out there of women travelers in Egypt being dupped. Egypt is one of the most interesting places in the world to visit. I met a few western women who go there every year for a few months. Cheap to do at a nice guest house. I could happily do that too.
The Egyptian teenagers especially in cairo want to attract attention by following the tourists or even taking selfies with them but they are completely unharmful , they are so friendly and they will work hard to help once you need a help or asked them for anything , on the contrary , in sharm sheikh , dahab , the red sea towns , tourists are completely safe and they can wear whatever they want but in the upper egypt and cairo , they have to respect the country islamic principles by not wearing something really attractive otherwise they are all safe , Egyptian are so friendly and talkative people , they want to speak to you to welcome you and make you feel comfortable
Thank you for your honest reviews and vlogs on my beloved home and thanks to every person who spoke their mind and revealed the truth about the widely misrepresented Egypt. It is instilled in our blood through many generations to be a hospitable people and we enjoy accommodating locals and foreigners alike. Naturally, take a tour guide if you are going to a touristy historical sight. Otherwise, you are not just safe in Egypt, you are in the protection and care of the Egyptian people.
As a Canadian Egyptian who is married to to a Scottish Canadian, I've seen a lot of these issues first hand on our visits, I think the tips here are spot on, they summarize most of what I try to say to people for advise, I just want people to remember people who bother and harasse the tourists are not represtitive of the Egyptian societyas a whole, its a group that preys on tourists and live by the monuments but I get it is hard for tourists to tell the difference if this is all what they can see, if you have a bad experience it is hard to recover from it
I would personally recommend just finding a local friend. Once you find that one nice person, everything follows. As an Egyptian if a tourist asks me for help or smth of that sort. I’ll literally drop everything I have for the rest of their time in Egypt, grab some friends, and show them the great experience Egypt can be.

Hi Gareth, for me Egypt has always been a great place to travel to. I first travelled there with my friends and then came back by myself a few times. I did have local friends who I could rely on for local knowledge etc. As suggested if you can, always use a guide!! Thanks Gareth for sharing and for giving another insight on Egypt!! 😘

I visited Egypt in 2019. I went with another friend of mine, we were always cautious. We never had an issue. People want to take pictures with you, at first we thought that was weird. We know both English and Spanish, we were surprised so many Egyptians knew Spanish. Food was amazing! People are friendly. The only dangerous thing we experienced was crossing those streets 😆
I traveled with my sisters to Egypt 6 years ago and not once did we feel unsafe. I feel like I relived my trip through your videos thank you for sharing. I will say as women, we can tend to be more showy in skin here in the U.S but please respect the culture and dress appropriately and you will have the best time of your life! Egypt holds such a huge space in my heart and I pray I’m able to travel there again one day.
I went to Egypt with my mother in 2017 and it was such an amazing experience. I did hire an Egyptologist tour guide which was the best decision for a first time traveler to Egypt because he provided historical context as well as added personal security to wherever he took me. My most important advice to female travelers is to cover yourself (bare legs, shoulders) and do not drink tap water. The water is not treated the way it is in the States so your stomach will regret it. It is also very important to do your research before going there and to respect the culture. Egypt was safe, incredibly beautiful and the people were hospitable and kind. Do not hesitate to go there because it is an experience of a lifetime.
Great that you covered this Gareth. In my personal view - the great country of Egypt! The people of Egypt tend to be kind and welcoming! Having said that, the hustle bustle and the VENDOR-Game - can be next level. People are out to feed their family and make a living from the tourist trade so it can wear you down if you're not with a guide, in my opinion. Tipping culture is also something that's can be a big part of your day in the tourist world, at the sites, even with the staff there, in my experience (Cairo, Luxor, the temple at Komobo especially. - I don't know abt Sharm or Siwa or Alexandria). There also is a difference in what's called courtesy assistance and assistance offered but with a tip expected at the end. The people of Egypt are a nice people but the layers of understanding how things work, you may not have full time for. So for me, a solo-traveler to many countries, I would suggest, not only women --- but everyone go with a guide - at least the first time. Especially in Cairo, even Luxor and Aswan. Sharm El Sheikh - You may be able to navigate solo- with less prep but that's only speculation on my part based on what I've seen and learned from afar. Have the BEST time in Egypt, it's a country that should not be missed for sure! - get to the red sea for Scuba certification if you want. I'm going back for sure (I had to cancel this year's trip conincidentally) ! -e
Sadly, the Pyramids area needs to have more security, so I would definitely recommend hiring a tour guide there. But also, the more you blend in, the less noticeable and more comfortable you will be. So, match the way people dress. Also, if you go to nicer areas like resorts and malls, etc., you'll likely have no issues being on your own. However, if you're going to more crowded areas like markets, etc., expect more attention, so either have a tour guide or learn a couple of Arabic words to tell vendors to stay away.
As an Egyptian Residing abroad..I am jealous of the wonderful experience all tourists have...hopefully I can go back soon home & do some of what I saw!

A bummer since I love street food, but good to be aware of the spaces where your presence as a woman isn't customary.

I’m an American who has been to Egypt many times. My daughter lives in Cairo and is married to an Egyptian. I have to say, I have never felt unsafe in Egypt. I have been many places throughout the country. The only place I really don’t enjoy is the small village that my son in law is from just outside of Mansoura. These people have never seen an American in their village. I get stared at when I’m there, but, not in a bad way. They’re truly just shocked to see me. Lol My daughter has said that she has never had any negative attention since living in Egypt. However, she is Muslim and wears a traditional Abhaya and hijab. So, she doesn’t stick out like I do. 😁
I am an American lady living in Cairo for 2 years now. Egypt is a magical, wonderful place; the people and the culture make Egypt my 2nd home. I feel totally safe living here. I dress modestly (pants or long dresses). I have walked downtown close to the Giza pyramids in the middle of the night and never had any problems.
I go to Cairo, Alexandra,and many other places every summer from June to august 1st to see family in 50% Egyptian Egypt truly is so underrated people have made it seem like it is just full of creeps and scammers. When really it isn't there are always going to be scammers anywhere you go even in America.But in Cairo if you dont wear cloth that will cover your legs or if you wear a revaling top then thats when you get cat called or harrased.I learned that the hard way.
Most important for a solo woman traveler is to try cover up most of her body when go in the street alone so she will look like a local and nobody will look at her or ask for a selfie

I want to spend a couple months and really deep dive. I like the idea of air b n b...I also eNjoy charming guesthouses. Im planning an itinerary and plan keeping it chill. I know most really nice expensive hotel have day passes which is a great way to save money in seaside resort towns. My confidence level is cautious yet high. And I'm really excited. Yes, egypt is very safe and poverty rates are very low and as an Egyptian I enjoyed the life there very much, there is about 13 million tourist visit egypt every year, I think its the safest country in africa❤
Where did you find Ziad? Since you mentioned in a video that he's not a real tour guide. He seems very genuine and a reliable connection to have there, as a foreigner. Biso also. And I love how your Uber driver stayed with you, in the first video, until your connection came. It shows their care for someone who doesn't speak the language and can't navigate the city and people, like the locals can. I really loved your Egypt series! I've always been interested in Ancient Egyptian history and have yet to visit the pyramids. I hope you'll visit again soon and film! I'll be looking forward to watching!
Glad to see this video. I went solo & loved it. I hired a guide for the pyramids & sphinx because I didnt want to have to walk. It was hot & the distance is a bit much in the heat. Also to siwa-I did not want to be on a bus for 10 hours so I took a private car/guide. Hurghada & Cairo were awesome & safe.

Thanks, Gareth,for creating this video.It was the missing puzzle piece to ur Egypt series.I think it's great that you are aware of this issue and that you will seek out adding more Egyptian women when you next visit.Female representation should be visible in all ur videos, which I know they usually are. Many travel vloggers do not interact with locals when they visit but you always do and that is why ur so good.Sightseeing is only part of the equation.Its the people of a country that make traveling such a rich experience( unless u just want to go the all inclusive route and sit around a pool or beach all day, which I do not consider traveling!).
when I go to any of the coastal cities, I love to go alone, however going to historical places is much better with a guide as things get ready interesting, BTW guides are cheap

The harassment while in markets is aweful. The first day or two it's funny but after 2 weeks you get rather short with them. Then the scammers attempting to get you to create change for them. The money they give you is back is counterfeit. Never felt unsafe but not a place i have any interest in going back to but so happy we went.

I had many bad experiences my first time in Egypt as a solo traveler I hated it wanted to go home asap. The only reason I went back was because I had an Egyptian bf but the 2nd time I was with him traveling and even with him I had eyes on me and it just feels uncomfortable. If you want to go for the historical sites just go on a big group tour you get to see a lot and you can dress comfortably. I don't recommend traveling alone as a woman you need thick skin. Cities I've been in Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Hurghada and Luxor
I just returned from Cairo went for 3 days spontaneously no plans from Istanbul. All I wanted was to spend a day at the Pyramids and do some trinkets shopping. I met an employee from the hotel that offered to show me around at the bazaar. I felt so safe and trusted the employee who now is my friend forever. Next visit he offered to take me and husband around when I definitely return. It help so much with him speaking of course Arabic being Egyptian. I didn’t get hassled at the market and left with some good prices. I would had done this all alone and I love to bargain too but I love I now have a new best friend that had nothing but good interest of never taking advantage of our new friendship.
I just came back from going totally alone to Egypt. Very true what the lady said you feel everyone watch you and some look in awe and some look in shock or disgust (I'm covered in tattoos lol), I had lots of young girls take pics with me. There was only one time I felt genuinely unsafe and that was in the alexandria bazaar I had found myself down a street alone with maybe 40 men it was about 9pm and my gut instinct told me this is dodgy here go back. I used wrist wallets up my sleeves for my money and kept my phone strapped to my hand and wore full length over sized dresses to cover all my skin and not show my figure, you don't have to dress like that but if you don't you will get alot of attention and I didn't want that. I absolutely would go again, I would feel safer being with someone but I would go again alone, it's wild and loud and crazy but I loved it! Oh also a tip the roads over there are EXTREMELY dangerous if you ask a local lady to hold your hand (or man but I rathered a lady) and help you cross the road for a small tip like I did it will definitely be a good idea , I would not recommend anyone cross the big roads alone lol!
Sad that halfway through the video you say “None of the women I interviewed were actually traveling alone” When you title says “Solo female travelers” I clicked on this video because of the title, and it was a false title, misleading.
Clothes express messages to men in everywhere , just if you cover your body you send him a message that it's not available and you will be safe , if you come to Egypt try to wear in appropriate way and you will be safe

Hats off dude! :) As an Egyptian filmmaker I went to Lithuania and Latvia for a vacation/work trip in 2018, my Lithuanian friends asked me to take care of any racist reactions from old people there - because of the media and how they describe us as Arabs/Muslims..etc of BS :D ... And to be honest I only had one experience in the airport once I landed! xD but for 2 weeks, Oh man... I absolutely enjoyed every moment there :) What I'm saying is; I knew that I might face any of the "bad comments/words by mouth" I read or hear.. but what I did put in my mind is, I'll nevermind those things and I'll try to enjoy to the max and for myself! Egypt is so beautiful and you can really enjoy your time here and yes things are totally different than before 2011 but things are getting back to the right way, slowly.. but way more better than before. With all due respect, this is not Egypt. This is Disney Egypt. Solo female travelers, not talking about females traveling with other females, solo females, do not move about Cairo on your own without a guide. There is a real problem with the culture of men in modern Egypt. Spent 10 weeks there for work and could not wait for it to be over. Will not be going back. My heart goes out to the 99.3% of Egyptian women who report having been sexually harassed. I believe them.

As a woman, I traveled to Egypt with my kids and we loved it, there was not a moment that we did not feel safe. Egyptian people are so friendly we had a wonderful time there.
Huge props for making this video. I have no plans to travel but I'm always in awe of women who travel alone bc I'm definitely not that brave and being 5'2" and slight-figured doesn't help either. I really appreciate you addressing this topic as what you said is totally true and I think about it all the time--many places in the world are male-dominated societies and when people visit or watch videos of that place, you usually see the visitors interacting with men only, and what's shown is only one slice of a society that may have a VERY different reality for men vs. women. But I do get that sometimes that can't be helped due to time constraints or lack of access/contacts. That said, it's incredibly sad that sometimes all it takes is having a man around to prevent harassment (in any place in the world), aka don't respect the woman, respect the man.

Egypt use to be one of the most liberal countries in North Africa and the Middle East. Up till the late 70s, you wouldn't see a single woman wearing a headscarf. Most women dreesed freely, wore miniskirts or whatever they want without getting harassed or catcalled.
The so called modern Islamic awakening started in the 80s, Saudi Arabia used their petro-dollar to fund and spread Wahabism (strict version of Islam) allover the world including Egypt. By the late 80s, women started gradually wearing headscarf until we reached this awful state. I lived in Egypt in 70s and watched how the country transformed to a different Egypt we don't know.

Hi Gareth, as an Egyptian woman who currently lives in Cairo, I can tell you that it's best for a woman to read up on the country before visiting. Never let your guard down, have eyes at the back of your head! I know that the weather is hot and you would be tempted to put on short shorts and a tank top, but don't. Dress conservatively, cover your knees and shoulders and try to blend in. For the most part Egyptians are quite friendly and helpful, but once again, never let your guard down. It's a good idea to have a tour guide with you or a local friend. Of course in beach towns like Dahab or Hurghada or Gouna harassment is so minimal it's almost non-existent. It's Cairo and Alexandria that you really have to look out for. I'm speaking from personal experience.

As an Arab who hates hustling, I was skeptical of visiting Egypt alone despite being there twice with an egyptian friend and loving every bit of the trip’s experience. I cannot stress enough to say how safe, beautiful, unique and amazing this country and its people can be. My advise to any foreigner is to experience the country for his/her self, this country gets a lot of negative feedback in which not all the time is fair. I have to thank Gareth for being absolutely positive & balanced in his feedback on visiting Egypt, much love!!

Egypt indeed has it's charm but it's beneficial to warn first timers of the unwritten rules in any Egyptian City for example it's not allow to film in certain places as civilian police appear from nowhere and start investigating you and your activities. It's quite intimidating.

I’m an Egyptian woman and I advise female travelers to dress very conservatively as much as possible because Egypt unfortunately is a male dominated society and plagued with sexual harassment so women are harassed generally regardless of their age or race!
Better to travel with a group of friends and also have a local guide

Hi gareth as an Egyptian women right here my tips is just dress more modestly in egypt and if you find scammers just ignore them and tell them no we don’t want that . On the other end of the spectrum egypt is one of most magical countries in the world with rich history and amazing culture Egyptians just love people and loves interacting with different people that may seem off guard to some foreigners but just know that our culture and religion makes us have to be hospitable to people and we would love to help anyone don’t hesitate to ask for help when you feel lost and just enjoy it ❤️

just like any place, as a woman in Egypt, there are safe and not-safe spaces. Be travel-wise. When I was new here - there no hassles. Know where you're going and just enjoy. I've been on the train, taxi, Uber and walking even late in the evening (but in places with many people). Thanks for this Gareth!

I'm a solo female traveler and have been in Egypt for almost 8 months now, I planned to come for just 3 months and I'm still here😂Now I'm using Cairo as a sort of home base while traveling to various regions in Egypt and also nearby countries. Lot's of respect for this video man, I have a small channel and I've actually been meaning to make a video about this same topic myself because I am constantly being asked by other women if Egypt is safe (whether it's women on facebook groups, friends back home in the US, or just other travelers I meet here). I travel on my own, booking buses, taking local transportation (microbuses or the metro here in Cairo), wander the markets alone, basically go everywhere alone, and I feel very safe here. There may be some verbal harassment but that is the extent of it (save for one loser that groped me in Khan El-Khalili on a busy night), and I feel very comfortable walking around late at night. So I would say exactly what these women say in your video, Yes! Egypt is safe for solo female travelers

@@alisyd5645 Awesome, I love India! I went solo backpacking around India for 3 months back in 2019, I would love to go back as I barely scratched the surface of the country. I only spent time in the north, never even made it to Mumbai where I wanted to visit a friend who's from there, let alone even further south into Kerala and other places I would love to visit. I'll have to go back some day, friends I've made from there are always asking when I will return.
I have been living in Egypt for coming up on 10 months now, but to be honest I still have many other places to explore in the country 😅Because I am living here now (Cairo) I know I have plenty of time to explore the country, so I have extended periods in Cairo before I take trips to explore other regions in the country. Just like in India, I still haven't been south in Egypt yet! 😂Right now it's very hot down there though, so I am thinking about going later in the year when the temperature drops a bit. The places I have been so far: Siwa, Alexandria, Port Said, and Dahab. I also took a tour to the Black and White Desert, but that's it!
I have enjoyed Cairo the most, as it's bursting with life and has so much to offer, from local areas to downtown Cairo. I also like big, hectic and chaotic cities so it makes sense I like Cairo (I also loved New Delhi, spending nearly 3 weeks there on my trip in 2019, lived in Saigon, Vietnam for a while, amongst other large cities around the world).
I have made many Egyptian friends and have been to several people's houses for tea or dinner, invited to future weddings, etc. Off the beaten path stays...? I haven't searched for too much of that to be honest, since I've made lots of Egyptian friends and am dating an Egyptian guy now, though I'm sure if you hop on couchsurfing or workaway websites you could find something remote or rural. I would say the hostel I stayed at in Siwa (deep into the Western Desert near the border with Libya) was pretty off the beaten path, and had a great time staying there. I was the only guest there at the time and made friends with the owners, who are from Cairo. I told them to message me when they were in Cairo and they actually did, I went to their family home, had dinner and shisha, and their sister even invited me to her wedding! I've been to their home several times now. So if you're friendly I don't think you'll have an issue meeting locals, they are very welcoming and hospitable, in my experience. This sounds exactly what I was thinking a year and a half ago when I went to Egypt solo for two weeks in March, 2020! I've been back twice since then, with another trip planned for March, 2023. Somehow, I connected with the greatest, most delightful people there. I absolutely fell in love with the amazing, crazy, wonderful, wild, beautiful, unforgettable country, culture and people that are Egypt. You go! Maybe our paths will cross one day....wouldn't that be the greatest!

I will give my honest and unbiased experience in Egypt as a complete solo female traveler. I went knowing all the bad and the good, lots of research etc. I went in with my best intentions and thinking like these women are saying "yes, it's very safe, etc" But from the moment I stepped a foot in the country I was harrased to the max, including a sexual harrasment experience in broad daylight at Khan el Khalili. Even though I was covered from head to toe! But as soon as they realize you're a foreigner those men feel entitled to touch you, grab u, pull you etc. They even teach their kids since they're little to do the same. Second harrasment experienced at the Al Azhar park by a bunch of kids under 18 who kept touching me and pulling me forcefully even after repeated attempts to tell them to leave me alone or I will call police..... nothing stopped them!
Forget about notifying police about anything, because when I tried to file a report about a guide who scammed me over a thousand dollars, they refused to assist or even file a report! To them you're a foreigner and your word is worth nothing, especially if you're female. I was a victim of harrasment, theft and corruption. Will probably not ever come back unless I have enough money to hire an entire entourage of body guards etc. (Obviously not realistic) measuring the "good" the bad and everything in between, there's definitely more bad than good, out of dozens of ppl encountered, only 2 were honest decent citizens. I'm sorry but that's not good enough for me. It's my job to warn others of my experience, since I do see lots of ppl wanting to sugar coat the truth, and I've noticed lots of those ppl are biased due to relatives, boyfriend's, husband's they have in Egypt.
even that i can speak Arabic i felt very unsafe there, it was a nightmare, crowded roads, uncivil people i always thought that it will be like we see on TV and social media but it was total sh*t.
We are very sorry about what happened to you ... but you didn't do what the video is emphasizing on which is (hiring a legitimate or reputable tour guide will cut the all bad staff to less than 1%) because simply tourism is one of the main source of income in Egypt so they respect foreigners and listen to them -unlike what you wrote- to maintain this source of income and make them come again and have a living to feed their families.

Egypt is a blend of hypocrisy, religiosity and low culture and people who are encouraging others to visit Egypt are actually partners in crime.
Egypt should be boycotted but not entirely. It is steeped in poverty, Western women should boycott Egypt temporarily but men should definitely visit it.

10 years ago, I traveled around Egypt on my own as a 60 year old woman for two months. I had no big problems....one guy was a bit touchy on a bus and I just moved to another seat. Mostly, I felt very safe moving around the country on my own using public transport and budget accommodation. I did not go out to parties at night etc. but I quickly found that the city streets were still filled with families at night time so it was fine to walk around after dark. Dahab and other more tourist beach towns you can dress casually but elsewhere you need to dress conservatively. This does include sleeves! No bare shoulders. The touts hassling you at the markets are the biggest problem. Just look ahead and do not stop.....they want to be your friend, or will give you a guilt trip or whatever.....do not take it personally....it is just a game. Take a few days to find out the real prices before doing any buying. You will always pay more than the locals....a few extra dollars is not going to break your budget! Have lots of small change notes. Most of your interactions will be with males. They run the hostels and stores. Enjoy their friendship and company but be aware that some will see you as a way of getting more income or a green card. There are some very sad stories out there of women travelers in Egypt being dupped. Egypt is one of the most interesting places in the world to visit. I met a few western women who go there every year for a few months. Cheap to do at a nice guest house. I could happily do that too.

The Egyptian teenagers especially in cairo want to attract attention by following the tourists or even taking selfies with them but they are completely unharmful , they are so friendly and they will work hard to help once you need a help or asked them for anything , on the contrary , in sharm sheikh , dahab , the red sea towns , tourists are completely safe and they can wear whatever they want but in the upper egypt and cairo , they have to respect the country islamic principles by not wearing something really attractive otherwise they are all safe , Egyptian are so friendly and talkative people , they want to speak to you to welcome you and make you feel comfortable

Naturally, take a tour guide if you are going to a touristy historical sight. Otherwise, you are not just safe in Egypt, you are in the protection and care of the Egyptian people.
As a Canadian Egyptian who is married to to a Scottish Canadian, I've seen a lot of these issues first hand on our visits, I think the tips here are spot on, they summarize most of what I try to say to people for advise, I just want people to remember people who bother and harasse the tourists are not represtitive of the Egyptian societyas a whole, its a group that preys on tourists and live by the monuments but I get it is hard for tourists to tell the difference if this is all what they can see, if you have a bad experience it is hard to recover from it
I would personally recommend just finding a local friend. Once you find that one nice person, everything follows. As an Egyptian if a tourist asks me for help or smth of that sort. I’ll literally drop everything I have for the rest of their time in Egypt, grab some friends, and show them the great experience Egypt can be.

Hi Gareth, for me Egypt has always been a great place to travel to. I first travelled there with my friends and then came back by myself a few times. I did have local friends who I could rely on for local knowledge etc. As suggested if you can, always use a guide!! Thanks Gareth for sharing and for giving another insight on Egypt!! 😘

I visited Egypt in 2019. I went with another friend of mine, we were always cautious. We never had an issue. People want to take pictures with you, at first we thought that was weird. We know both English and Spanish, we were surprised so many Egyptians knew Spanish. Food was amazing! People are friendly. The only dangerous thing we experienced was crossing those streets 😆

I traveled with my sisters to Egypt 6 years ago and not once did we feel unsafe. I feel like I relived my trip through your videos thank you for sharing. I will say as women, we can tend to be more showy in skin here in the U.S but please respect the culture and dress appropriately and you will have the best time of your life! Egypt holds such a huge space in my heart and I pray I’m able to travel there again one day.

I went to Egypt with my mother in 2017 and it was such an amazing experience. I did hire an Egyptologist tour guide which was the best decision for a first time traveler to Egypt because he provided historical context as well as added personal security to wherever he took me.
My most important advice to female travelers is to cover yourself (bare legs, shoulders) and do not drink tap water. The water is not treated the way it is in the States so your stomach will regret it. It is also very important to do your research before going there and to respect the culture.
Egypt was safe, incredibly beautiful and the people were hospitable and kind. Do not hesitate to go there because it is an experience of a lifetime.

The people of Egypt tend to be kind and welcoming!
Having said that, the hustle bustle and the VENDOR-Game - can be next level. People are out to feed their family and make a living from the tourist trade so it can wear you down if you're not with a guide, in my opinion.
Tipping culture is also something that's can be a big part of your day in the tourist world, at the sites, even with the staff there, in my experience (Cairo, Luxor, the temple at Komobo especially. - I don't know abt Sharm or Siwa or Alexandria).
There also is a difference in what's called courtesy assistance and assistance offered but with a tip expected at the end. The people of Egypt are a nice people but the layers of understanding how things work, you may not have full time for. So for me, a solo-traveler to many countries, I would suggest, not only women --- but everyone go with a guide - at least the first time. Especially in Cairo, even Luxor and Aswan. Sharm El Sheikh - You may be able to navigate solo- with less prep but that's only speculation on my part based on what I've seen and learned from afar. Have the BEST time in Egypt, it's a country that should not be missed for sure! - get to the red sea for Scuba certification if you want. I'm going back for sure (I had to cancel this year's trip conincidentally) ! -e
Sadly, the Pyramids area needs to have more security, so I would definitely recommend hiring a tour guide there. But also, the more you blend in, the less noticeable and more comfortable you will be. So, match the way people dress. Also, if you go to nicer areas like resorts and malls, etc., you'll likely have no issues being on your own. However, if you're going to more crowded areas like markets, etc., expect more attention, so either have a tour guide or learn a couple of Arabic words to tell vendors to stay away.
There is a huge development project in place right now at the pyramids area. The new experience will be much different. Come back!
What about sleeping in those little nice hotels in front of the pyramids as a woman?

I'm planning a trip to Egypt for later this year and have been watching all your videos, it was especially evident during the street food episodes that there weren't many women around. A bummer since I love street food, but good to be aware of the spaces where your presence as a woman isn't customary.

I’m an American who has been to Egypt many times. My daughter lives in Cairo and is married to an Egyptian. I have to say, I have never felt unsafe in Egypt. I have been many places throughout the country. The only place I really don’t enjoy is the small village that my son in law is from just outside of Mansoura. These people have never seen an American in their village. I get stared at when I’m there, but, not in a bad way. They’re truly just shocked to see me. Lol My daughter has said that she has never had any negative attention since living in Egypt. However, she is Muslim and wears a traditional Abhaya and hijab. So, she doesn’t stick out like I do. 😁
I am an American lady living in Cairo for 2 years now. Egypt is a magical, wonderful place; the people and the culture make Egypt my 2nd home. I feel totally safe living here. I dress modestly (pants or long dresses). I have walked downtown close to the Giza pyramids in the middle of the night and never had any problems.
I go to Cairo, Alexandra,and many other places every summer from June to august 1st to see family in 50% Egyptian Egypt truly is so underrated people have made it seem like it is just full of creeps and scammers. When really it isn't there are always going to be scammers anywhere you go even in America.But in Cairo if you dont wear cloth that will cover your legs or if you wear a revaling top then thats when you get cat called or harrased.I learned that the hard way.

Most important for a solo woman traveler is to try cover up most of her body when go in the street alone so she will look like a local and nobody will look at her or ask for a selfie

Thanks for this... I've traveled for years in India solo and allways have had great experiences, like a second home. I feel like Egypt will be as fun, rewarding and as comfortable. I want to spend a couple months and really deep dive. I like the idea of air b n b...I also eNjoy charming guesthouses. Im planning an itinerary and plan keeping it chill. I know most really nice expensive hotel have day passes which is a great way to save money in seaside resort towns.
My confidence level is cautious yet high. And I'm really excited.

I think its generally safe for women traveller, solo or not in Egypt. There is a general good experience from these travellers.
Yes, egypt is very safe and poverty rates are very low and as an Egyptian I enjoyed the life there very much, there is about 13 million tourist visit egypt every year, I think its the safest country in africa❤

Where did you find Ziad? Since you mentioned in a video that he's not a real tour guide. He seems very genuine and a reliable connection to have there, as a foreigner. Biso also. And I love how your Uber driver stayed with you, in the first video, until your connection came. It shows their care for someone who doesn't speak the language and can't navigate the city and people, like the locals can.

Glad to see this video. I went solo & loved it. I hired a guide for the pyramids & sphinx because I didnt want to have to walk. It was hot & the distance is a bit much in the heat. Also to siwa-I did not want to be on a bus for 10 hours so I took a private car/guide. Hurghada & Cairo were awesome & safe.

Thanks, Gareth,for creating this video.It was the missing puzzle piece to ur Egypt series.I think it's great that you are aware of this issue and that you will seek out adding more Egyptian women when you next visit.Female representation should be visible in all ur videos, which I know they usually are. Many travel vloggers do not interact with locals when they visit but you always do and that is why ur so good.Sightseeing is only part of the equation.Its the people of a country that make traveling such a rich experience( unless u just want to go the all inclusive route and sit around a pool or beach all day, which I do not consider traveling!).

Im aware of the usual dangers of solo travel as a woman and it's undeniable that some places require more wits to travel to. Still, Im excited to go to Egypt in November =D
Women should:
1- hire a tour guide or have a local friend with you
2- dress modestly
3- be very good at bargaining if they plan on buying things
4- have your Witt's about you
5- less touristy places like siwa , marsa alam & dahab are more safe , less scams and people are friendly
The harassment while in markets is aweful. The first day or two it's funny but after 2 weeks you get rather short with them. Then the scammers attempting to get you to create change for them. The money they give you is back is counterfeit. Never felt unsafe but not a place i have any interest in going back to but so happy we went.

@@jayes8191 because they are fascinated by westerners as they only see them in Hollywood movies and will brag among thier piers that they met a westerner ( the closest thing to a celebratory in thier young mind) I think older generation did not face such thing for multiple reasons Firstly the power of social media , secondly before 2011 we had so many tourists it was the norm , as tourism is coming back it is something new for a 13 year old
And you can see the same excitement with young girls too
Even I get excited ( for other reasons ) as seeing tourists give me hope to going back to the normal before COVID and before 2011

I had many bad experiences my first time in Egypt as a solo traveler I hated it wanted to go home asap. The only reason I went back was because I had an Egyptian bf but the 2nd time I was with him traveling and even with him I had eyes on me and it just feels uncomfortable. If you want to go for the historical sites just go on a big group tour you get to see a lot and you can dress comfortably. I don't recommend traveling alone as a woman you need thick skin.

I just returned from Cairo went for 3 days spontaneously no plans from Istanbul. All I wanted was to spend a day at the Pyramids and do some trinkets shopping. I met an employee from the hotel that offered to show me around at the bazaar. I felt so safe and trusted the employee who now is my friend forever. Next visit he offered to take me and husband around when I definitely return. It help so much with him speaking of course Arabic being Egyptian. I didn’t get hassled at the market and left with some good prices. I would had done this all alone and I love to bargain too but I love I now have a new best friend that had nothing but good interest of never taking advantage of our new friendship.
You didn't get harassed because YOU HAD YOUR HUSBAND WITH YOU! Simple.

I just came back from going totally alone to Egypt. Very true what the lady said you feel everyone watch you and some look in awe and some look in shock or disgust (I'm covered in tattoos lol), I had lots of young girls take pics with me. There was only one time I felt genuinely unsafe and that was in the alexandria bazaar I had found myself down a street alone with maybe 40 men it was about 9pm and my gut instinct told me this is dodgy here go back. I used wrist wallets up my sleeves for my money and kept my phone strapped to my hand and wore full length over sized dresses to cover all my skin and not show my figure, you don't have to dress like that but if you don't you will get alot of attention and I didn't want that. I absolutely would go again, I would feel safer being with someone but I would go again alone, it's wild and loud and crazy but I loved it! Oh also a tip the roads over there are EXTREMELY dangerous if you ask a local lady to hold your hand (or man but I rathered a lady) and help you cross the road for a small tip like I did it will definitely be a good idea , I would not recommend anyone cross the big roads alone lol!

As an Egyptian filmmaker I went to Lithuania and Latvia for a vacation/work trip in 2018, my Lithuanian friends asked me to take care of any racist reactions from old people there - because of the media and how they describe us as Arabs/Muslims..etc of BS :D ... And to be honest I only had one experience in the airport once I landed! xD but for 2 weeks, Oh man... I absolutely enjoyed every moment there :)
What I'm saying is; I knew that I might face any of the "bad comments/words by mouth" I read or hear.. but what I did put in my mind is, I'll nevermind those things and I'll try to enjoy to the max and for myself!
Egypt is so beautiful and you can really enjoy your time here and yes things are totally different than before 2011 but things are getting back to the right way, slowly.. but way more better than before. Wishing everyone who is planning to come to really have their best and safe trips ever ♥

With all due respect, this is not Egypt. This is Disney Egypt.
Solo female travelers, not talking about females traveling with other females, solo females, do not move about Cairo on your own without a guide. There is a real problem with the culture of men in modern Egypt. Spent 10 weeks there for work and could not wait for it to be over. Will not be going back. My heart goes out to the 99.3% of Egyptian women who report having been sexually harassed. I believe them.

As a woman, I traveled to Egypt with my kids and we loved it, there was not a moment that we did not feel safe. Egyptian people are so friendly we had a wonderful time there.

Huge props for making this video. I have no plans to travel but I'm always in awe of women who travel alone bc I'm definitely not that brave and being 5'2" and slight-figured doesn't help either. I really appreciate you addressing this topic as what you said is totally true and I think about it all the time--many places in the world are male-dominated societies and when people visit or watch videos of that place, you usually see the visitors interacting with men only, and what's shown is only one slice of a society that may have a VERY different reality for men vs. women. But I do get that sometimes that can't be helped due to time constraints or lack of access/contacts. That said, it's incredibly sad that sometimes all it takes is having a man around to prevent harassment (in any place in the world), aka don't respect the woman, respect the man.
