My trip to Egypt was nothing short of incredibly challenging and extremely fulfilling. From the historic Pyramids of Giza and Luxor Temple, to the amazing Egyptian food and wildly entertaining people, this was truly a trip of a lifetime.
Here is my Ultimate Egypt Travel Guide in Q&A Form:
IS EGYPT SAFE?
Yes. If we compare Egypt to let's say Brazil, I think it is very safe. In many places around Latin America you have to be worried about being robbed at gunpoint, car jacked, pickpocketed and much more.
In Egypt, you just have to look out for scammers, hecklers, gawkers, and people trying to sell you things or get undeserved tips from you. That is my very short answer.

IS EGYPT EXPENSIVE?
No. As I explain in the video; you can find good quality hotels in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and across Egypt for a good price. Tours are affordable, and transportation can also be done on a budget. Entrance fees and tips can add up, so just be aware of that.
You just need to be aware of people trying to charge you more money on small things.
Food costs will be between $3-10 USD per meal, and Uber is the best and cheapest way to get around.
IS IT DIFFICULT TO FILM? HOW WERE THE POLICE?
We did not have trouble filming at all. We were usually either with local friends or a tour guide, and they opened many doors for us. We filmed as low-key as possible, and we removed our microphones for the majority of our trip. We also did not bring drones.
As for Egyptian Police, we truly did not have any issues. Whenever necessary, I explained that I was an American photographer or UA-camr and they were honestly just excited.
Tyler and I also traveled with very limited gear as to not intimidate anyone, and we filmed with our iPhones wherever necessary.

hahaha OMG, I laughed when you said the most unsafe was inside a car - I relate! All these years, I never take my eyes off the road when my Egyptian hubby drives! I agree!
And you completely got the tipping culture - many people don't realize that many "employees" have no salary - only a pittance of a daily allowance and rely on tips. And yes, I am happy to pay a little bit more in tips and only rarely am not willing to do so.
Re: Photography and filming in Egypt - yes, - informed is the best. Sunny was scammed by his"producer", did a clickbait video when his filming permit came post-arrival (should have been pre-arrival) c'mon I saw the dates on his journalism card- didn't like how he said it - too much unnecessary production equipment. An Egyptian vouching for you with IDS presented help. I know. My husband is a journalist. You and Tyler are blessed Gareth. Always feet on the ground. Your attitude and perspective gave credibility towards watching your other countries' videos. REAL TALK

I believe he failed to partner with the right people, hired a scammer as a local producer and made several mistakes picking his destinations. Wishing you all the best in your future travels
Thank you for speaking on the fact that you do not feel comfortable taking camel rides or activities involving animals being mistreated. I always appreciate hearing other people mention this.

As Egyptian I can say this is the most fair review I ever heard about Egypt.
I can confirm you that our tredition not let our foreign friends pay any bills, the not normal what those bad guys doing at touristic places, even they do the same with locals we truly fed up from their behavior it destroyed the Egyptians image and the tourism's too..

I have been living in Egypt for five years +, and this seems to me the most fair (and positive) series discussing Egypt. You really tried to understand all sides and showed an authentic experience. Mindset impacts any journey, you can't enter a country expecting it to be like your own 👍

We will be travelling there a week on Monday and can’t wait. We have watched many vlogs and I would say have all been fair. It’s the most research I’ve done before any trip away. We will be with a tourist group which may be slightly better but at least we know what to expect and are more or less prepared. So excited though to visit Egypt.

Hi Gareth! To be fair, everything you described happens to Egyptians as well, not just tourists. It’s a way of life that developed from poverty and desperation for many to feed their families. Most Egyptians are harmless, all you gotta do is ignore and keep walking & every now & then say/do something kind (tips for example), and you will receive the kindness back ten-fold. That’s what I did back when I lived there & I was no tourist. Otherwise, everything you said was on-point! Truly a very fair & comprehensive review of visiting Egypt.
Edit: Wow! Thanks for the likes everyone! I have to admit, I visited Egypt more recently and I understand what everyone is saying in the comments re harassment, pushy locals etc. I am sad about the state of things as it hasn’t always been like this and while I do believe that Egypt’s people are for the most part harmless, I get that as a tourist on vacation nobody wants to be constantly hovered over, even without ill intent.
I hope things will get better because Egypt and a lot of Egyptians deserve better, but tourists also deserve to have peace of mind & have their personal space respected while on vacation.

I thought this was one of those scary UA-cam videos but I’m only 7 minutes in and this guy is keeping it all facts and so real. So into it.
I think this is one of the best UA-cam videos I’ve seen.
As an Egyptian 🇪🇬, I see that unfortunately these scammers are harming the reputation of the country, even ordinary Egyptians, who are not sellers. I often try to provide assistance, for example, in crossing the road because it is somewhat difficult for foreigners if there is no traffic light, but some people are afraid or suspect that I am like salesmen, and will ask for money, specially if giving a free gift. In fact, all I wanted to provide was humanitarian assistance without financial compensation. Just a smile would be enough. Perhaps I also need help someday in a certain country, and I find someone to help me without asking. this is how things should be going. thanks for everyone visits our country and make it more beauty with diversity of tourists.❤❤

Excellent video. We were in Egypt in October 2021 and everything you said was spot on. Go prepared and you'll have a blast. Regarding filming; you are welcome to take photos anywhere with a cell phone camera. You can also video with your cell phone, except in some temples. A guide will tell you where you can or can't video. Do not video or photograph the police under any circumstances. Second thoughts: I wish I'd had an extra day in both Aswan and Luxor. Luxor is gorgeous.Overview: Egyptian people are incredibly friendly and outgoing. I made memories there that will be with me forever, but seriously, I can't wait to go back. Let me give a shout out to Memphis Tours in Cairo, for arranging our trip. They have great guides and fantastic drivers. I never felt nervous even one time, in Cairo traffic.
You can video with your cell as much as you want - you only need to purchase a special ticket if you use a proper camera. Police - that's common sense, however, these guys love money so if you tip the Tourist Police riding camels in Gizeh they'll let you take pics of them. Just ask first and negotiate. Hell, a cop even sold me his baret....
Other people report that they have their cell phones confiscated at they airport on arrival. They had to pay an €80 fee to get them back.

Gareth, I totally agree with everything you just mentioned in your vlog. In 2019, I traveled to Egypt with a friend who is from Alexandria. Traveling with a local made it very easy to move around..Doesn't mean that we didn't have issues. But, it was a lot smoother to communicate and navigate with someone who is from the region. I highly recommend traveling to Egypt. The sights, beautiful and kind people. Egypt, will always have a special place in my heart..Thanks again for your vlogs.

Gareth I would have to disagree as a female traveler these level of harassment and scamming is awful. I appreciate that people need to make a living and much of these behaviours are motivated by poverty. However I have visited other African countries with more poverty and Egypt takes the biscuit. I have been to Egypt twice and each visit I had prepaid packaged deals, guides etc so no need for extras yet I went through all this and was scammed even by the hotel that I had to call head office in France to help deal with my complaints. The second time I visited I went to Sharm and deliberately booked a 5 star Emirati hotel resort where safeguarded from these behaviours. Don’t get me wrong Egypt is a beautiful country and not all bad but the subjective reviews from the other UA-camrs are true too.
I had planned on going to Egypt soon, and had heard about hassles. They are apparently 20 times worse than I thought. I don't pay $$$ thousands of dollars to be stressed out on A VACATION. Skipping Egypt now.

I just came back from Egypt. From the moment I arrived, they tried to steal from me. The currency exchange teller at the airport gave me the wrong exchange. I got stopped but customs and they wanted a bribe. Once I got to the hotel, they had the wrong room. I reserved a room with pyramid views and they didn’t have it once I got there. I was constantly harassed and couple of times the skimmers got in my face trying to intimidate me into tipping them or buying their services. I didn’t - stood my ground but could’ve escalated. Walked j to a store close got here pyramids and the owner closed one of the doors while I was inside. I’ve travel all over and I’ve never felt so uncomfortable traveling abroad. Will never go back. ✌️
It seems like such a place of extremes - people either have the best time, or the worst - or sometimes perhaps they can't even make up their minds about it. And as much as I hate to admit it, someone like me would probably be toast - and I'm not even talking about the scorching heat.

I’m half egyptian though I was born in the USA. Honestly, I am ashamed at the behavior of some people in Cairo. My apologies to you. As my cousin always says: Egypt is a pain but a beautiful one…which is what I have come to accept.

When Egyptians living abroad travelling to Egypt notice and point out the same issues you pointed at in this video (like begging for tips 24/7 and force selling) we get told to go back to wherever we live..I’m so glad you’re highlighting these things so that it may be an embarrassment and the government would take action hopefully someday

SOME issues....? Don't make us laugh mannnnny issues including the people... I'm Egyptian and i want Egypt to change not much but no sexual harassment and for it to be more organized... the rest the people that live in Egypt can fight for but as there are no men in Egypt, it will never happen. maybe you have not traveled the world but Egyptians are hated throughout the world, the crap people from Egypt who migrate to foreign countries and have dealt with people with the Egyptian way has brought us a very very bad reputation and i mean the men. So please wake up yes many countries have good and bad but Egypt has much more bad than good. So because there are other countries that are bad Egypt has to be the same? the bad in Egypt is lowest of the low compared to other countries. you have to accept Egypt has many issues and many major issues.

Also I really appreciate that you gave clear answers to some really important questions, particularly when it comes to tipping! I've heard over and over that you need to tip everyone but no one ever says how much is appropriate. You're doing a really great job. I'm going to watch some of your other videos now!

All Egyptians watching this video are so GRATEFUL for your honesty, Gareth. I mean, you didn't have to do this guide. But you still did, and that shows your amazingly good intentions of talking about the elephant in the room upon visiting Egypt!
The gist of Egypt is dealing with salesmen who are not ill-intentioned but just trying to survive. Once you get over that, Egypt becomes a whole other place. That one part where you said that you and Tyler took it as a game at one point is exactly how Egyptians treat salesmen so you understood the assignment lol! You sure did explain it well. NO BS!

"Not ill-intentioned" is no excuse. It is still frightening to be threatened and scammed, as many people report. A solo female is often harassed. NOT SAFE.

WE spent 2 weeks in Egypt just prior to pandemic and had a blast! On a private tour ! and a local friend. We did almost all from Cairo, the Nile cruise and Pyramids but also did the Christian monateries and Alexandria and it was all wonderful sheltered in our cocoon and protected by our guides in each city. Previous independent visit to Morocco made me choose an escorted tour in Egypt. I could see how it would be a nightmare for elderly travelers like us.. Great tips and "keep on traveling" as Rick Steves says !

This was great! As an Egyptian who have lived in USA for 30 years, I found this to be very useful and accurate and reflects exactly my own experiences whenever I go and visit. As a matter of fact, I learned a few good tips for my next trip ;-)
This is genuinely the most HELPFUL travel guide I've seen hands down. Your debrief is brilliant: The hardest thing to know when planning a trip is what you don't know-and won't know until you're there/it's too late. And not everyone has the opportunity/means to visit a place like Egypt twice, so what a shame it would be for something that could have been prevented to end up ruining/negatively affecting your trip. This is the kind of nuanced info that we used to rely on travel agents/print articles for.
Re tips: Baksheesh is basic international diplomacy. Why not tip or give gifts when when it's affordable to us yet helpful + courteous towards locals? I always factor in a lump sum + I find out what's fair/reasonable-from helpful videos like this-before going. I also buy nice, affordable souvenirs from my local dollar stores-anything that's light/doesn't take up much space like hats/caps/kerchiefs, etc w/a Canadian theme. I've found that cultures that are very different from mine seem to appreciate the stereotypes, so I usually go for something with a Moose or "Eh?" on there.
Question: 1. Suggestion on how to find a female guide? 2. How do you know for certain that those were safe Ubers? As a woman, I've heard too many stories-from the US, UK even-about women being assaulted/raped by Uber/fake Uber drivers. '
Tip: When travelling somewhere where either language or....cultures are different, I get hotels, services, etc to commit to a price in writing or in a phone video if that's copacetic. No commitment, no deal. This is an extremely helpful video, thank you!

This is the single truthful review of Egypt that I have seen so far! Thank you Gareth.
Respect, the way you blend with the locals everywhere you go shows what kind of a person you are , a true universal citizen who doesn't have a singular perspective. I have Egyptian roots and I know about the corruption there and I got scammed a lot whenever i go visit my relatives there 😂, but in the end it's what it is .

@@GarethLeonard Actually I'm in Egypt right now! Lived here for 3 years and still see it as my home. I have lived in many countries before and next to my 'own' country which is The Netherlands, I would choose Egypt as a very great country to visit and even live!
I wanna say that even us as Egyptians experience the same thing in regards with salesmen and the taxi prices but as Egyptians we know how to deal with.

I'm American but my parents are from Egypt. This is the most fair assessment of Egypt I've seen. It's true that Egyptians can be major scammers (the hustlers) but the people of Egypt can also be really kind. Your advice was detailed and unbiased. I subscribed! I told my American white husband that he will get a culture shock when he comes to Egypt but he doesnt believe me! lol

That's a shame really, I imagine it's a major stain on an otherwise amazing country to visit (I haven't been). How did it get so out-of-hand, and is anything currently being done to curb this problem?
@@rigelb9025 yeah, like there is more police around that warns tourists, but the problem is the police start being annoying around the pyramids
@@rigelb9025 after 2011 revolution some people became poor because of economic crisis but the government started to put some in the prison lately but believe me we are much more than these scammers

Wages are soooo low and some people depend on tourism to make a living
Government has been taking action since last year and there has been a great difference
very realistic and honest review, as an Egyptian, i salute you, this is truly a very good reference for anyone who wants to visit Egypt, and having someone local on ground, can definitely make a lifetime difference in terms of the experience.

I was in Egypt for 18 days. The scamming is nonstop. The hassle is never ending. It’s impossible to walk around with a friend without being hassled or interrupted every few minutes. The sights are the best in the world, but the people made me want to travel elsewhere.
I am Egyptian and i get hassled when i visit touristic parts, this is how people here have been trading for thousands of years, it's part of the culture
Even what you call "Scams" is probably just vendors negotiaiting the prices, that's how the whole world had been trading before price tages were invented 200 years ago
@@djehuti5571 No. When I say scams I’m not talking about haggling. I’ve traveled all over so I’m used to that. I’m talking about people blowing whistles and acting like officials, people redirecting people to backdoor entrances, people saying sights are closed so they can take you somewhere else, taxis driving in circles so they can charge more, people following you for miles and endlessly hassling you hoping that you give in and give them business. The scams in Egypt are endless. It’s exhausting. Don’t get me wrong I loved seeing the sights. I’m glad I went, but the people make it very difficult to enjoy and I would caution a lot of less adventurous travelers to stay away from Egypt until these practices change. Most people want peace of mind when they travel, not hassle.
My friend and I just returned from 12 days in Egypt on May 3rd 2022 and will definitely go back. We are two indigenous Americans (Navajo) 65+ females and we went on our own. I watched Sonny’s video before we went but it didn’t matter. We hired local guides which helped but we knew about scammers and we were scammed but it’s all part of the adventure. We loved the people and took everything in stride knowing they depend on tourism. Never tipped so many people in my life but it was fun. Your video is correct on every level. Thanks for sharing.

You didn't judge the whole country based on the bad you're actually even trying to understand the reasons behind the rules instead of calling us stupid or Stoned Age like Sonny said. You didn't force your opinion and tell people not to go. you let people know all the details to decide if you they would like to visit or not. you didn't spread hate. you're not self entitled. unfortunately that's not gonna get you millions of views because there's no fake propaganda and over the top titles, yet you chose to be truthful and honest. Nice information explanation and caution from what to expect and avoid from. Yes that might be true to Best Ever Food of Sonny , they are bigger production , so they met unfortunate circumstances.
Sonny also has a very different mindset and expectations. I hated his negative attitude about Egypt. I stopped watching him because of it.

As a frequent traveller, i would say that you are on point. Such countries like Egypt where you need to be constantly vigilant against scams/tricks, is very tiring to travel to because you cant let down your guard. It’s so tiring to confirm and double confirm prices again and again just to make sure you dont get scammed. Not to mention the constant need to smile and say no many times to avoid getting into difficult situations.
Places like egypt are difficult to navigate through and as such, not recommended to first time travellers (outside developed nations) BUT it also means that you are going to have an interesting experience, what you cannot get in other easy to travel countries. So understand the risk and rewards when you are visiting such countries.
Try Egypt..you will sure love it..never been to place like there…where everything ( i mean it) is there…starting from ancient places to skyscrapers…it is an incredible mix that is indulging with mostly kind peaceful people.
Too Much Stress, when I am supposed to be relaxing on my Holiday. Not worth it. I'm not Paying to be stressed.

An Asian here and I was an exchange student back in uni, so you can imagine if it’s hard for westerners to be in Egypt, it was three times harder for us Asian. But like you said, try to keep an open mind, look beyond everything, not going to lie, EGYPT IS ONE OF THE BEST PLACES I’VE BEEN WITH THE BEST PEOPLE! @@OmarJustice I love the hospitality I see being displayed by your people just here in the YT comments section, I mean, it's almost got me in tears for God's sake. I personally doubt I will ever make it to Egypt, mainly for practical and perhaps some safety reasons, but you generally appear to be a very welcoming bunch. I would imagine a fresh-faced tourist who just got off the plane makes a prime target for the city's many grifters though.

Thank you for a very balanced review. I am Egyptian living in the US and your assessment is spot on. You have mentioned all the positive and also the negative aspects of Egypt. The people are very social and want to have fun, on the other hand there is a lot of poverty and hardships that they face and they try and get by with whatever they can to survive.
