was just going to say the same thing as Roger regarding the Aerides...in fact mine is in full bloom and was gonna try to make a short video about it later today to capture it's beauty...Mine is bareroot..has been for a year since i have had it...i try to miss the roots or dunk it daily although i can admit this winter it mightve got water once or twice a month..wow that Ornithaphlora is fantastic.. i have a small one that was ignored all winter and it is currently in new growth..so i will have to pay more attention to it..i love the long lasting flowers of it..Happy growing!
I would give the Aerides a good rinse off (and the basket) and put it straight back in with 'nothing' or at best a few large pieces of something just to hold it in place and then find the warmest place you have where it doesn't get any direct sun. This time of year, I would water it by dunking for 5-10 minutes or so every day. (Now I'm just checking you don't know where I live in case it dies!!!) Have a great time in Paris.
Cheers Roger, thanks for the pointers. I have a rough idea of where you live, it's not far. I have a very particular set of skills. If it dies I will find you! I hope it makes it. I would like to get this guy to at least half enjoy it's life. My Angreacum longicolor blooming loves the greenhouse. I hoped similar care of the Aerides would produce the same results. Let's see what happens with the Poll.
Have a great holiday! Hmm, if the aerides is improving with increased moisture retentive medium, then perhaps keep her in a basket, but add a little chunky bark and charcoal to the mix
Hello Denise, thanks for the pointers. All of this is useful information. I will see what the results of the Poll and pot/mount/throw away accordingly. 😁🤞👍
for the aerides i'd agree with what you said about having less small substrate around the roots and putting it in a basket , so when you water it, the roots dry quickly, in essence i'd give it like regular vanda care with loads of sunlight ! but i'm new to orchids ~ so take from that what you will. xoxoL.
Thanks for the pointers. I did give it higher light levels last year. It started going really red and looked miserable. I agree Vanda type care but lower light levels I reckon.
I don't have an aerides but I do have Rhyncostylis Retusa and some vanda species. If the root is not good, I would suggest mounting on a piece if wood, add a slight water retentive but airy media on some parts of the roots (not all). Hang it on a place where it can have air flow from the front and the back. I find this kind of airflow very important for vandacious orchids. Give sufficient soft sunlight + warm and humid weather. I water the vandas twice a day, at 7 am and 5 pm, by spraying. I also provide calmag and vitamin B1 for plants.
Nice little update. Nothing wrong with your jimjams they look the biz. No idea on plant vote culture. Kingianum is looking well and will reward you with some blooms .Speciosum is also doing well the roots look good plant seems happy.Dont worry about the vids mate ,family and garden first 😉. Enjoy your romantic break in Paris with Mrs Olivers Greenhouse 😚🍷
Thanks Vince. We can't wait. We are staying very close to the Botanical Gardens so will definitely be going for a visit. I see they have a big greenhouse!
All looking good Oliver, I fully understand time restraints when trying to manage a home life and keep abreast with the hobby of a greenhouse and produce videos, how do you find the time LOL, looking forward to the next episode.
Hi Oliver, following this topic with high interest, i have a baby Aerides and right now it stand light, but shadowed by bigbrother Vanda. I have it in a little open pot with just abit moss to keep it moist, coz it's so small. But i can see it's growing.
I am excited about you input regarding the Aerides. Please comment and use the Poll in the video. #pyjamalife🤘
I have a dozen or so orchids growing on rocks, it works really well for some species. yours seems really happy.

Oliver's Greenhouse yes it will be nice.Hope the weather is nice and the journey goes smooth #Oliverontour 👍
Your greenhouse is so perfect for bulbos. They look so natural in the green moss. It makes me want to buy some bulbos.

i have all my vandas im that type of setup... works amazing
payamas fit with the dreadlocks and tats👍👍👍
Mount it on a piece of wood with a little bit of sphagnum - that’s how I grow mine and they’re doing very well
Sounds like a good idea.
