- Welcome back for another Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon Season 2 video. In this video, I will be talking about George R.R. Martin's new NotABlog update. In a recent post, George R.R. Martin shared his thoughts about House of the Dragon's second season. He revealed what he thinks about some of the show's new additions, like Helaena's gift for prophecy, as well as the addition of the dog to the Blood & Cheese scenes. George R.R. Martin also sort of hinted at his dislike for the Blood & Cheese conclusion. He also mentioned how the exclusion of Maelor Targaryen might cause issues later. What does George R.R. Martin think of House of the Dragon Season 2? Check out what he said in this video. Thanks for watching!

I completely agree that Paddy Considine should have won an Emmy. He crushed it.

Maelor the missing 😂😂😂 love it
Removing the other boy-child meant when the mother chose one boy over the other, and who the assassins' killed made that much more of an impact. Instead, there were two kids and she chose the boy not the girl - which wasn't as much of an impact. "You hear that little boy? Yer momma wants you dead!" that line was missing, and yet I thought it made such a gut-punch in the animated version of the Dance of the Dragons video
But that ruins helaena for the rest of the show. Maybe they did not want to ruin the character just yet. Also Maelor doesnt exist in the show so that scene could NEVER be like in the books. I understand they removed him, because Maelor's death cannot be shown in TV. A kid destroyed and dismembered by a crowd is not TV friendly. This in turn affects the Blood and Cheese scene.
@@Alejojojo6yes indeed people seem to not understand that children cannot perform in such an environment it’s truly diabolical
The original story is very lurid and silly. It’s better in the film.
@@Alejojojo6 Yes Mealor is one character that I don't mind missing. I was hoping in season 1 they would remove Joff too (given how young he is in the show). GRRM sometimes creates child characters just to give them horrid deaths.
@Alejojojo6 it can't be shown but it can be alluded to and then explained. His death is a motivator for Daeron's actions as well. I feel like they're taking the heft and the true gut-punch out of a lot of this grisly tale just by omitting Maelor
For those who may not know, "A Sound Of Thunder " is a short story by Ray Bradbury, In a book called Golden Apples Of The Sun, one of the best collections of short stories ever made.
Appreciate the info!
I was lucky enough to take one of Ray Bradbury's writing classes. The man is mythic.
@@jessjess23brooks89 I would have loved to do that
@@willisix2554 I was completely lucky. He started the entire department in my college decades ago, but I had no idea he occasionally did a class here and there at that time. I somehow booked a spot while choosing my third semester classes. He is patient, brilliant, extremely creative, but definitely no nonsense. He could always tell when you weren't giving your all and had no problem calling you out in front of the entire class.
I think I may have seen that movie lol
You can definitely tell that GRRM is a lot more pleased with the direction HOTD takes vs GOT.
I definitely agree with blood and cheese although for the average show watcher it was horrific.
Indeed. It was sufficient.
Literally, the ONLY thing that they took out that I seriously wish that they had left in would have been Helaena having to make the "Sophie's Choice" between Jahaerys and Maelor. Seeing a small child getting decapitated would have been just too over the top for me personally, as I am both a mother and grandmother.
Nobody wants to see the decapitation, they could have panned it away like almost every decapitation ever done in a movie even Neds stark decapitaions the screen was panned away, the problem with that scene is healenas low emotional and verbal range and the fact there was no choice as well. @nancytipton7602
@@nancytipton7602you cannot get children to act in that way
@@nancytipton7602 i'm pretty sure Helaena does have to choose between her children in the scene.
I completely agree with George about the Butterfly Effect. Sometime you change one little thing and think it's no big deal but then when you reach a point in the story, you realise it make no sense cause of the little thing that was changed. I thought about this particular thing about GoT a few years ago. In that sometime they kept the bullet points and endgame but since they changed things, it made no sense to reach those points with what they had written so far(Dany being the biggest example of this).
BreAnne travelling all over to find the girls (HBO version) but it didn't mean or change anything. Just an excuse to fight the Hound.
This why the Show is it own CANON!!!! The Books VERSION is an little different I believe that Jon is a Dayne and Stark not a Targaryen.
@@sanitizerwilson1599 I guess well'll see. Faegon is supposed to be the antagonist of Dany in the book and what will make her unleash instead of Jon.
There were signs of her madness since the first season most simply couldn't accept because they were played for fools by writers using there own racism against them via white savior trope
@@sanitizerwilson1599 pretty sure George allowed them to make the show because they guessed Jon's parents correctly.
I believe George is pissed about the B&C scene..that’s his work his artwork stick to the script that is a very crucial pivotal point of the story as a whole
He isn’t as much pissed as he is underwhelmed compared to the other scenes he was praising.
The show couldn’t do an exact reproduction because it is literally illegal with respect to child protection laws to have child actors in gruesome scenes like that. HBO isn’t risking jail time just to keep the book details the same.
I think the main problem is that, while the end result of Helaena and Aegon losing a child and causing trauma, the way the scene unfolded was underwhelming for the viewers.
The dog scene had me closer to tears than any episode of GoT. Helaena's changes have been so good I forgot she wasn't that way in the book, I dunno, I guess with the entire dynamic going on being raised by mother of the year alongside those two brothers, being a happy cheerful friendly person wouldn't have really made much sense to me.
As for Martin waiting until later to discuss his issues with B&C, I kind of think it has a lot to do with the butterfly effect, I think hes waiting to see how much it affects things later before he says anything, maybe because so far the changes and additions before it have worked so well that maybe he's just waiting to see if this change ends up in a bigger payoff?
I think it’s nice for the “gardener” George to see the wonderful blossoms that his story rooted 😊
I am waiting for him to talk about the vilification of the greens and the virtue washing of the blacks, that has nothing to do with the source materials
the point of HOTD is that it was a pointless civil war against two parties, not a battle between good and evil as I fear the show runners are steering the show into
Well I don't think that greens were as evil as they were in books.
Alicent is simply evil stepmom. Aemond is Phsycopath, idiot, mass murderer. Daeron also a mass murderer though! There's a little Justification behind it.
I’ve heard a few people mention this, but having read the Dying of the Dragons section of the book I don’t get it. I think personally that both sides are more evil in the book, and the shows is providing everyone with more humanity and nuance. What changes do you think vilify the greens and virtue-wash the blacks?
I think that since a lot of these characters change over the course of the war, it's not worth commenting on yet until the series is finished. There's no way Rhaenyra will continue to be this saint-like pacifist she's been so far after Jace is killed and the two dragonseeds betray her. In my opinion, she has to become monstrous by the time she actually rules King's Landing, otherwise the whole story is pointless.
Alicent not with Cole, and Helaena in Alicent's room with the children-this is how the scene from the book was expected to unfold. The buildup was there, but the heartbreak of Helaena and its impact on her, as portrayed in the book, was missed in the episode and the following one. No, I didn't want to see a child decapitated; hearing it was enough. Helaena having to choose one of her sons, with all of them awake and present in the moment, was also missing, as well as Maelor. This would have given the impact we were expecting after the ending of Season 1. As an audience, we loved how they did the episode, but as a reader of the book, I thought it was going to be more heartwrenching as it was to read.
I cant imagine he’s happy with Daeron magically existing after the character was never shown or referenced until he’s already an adult dragon rider in Oldtown. It was obvious they didn’t think about his character being relevant until season 2… that being said, Helaena was adapted amazingly and Im glad they made her so much more interesting
Dog for the win! ❤️ Deserves a 🏆 🥉
the fact that he says there's stuff he can't talk about with the blood & cheese scene, and then uses the word 'nonce' right after it.. he could be eluding to the fact that in the books they hinted that they would do more than just kill the child. if you know, you know
I've got to agree, Rhys Ifans has given an absolutely gripping and august performance as Otto Hightower. And the scene with Otto and Aegon is just phenomenal.
I took the dog being the last to know about the tunnels. But I like this take too !
Its understandable he likes the good and smaller changes added to the characters or plot because they are in fact good and bring more to the screen for audiences to see. If the show runner deviates too much from the books GRRM will probably call him out in the future.
They should show helaena riding a dragon just being how she was in the books.
I hope he works with as many writers as possible. Maybe even trust one to help finish his main series.
George did an ayahuasca ceremony last Christmas to break his writer's block on WoW. It worked! Book will be done by end of year. He is just working on which order he wants the ending to come. All of the chapters have been fully drafted out and just need organized and tightened up. Unfortunately, this will be the last book in the series. @@ModMax69Where did you get all this info from? Do you have a source? This doesn’t line up with anything I’ve heard about WoW
That was a harsh episode already, but the dog waiting at the end, that was the hit that put it over the top.

Dude, it's been 13 years. Aren't you tired? 😂 If I were you, I'd just enjoy whatever content we get from his universe. Dwelling on a book that’s taken over a decade to write won’t make you any happier.

The Dog ❤❤❤
Maelor missing creates an issue with who is Aegon’s heir if he truly is cut: Jaehaera or Aemond. It’s one of several questions I have from the 2nd season and especially the most recent episode that I hope get explained at some point.
Aemond. The entire premise of the black council is male primogenitor
I know a few extras in England and they tell me that the dog is a nightmare to work with. It has to have the biggest trailer, it's always late to the set and stinking of alcohol. They lost almost a full day of production because the M&Ms were the wrong color and quantity. I'll give the dog credit for it's acting chops but please it could leave it's ego at the door.
😂 that's awesome 😂
yea we got robbed from the blood and cheese scene
I think they watered down B$C to protect the young actors
Maelor being absent sets the assumption that Aemond might not be entirely loyal to the green's cause and is out to get the throne for himself.
I kinda like the change since Aemond became the direct counterpart of Daemon in the other side of the conflict. Both second sons, both stronger than their King/Queen, vying for the throne themselves.
i agree with everything he said. the Blood and Cheese scene had to be tamed down for TV viewing because it was too graphic and really violent in the book.
I personally think they should follow the book 100% nothing wrong with adding things to the show to make it better but I don't agree with leaving out characters from the books
“I personally think they should follow the books 100%” I respect your ability to be wrong.
Is maelor just fully cut from the show? I don’t understand why they would do that? It changes a major dynamic, namely making Aemond the legitimate heir after Jaeherys’ death, when it the book Maelor is the new heir.
If he doesn’t want characters left out of the adaptations, he needs to stop filling his stories with so many superfluous characters and plot lines. He, of all people should know what’s involved in adapting, producing and even watching a show like this; there’s only so much you can do with a TV budget, with TV run times and with an audience’s ability to follow a story.
Obviously, the richness of the lore and the complexity of these stories is a lot of what people love about the books, so of course he shouldn’t change that, but they’re also MASSIVE. Which is a large part of why he, ahem, STILL HASN’T FINISHED 7:55 THE ORIGINAL STORY THAT SPAWNED ALL THIS.
Not every little detail can go into the shows. Stop critiquing the showrunners’ choices about what to leave out, when you don’t seem capable of leaving _anything_ out of your own books.
I am A book reader and I love with improvisation of the show. Martin working with show runner which is why the show is still solid.
About the blood and cheese, I believe HBO could make it to the show precisely 100% like a book, but the original material is just too dark for the show eventhough game of thrones itself for sure having lot of cruel scene if they had to adapted the scene like a book, that would be making a conrtoversy.
And I love the improvement bout Criston cole and alicent leading to eps 2, and eps 2 showing all every character in every situation that they are all fucked up making eps 2 as solid as game of thrones season 1.
I'm still trying to figure out how they did the dog kick scene as it look so authentic.
100% agree with everything George said, good and bad.
Let’s use reverse psychology and never mention that GoT ending will be his legacy since he may never finish the book. No day is guaranteed.
He said so much good and yet people’s just gonna focus on the tiny critiques. Like grow up
I think that my only issue w/ blood& cheese are if Helena's Character will be affected as she was in the books, she was stricken with grief. In HOTD S2E3 (to me) it looks as if Helena might be finding her way to get passed it, which I think would change events moving forward with her character...
I however am in no way pressed about NOT actually seeing a child beheaded and watching their Mother scream and hold her childs lifeless/headless body... NO, THANKS. and to the people who wanted something more gruesome, you're weird, seek help.
Yeh she’s a different character in the show, and I actually prefer it because in the novel she’s just “there” as a pleasant young queen, and does nothing after B&C. Although I think she’s meant to be a bit detached from reality because of all the dragon dreams and visions, which is why she comes across as so disconnected from her son’s death.
I don't think anyone wanted gruesome. They wanted psychological horror. The choice. The murder could still happen off screen. More people were annoyed by the dog being kicked than the child murder.
Completely agree.
And people who wanted to see that gruesome take are living in a fantasy world.
In the real world, it is literally illegal to put child actors in scenes like those. The showrunner even gave an interview detailing talking about the legal issues and why they had to change the book details for the show.
And yet people are whining that the scene was ruined because it wasn’t 100% from the books.
No one is going to jail just to please book purists.
Yeah, I have to admit Aegon and Otto's scene was spectacular. Otto was especially great in it
I think he said his issue, Maegor is missing.
Well he’s correct 👍 tbh so many terrific scenes grrm what’s it close to his writing? / books that it…
The issue with Maelor missing is Maelor’s death is ultimately what brings her down.
This doesen’t come even close to the first three seasons of GOT.
It's hard to imagine Aegon is the elder brother to Aemond given the size of the actor playing Aemond. In the books it is said Aemond is half the size of Aegon, but he seemed to inherit Viserys' height I suppose. My favorite Targaryen is definitely Daemon who I didn't like in the beginning but now I really love his character development. This Dance of the Dragon is such a tragedy 😢 for all the Targaryen kinfolk and their dragons.
Maybe the issue with Blood and Cheese might come back.
Maybe we will see what Daemon actually said, or didn’t say.
Maybe it’ll be in a future episode.
Maybe he likes it but it’s different than he envisioned...
...but maybe that’s all I’ll say for now.
He already said it was a mistake

It’s funny that people ignore the many many things George praised about S2 and is only focusing on the B&C part which btw he’s mostly pointing it towards the forever upset book purists who raised issues about it not himself. People also forget he’s co creator and that he mentioned back in December that him and Ryan discussed Seasons 3 and 4. GRRM clearly likes HOTD and likes what Ryan is doing.

@@Hash_kw that's my point but I'm holding on
I get annoyed when people complain about blood and cheese. Game of thrones went absolutely vile at times, but at no point did it ever have a scene where it graphically murdered a young child the way the book scene called for. Killing kids under 5 was always done off screen or with enough distance that the viewer didn't see it. At minimum it wasn't graphic- even when Ceresi ordered the guards to to kill babies in the brothel.
It's not really a suprise this was were HBO drew the line. Audiences didn't like scene in Dr.Sleep where the kid is tortured to death, they wouldn't have liked having to watch a much younger kid have his head cut off while he was awake and his mother, brother, sister and gradnmother watched on.
Not to mention that three child actors would have been traimatized out of their minds (and with all of the heat right now around abuse of minors on set we cannot ignore that).
All and all, they made the right call.
I couldn't handle this watered-down version even, when I realized what was about to happen I muted and wouldn't look. I wish it was possible to unsee things, but thankfully this full scene won't be stored in my memory bank 😅
Rhys Ifans is one of my absolute favorite actors. He was awesome in this episode.
He might be the best actor on the show
Some of you are ridiculously dogmatic about things that in the great scheme of things really dont matter. The 'Blood & Cheese' scene got changed. Bitching about it for the next year is wasted energy and makes one question if you even have lives.

I honestly thought could have been pregnant with Maelor at the time of the attack, but I guess they compensated it with Helaena's whole breakdown, her fear, confusion, and doubt about whether to give them Jaeharys or not, their version of her is like a mentally disable young woman, with the comprehension of a child to some extend. In other words, her gift fried her brain so she doesn't process some events properly. (Is just my interpretation, don't come at me because of it)
As for the dog... Well... after GOT's Red Wedding and the massacre of Ghost and Nymeria's siblings, that kick didn't surprised me. Offscreen, I'm very happy to know that the pup is out of the streets and has a loving home. The best boy of the Seven Kingdoms.
I heard rumors that she might be pregnant with Maelor this season.
Nettles season 3 as Daemons bastard daughter
I think you're spot on! Helaena is a new kind of GOT universe character...on the screen. In ASOIAF Daenys Targaryen, known as "the Dreamer," was the daughter of the dragonlord Aenar Targaryen. She gave the warning that saved their House, and they came to Dragonstone and escaped the Doom of Valyria. Viserys I considered himself a dreamer, as is Helaena. Another connotation with the moon, somnambulance, "dreaming' half awake or asleep. Visions. Dany also is a dreamer in the books far more than tv GOT. Rhaegar also was a dreamer. As for simple, I agree. Not sure what kind of simple she is. She's aware. She responds to save her remaining child. She speaks clearly under stress. She is triggered to panic by the crowds of mourners. I want more of her.
GRRM is spot on
I like the book version of that scene better
He said it was superb. All you had to do was read his text. Word for word and repeat it verbally kind of like the show runners yet you fail.
I did read what he said, and then I gave my opinion at the end.
This is how UA-cam videos work. Do you really think he loved everything about that scene? You must not know George then... He's been telling us how he feels about these changes for years...
The acting is excellent 💯
Game of thrones was better. George writes from a different character pov every chapter and that adds to the intensity of the show. Every scene was memorable.
In house of the dragon they follow the standard way of writing a story. Planting moments here and there to explain the audience something that they should show and not tell
I don't care I want WINDS!
As I watch this show, I realize that I see it as someone's idea of what really could have happened. Every change (other than missing characters) I remember what Little Finger said. " What is the throne? It's the thousand blades of Aegon and the story we tell over and over, till we forget IT'S A LIE.
I have said this in other posts. I think GRRM probably isnt happy about all the changes. But understanding that the show runners are trying to make a show that pleases the masses without breaking too many tv laws if you will . I have already seen posts that condemn the raw story being told. Of course as always this is just my opinion.
It’s “What is the realm”
I believe it's the opposite. Remember that the books are just historiographical accounts by people in-universe, so in some ways, the TV series is more canonical than the books. We are watching what "really" happened, not second or third hand accounts.
@p-j-y-d 🙂it sounds like we are saying the same thing. When I say it's someone's idea I refer to the writers. 😀
Ultimately it's GRRM'S story, and someday he may give a story that connects the dots in a clearer. But till then we have the TV shows.
@@Dragonfire3194 oops sorry lol
The scene in the books was more messed up. Bc blood n cheese were more sadistic. They traumatised Maelor but just saying a single phrase, and that laments the future relationship he will have with Haelena. Here it seems Maelor doesn't exist.
GOT > House of 🐉
Nah
Deleting or merging characters does the plot of any show a great disservice. They’re in the plot for a reason. 😑
When you only have 8 hours of story, sometimes you have to do that :/ TV has less freedom than a book
I think GRRM's 'issue' with Maelor being missing is this-now we know that it was Jaehaera that was killed for sure and NOT Jaehaerys. THIS show is brilliant!
He’s not going to finish the book, is he 😑. He’s doing everything but write
let the man talk about the adaption of his work 😔
Think you can do better, should ask him if you can take over for him 😂😂😂
If he’s not writing the books HBO should just pay him and let him be in charge of making the shows since that’s what everyone wants anyway
@@braddollahite Most people probably could do it successfully, it’s just George rr Martin writing style makes it so unbelievably hard. If he wrote with strategy and thousands of notes from the ending to beginning, plans and etc, then he would be done by now. His method takes time growing the story but time he doesn’t not have much longer…
@@braddollahite He is close to 80, a professional writer, and has never finished any of his stories. He has never finished a series and has started multiple. That can't be a coincidence
I wonder what happend to this egg? I hope its around somewhere waiting to be found in the future - "Maelor possessed a dragon egg, that was pale green with sworls of silver."
Blood kicked the dog not Cheese .. I would think Cheese would have taken issue with the dog kicking but he is a bit cowardly so maybe not . Top notch acting from the dog though .
Exactly, I love HOTD but no Episode from this show beats any Episode from GOT, like Attack on Castle Black, Hardholm, Battle of the Bastards, just to name a few.
Oh come on, HotD is close second to Got. It might not be exactly as good but it's almost there and there's 2 and a half seasons worth of episodes more to come.
This tells me your a person who like more of the epic battles than the brilliant dialogue episodes. Well for me its really the memorable dialogues that tops the best episodes/moments of this world. So non of the episodes your mentioning are on the top of my list.
Fr GoT seasons 1-4 is the greatest show ever
@@onlyme064 oh trust me there’s plenty of great dialogue filled episodes, like when Rob finds out his Ned has died he cries as he cuts up the tree with his sword and vows to March on kings landing, or when Jon meets Mance for the first time, Stannis offers to Jon the Stark Name and to March to Kings landing with him, or when Gendry meets Jon talking about “their fathers being best friends and winning many battles”, “King of the North” scene had probably the best dialogue of the entire series, or Arya with Jaqen H’gar had plenty of great dialogue scenes. And again just to name a few with plenty of more great dialogue scenes. Trust me GOT kills HOTD as much as the Battles do.
I fear George is gonna join the night king's army before he finished winds of winter 😒
Elements from "A Dream of Spring" have been incorporated into WoW. I'm just happy it is coming out!!!
@@ModMax69lmao George will release the books when he has passes away so he can enjoy death threats in peace.
@@ModMax69so it's not longer The winds of winter it's now The winds of spring?
@@ModMax69how do you know? Is there something out I’ve missed? If this is true I’m ecstatic
Maelor lives his life knowing that her mother choose him to die…
Why does EVERYONE think it was cheese that kicked his dog? It was blood. JUSTICE FOR CHEESE!!!
You might consider going back and rewatch the scene again 😅
Blood would never kick a dog...
It was cheese
I just rewatched and it was definitely the owner of the dog that kicked him lol
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 yea, at first i thought too that blood did it... i found out it was cheese the second time i watched the episode lol
The thing i don't like is their keeping Damon in that nut castle to long, there's no great violence and nudity, plus it's only 1 story so far. Game of thrones had many stories once the kids grew up.
its a different meaning.
making Helaena choose between the heir and the younger brother, then disregarding her choice (which traumatizes her even more, in the book she can't even be in the same room with Maelor anymore) is a way different thing than having her choose between the twins, a boy and a girl. And she actually chooses the boy to die when they would've maybe fallen for a switch. It connects back to one of the main themes of the series. Rhaenyra is the rightful heir, as decided by Viserys, but "andal tradition" dictates male primogeniture. One generation back, Rheanys' claim was overlooked in the same way…
In the end, Monarchy is just a bad form of government, since it's always a coin toss. Maybe you get a good king, maybe you get a bloodthirsty, mad or lustful egomaniac. Sometimes the king is way past his prime, sometimes it's a literal toddler. And looking back at 300 years of Targaryen rule… some of them, great. Most however…
Excluding Maelor from the show spares us from seeing his fucked up death on screen.
I thought daemon he's favorite character but he never talk about Matt Smith as daemon
he did say Daemon is his favorite but I actually haven’t heard him talk about Matt as Daemon!
B & C yes better in books, but the technical issues of shooting make sense. Young actors and not wanting bunch of cgi, etc.
I prefer the show's version of Blood & Cheese to the book's. In the book, it's a more graphic and horrifying experience with Cheese pulling one of the cruelest acts in the entire story. But what's really the point of all that trauma? Does Cheese have something against the royals? And even if he does... what's the payoff? Doesn't seem like much happens for him in the aftermath except a ambiguous fate. Obviously when it comes to the gore, the show had its hands tied and I think what we got was probably the best choice for live action. But the other changes are really interesting. Instead of asking Halena which son she wants alive, an unnecessary question in the moment that seems to exist only for shock value, they ask which of the identical siblings is the boy, a necessary question that happens to lead into a much more interesting scenario, albeit a less traumatic one. The exchange that follows in the episode is one of the most poignant moments of character development in the series so far. It makes sense that Blood would doubt her words immediately, but the fact that she "spoke true," AND that Cheese, of all people, is maybe the first person to really connect with Halena enough to have that kind of insight into her, is incredibly heartbreaking. Yeah, the more traumatic version is also heartbreaking, but the writers of these shows are known for their character work and this change to the book material shows that they know where, when, and how to flex that muscle.
Need to break his Silence on Winds Of Winter
Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't the source material a story told by like a few people? And every one is telling the same story but slightly different? So if i understand it correctly no one knows what actually happened so if the writers give it their own go .. whats the big deal?
Wait George said Helena’s strangeness and gift for prophecy was not in the books. I thought her seeing events in the future WAS her entire character? Am I mixing Helena up with another character or is George just becoming old?
