Your comments made me realize an interesting contrast generationally between the "90s kids" like myself and today, and you pinpointed it in the music here - the sadness and grief. Many young people today actively avoid sadness, trauma, and grief, whereas our generation embraced it and sang about it defiantly, we doubled down on our trauma - and you hear that in the Cranberries or Nirvana or Pearl Jam and others like that. Interesting, I'd not made that connection before, hmm.

Born in the 80s raised by a single mother with 3 kids in the 90s and we are the sticks and stones generation and like she said in the song we really did give a damn at that time. Looking back we realized what we messed but at the time we didn't have any way to express it cause we all felt like does anyone care. We could surround ourselves with lots of friends and family but still felt completely alone.
I love how you start jamming out to the intro, but as soon as she starts singing you immediately notice the tone is serious and you are quickly sucked in. Love your honest reactions.

@@joeevett9007 No matter the form of drug though, it was just such a seriously sad loss! She had such a beautiful if sad and soulful voice that showed the pain she felt in every song she sang! They were also very political as a group though too as per ‘Zombie’ which was all about the troubles in own homeland of Northern Ireland! I was so sad and shocked the day I heard Dolores had passed away as The Cranberries were an incredible group.

From comments Dolores made on this song, she was feeling the pressures of being an adult and suddenly hugely famous and touring all the time and was missing being at home with her family. However, the line, "Understand what I've become, It wasn't my design, And people everywhere think, Something better than I am" is related to her self loathing due to her (at that time) secret sexual abuse experiences.
So glad to hear that this was an emotion in the song, because I love this song but always felt there was sexual abuse happening from her emotions
That's absolutely right.It's from her actually saying this stuff in an interview and her alluding to what everyone surmised to her 'secretive abuse' she never went there,but it's a drawn conclusion it was sexual. Dolores was always open and honest in a lot in the early years just a teenager out of high school when she first joined the brothers in the band.

"Does anyone care....?" ..she left home to pursue her musical career. Wrote this song on her first tour of the U.S. where the Cranberries were huge from the success of their debut album. She missed her family, her country, her simple life. The lyrics are about her missing the simple times versus what the people/her fans thought she was or should be. Tragic end to her story after struggling with untreated childhood trauma. RiP

Without reading up on it, it simply seems like a lament of her finding the world to be a much different place than her first impression of it, which is her family.
you need to research the history of Ireland, especially from the 1960-1998 to understand what their music is all about. Thanks for doing this, it is a long time ago I listen to their music, she was a genius singer!

Thanks so much, this is my fav Band and probably my fav Song ever! This is not a political Song, she wrote this one when the Band was on Tour with much success and many Fans, but she was missing her family, her home and her childhood, so the Fans care about her, but do they really, like really care? Thus the repeated "Does anyone care?"☺ They are from Ireland by the way.
Also, the Ireland that she, and the band lived through was basically like Oakland during the 80s and 90s, bit with WAYYYYYY more bombs, "cops" and guns.
Cork was generally peaceful here but in Northern Ireland it was crazy. People in Belfast lived through hell.
The republic was peaceful except for marches in Dublin and the burning of the UK embassy. But living with that on the news every night most people had extended family up there in the north.

I think the line "does anyone care" refers to the demands being placed on her and the band, fans wanted to see them, record company wanted them performing for years and years with no break and nobody except their families cared what it was doing to them and their happiness

Im a big fan of The Cranberries since 1994 they did until today and forever. I hear her every single day everyday. Some part of the lyrics picturing her childhood which she had sexual abuse / harassment from some respective family friend (suspected the church pastor). I got it from some news article. She also suffered from mild bipolar due to her depression, being hugely successful, but meanwhile nobody cares about the traumas she holds. And she needs to appear "Being OK" as the Front Lady of the HUGE CRANBERRIES. I LOVE HER until forever. RIP my Queen Dolores. Your forever fan, From Jakarta Indonesia. It's about her missing her family and regrets what she's become which was an alcoholic. She was still an angel though. She died in her bathtub in I think 2018. A beautiful voice, just a tortured soul.
Dolores was diagnosed with several Bipolar Disorder in 2015, but she suffered with it from the time she was a teenager. She was a truly troubled individual, and it eventually took her life. That's why her music was always so haunting, and would often be both happy and sad at the same time.
The song is about Dolores leaving her home in the country to become a singer in a band and even though there were conflicts (in the country and with her decision to leave the family home) she loved her family intensely. It's deeply personal. Joy leaving to be a singer, Sorrow having to leave her parent's family home to do it. Does anyone care is a reference to how it's a personal song which may resonate with someone but its for her first and foremost.

Some of my favorite Cranberries songs are: Wanted, When You're Gone, The Icicle Melts, So Cold in Ireland, Daffodil Lament. There's so much emotion in her voice. It's good music to listen to when I need a good cry.

Abso-fuckin-lutely; check “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam! Pioneers of grudge rock, and one of the most fascinating and gripping songs of the 90’s, possibly beyond. It is 90’s music 101, cannot skip it.
I have seen The Cranberries twice. Once in the nineties in New Zealand and once not long before Delores passed here in London. Both times she had me in tears with that ethereal voice of hers. Magic!!

Saw them around the UK as "The Cranberry Saw Us" , then The Cranberries, from 1991 each year to 1996. Mainly Sheffield, but also Leeds, Hull and other places. The band was really cool and friendly, Dolores was stunning and really funny.
This gives me serous nostalgia vibes. This is one of the songs that remind me of a time when my 10 year old eyes only saw America through a television that barely receives MTV.

I was born earlier than expected (April 1970) in Béal Feirste, just before my parents planned to and did emigrate to America because they did not want me to grow up in a war zone. I went back in the early 1990s to live with and care for my Great Auntie while attending grad school…why don’t you visit around July 12th even now and tell ME it’s low burning in THE SIX COUNTIES 😒 People think that since the Easter agreement in 1998 solved everything…🙄
@@user-lw6pq1gs8p I was born a Irish Catholic 'orangeman' in Derry of Parents that never had a Brit passport but where born british in Ireland. Relatives died in WWII for RAF and others SF political figures 'on the run'. I knew personally life as a wide eyed boy before '69 in N.Ireland and friends of many sides and class. The stories and experiences I had could fill a few books or songs but what really troubled me was the time after the day when milk stopped being delivered to the front door, sometimes had doorkeys left for the milkman. The reasons did not matter. Ireland had a greater spirit that was dimmed after '69, IMHO but regardless of personal traumas or troubles. However, the character of the island, still sings, dance, write and joke about everyday life. Many international stars stem from the relatively unknown little island and may still reference more about the no milk on the Doorways and really never know why that is more relevant in their lives.

It's funny, I can listen to this song & just jam, but other times it reminds me of when I was a teen in the 90's, a child of divorce with parents who decided to go live their own lives without me & the isolation & hurt I felt at that time. Songs like this can cut to the heart of you & bare old wounds that you think have healed.

The writers of this song, and the creators of the video (and the video for Zombie) grew up in a war zone. People of Ireland killing each other over religious beliefs, if you can imagine such a thing. In parts of Ireland, this has been going on for over 100 years, it's the Catholics vs the Protestants. The political climate is also very volatile. So glad I was born and raised in the US.
What you could do for songs like this is look up the Wikipedia article or some other info during the outro after the song is over.

To answer your question about the upbringing of the singer/writer, read a little about "the troubles" in Ireland, as i'm not Irish there's no way I could do it justice trying to explain it, I doubt if anyone could in the limited space of a YT comment. This is a big rabbit hole to fall down and you'll probably learn some American history that you probably weren't taught while you're at it.

The English have oppressed the Irish Catholic community since time immemorial. There’s a great book about this by Leon Uris called Trinity. South Ireland, mostly Protestant , conceded , whereas Northern Irish Catholics have not. This goes back back to when Henry the Eighth broke with the Roman church and declared himself head of the Church of England so he could divorce his wife to marry another. Lots of info on YT!
I think you might need to read Trinity again. The Southern part of Ireland became an independent republic afrter a war of independence and has a mainly Roman Catholic population (not that the religion is all that important because freedom of worship is constitutionally guaranteed). Six counties in the Northeastern corner of the island were retained as part of the UK and are known as Northern Ireland.

What a great time it was to be a teenager listening to moody 90s grunge like this Irish emo. Lol but seriously, the Cranberries, great group. I love the stories they tell about their country and the impact it had on them. Rage Against the Machine is another great political “grunge” group I loved form the 90s. Like “Killing In the Name of”. I love watching your first impression and interpretation from your eyes. It reminds me when I first listened to this stuff and all the memories flooding back of friends listening with me. Yay! Music is awesome. I think you should dive into some female angst songs by female writers/ musicians with the roe v wade bs coming up. You are just scratching the surface with Dolores.
