I was always touched by the line "My father ... he liked me." It says so much by underplaying it in a way. Her father, no doubt, loved her very much, but to say "he liked me" says something else, that he enjoyed her company, appreciated her personality, thought she was cool. Many parents can love their kids without feeling any of those things.
This is, and has always been my favorite Cranberries song. With Linger being a close 2nd. The story behind this song is that Delores was feeling homesick and realizing how tough touring America can be. Living in hotels, away from your family, the people you’ve known and the sacrifices you’ve had to make for the price of fame and playing music. Rest in Peace, Delores O’Riordan.
Dolores wrote this song on their first US tour. She was missing home very badly. While she was extroverted after a while, she was extremely shy initially. In the pubs of Ireland they couldn't get her to face the crowd. That voice carried her around the world. Now she rests eternally beside her father, back in the place she was missing so much when she wrote this.
That’s right about her being so shy. Saw then in the White horse in Dublin before they were signed to a label. A small gig in an upstairs room with only about 30 people - could have been less even. She was so shy & lacking in confidence but her voice carried through the usual pub clamour & chatter, sweet, soulful & unpretentious. The fact that she always sang in her own Limerick accent showed a latent confidence in her own unique talent - unlike so many others who Americanised their accents to sell internationally. Rest in peace Lolo
This song hit the charts in 1994. It shows Dolores craving the simple life as a child after achieving success. Her parents weren't happy with her choice to pursue a career as a rock star. Unbelievable vocals with harmonies that are so very entertaining especially with the Irish accents that draw your full attention. Absolutely beautiful. Loved your reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
As someone from Ireland who was fucked on heroin for over 10yrs i can tell you SHE KNOWS WHAT SHES talking about. Im clean since 2012 and watching her sing about this touches my soul. DONT DO IT🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪💪💪💪
Another Irish band with 3 sisters and their brother is the Corrs. They are all beautiful and the lead singer has a great voice. Breathless is their most iconic song
I had the biggest crush on the singer when I was in high school. I was a metal head and couldn't admit to my friends that I liked the Cranberries, although looking back, I suspect they secretly liked them too. She was a beautiful lady with an astounding voice that still gives me goosebumps to this day. R.I.P. Dolores O'Riordan.
So glad you did another Cranberries song. Not a week goes by when I don't miss Dolores. If I may, I'd like to take this opportunity to recommend another amazing female voice from the 90s, Harriet Wheeler, the lead singer of The Sundays. Though not Irish, her voice is as pure as they come. "Summertime", "Here's Where the Story Ends", and "Goodbye" are among their very best. I hope they will grace a future Female Friday.
I always think of what she had went through in her life to take her own . Was it leaving her people behind ? Was it the family that died before she was famous and she wasn't able to share her wealth with . That is a big one . Not being able to help those who have passed . Or maybe drugs ...
One of the most unique voices of our generation. She was truly a gift to us. I absolutely loved this group for so many reasons. Still miss her today. ❤️
My mom died on a Monday when I was at work. On my way home I heard this song on the radio and I had to pull over because I was crying so hard. It's heartbreaking and beautiful.
I’ve been hoping you’d react to this. A close friend lost his wife to cancer over 20 years ago. I remember driving to see him and spend time with him. I played this song on repeat the entire drive. It still makes me think of that time. Just a beautiful song. Thanks for the react.
Hello from Dublin, lreland ,love your reactions,Dolores had a very unique voice. I wish she would have stayed with us longer. God bless you Dolores. Lots of love .❤️😘☘️RIP.
Always so wonderful. Dolores, we miss you. Gone too soon. As always, though, I'm still waiting for "Promises". Trust me, please. And I love how Amber is now throwing the sophisticated music terminology around like it's no big deal. So cool.
Check out their "Promises", "Animal Instinc", "Salvation", "Analyze", "Stars", "Just my imagination"...... they had lots of hits and even the non hits are beautiful songs.
You know that this band can rock but they kept this intentionally spare and low key to showcase Dolores' vocals here. Wonderful performance all around. Perfect.
Love that you love the cranberries guys, makes me so proud to be Irish when your playing them from the other side of the world. R.I.P Delores O Riordain , you were special.
💕 The Cranberries, all of their songs. So many favorites. Dolores O'Riordan wrote most if not all of the songs. Would like for you to react to "Salvation", "Ridiculous Thoughts" & "I Still Do". Great reaction😁👍
One of the best Cranberries songs imo. Can't really go wrong with The Cranberries. I highly recommend listening to Animal Instinct, Just My Imagination, Salvation and You And Me
Beautiful song by a beautiful soul. The only other artist who can have the same affect on me when I hear her voice is Annie Lennox. Listen to Why by Lennox
So glad you keep listening to more of the Cranberries! They're my absolute favorite, and I love seeing the genuine appreciation you guys have for them. If you guys want to see more of their heavier stuff, I recommend Salvation! It's one of my favorites. :))
So cool that y’all like the Cranberries and Delores so much. I am from an Irish family and the Cranberries are almost royalty in my house. My mom was 8 when she came to America with my grandparents and this is one of her favorite songs. Love yalls videos. ❤
This is the first song on the album "No Need to Argue", which came out the fall of 7th grade for me. This song was my first introduction to "The Cranberries". Deloris O'Riordan died 2 days before my birthday. Hard to believe this January will be 5 years since she died. Makes me rather sad when I think about it, and I'm not one that normally is affected by the death of famous people.
The cranberries were my high school and college years and I was devastated to hear of Delores' death. I still get emotional when I hear this song. They were part of my high school and college family.
There is a song by The Cranberries that is way too short but, it is so great and so sad at the same time. It's called "Empty" you might not be able to cover it but, a must listen!!!
5:23 love how this video is edited. In this line she’s singing just the background section. Fits the ethereal nostalgia of the tune. Kind of obsessed with the melody and that voice.
I named one of my characters after her because she will always be a kickass rockstar to me and her music always got me through rough points in my life growing up. I can only hope that she’s in a better place now. Rip Dolores.
This song always meant a lot to me, too. The Cranberries came along when our kids were teens, but they actually were not too embarrassed to have us around. We saw them with our kids and a few of their friends at an outdoor venue in a light drizzling rain. Ode to My Family feels like my family growing up, but I hope like our family that was growing up then, too. One thing about seeing them live - Dolores was tiny. It was astounding to hear this big voice come out of this little woman. She blows me away, plus what a tight band the Cranberries were.
I love how so often people speak of Dolores in the present tense. It says a lot about how she still can make us feel with her and her band mates artistry.
It's been awhile since you checked out another Irish lass Sinead O'Connor... What about her song 'Troy' or '3 Babies' or 'You Made Me The Thief of Your Heart'
This is one of the best tracks from The Cranberries….. it’s a beautiful track and what a gorgeous voice she has just made even more so with the amazing songs she writes with the rest of the bands backing so perfectly layered …… wow 🎼🎷🎵🎶💔🥃🥃🐾🐾🏴🏴🙏🏼🙏🏼. RIP Dolores taken too soon NMHRK NMHRK NMHRK

THIS.

Right, such a powerful thing to say your father and mother liked you. I'm crying, just wow
Exactly!
You know it's about her dad sexually abusing her right? The next line is "Did anyone care?"
She sings with her natural accent. She’s an Irish treasure.

You got a problem with When You're Gone, bro?!?!

groovelife415.that last sentance you wrote got me emotional!
Why are you cutting onions?
This song makes me cry every time. 😢 My childhood wasn’t so great but I definitely miss my parents.
Me too!
Sometimes, no matter how bad we think we have it, someone somewhere out there, has it much worse than us.
🙂
Im a grown man and i atleast get one tear that comes out sad song to me
Reminds me of my grandpa he was about 80 percent irish and the video saddens me
Hold fast, I feel u
This song is just so full of yearning, warmth, melancholy, wit. Sung by the voice of an angel. No one could do it like Dolores O'Riordan.
One of the best Cranberries songs.
I always get choked up when i hear it . Its beautiful and Dolores was a gem , she sang with her accent unapologetically.
Solid song, Can't wait till they discover The Sundays

There is a young girl on UA-cam called Janet Devlin, she has the same keen to her voice as Delores, lovely singer, with a Donegal lilt!
Met her in Calgary working in a store. She was sweet.
Rest In Peace Delores!!! Will be missed
Finally!! Someone is finally reacting to Ode To My Family which I absolutely LOVE!! Thank you for this!
She was special. R.I.P
Hearing this song now makes me tear up. May she rest in peace. Her solo albums were beautiful and really underrated too.
Jay & Amber, you'll love her "Salvation"!!

Forgiven not forgotten and Runaway are great songs too.
And they did a great cover of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac!

When she sings that phrase "I miss you" you feel her pain so deeply. Amazing artist.

@@stevenkmiller Thanks Steve! Love your music! ;)
Dolores’s background vocals and harmonies make this song. Just beautiful. Great reaction guys.
In my opinion their best song is "No Need To Argue". Such a beautiful yet sad song.
I love that song too. It is such an underappreciated gem from this band.
Masterpiece of a song.
What you're noticing is her unmistakable Irish (Gaelic) accent coming through in her every word.
I always think of what she had went through in her life to take her own . Was it leaving her people behind ? Was it the family that died before she was famous and she wasn't able to share her wealth with . That is a big one . Not being able to help those who have passed . Or maybe drugs ...
Erin go bragh 🇮🇪
This song always makes me cry thinking of my Dad. RIP da. Love your parents while you can - they won't be there forever.
That was the first Cranberries song I ever heard - I fell in love instantly.
Goosebumps EVERYTIME i hear this song!!! Thank you!
The sweetest song ever...
Great band and wonderful vocalist. Dolores was so talented. This is a great song.
One of the many things I like about her is that she makes no attempt to mask her wonderful accent as so many performers do.
I think the word you're trying to think of to describe her voice is lilting. It's so beautiful. RIP Dolores
This song & "Dreams" are my go to cranberries songs 😊
Delores o’riordens Irish accent coming through her singing voice always made her stand out for me
One of the most unique voices of our generation. She was truly a gift to us. I absolutely loved this group for so many reasons. Still miss her today. ❤️
There will never be another band or voice like this!!
Jeezus, this brings me back to 1995, my first year in college... this song was all over radio and MTV back then.
Yes she did have such a unique voice.
Doloris keening is so balanced by her tender melodic range. This song more than any other from the cranberries makes her passing so sad.
RIP Dolores. Voice of an angel.
Great song good pick Amber
