I used to listen to Jimmy Shand and his dance band when I was growing up in County Antrim, N Ireland way back in the distant past I’m 81 years of age and I remember trying to get our wireless set with wet batteries to the right station to hear Jimmy. I practised the Barn Dance so that when I was taken to local dances in the Orange Halls at the time I could at least do the Barn Dance. Great memories of times past. Thank you for this wonderful reminder👏

My dad loved this song I would play this music for him when I was with him. He told me he wants this song played at his funeral & we did that on the 13th October. Love you Dad 🙏😢

My dad could play this on his button accordion Not any where near as good but pretty close. He's gone now but when I heard this I thought of him sitting in his chair playing. .

Things like this remind me of how brilliant it is to be Scottish. Any young farmers dance or wedding and the jimmy shand and such comes on, everybody gets a partner and belts to the dancefloor

As a child growing up on a remote Scottish island I would hear Jimmy Shand on the radio. I built an image of him as some flamboyant band leader, a bit like Andy Stewart. It was only recently that I discovered he was an extremely serious musician who looked like an accountant, which only endeared me to him more. Only the genuine live on...

Jimmy was once staying in a guest house. He asked the landlady for some honey for his bread. She brought him a tiny pot of honey. Jimmy's comment was "Ah Mrs, I see that you keep a bee!"

This is not my kind of music (I am a performer of jazz and a house DJ), but Jimmy Shand has my greatest respect. He played for about 60 years, and, his music brought pleasure to a lot of people. It sounds bright and cheerful, and is very evocative. Everything is flawlessly executed. Look at him in this video. Almost motionless and detached, yet this music is pouring out. Five stars out of five.
Will Justin Bieber, or Britney Spears perform for 60 years?

Saw him on stage in Australia with the Alexander Brothers - still motionless but a great pleasure to see this fine musician in real life.

True for shand and many other stalwarts of the showband era they perform right up until they just cant, same can be said for Johnny Carroll who recently celebrated 60 years performing after only starting with a local roscommon band at age 13

I can always remember my mother doris lightfoot,( my best friend in the whole wide world) telling me when she took me to a dance in dumfrieshire, jimmy shand was playing there with his band, and me being the youngest in the hall that night gave my mam a 10 shilling note, at the ripe old age of one year old.

Brilliant, one of our true greats. I wouldn't have thought it was my kind of music either but Jimmy transcends genres with his ability to let the music flow out of him through a cumbersome instrument called an accordian. We all have gifts but to watch him display his is a wonderful experience. I might just learn this tune!
