EXPLANATION: Superman the the ultimate catalyst. So he arrives on Earth like he always does and that affects the present. But to fix the present, you need to go into the past. By moving the Lantern and getting rid of Green Lantern (Alan Scott), the world never had the Justice Society of America in WW2 and never got the early exposure to heroes and super powered being that they desperately needed. Of course, fixing the past and present also fixed the future, which allows for the creation of Saturn Girl and the Legion of Superheroes. All these events fix the situation of Johnny Thunder and Saturn Girl in the present (which both are currently in). Now that Manhattan fixed time, they are currently part of the main DC continuity and have history with Superman, allowing him to help them. Due to the Justice League of Society, people aren't afraid of superheroes and they are inspired by them. This causes the Kents to allows Clark to embrace who he is. Since they allow Clark to be a hero at such a young age, he prevents their car crash (just like the Pre New 52), becomes Superboy, meets the Legion of Superheroes, and etc. *I'll write more if this comment gets a lot of likes :)
I think that dr Manhattan couldn’t see the outcome of the child, just like he couldn’t see the outcome of his encounter with Superman. So he decided that this kid must be worthy of his power since Superman is someone who is worthy too.
Ughhhh how much i wish alot of these comic books were made into real movies. I would prefer them to be animated movies because live action movies dont do so well but it would be amazing
It's not impossible for a live action comic-book film to be good, just the people who turn them in to films need to get this "it needs to be more realistic, people won't understand it" mentality out of their heads. The Watchmen live action film is one of the best, if not the best, comic-book to live action adaptation I've seen and they pretty much copied the comic word for word, and the small changes they did make, in my opinion, made it possibly even better than the comic.
@@Gohka I dont think there's something inherently wrong with adaptations, but when you go so far from the source material, what made it originally "good" kinda waters it down for new people and alienates the core audience imo
the death of supermans parents is easy to explain. theres a new earth superman and a prime earth superman and somewhere during dc rebirth dc decided they were both actually just the same character lol (flashpoint side effect) so they share confusing origin stories
Thanks a lot for this. I'm not a seasoned comic-book reader, (I do follow superhero shows etc. though) but I've been wanting to read this. Turns out I've never had the time. So finally decided to just listen to the story from you lot. Left the video on while painting the room :) Peace!
This is my first time reading a whole book while watching this video and I have to say leaving a lot of things out while narrating the story has been a great incentive to actually read the comics yourself.
1:58:33 I love the cameos from two Charlton heroes that being blue beetle (Ted kord) and the question as the Charlton heroes were the inspiration for the watchmen characters as question is rorschach and blue beetle is the second night owl, hell night owls ship is just the bug without the legs and clear glass windows
I got sentimental when the Legion of Superheroes and JLA showed up to help. Supes art style reminds of of Christopher Reeves so it added to the nostalgia
Just wanna say, your videos are great backround noise for when I play video games. Music is boring after a while, and your videos are basically a story that never needs pictures. Love it! (Mostly Minecraft, and other than Minecraft it is really just single and multiplayer RPGs of many types)
Doomsday Clock has its flaws, but it definitely presents a lot of interesting concepts, fantastic character studies, and a lot of fun! I love the Marionette and Mime, they are if Joker and Harley had a healthy relationship. And the 2nd Rorschach being the psychologists son was such an awesome character to dive into, and a perfect fit. Art and colorwork is so freaking good too. This run is underrated! 🔥🔥🔥
Has anyone else found it hard to imagine that Rorschach's journal *actually* exposed Ozymanduis's plot? Basically, random guy at a disrespected tabloid rag flips through some unhinged conspiracy theorists ramblings. He sees: "Meeting with dry bird left bad taste in mouth." & thinks "My god! Everything we know is a lie!" 😆😂🤣
Love this video, man! And the channel! Also: I can’t believe you skipped over the “Secret Crisis” part 😂 My man, that literally looks like it’ll be the next DC/Marvel crossover, announced as a throwaway line in DC’s best crossover/reboot story ever written.
Yeah you kind of get that vibe where he put his powers into a a young boy to be raised by a loving family. He sees that Superman will always save the DC universe no matter what universe it is, so he created his own Superman to save his universe.
@@jdjenk04 so uhh there’s idiots in the comments saying Superman won and dr Manhattan won but I think this wasn’t a battle just a message what do you guys think?
During issue ten, there are those scenes where Manhattan is jumping through time, first with Coleman about his movie roles. Then with Superman and seeing the different versions of his origin story through different timelines. Then by moving Alan Scott's arm away from the lantern. I guess I don't completely understand how Dr Manhattan isn't able to time travel and still able to do those things. I read this story and was under the impression that he was time jumping.... guess I'm a bit confused with that.
Lucas Denault I was going to comment on this, then I read yours, and you’re right. Dr. Manhattan CLEARLY HAS the ability to travel through time. I love this channel and Rob’s insight, but in my opinion, he’s incorrect I’m saying that Dr. Manhattan does NOT have the ability to travel through time. He clearly does. This story plays out to PROVE that he does. He messes with the timeline once, changes his mind, messes with it and fixes it later on, and if he didn’t have the insight yet, he CLEARLY couldn’t have done this previously. PLUS, he messes with it twice, meaning that he previously chose one set of actions, then YEARS later saw the consequences, changed his mind, then traveled back to fix it. He can ABSOLUTELY travel through time, or else he couldn’t have done two different courses of “meddling” here. Some could say: “well, he meddled at the time, and then he saw the future that COULD be, and decided to meddle in a different way.” But that would negate a lot of what happened in this run of the comic series. That explanation would basically imply that “it was all a dream”. But if he thought about meddling, rather than ACTUALLY meddling, then he wouldn’t have had a clear vision of the future results anyway. Plus, saying “it was all a dream” is just lame and kind of ruins the story. It wasn’t a dream. He CLEARLY went back in time, meddled, changed A LOT, waited until the results screwed everything up, talked to Superman, was inspired, then went back in time again to fix it all. There’s really no other way to see it than that. Sorry Rob, but you’re wrong on the point that he can’t or doesn’t time travel. He clearly can and did.
@@frankguinan9927 I think John’s made it pretty obvious that he can time travel. He’s able to do it, otherwise why would all those photos that Luthor collected keeping appearing in different points in time? Plus Carver Coleman was the first person Dr Manhattan met/saw when he arrived in the DC universe. This would have been a long time after Alan Scott reached for the Lantern on the train, and became the Green Lantern. So he would’ve had to have gone back in time to move the Lantern, showing that he can time travel. If he was just perceiving then he wouldn’t be able to physically interact with the Lantern in the past. This is proved further by the fact after the events of Doomsday Clock, he moves the Lantern back after having moved it once before. If people ask or say ‘well why didn’t he do that in the Watchmen comics’, then just remind them that it was written by Alan Moore. Like Geoff John’s, Scott Snyder, Frank Miller and (to a degree) Grant Morrison, Moore puts things in that are relevant to the world building, story or character. When you read Watchmen, what would the relevance of Dr Manhattan being able to time travel do other than take away from its realism, and also because it wouldn’t have suited the story and stakes if Manhattan just went back and did everything. The way he was written was to be pretty omnipotent, and as it was never stated he could time travel, there’s no reason why Geoff John’s says he can’t.
He can't time travel. He arrived before the superhero DC universe began. He can see the way things will be. So he waits and makes changes to see how the changes effects what he sees.
Definitely good writing and a lot to unpack. Thanks for going over this lengthy but amazing comic that I am late on. I searched up DR M and saw your vid.
That's not part of the calculation. When you're on an uncontrollable course set to destroy 1 or 5, you won't have the luxury to ask if that 1 is important. It boils down to mathematical value. That's the point of that theory.

In 'Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan' doesn't he go back and forth along his own timeline and change past events? I feel like that was the entire reason for his four issue comic line there... Correcting his mistake that caused all the additional timelines to come into existence.

*I'll write more if this comment gets a lot of likes :)
KJ Iyere watch the new movie and then explain what happens next kuz I’m lost for words went out ina bang
Thanks for the explanation. I'm glad the Justice Society is apart of the main continuity again.
Crazy
@Flying Cupcake Wouldn't call myself a nerd, but thank you! People like you are why I do this!
I think that dr Manhattan couldn’t see the outcome of the child, just like he couldn’t see the outcome of his encounter with Superman. So he decided that this kid must be worthy of his power since Superman is someone who is worthy too.
Lol, Rob pretending he's broke.
You pay his bills?
not broke probably just has a credit card or something
This needs to be an animated mini series!
I, personally, enjoy these long, 3 hour, videos you make. Keep it up my guy
Ughhhh how much i wish alot of these comic books were made into real movies. I would prefer them to be animated movies because live action movies dont do so well but it would be amazing
1000% agree
#RestoreTheSnyderVerse
... and DC really needs them. Our beloved franchise doth suffer
We need a version of this where there's a clock timer in the corner to the end of the doomsday clock, with each issue being a different "hour".
I have been waiting for this longer than Rob's channel has been up 😭😭😭
the death of supermans parents is easy to explain. theres a new earth superman and a prime earth superman and somewhere during dc rebirth dc decided they were both actually just the same character lol (flashpoint side effect) so they share confusing origin stories
I miss the good ol' "your momma wears combat boots" days
@ 1:06:30 “Superman is the only person to take up residency in a city and make it safer because Superman is so hawt...I mean powerful”
Was it cool collaborating with your older videos like this? I love it! Man, lemme tell ya something!!!
I love how Rob avoids sayin butterfly effect the whole video lol
Thank you Rob, for this amazing video. Your clarification and analysis make everything better.
Thanks a lot for this.
I'm not a seasoned comic-book reader, (I do follow superhero shows etc. though) but I've been wanting to read this.
Turns out I've never had the time. So finally decided to just listen to the story from you lot. Left the video on while painting the room :)
Peace!
I'm excited to binge this weekend lol good stuff!
I got sentimental when the Legion of Superheroes and JLA showed up to help. Supes art style reminds of of Christopher Reeves so it added to the nostalgia
Man let me tell you sumthin!!! The highlight of any story on Comics Explained.
Dr Manhattan single handly makes the multiverse more interesting. Nice job.
1:17:55 "Shazam is coming back." Uh, Shazam was in New 52. Coming back from where?
He was missing at the start of rebirth
@@malamatinos2130 He was in the first issue of Rebirth, the one where Pandora was killed.
I can’t believe how good this channel has become. Excellent.
Loved the journey we all went on during this series, every bit.
This comic run was a true masterpiece.
The fact that there’s a Jericho reference made my day. Have you seen the season 3 graphic novel?
Hearing Brothers in Arms in the background..... +10 my friend! Nice touch. 👏🏼👍🏼
Has anyone else found it hard to imagine that Rorschach's journal *actually* exposed Ozymanduis's plot? Basically, random guy at a disrespected tabloid rag flips through some unhinged conspiracy theorists ramblings. He sees:
"Meeting with dry bird left bad taste in mouth."
& thinks "My god! Everything we know is a lie!"
😆😂🤣
Love this video, man! And the channel! Also:
I can’t believe you skipped over the “Secret Crisis” part 😂
My man, that literally looks like it’ll be the next DC/Marvel crossover, announced as a throwaway line in DC’s best crossover/reboot story ever written.
Geoff Johns is transitioning more towards the DCEU side of DC Comics and I cannot be more angry. Doomsday clock is perfection
This ain’t it chief
Thanks for putting the whole story into a single video.
i think Dr.Mnahattan did that because he wants to make a "superman" in watchmen universe.
this is kinda sad and coll at the same time.
When Mime pull out the invisible biscuit I kinda laughed at Holy Jesus lol...
I don’t even like Watchmen but I still love this video mostly because Rob is so happy
OMFG WOW I'M SPEECHLESS RN LOVE IT ROB AMAZING JOB ROB CORPS VOICE 💯💯🔥🔥🔥
I'm probably not the first one saying this, but maybe Dr. Manhattan is trying to create a Superman for his universe.
He just did!
@@Frankely2tog yeah lol it wasn’t even a battle? Like they didn’t throw a punch at eachother if I remember correctly lol
Old school 2+ hour long video. Love it.
We need this as an animated series
“Y’all ever read a story so good you wanna punch a whole in the wall?” LOOL
@@ishaaqmartin3564 yes but in order to move the lantern back he had to time travel.
@@mattcalloway6254 no all he did was tell himself in his own mind move the latern back because he can see time all at once
Definitely good writing and a lot to unpack. Thanks for going over this lengthy but amazing comic that I am late on. I searched up DR M and saw your vid.
The first 10 mins of this didn’t age well with Russia invading Poland… they were so close to predicting the future
Actually it pointed out at Ukraine too.
yooooo! did you have "brothers in arms" by dire straits playing in the background at around 28min? SOOOO great! great taste! ❤️
crazy, I just had a feeling to come back to this channel, and ofc the latest doomsday finally comes out just days before. What a coincidence.
Damn man this has to be the longest video I've stuck around to watch in one go. Excellent work my man, keep it up!
Been waiting for this forever. Buckle up ladies and gents
Thanks for putting this together.
Loved the whole thing! When I herd the about the TV series they connected it with the comic was cool?! I have to watch the TV series now!!!
That moment when Dr. Manhattan realized that what his universe needed to survive was hope. And Superman was the answer.
52:15 .. depends who that one guy is. Some people are "1 in a million".
That's not part of the calculation. When you're on an uncontrollable course set to destroy 1 or 5, you won't have the luxury to ask if that 1 is important. It boils down to mathematical value. That's the point of that theory.
Thanks Rob for all of your material! I really enjoy listening/watching your videos while i work (don't tell my boss 🤐)
This is genius level writing.
I love the background music man keep up the good work man
Yoo, now that the year’s ending, what were some of y’all’s favorite stories and events? I really loved Doomsday Clock, House of X, Absolute Carnage, War of Realms, Justice League: 6th Dimension, DCeased, omfg man this year 🤯
The Shock Rock I like all these options but war of the realms
27:00 NO WAY you used Brothers in Arms as background music… You absolute legend
OMG just read the entire Doomsday clock, its EPIC.
I Love Comics Explained I binge watch\listen to his comics explained at work I'm an 80s person so comics were the best ever back then people would have big boxes with comic books in the comic book holders lol. Thank you for the memories.
In 'Before Watchmen: Doctor Manhattan' doesn't he go back and forth along his own timeline and change past events? I feel like that was the entire reason for his four issue comic line there... Correcting his mistake that caused all the additional timelines to come into existence.
He can time travel. He’s able to do it otherwise why would all those photos that Luthor collected keeping appearing in different points in time?

This video is an amazing education in the history of comic books and their publications.
