I love this watch, i wear mine all the time because i know its going to be grab and go without having to worry about the time being exactly correct. The lume and specifically the lume on the 12 is so bright and distinct and contrasts beautifully with the white background.
The 24hr sub dial is useless they should have put a day complication which is more useful. Colorway is gorgeous but minute hand is too short. Great review.
I want to mention that about 10 or so years ago I purchased a solar seiko field watch. About 5 years later the capacitor went. I was able to replace it fairly easily, and the replacement off amazon was around 20 or 25 at that time. I know my experience is anecdotal at best, but after that occurred I kinda went back to preferring quartz over solar. At least with quartz the batteries are cheap and easy to install, and if it makes me happy I can also change the caseback gasket for very little……I know I shouldn’t write off all solar from one bad experience, but I do have some lingering hesitation
I love my Kamasu so…. I just wish it was a hair smaller. I have a 7in wrist so I can probably pull it off. This is a strong contender for my next watch for sure. Thanks as always for the detailed review! 🐼🐟
You read my mind. I don't think I can count the number of quartz and mechaquartz watches that have been good-looking and affordable but also easily cast aside the minute I saw the 24 hour subdial.
I'm generally not very interested in most chronos due to bulky pushers but the pushers aren't too big on this and the dial design works. 22mm lug bracelets with little to no taper seem more unrefined to me these days even though i have several watches bracelets like this. Thanks for the review. Don't see too many Orient reviews these days.
The battery in my solar charged Citizen Skyhawk vintage 2002 lasted 22 years. This solar Orient is my next watch. With a black leather band against the white dial, it will be stunning. Orient makes terrific watches. I have two Kamasu's (and yes, I do have a Rolex).
Ive bought this along with bambi japan leather croco pattern strap black. Been wearing it everyday as a daily beater. It complements the panda dial more than the steel bracelet. Loving it ever since. The solar with the sporty diver bezel is icing on the cake!
Being a big Kamasu fan (I have a blue one and a scarlet one), I find this to be an interesting idea. I like the Panda version, but I would have left out the date.
A very nice watch Shane. Definitely something to consider for anyone looking for a panda chrono with good water resistance. Not for me as I have a JDM Orient panda, plus a mecaquartz and a Pulsar Solar Chrono so don't have room for another. Excellent review as always !
I'm really into Solar watches even though I have Rolex and Zenith mechanical pieces in my collection. What'd be your recommendations for sub 41mm time pieces for consideration? Thanks
Some are. What I meant was this one specifically. As it is now the subdials seem a little on the smaller side, so if they shrank it and kept everything in proportion I think it would be hard to read.
Its actually very cool if you want to time two events. Great option if you need a quartz diver but also need a chrono. I would probably get this as a gift for someone who wants a nice watch but doesnt want quartz
Seiko Solar Sumo Chrono Prospex SSC021P1 (black) or SSC785 (PADI/Pepsi) leapt right to mind. I like their looks better as Orient styling isn't for me. In this case the 12 + busy logo+wordmark+Chronograph+20bar overloads the top of the face) The Seiko may be the same movement & may have screw down pushers. Good review though!
Just for comparison’s sake, you may wish to look at the Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver, the original do it all tool watch. I think it’s gorgeous, and it manages to fit both a tachymetre scale and a dive timing bezel all into one watch. I think the idea was that it was for the adventurer who might well fly a plane and dive underwater all in one exciting day.
I found it at 220 euros in Europe (im romanian). 1st i wanted an Atlantic Seasport ( 450 euros) but only the hands were superluminova. Also the depth of the watch was a little too much. I plan to buy a white strap till it arrive.
Just purchased this watch, and I absolutely love it!! I currently have it on a mesh bracelet, but I have a few other rally bands that look fantastic. I did not like the bracelet that came with the watch.
I get it. If you want a solar Chronograph with legit WR, where else you gonna go? It’s not an unreasonable thing to exist. I’m still not sold on the notion that one needs a timing bezel AND a chrono feature but I sort of get your point. I would be more interested in a water capable solar chrono with neither a twisty bezel nor a tacky meter doohickey.. That silly date window needs to go!
Rotating bezels are great for quick reminders and adult fidget spinning. I use them all the time when I cook stuff and/or need to remember to go pick up the laundry. The chrono I could take or leave.
I like the Mako (but don't own one yet) and this is a nice addition. I looks quite harmonious and I really like the Orient logo and the text below it, usually the least text the better, but here it just looks nice. But it is too big for me in any case. Thanks for the interesting observations and the beautiful presentation of the watch. Side note: I noticed you have the same tactile turn bolt action pen like me, that is a really nice piece, I use it every time I can.
It's a great pen. Tactile Turn was at the Intersect Meetup hosted by Jack Mason & Nodus, so got to meet them there and bought one. I should probably send them a link to one of these videos, maybe they will send me some to put in.
Price is down to $195 on Amazon today, still think this is the better watch than the Citizen Promaster Eco drive..? The Orient looks so much better and not many people are sporting it, so this may be a contender Great video by the way!
That would be the Ceramic Zodiac Seawolf. ua-cam.com/video/4Iajr8-5cdc/v-deo.html A bit pricey for what it is, but I think Marc from Long Island watch was clearing out his inventory recently.
I'll forgive it's an analog chrono just because it's solar...😋Still, i thing you can find better and most possibly cheaper choices at Citizen. Thanks for the review Shane, be well mate.
Good, comprehensive review Shane. Seiko do a solar chrono version of the Shogun. It's a bit chunky too. But I can't stand 24hr dials on chronos that do nothing, so it's moot. Big fan of the Tsao Baltimore...
Great review as usual. But a black and white diver-chrono bigger than the Kamasu? I'd call it the Orca. :) As for solar chronos (though not diver-chronos), the Seiko Speedtimer is a main competitor here, I think. It comes in two different sizes and you can get the JDM version for not much more than this Oriwnt if you are OK with foregoing a warranty.
Hard to say as it hasn't been out long enough, and orient doesn't make many solar. However I would guess it's going to be pretty similar to Seiko / Citizen solar. At which point you should get 10 to 20 years before any issues. And those you can swap out the battery yourself, but it is a little complicated. Plenty of people do it though. That said I've heard of some solar watches going longer .. It's just the luck of the draw. Like I have a Pulsar (Seiko owned) one that's 25 years old and still going. Battery life isn't as good, but still good enough.
@@RelativeTime thx for reply! So these tick that long?? I thought battery lasts like year or two but wow... Ok so battery life no problem and i might buy one now. Have only automatic orients so this is new to me.
@@dinoXAs2 Oh yeah. The whole idea is that you never should have to mess with it. Or the watch will be so scratched up, you will want a brand new one anyways if you start having power issues. So as far as I'm concerned solar is the way to go with a quartz watch. Just wear it out in the sun for a bit, and should be good. Fully charged it should go for about 6 months before needing more sun, and if it happens to run completely out. Just place it in the window to charge up.
No. It does have a low battery indicator with the seconds hand jumping 2 ticks when there is about a week's worth. According to the manual, it doesn't take much to fully charge it.

I can not figure how a VK 67 with a 12 hour totalizer can possibly be THAT much more over a VK 63 with the moron dial! 💯
Testify, brother!
I honestly think this needed a black chapter ring like the mako USA. It would visually trim up the size making the dial seem smaller.
I forgot this existed… was one of my top choices but eventually settled for a Seiko SSB425.
Very nice. I wonder how it compares to the Neo 70 from Orient?

It is.

It seems good but for that money should we really have to put a $10 Ali milled clasp on it? It looked great on your sailcloth.
