As I get older and my eyesight gets worse, I tilt towards larger cases, especially with complications on the face. Unlike many who claim a given watch is a cheaper alternative to a more expensive counterpart, this Orient really is a better alternative to the Seiko in my opinion. I own both Seiko and Orient, and I will take Orient finishing and quality control over any Seiko 5.
I feel the same. It could be independent gmt, chrono hours counter, power reserve or even 2 subdials instead of 3. Just not this useless am/pm indicator.
Can anybody explain me purpose of 24h dial on quartz? I prefer quartz but I didn't want to buy few watches that I like because of useless 24h dial. Including this one.
But can't you sort of use it as a chrono hrs counter if you set it at 0 right before you start the chrono timer? Edit: or is it married to the larger hour hand. I don't own a chrono so I'm not quite sure if the 24 sub dial is locked together with the hour hand or if you set it independently from the hour hand. My query depends on it being the latter
The Orient has more lume, a signed crown and better finishing on the sub dial circular edges rather than the Seiko punch holes. I was offered a deal on the Seiko, which I'm considering as I thought it was better sized for me, but now I've seen them side by side here... Thanks Marc, most useful.
This is my 1st Orient, and the watch is beautiful. Other than the date wheel being recessed so far that it makes it hard to read I find it a very good looking watch. I put a white strap with black edges and a black buckle on it and it looks GREAT! Especially for the money. 👍😁👍
Both Orient and Seiko are amazing value (well Seiko used to be at least) but only Orient makes you feel guilty for buying the watch because it makes you feel like you ripped them off.
It's a good looking watch, solid piece at a great price. LI almost placed an order for it. However, that 24 hour dial is just pointless to me. I'm not in the submarine service, I can easily tell if it's basically day or night without my watch. I'm sure there are those who can put this to use, but it's not me. In fact I dropped off a watch return today because it had a 24 hour dial that I didn't noticed while shopping (my bad). Oh, and the huge font for the 12 is unappealing as well. Great review as always, though.
I used some cashback and got the Panda for a steal. I put it on a black and while rally strap and I can't stop staring at and admiring it's classic look. I also like the timing bezel, I actually use for my job.
I own a vaguely-similar Seiko: Having the dive-style bezel is actually quite useful -- for timing something at lower precision whilst you're timing with the chrono ... *or* for doing a countdown timer.
This piece is sharp. Good on Orient for ditching the tachymeter, hope that design choice continues to spread. Why are 24hr indicators still a thing? Is it difficult to convert them to elapsed hour dials? Can we just have more two subdial varieties? Asking rhetorically, but man these things just won't phase out.
I almost bought the Orient over Seitona. But in the end, the Orient was a little large for my dainty, feminine wrists. The Seitona was more expensive, but had the right sized dial.
Marc, do you have a bracelet planned for the Speedtimers? Something with an on-the-fly adjustable clasp would be a differentiator against the few others making them out there. Thanks!
I got the orient mako panda on sale(last item) for 3,4 million IDR or around 220 US dollars. very happy with the watch so far. btw, the chrono minute stops after reaching 60 and not continue running
What is the Long Island price. Been looking at this watch for a year now. I have the large orient triton with the power meter in blue. It is one of my favorite watches. I like the Urban Gentry, and your channel. TY,
I love the Orient, I wanted Rolex, but didn't like the designs, then I saw the Orient panda and realized no need to flex and to be target during travelling, I want gorgeous watch I love to look at. Replaced the iron bracelet with white Nato strap
I love Orient (I do have a Kamasu with the red dial and it’s simply gorgeous), however I would still buy the Speedtimer if I got the budget for that. Better dimensions proportions and quality of construction overall in my opinion, plus I won’t never understand why Orient put a diver bezel on chronograph.
Marc, thanks for the video. I am so curious to see the movement architecture and compare it to the Seiko V175 and V192 movements. Also, have you heard of the reimagined Pogue that Saiko is coming out with in August? The SSC947 Special Edition.
It's a nice watch, but these things are highly subjective, and the white Speed Timer just looks better to me, I think mainly due to the bezel design, the slightly domed crystal and the better bracelet. That said, when I got mine I went with the JDM SKU given it was much cheaper than I could get the international one locally. As for Orient, they do make great watches overall -- My Kamasu is still one of my favourite daily drivers.
Really nice watch. But why, oh why do these major watch companies cheap out on the bracelet and clasp? You can get a Chinese watch (and an Islander, for that matter) for less with sapphire, solid links, solid end links, milled clasp and, now, on the fly micro adjustable clasps. It makes no sense.
Or if you don't mind putting in a battery I bought a Seiko brand meca quartz chronograph watch for under 200.00 USD. The leather strap it came with is not very good to keep in mind.
I really like the pepsi one and I was very close to ordering it from your site. I just can not justify spending the money on it right now lol. Too many car repairs in the near future 😅 I already have a Seiko Prospex Monster Antarctica Penguin "Save The Ocean" that I don't wear enough. I have a Seiko Presage and a Bulova 21 Jewel that I wear more often though
I understand why people balk at an ~42.5mm watch, but at 48mm lug-to-lug, it is quite wearable. My own wrist is ~6.5 inches, and these dimensions fit me just fine. A point for consideration: I think a sports watch should be larger. A bigger watch is easier to read at a glance, which is a bonus if you're in the middle of something that demands more of your attention than normal.
I prefer a simple fold over clasp with a row of holes to any high end milled clasp with a grand total of two micro adjust holes. That disqualifies the Seiko imo.
Wow! I just bought the white from Amazon Japan. I would have bought from you. I did buy a white curved end rubber bracelet, and I am one who asked you about a 22mm SS bracelet by email. I am interested. Ty. Also, bought a similar Tactical Frog that looks similar. The TF has a solar Seiko chrono. Both very accurate. Very important for me. I like to T Frog bracelet ok. No prob. Thanks! Lume much better on the Orient than T frog. Orient markers slightly blue, which is ok for me. Orient pushers more tactical than my copy of T frog.

Gah! It looks so good but that 24-hr subdial makes this a hard no. Otherwise I'd be putting my order in today. Why do they keep making those? 24-hour subdials are so worthless.
Kinda puts me off the Orients. That and the "tobacco" company logo, boring/ old fashioned looking hour and minute hands, oh and that clasp. Quite a list, best I keep looking!
What a terrific watch. Like everyone is saying, I wish it was smaller. Although judging from how it fits on your wrist, I could probably pull it off. Thanks for showing us the watch!
why are those virtually useless 24-hour complications there? were they originally made for those working in submarines or those who live down dark caves?
@islandwatch I think balance could have been retained with a more useful complication, such as a separate time zone, an alarm or an hour timer. Seiko and Orient are merely constricted by their mass production of this cheaper-to-make movement. Having said that, it seems most purchasers of chronometers and pilot watches buy them purely for their busy look.
