  • In today’s video we see the 3 ways that a pressure washer can damage a diesel particulate filter. To do this test I first cut open an old DPF and cut it into small pieces, and then we look at where the damage will occur. Watch and find out!

      Hi, video coming soon! :-) That's a lot of oil to get past the oil rings, unless your engine has a very high mileage - are you sure it isn't the turbo, or the rocker cover or head gasket?

    • @milutinovic90
      @milutinovic90 3 роки тому +1

      Turbo was first thing to check, I had a little bit of oil inside intercooler so turbo was sent to specialist to be rebuild (also he cleaned dpf). There are no oil leaks outside the engine so my mechanic concluded that oil rings are not good. I am not sure for mileage...for sure it is not correct because in Serbia majority of imported cars have incorrect mileage. Beside oil problem car is good condition, no rust, interior is really preserved so I am thinking the correct mileage is around 300k km...that is just me guessing :)

      Hi, thanks for watching, and for bringing up a very valid point! If I end up with a DPF that is no good for anything else, then a full-size test will be done. The important thing to note however is that almost all DPFs now have integrated catalysts, and a pressure washer will definitely ruin them.

      @@thomasglace6999 Hi, 2008 was in the transition period so it really depends on local laws and model release cycles. Sometimes you can tell by looking at the housing (or a diagram of it) and if there is a temperature sensor one third of the way along it, then there is more than just the DPF ceramic material in there.

      They put a tube in the intake and rev to about 1500 rpm in neutral for some hours (generally 2), than detach the tube and a run on street at high rpm to heat up and burn residues. They claim to clean Dpf, injectors and valves.
      Seems a little too simple without taking anything apart?

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, it could be useful for cleaning the intake system and valves as the process removes carbon (soot). However, it's not going to do anything to clean out the end-of-life ash deposits from a DPF, so a chemical clean is still needed when the DPF gets clogged.

  • @Mister5MasterToJa
    @Mister5MasterToJa Рік тому

    Also, how about backflushing the DPF using compressed air? You could get to each channel separately (if you cut the filter housing and then weld it back together) and most compressors do only 8 or 10 bar of pressure, so that wouldn't be that damaging I guess.

    • @StevenBTuner

      Hi, thanks for watching! A lot of DPFs are very enclosed in their housing with only a 2 - 3 inch inlet pipe - which makes knowing how far away the jet is, and what is being pointed at pretty challenging - especially with water and gunk flying straight back at you. I've got an app for just this car called FAP, it's telling me loads of info and my filter is good for now. But one reading in the app is "Deposits in FAP" and the number is 122 grams, slowly rising. Now what does this mean? My car does around 300 km between every regen
    Thanks again for great videos

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  3 роки тому +2

      Hi, thanks for watching and I'm glad you like the vids! If that 'deposits' number is that high just after a regen, then I would say that your filter is getting quite clogged up with ash. Has your car done more than 200,000kms? Also, 300kms between regens sounds very low too, which indicates that there is less and less room in the filter for the soot to accumulate between active regeneration cycles.

    • @Andy_83_SWE
      @Andy_83_SWE 3 роки тому

      @@StevenBTuner Hi
      Ok so a manual cleaning might be in it's place. No "deposits in FAP" doesn't get to zero after a regen, so I think that number is what's left and can't get rid of. A few minutes with the gas torch was enough to remove all of the black soot, but it wasn't enough to remove the ash residue. The different shades of ash depend on what it is made from - more red is probably more iron oxide (from the iron/steel in the engine), and more of a white shade probably indicates more phosphates/sulfates (from engine oil).

      Hi, that's my feeling too. I would recommend a much safer chemical clean like: ua-cam.com/video/LE1boZ3fhLg/v-deo.html

    I usually just wash My exaust By putting in a water hose in it with a running engine

      Hi, thanks for watching, and for sharing your method! The risk with that method is that if any water gets trapped in a blocked channel then it could instantly turn to steam and cause a crack in the ceramic. What kind of water flow and engine rpm are you using?

      Steven B. Tuner i dont know the pressure exactly but basically just regular gardening hose pressure. Basically the pressure that it is pouring out of the hose like from a tap. If i am not mistaken 7-10liters a minute i am pouring. RPMs at idle and once in a while i accelerate until 2.5 - 3k rpm

      @@davisliepins1380 I can't believe this method would work whatsoever, not without looking at the dpf internally, refitting, using your garden hose method, then pulling dpf out again to inspect

    Did I just ruin my dpf 🤣

    Why can’t you blow it out with a air hose

    • @StevenBTuner

      Hi, thanks for watching! Ash removal using air pressure is used after a DPF has been heated for 8 hours in a high temperature oven. Without the heating to break down the ash it is much too stuck on to remove just with air.

      Hi, it is certainly a possibility depending on the design of the DPF casing.

    Ridiculous that we have to fix something that shouldn't be on the car in the first place... I rather remove the dpf and egr and have a healthy engine without problems
