I am not a mechanic but prepared to give things a go to save some money. Thanks to the video I was able to accomplish replacing the alternator without any drama. Patience and persistence was the key especially when removing and reinstalling the alternator through the narrow gap on the side of the car. Thanks again, great help!!

This video absolutely helped me change the alternator on a 06 Ford Escape. The worst part of the job was the air cowl mounted on the alternator. I can see why a shop would charge $1500 but I was able to get it done in about 5 hours in my shop with floor jacks. Thanks for the helpful video

I probably spent a week on making that video it was very very upsetting. Thanks for updating this video after clearly changing a lot of these and getting experience with them. Going to do mine soon and never buy another of these cars, who puts an alternator on the back of the block, honestly. A tip for you, your mic might be shot, but you can easily "normalize" the audio with your editor. This levels out the volume, so that viewers don't turn up the volume for the quiet bits and then have their ears blown out by the loud bits! Otherwise your video is great, thanks for sharing.
Yeah the mic was a problem that day I still put the video up because it took so much time and my channel is still really small so I don’t have big bucks to spend on really good equipment hopefully someday though

@@sharpcarco My sis has a Mazda Tribute that was having issues, so after checking it out i found the alternator was bad. The alternator I think was $160 bucks and she ask if I would put it on for her and her request was met with a resounding NO! 2 previous elbow surgeries pretty much put an end to me doing the kind of job that this would be especially with no lift available. I explained it to her and she said she would just get her son (my nephew) to come over and "throw it on", and I thought to myself I can't wait to hear from him. He takes one look at it and says hed rather give birth to a flaming porcupine than tackle that. 😄 Long story short she has to put it in the shop and its gonna cost a couple hundred bucks plus the cost of the alternator. The funny part was that she called around to get some labor prices before asking me and my nephew and ultimately thought one of us could do it a whole lot cheaper. Having it on a lift would make things a little easier, but I digress. Moral of the story: This is one headache of a repair if you decide to tackle it. Btw I like the way you put "easiest" in the title as opposed to just "easy". 😄I

Well the audio was messed up for a little while because my mike wasn’t picking up properly and unfortunately I’m not a super rich guy so it took me a couple of months before I could afford a new Mic . Otherwise known it has a new iPhone LOL Thank you very much for the kind words I greatly appreciate them
You will need the following sizes 8 mm socket 10 mm socket 13 mm socket and wrench 18 mm socket and wrench Dont have the size of the axle nut socket think its 1 1/8th inch. Ill edit later Expect to remove the mounting bracket and jack the engine up several inches. aim the pulley of the alternator down to remove and install it. ( when you find the sweet spot doing this there is plenty of room ) The job took me three hours total but my wheel was seized onto the rotor. It can be done in two but expect three hours for a first-time job.
Hey Clay I replaced the shock mount & I must say I'm in Ohio and have ppl coming from Philly , Chicago & Memphis for repairs w/ the glue & screw way . Tks
Personally, not my favorite way of doing it but yeah, for a number of years I had people coming from all over the place. I don’t do as many now, as I did before, I’m sure there’s people out there that will do them cheaper than I will but I do them correctly so. i need advice...I smell rubber burning smell inside of my car. I kept trying to figure out what the smell was and where it was coming from. I just went outside, it’s been sitting for a couple of hours. I popped the hood, did not smell anything. Then realized the smell is in the cabin. Not really a difficult job, but damn, how convoluted. Is this a really poor designed layout to make the alternator (common thing to change) so difficult to reach, or a really good designed layout in that they were able to cram everything into and overly-small compartment? Great video, thank you!
I've pulled about 20 and I use to do it throu the bottom but found out if u hook a strap to it once it's off and Feed the strap up that back side of motor u can pull it up throu there but u have to twist it a certain way it will come out that way
Depends on where the oil is if it’s sitting on top of the valve cover it is the spark plug seals and you need new valve covers or cover If it’s on the side near the harmonic balance or you need a new front seal or the timing cover needs to be resealed If it’s in the rear of the engine meaning the part that connects to the transmission it needs a new rear main seal which means the engine or the transmission Hass to come out and it needs to be replaced

They always leak from the timing chain cover. Most of the time not worth the time and money to repair. Fuck it. Let it leak. I’m thinking of a way to divert the leaking oil away from the hot exhaust. When I run my heat I get burning oil fumes into the car

I'm trying to do this same project right now and I'm not the most experienced kid around. But why do you need to remove the nuts holding on the engine mount?
To make this job a lot easier remove the black air flow cover that sits on top of the alternator. This will allow you to avoid having to struggle with it to get it out.
Welp.. I've done enough other work on my escape, and this is the last straw. What a ridiculous, obnoxious job to have to do to change an alternator. No thank you. Served me about 50,000km for 4 years. With a plethora of other problems, it's time to go.
Sometimes they’re just lemons but my experience with them has been really good I’ve had alternator problems and some rust on the rear of the shock tower but for the most part I can say I’m extremely happy with the ones that I’ve had I wish you the best of luck anyway God bless have a great day
While putting axle back in my strut spring sprung and turned so I couldn't line the strut bolts up again.how do you recompress and turn the post to line it up. I am a real beginner at this

Why would you do that? I’m sure you could but here in the north that’s not a good idea because if you remove the frame bolts and one of them spins inside the body that’s going to be big problems.

I meant to add just to makr a guess its to keep the engine slightly lower so u can get to the alternator a little better? Would this put anything else in a bind? Usually if im removing a motor mount im putting a jack with a wood block under the engine to keep it from going down.
@@sharpcarco On my 05 xlt 3.0 escape i just managed to pull the alternator out the bottom without removing the motor mount. Still at it after 5hrs omg if I could beat the people who designed this..
Much easier way is to remove the exhaust pipe, and bring the alternator up the firewall and bring it out the top and replace the exact same way, took me an hr and a half. No need to remove the tie rods or anything like that.
Was yours a four-cylinder? And how the hell did you get the O2 sensor off if it was a six-cylinder? I’m kind of curious how all these people that don’t work on cars for living say things like this is the first time I’ve ever actually had someone say to do it that way. But I don’t quite understand how removing the intake and removing the exhaust manifold is simpler than doing what I did. no chance of breaking anything the way that I did it.
Took me a little bit to remember what you were talking about. I have another video about removing Ford Escape alternators under my Ford Escape playlist. And it talks about that cover. If I remember correctly that covers just a pain in the ass
You think its not gonna come out but then you twist it just right and it falls out. Then you think you're not gonna get it back in until you twist it just right and it falls in to place. Not the easiest job for sure but definitely something the average DIY'er can probably do.
It’s a good feeling when it comes out and then when you put it back in !!!!! The greatest feeling is when your done and you know you saved a lot of money and did it yourself !!!! Great job!!!
So are there two mounting patterns for these? Our 02 Escape has a bracket between the alternator and engine, alternator bolts to bracket, bracket to engine. The last person to change it stripped the inner threads on the block, my jb-weld fix can only last so long. almost 2 years now
OKI asked you a question before and I got the water issue fixed in my Ford Escape it was the drain tubes were not draining. And I have had this problem too it's the alternator is overcharging And I noticed that the battery light comes on but I'm having other issues and I'm hoping it's related to that like my Inside light when I was having it run went out twice it started to be hard to sometimes the power steering doesn't work I had to turn it off and on a few timis on a few times just to get home from work tonight 8 the heater sometimes doesn't come on with that little battery light is on in the car and sometimes it comes on and then it shuts itself off and it comes on again so I just had my oil changed they top off all the fluids I am going to check the power steering fluid tomorrow right now it's dark it's after 11 and that's thin and that's when I get off work so I'm gonna have to do it tomorrow but I'm just wondering if that would be part of the overcharging of the alternator the battery is new got it in July only had this Ford Escape for 7 months. I did get money from my bank and I'm gonna get this alternator hopefully put on this weekend it's supposed to be warmer so just seeing what you think about it because I don't want to be stuck in a whole bunch of money into this vehicle I know it's September and it's got a 120000 miles on it but that's actually all I could get at the time since they are taking money away from us at my work because of their bankruptcy so they're bankruptcy so work it and screwed so I had to really be careful what I could spend monthly on a car payment and be able to live live in a house have food have all my medicines and all of that so this is kind of they knew I needed a car and they took advantage of it Thank you for any help you can give me
I watched a mechanic replace one of these without having to remove the axle, he simply dropped the compressor and had plenty of room to take off the alternator

She came through it ok, but she had to bury her mom and dad both. They passed away one day apart, and her brother who also contracted it? He was buried one week later. So first off I’m going to tell you that I’m not wearing a mask because of corona…….. well I guess technically it is because of corona. When they locked us all down they shut down all the doctors offices that were unnecessary like the dentist this was particularly a problem for me because I had false teeth that my dog decided that he was going to eat one day I guess that’s what I get for letting them lay around and even if I could’ve took them out of his poop I don’t think even me with my disgusting ways would’ve ever put them back in my mouth…… And since the government was handing out so much free money except for the people like me that are self-employed…… I could not afford to get new ones and I was embarrassed about it…… well if you’ve seen any of my latest adventures you obviously know I still have no fucking teeth and it doesn’t bother me because I no longer wear a mask…… i’m still not making any money and the government still hasn’t given me any of my money back that I paid in taxes…… needless to say I’m OK with who I am and things are not always what you think they are….. Well being a UA-camr does not pay as well as you think it Would and overtime the mic gets dirt inside it ( so I just basically haven’t had the money to buy a new one) . It’s much more complicated than that but that’s the short version
Well, I could see somebody charging six or $700 for it. It’s not a really fun job but I don’t know about 1300 that sounds a little bit ridiculous but I suppose if they’re billing for the alternator and the labor he probably want to go find another place because they’re charging list prices for the alternator which is usually double or triple whatever they actually cost then they’re also probably a real high dollar place

And within the first minute I tell you what kind of engine it is and since they were the same from 2001 to 2012 for the V6 model they didn’t really make a difference…… because if it said I was working on a 2004 mouth breathers would think that the procedure was only for the 2004 model when it actually covers 11 years I would probably recommend you probably you leave working on cars up to professionals if you don’t understand why it doesn’t have a year or make and model in it……….. The thing that you obviously don’t know because you’re ignorant and that’s not meant as an insult well Kinda….. Little passive aggressive anyways ignorance is the lack of knowledge I haven’t figured out if it’s the inability to understand it once you’re told See when automobile manufacturers make vehicles they’re based upon this thing called profits it’s something that every single producer of anything really strives for most of all during this process when automobiles are manufactured they tend to make the same automobile for years sometimes even over a decade which is 10 years just in case you don’t know…. Like in this situation the Ford escape that is pictured on the thumbnail and in the video was made since 2001 to 2012 know if you had a different Looking than Ford Escape this video probably would not help you…….. @@sharpcarco My sis has a Mazda Tribute that was having issues, so after checking it out i found the alternator was bad. The alternator I think was $160 bucks and she ask if I would put it on for her and her request was met with a resounding NO! 2 previous elbow surgeries pretty much put an end to me doing the kind of job that this would be especially with no lift available. I explained it to her and she said she would just get her son (my nephew) to come over and "throw it on", and I thought to myself I can't wait to hear from him.
He takes one look at it and says hed rather give birth to a flaming porcupine than tackle that. 😄
Long story short she has to put it in the shop and its gonna cost a couple hundred bucks plus the cost of the alternator.
The funny part was that she called around to get some labor prices before asking me and my nephew and ultimately thought one of us could do it a whole lot cheaper. Having it on a lift would make things a little easier, but I digress. Moral of the story: This is one headache of a repair if you decide to tackle it. Btw I like the way you put "easiest" in the title as opposed to just "easy". 😄I

Well the audio was messed up for a little while because my mike wasn’t picking up properly and unfortunately I’m not a super rich guy so it took me a couple of months before I could afford a new Mic . Otherwise known it has a new iPhone LOL Thank you very much for the kind words I greatly appreciate them
You will need the following sizes
8 mm socket
10 mm socket
13 mm socket and wrench
18 mm socket and wrench
Dont have the size of the axle nut socket think its 1 1/8th inch. Ill edit later
Expect to remove the mounting bracket and jack the engine up several inches.
aim the pulley of the alternator down to remove and install it. ( when you find the sweet spot doing this there is plenty of room )
The job took me three hours total but my wheel was seized onto the rotor. It can be done in two but expect three hours for a first-time job.

Then 3 seconds later I get my ear drums blown to shit so I have to put it on minimum volume. Then 3 seconds later I can’t hear anything again. Makes the video very frustrating to watch

i need advice...I smell rubber burning smell inside of my car. I kept trying to figure out what the smell was and where it was coming from. Not really a difficult job, but damn, how convoluted. Is this a really poor designed layout to make the alternator (common thing to change) so difficult to reach, or a really good designed layout in that they were able to cram everything into and overly-small compartment?

I've pulled about 20 and I use to do it throu the bottom but found out if u hook a strap to it once it's off and Feed the strap up that back side of motor u can pull it up throu there but u have to twist it a certain way it will come out that way

Depends on where the oil is if it’s sitting on top of the valve cover it is the spark plug seals and you need new valve covers or cover
If it’s on the side near the harmonic balance or you need a new front seal or the timing cover needs to be resealed
If it’s in the rear of the engine meaning the part that connects to the transmission it needs a new rear main seal which means the engine or the transmission Hass to come out and it needs to be replaced

They always leak from the timing chain cover. Most of the time not worth the time and money to repair. Fuck it. Let it leak. I’m thinking of a way to divert the leaking oil away from the hot exhaust. When I run my heat I get burning oil fumes into the car

I'm trying to do this same project right now and I'm not the most experienced kid around. But why do you need to remove the nuts holding on the engine mount?
Because the cradles can I have to come down to be able to get the alternator out
Do I need to support the motor with a jack when I take the nuts off or no?
To make this job a lot easier remove the black air flow cover that sits on top of the alternator. This will allow you to avoid having to struggle with it to get it out.

Welp.. I've done enough other work on my escape, and this is the last straw. What a ridiculous, obnoxious job to have to do to change an alternator. No thank you. Served me about 50,000km for 4 years. With a plethora of other problems, it's time to go.
Sometimes they’re just lemons but my experience with them has been really good I’ve had alternator problems and some rust on the rear of the shock tower but for the most part I can say I’m extremely happy with the ones that I’ve had I wish you the best of luck anyway God bless have a great day

Why would you do that? I’m sure you could but here in the north that’s not a good idea because if you remove the frame bolts and one of them spins inside the body that’s going to be big problems.

I meant to add just to makr a guess its to keep the engine slightly lower so u can get to the alternator a little better? Would this put anything else in a bind? Usually if im removing a motor mount im putting a jack with a wood block under the engine to keep it from going down.
Sometimes you can get them out and sometimes you can’t without removing that bolt
@@sharpcarco On my 05 xlt 3.0 escape i just managed to pull the alternator out the bottom without removing the motor mount. Still at it after 5hrs omg if I could beat the people who designed this..
Much easier way is to remove the exhaust pipe, and bring the alternator up the firewall and bring it out the top and replace the exact same way, took me an hr and a half. No need to remove the tie rods or anything like that.

And how the hell did you get the O2 sensor off if it was a six-cylinder?
I’m kind of curious how all these people that don’t work on cars for living say things like this is the first time I’ve ever actually had someone say to do it that way. But I don’t quite understand how removing the intake and removing the exhaust manifold is simpler than doing what I did. no chance of breaking anything the way that I did it.

There’s a local place here in Grand Rapids called Quickstart battery that I’ve been going to for a couple of decades and he always rebuilds mine.

You think its not gonna come out but then you twist it just right and it falls out. Then you think you're not gonna get it back in until you twist it just right and it falls in to place. Not the easiest job for sure but definitely something the average DIY'er can probably do.
It’s a good feeling when it comes out and then when you put it back in !!!!! The greatest feeling is when your done and you know you saved a lot of money and did it yourself !!!!

So are there two mounting patterns for these? Our 02 Escape has a bracket between the alternator and engine, alternator bolts to bracket, bracket to engine.
The last person to change it stripped the inner threads on the block, my jb-weld fix can only last so long. almost 2 years now
If its a 4 cylinder just take the top alternator stud out and it'll slide out easily through the top.
Definitely way easier to take one out of a four-cylinder. That’s like a 30 minute job

Not isre how I did it.... But I ended up with my fuel tank on the ground and alternator still on the Escape.... Think I missed a step...
OKI asked you a question before and I got the water issue fixed in my Ford Escape it was the drain tubes were not draining. And I have had this problem too it's the alternator is overcharging And I noticed that the battery light comes on but I'm having other issues and I'm hoping it's related to that like my Inside light when I was having it run went out twice it started to be hard to sometimes the power steering doesn't work I had to turn it off and on a few timis on a few times just to get home from work tonight 8 the heater sometimes doesn't come on with that little battery light is on in the car and sometimes it comes on and then it shuts itself off and it comes on again so I just had my oil changed they top off all the fluids I am going to check the power steering fluid tomorrow right now it's dark it's after 11 and that's thin and that's when I get off work so I'm gonna have to do it tomorrow but I'm just wondering if that would be part of the overcharging of the alternator the battery is new got it in July only had this Ford Escape for 7 months. I did get money from my bank and I'm gonna get this alternator hopefully put on this weekend it's supposed to be warmer so just seeing what you think about it because I don't want to be stuck in a whole bunch of money into this vehicle I know it's September and it's got a 120000 miles on it but that's actually all I could get at the time since they are taking money away from us at my work because of their bankruptcy so they're bankruptcy so work it and screwed so I had to really be careful what I could spend monthly on a car payment and be able to live live in a house have food have all my medicines and all of that so this is kind of they knew I needed a car and they took advantage of it Thank you for any help you can give me

I watched a mechanic replace one of these without having to remove the axle, he simply dropped the compressor and had plenty of room to take off the alternator

The easiest way to change the alternator is to take the plastic thing, looks like a vent to me, and pull it straight up

The book says you are supposed to replace the intermediate shaft seal everytime this is removed

They make no such thing as a V4 , But no this is not the same and it the alternator on the four-cylinder is much simpler to replace

Take the top stud out and the alternator will easily slip out of the top, just changed 1 out within 45mins

They made the Escape with a timing chain so they got rid of one problem - replacing the BELT

So first off I’m going to tell you that I’m not wearing a mask because of corona…….. well I guess technically it is because of corona. When they locked us all down they shut down all the doctors offices that were unnecessary like the dentist this was particularly a problem for me because I had false teeth that my dog decided that he was going to eat one day I guess that’s what I get for letting them lay around and even if I could’ve took them out of his poop I don’t think even me with my disgusting ways would’ve ever put them back in my mouth……

Well being a UA-camr does not pay as well as you think it Would and overtime the mic gets dirt inside it ( so I just basically haven’t had the money to buy a new one) .

I would’ve thought that the thumbnail would’ve gave you the information you needed for the year. And within the first minute I tell you what kind of engine it is and since they were the same from 2001 to 2012 for the V6 model they didn’t really make a difference…… because if it said I was working on a 2004 mouth breathers would think that the procedure was only for the 2004 model when it actually covers 11 years I would probably recommend you probably you leave working on cars up to professionals if you don’t understand why it doesn’t have a year or make and model in it………..
