PISSED Charles Melton did not get a nomination. His performance haunted me for days. They got the whole category wrong. Also sad that both female leads were overlooked for May December. Ruffalo will hopefully win.
Downey is the front runner so no Ruffalo ain't winning. Gosling and Downey definitely benefited from their movies' blockbuster success cuz Charles and Defoe should have also been recognized. Or Dominic Sessa for the Holdovers or the Blackberry actor were all more deserving on merit alone but looks like most voters probably haven't seen Blackberry.
Hot take: Benecio Del Toro in Reptile/Teyana Taylor in A Thousand and One were sleepers that I knew didn't have a chance, but I thought they both killed those roles despite how the films were received. Another fun video dudes. Here for the Oppen-shade lol. Thanks!
So basically 6 or 7 movies (Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Zone of Interest) are being shoved down our throats for EVERY damn category!?! 😳🙄 That's gonna be a NO from me dawg!! 🐶😉
Sandra Hueller was absolutely BRILLIANT in Anatomy of a Fall!! I really hope she wins and upsets the 2 frontrunner! It was such a tricky well calibrated performance where she was in almost every scene and had to run every gamut of emotions! I feel it should really be between Hueller and Stone.
I AGREE BUT POLITICS MAY GET IN THE WAY SADLY. DO YOU THINK THEY WILL REWARD AN EUROPEAN ACTRESS'??? I HOPE SO IF THEY KNOW WHAT REAL ACTING IS. SHE ABSOLUTELY SHOULD WIN
Nick and Joseph I so agree with you guys about RDJ and Emily Blunt. Their performances were okay but far from extraordinary. This is coming from a RDJ and Oppenheimer fan. Also Joseph I completely concur that Taraji outshined everyone else in "The Color Purple." Granted I haven't seen either film yet. But from what I've been told "Saltburn" and "All of Us Strangers" being completely unrecognized is shocking. I was expecting some huge surprise considering the fierce competition. Yet that never materialized.
The fight in Anatomy didn't feel entirely real to me, but that feeling made complete sense because of the context. When we learn that he may have picked the fight for "research", the way he fights makes way more sense. She's fighting for real, but he's fighting like he's on a reality show.
The best kind of "predictions" is like yours, laidback! Also, just like Nick, save the 'best' comment with lots of 🙄and an amused partner like Joseph!😊
Overall I’m okay with the noms… I do have my snubs that make me sad 😔 Films: Saltburn All Of Us Strangers The Iron Claw Actors: Andrew Scott "All Of Us Strangers” Barry Keoghan “Saltburn” Supporting Actor: Charles Melton "May December" Dominic Sessa "The Holdovers" Willem Dafoe "Poor Things" Milo Machado Graner "Anatomy of a Fall" Supporting Actress Rosamund Pike "Saltburn" Claire Foy "All of Us Strangers"
Society of the Snow should have gotten a nomination for Score. It is clear these people didn't see the movies, John Williams got a nomination for being John Williams.
RDJ for Oppenheimer and Ryan Gosling for Barbie 😂 The Oscars have really lost their prestige. There are many indie/streaming/non-blockbuster films that had infinitely better performances.
I like the score from American Fiction. The composer did a good with layering musical texture to the film. It's more than background music. The character's name Thelonious "Monk" Ellison which is a nod to jazz music, Monk, the jazz pianist and Ralph Ellison was also a jazz crited, played the trumpet and studied music at Tuskegee before becoming a writer.
I wish you guys would do a live review next time of Blue Valentine or Blue is the Warmest Color for Valentines. Would love to hear your thoughts about it.
I read an article last year about the original song category and how folks are upset that the songs that usually win are generic "overcome obstacles with love" or the song has almost nothing to do with the film. I'd really like to see either Barbie song win, because I thought they both related well to the movie.
It's been seriously tarnished by Armie Hammer's behaviors and public image nightmare, but "Call Me By Your Name" was a film where the music was completely integral to the film. I don't think that film would work without the particular songs they used for key moments. They really do make the film what it is.
Big fan of your reviews, am directed to films when I see you’ve reviewed something (Society of the Snow for eg) and I’ll come here once I’ve seen a film. I agree re Huller, she is the best of the actress bunch however Gladstone will win it. I hope Zone of Interest comes through in some categories, agree, especially sound - it was extraordinary. I loved Giamatti in Holdovers but he plays the same character as Sideways and Cillian Murphy seems to be the favorite. I’ve not seen Oppenheimer yet as I’m not a big fan of lots of talk. I also have held back on Poor Things as I generally dislike the esoteric and absurdity of the director’s films, but I will see it eventually - especially based on your rave reviews. Barbie was not to my style, and while I really enjoy Gerwig as an actress, not so much as a director. Thanks for your reviews!
I missed the live 😢 I have been looking for the pod/live when Nick talks about giving Isabelle her “favourite” perfume. What was that perfume? ❤ I now say “favourite” that way now for everything 😊
It Never Went Away from American Symphony had an IMPACT on ME....I downloaded the entire Jon Batiste collection after that awe inspiring cancer film . . .I watched Late Night with Colbert somewhat regularly but it was not until that film that I gave him a chance. What a cool Christian dude!
I'm seeing this 7 months late but finally I feel seen that that robert downey jr. performance was not awards-worthy whatsoever. I felt so gaslit with everyone acting like this was some great performance when it was just like whatever and also not an actor that needed an oscar whatsoever it's not like he's made so many great contributions to cinema or anything.
I love some of Yorgos Lanthimos work, but specially in his later work, he annoys me the same way González Iñarritu does. Because there's points in their movies where they put themselves as the main characters instead of the story, it's like they draw attention to what they can do, instead of serving the movie. In that sense, Oppenheimer show more restrain than other aclaimed auteurs. Even during the trinity test, Nolan does more with the sound than with visual effects or that giant Imax screen. You should watch The Eternal Memory, the chilean documentary. And Greta Lee and Glenn Howerton where done dirty.
"Did any of those Barbie songs deserve an Oscar?" Well, What Was I Made For definitely for me. Yeah ita a downer but reflects the themes of gender identiity in this movie. And that song has been playing on a local pop radio. It is Billie Eilish after all. 😄
Quite possibly the most boring list of nominees. Has Nick ever written or talked about the process for selecting the international film nominees? I find that process so confusing, but can't find much info on it.
It's overrated but fun. I can see why people like it. I'm still surprised it got nominated for the Oscars though since they usually snub comedies. Barbie kind of reminds me of Elf. A naive character goes out into the real world and shines a light on society with a lot of laughs.
Storytelling elevates acting. The Color Purple “reimagining” felt like a “remake” that we didn’t need. The performances in the musical were good but not outstanding. The original film was a once in a lifetime film/cast that we don’t deserve. The film was a first for many actors/comedians that were not well-known for their acting at the time. The musical will always be in the shadow of the original. I agree with Joseph the “Taraji” truth train backfired on any other possible acknowledgments that this film could have received. Let’s be honest in 2024, people don’t need much to set Oprah on fire. The Oprah hate bled into people not wanting to watch the film. In reality many people weren’t going to see it anyway. I believe that Da’Vine Joy should win best supporting. Danielle was fun, but I didn’t have the connection to her plight in the same manner in which I had to Oprah’s portrayal of Sophia. I shed a tear when she thanked Celie for her support but her portrayal sometimes made me forget how disruptive this woman’s life was. Her portrayal seemed more comedic. I liked America’s monologue but it didn’t wow me in the same way in which other famous monologues have. Take the monologue away, America wouldn’t have been as memorable. If you think about it, America’s connection with Barbie, felt like Joy in the animated movie inside out trying to bring happiness to the little girl.
Nothing for All of us Strangers. Travesty.
I want to see that movie in the theatre.
The movie was good but I’m not surprised nor sad it got snubbed
I hate Barbie now because of it was not in Adapted All Of Us Strangers would’ve been the lone screenplay nomination
Having just seen All of Us Strangers, I couldn’t agree more.
Also sad not one Color Purple song nomination but... multiple Barbie songs??? How???
Not cool.
I loved Anatomy of a Fall so much.
PISSED Charles Melton did not get a nomination. His performance haunted me for days. They got the whole category wrong. Also sad that both female leads were overlooked for May December. Ruffalo will hopefully win.

Or Dominic Sessa for the Holdovers or the Blackberry actor were all more deserving on merit alone but looks like most voters probably haven't seen Blackberry.
I love this reaction 😂😂😂😂
I loved American Fiction and I can’t wait to see Poor Things and Zone of Interest!
The RDJ shade. Lol!
Hot take: Benecio Del Toro in Reptile/Teyana Taylor in A Thousand and One were sleepers that I knew didn't have a chance, but I thought they both killed those roles despite how the films were received. Another fun video dudes. Here for the Oppen-shade lol. Thanks!
A Thousand and One has great reviews
So basically 6 or 7 movies (Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Zone of Interest) are being shoved down our throats for EVERY damn category!?! 😳🙄
That's gonna be a NO from me dawg!! 🐶😉
“Listen” I think was written for the movie version of Dreamgirls
Sandra Hueller was absolutely BRILLIANT in Anatomy of a Fall!! I really hope she wins and upsets the 2 frontrunner! It was such a tricky well calibrated performance where she was in almost every scene and had to run every gamut of emotions! I feel it should really be between Hueller and Stone.
And the three languages!
Agree
Yeah...but it's not happening because we know why. She will be the Cate Blanchett of this year.
I AGREE BUT POLITICS MAY GET IN THE WAY SADLY. DO YOU THINK THEY WILL REWARD AN EUROPEAN ACTRESS'??? I HOPE SO IF THEY KNOW WHAT REAL ACTING IS. SHE ABSOLUTELY SHOULD WIN
Joseph thought the writing in that Anatomy scene was very real because he's come close to pushing Nick over a balcony a few times?!?!? :- 0
Nick and Joseph I so agree with you guys about RDJ and Emily Blunt. Their performances were okay but far from extraordinary. This is coming from a RDJ and Oppenheimer fan. I’m sure that Oppenheimer will win big, because Hollywood cannot let go of their obsession with biopics 🙄
The best kind of "predictions" is like yours, laidback! Also, just like Nick, save the 'best' comment with lots of 🙄and an amused partner like Joseph!😊
Overall I’m okay with the noms… I do have my snubs that make me sad 😔

Zac Efron in The Iron Claw 😢
Society of the Snow should have gotten a nomination for Score. It is clear these people didn't see the movies, John Williams got a nomination for being John Williams.
Sad no Leo, Tariji, Greta Lee or Teyana Taylor nods 😢
The Billie Eilish tune was cute but Oscar worthy?
All of these Barbie nominations?!?!!? The Oscar's is trash
Barbie and Oppenheimer are about to make this a super unfun viewing experience.
RDJ for Oppenheimer and Ryan Gosling for Barbie 😂 The Oscars have really lost their prestige. There are many indie/streaming/non-blockbuster films that had infinitely better performances.
i'm OBSESSED with how you guys pronounce these names... but most of all mark ROOFalo
I keep missing your lives. Fun time!
No Charles Melton 😣
That local Minnesota production of Dreamgirls... raggedy! But they did their best... yes they did! 😅🤣😂 (Bless their lil' hearts) ❤️
Will you both please review Anatomy of a Fall?
I read an article last year about the original song category and how folks are upset that the songs that usually win are generic "overcome obstacles with love" or the song has almost nothing to do with the film. Robert Downey Jr was arguably the best Actor in Oppenheimer so it makes sense.
Big fan of your reviews, am directed to films when I see you’ve reviewed something (Society of the Snow for eg) and I’ll come here once I’ve seen a film. I loved Being Julia but my favorite Annette Benning is 20th Century Women.
I missed the live 😢

I'm mad that Dominic Sessa was shut out - he was amazing in The Holdovers
I've seen a majority of the nominees this year and, yet, the best performance (to me, regardless of gender) was Eita Nagayama in Monster.
Charles Melton deserved that nomination and that Oscar 100%... Also no All of us Strangers? Far superior to Barbie and Oppenheimer!
Poor Things Poor Things Poor Things!!! YES!!!!!👏🏼❤️
It also annoys me Barbie getting nominated just cause is popular.
Godzilla snubbed!
Zac Efron = should have been nominated. Sandra should win = amazing performance and in almost every scene
I love your shirt Nick

Not Joe 😂😂😂😂
Hi from NYC!!
Hi from San Francisco! 🌉
Yes, my girl Taraji was robbed! Like Emily Blunt did not need to be there...
Wait the movie is called Barbie and the actress that played her was not nomied. Yet the other actors were nomied.
No Barbie
Poor Things for the win!
“Ta taaa” 😊
Quite possibly the most boring list of nominees. Has Nick ever written or talked about the process for selecting the international film nominees? I find that process so confusing, but can't find much info on it.
Melton was just dissed and dismissed. 😢
completely agree with RDJ. his performance was so bland to me lol
I thought Oppenheimer was terrible...LOL did not enjoy that movie at all #sorrynotsorry
All my friends are DL not-Barbie fans. It’s tough being a broad who doesn’t love that movie.
It's overrated but fun. I can see why people like it. I'm still surprised it got nominated for the Oscars though since they usually snub comedies.
Barbie kind of reminds me of Elf. A naive character goes out into the real world and shines a light on society with a lot of laughs.
Glad you’re tired of Barbie. Glad you’re tired of Oppenheimer.
Please… I’m tired too. Join my club. I have jackets… 😅

Barbie > Napoleon
I am so bummed. Horror films are always getting overlooked. Tobin Bell should've been nominated.
Still annoyed at the Ruffalo nod. Totally overblown and cartoonish.
