    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkanoid
Arkanoid (アルカノイド Arukanoido?) is an arcade game developed by Taito in 1986. It is based upon Atari's Breakout games of the 1970s. The title refers to a doomed "mothership" from which the player's ship, the Vaus, escapes.
    Overview:
Much like the game Breakout, the player controls the "Vaus", a space vessel that acts as the game's "paddle" which prevents a ball from falling from the playing field, attempting to bounce it against a number of bricks. The ball striking a brick causes the brick to disappear. When all the bricks are gone, the player goes to the next level, where another pattern of bricks appears. There are a number of variations (bricks that have to be hit multiple times, flying enemy ships, etc.) and power-up capsules to enhance the Vaus (expand the Vaus, multiply the number of balls, equip a laser cannon, break directly to the next level, etc.), but the gameplay remains the same.
At round 33, the final stage, the player will take on the game's boss, "DOH", a head resembling moai.[1] Once a player reaches round 33, he must defeat DOH with his remaining extra lives because there are no continues on the final round.
The game opens with a monologue stating the following: "THE TIME AND ERA OF THIS STORY IS UNKNOWN. AFTER THE MOTHERSHIP "ARKANOID" WAS DESTROYED, A SPACECRAFT "VAUS" SCRAMBLED AWAY FROM IT. BUT ONLY TO BE TRAPPED IN SPACE WARPED BY SOMEONE........"
A second monologue is at the end of the game, after destroying the "dimension-controlling fort" that looks like a red wire-frame Moai. DIMENSION-CONTROLLING FORT "DOH" HAS NOW BEEN DEMOLISHED, AND TIME STARTED FLOWING REVERSELY. "VAUS" MANAGED TO ESCAPE FROM THE DISTORTED SPACE. BUT THE REAL VOYAGE OF "ARKANOID" IN THE GALAXY HAS ONLY STARTED......"

There was also a Intellivision Homebrew clone of Arkanoid called Stonik and it was very well done had the power ups and those things that float around and it had real cool music, was definitly Arcade Quality and proof that the Intellivison wa a system capable of playing quality arcade games of the 80's unlike the Atari VCS.

For the MSX version, this is a Japanese game (NTSC/60Hz) and you seem to be playing it in PAL/50Hz this will make it run 16,7% slower than intended.
This game also supports its proprietary paddle controller. It's autodetected by the game and emulated with the mouse in most emulators.

WOW the Mac version had BOTH Colors!!!!! Black and White!!! Back then, you got a 9", Black and White, screen with a one button mouse, a Single Tasking OS, No Hardware accelerated Graphics and mediocre sound for the low, low price about $3,000.00!
Compared to the Amiga with 4096 colors, 4 channel stereo sound, a Fully Pre-emptive OS, Hardware accelerated graphics, a 13" screen, the abitlity to upgrade the CPU/Memory/hard drive controllers via a full function expansion port all at half the cost of the Mac.
The Atari ST did not have many of the features of the Amiga, but it was even cheaper and had a Midi port.

The BBC Micro version was so fast. It's almost too fast to be playable, and even collecting an S capsule didn't really help. But, there was a very simple but awkward cheat. The DELETE and COPY keys at the bottom right of the keyboard were the pause and resume keys (whichever way around that was). If you kept them held down, the game would keep constantly pausing and resuming in quick succession, thereby slowing the action down immensely.
I seem to recall that I used to regularly score over 150,000 with those two keys held down the entire time, then had to have my fingers prised from the keys at the end of a mega Arkanoid session. Used to be able to play for hours on end but my fingers would be sore after all that time. Used to get so many extra lives they would disappear off the bottom of the screen.

FYI, the Tandy Color Computer (CoCo) cartridge actually contains two different ports of the game: one for the CoCo 3 (as shown in this video) and a simpler one for the CoCo 1 & 2. I played the latter back in the day because I had a CoCo 2.

I just watched the movie "Pixels" tonight... they screwed up repeatedly throughout the movie. The Video sent to the stars was in 1982, (one of my favorite years). But they screwed up the pop stars and music. Then they had the wrong video games. They tried to pawn off Arkanoid as Breakout, (Arkanoid came out in 86. ), Duckhunt came out in 85! They tried to portray Nintendo as the dominant force in 1982. But In 1982 The Only Thing you had from Nintendo was Donkey Kong... it was cool, but certainly not the top game. At that time Atari had Asteroids, Dig Dug, Centipede, Milipede, Tempest, Battle zone, Asteroids Deluxe, The Red Baron, Williams had Defender, Joust, Robotron, Bubbles, and Stargate (Defender 2). There was also, Missle Command, Pole Position, Lunar Lander, Space Invaders, Boot Hill, Gunfight, Biplanes, the Tank series, Pong, Computer Space, Space Panic, Scramble, Super Cobra, Moon Patrol, Wizards of Wor, Galaga, Glaxians, Space Firebirds, Carnival, and of course Pac Man. In the Movie, most of the games were ignored, games that did not happen till later were featured and because they no doubt got lots of money from Nintendo, they made them the Featured Games... and Yes, Donkey Kong was a pattern game, you had to memorize the bouncy springs etc. (yes it was a very hard game.... but still a pattern game). Also, interesting how on the NES version, the capsule power-ups "stack" (i.e., you can get the laser power up after the slow-ball power up and use both simultaneously), but not in the arcade version (the 1-up power capsule took away the extend power). I wonder if this was intentional or unintentional on Taito's part?

    • @zaphod77
      @zaphod77 Рік тому

While slow cancels other powerups, it's an instantaneous change in ball speed, so other powerups can't cancel slow. That's how it is in the arcade too. Slow can even stack with itself.

You can tell which computers the Taito engineers probably had access to. That's why the MSX and NEC versions have the correct music and sound effects. I think they were impressed by the Apple IIgs as well, which is why that port and the sequel are almost identical to the arcade versions. The other computers didn't really have good sound hardware by comparison, as well.

There have been literally hundreds of clones for this game, none of which truly redefined the bat and ball style play like the original Arkanoid did. The only clone that really took the concept to the next level was Shatter, a 2009 indie game by New Zealand developers at Sidhe. Though I may have my facts wrong and I'm sure I get a lot of replies correcting me for what I just said.

Other than some being choppier than I would prefer I don't think any of these ports of Arkanoid are actually too bad. Seems to have been a game that got some TLC from it's conversion programmers. That is except for the far more recent DS version which is, to put it plainly, utterly vile.
Even the Amstrad, which I never cared for as a system seems to have come up with the goods here with a smashing version.

    • @Carnivius_Prime

Thanks about the Amstrad CPC comment. It's nice to hear praise for a game on it fron someone not into the computer itself. And yeah it's a great version. Used to play it loads as a kid (got it in a pack of 20 games on 4 tapes for 99 pence, bargain!) and yes I agree about the DS game. I wonder if it takes some special kind of skill to make a modern version of a game look a million times worse than the almost 30 year old version.

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 10 років тому +1

Carnivac I've never had an easy relationship with the CPC. A couple of friends had them when I was a kid and at the time it seemed to be a continual let down, with "an amstrad version" becoming slang with us for a wretched game port.
More recently though I've had a chance to see the CPC at it's best and although I don't think my youthful opinion of the system's game catalogue was totally wrong, it was certainly unfair. I now feel it got a rotten deal from many of it's game developers who often didn't seem to know nor care how to use the hardware to it's full, and sometimes impressive potential.

Oh look, a bug on the Atari 7800 16:15
So the Mac version allowed powerups to spawn even if you had multiple balls on screen? I thought that wasn't supposed to happen.

Classic game. I love the CPC version (the scrolling text intro with the starfield and great music feels quite dramatic). The DS version is by far the worst. Looks so cheap and nasty like they just didn't care.

Agree the CPC version was excellent there are a lot of C64 people on here saying the C64 version was the best and most of them prob never even played the CPC version fanbois lol

C64/Amiga for the overall arcade feeling. I just picked up a scrap find NES and I'm sad to admit I haven't found a single game I find attractive enough to play on it. Still wondering why NES is so overhyped by today's kids and nobody knows what an Amiga even is.

The Arcade version is the reference ok, so the 16-bits Computers Amiga 500 & Atari St 500 was the best ones of the 1980's & early 1990's with a sligthly favor for the Amiga :)

Viewing this game is only a small part. This game NEEDS analog controls to be really good. So anything without analog (mouse or analog joystick) is automatically dropped a bit. Of those with analog, my favorite is the Amiga version. Great control. Although I preferred MegaBall on the Amiga for the ball/paddle game. ;-)

    My opinions on these:
    1. Arcade: Well, its the arcade, it must be the best.
    2. Apple II: The sound and colours are really bad :/ I think Apple II wasn't graphically capable enough.
    3. Thomson MO5: Looks just unplayable.
    4. Amstrad CPC: Great colours and sound!
    5. ZX Spectrum: While not sounding the best I'd say its my favourite home port. Its simple in a great way and very playable.
    6. BBC Micro: Nice port, but I think the colours and sound are off.
    7. C64: While the sound is stellar I really don't like how tight everything is and C64 colour palette in general.
    8. Atari 800 XE: This is wrong in so many ways.
    9. Atari 7800: Pretty much the definition of a homebrew :/ It could be much better.
    10. MS DOS: The PC Speaker is not doing well here...
    11. MSX: Pretty much the BBC port but with better sound.
    12. PC-8801: Better graphics, worse sound than previous.
    13. TRS-80 Color: Great visuals, nothing to say about the sound.
    14. Macintosh: This game CAN'T look good on B/W screen.
    15. NES: Same as BBC Micro.
    16. Atari ST: Nice visuals, not so good sound.
    17. Amiga: Same as previous, but better.
    18. Apple II GS: Same as previous two, but better ;)
    19. DS: Nope. Far too different from the original. Looks just wrong.

It is an emulator. It's called Desmume. It's not flawless By no means but it's the best I've tried.
