- Johnson Challenger with a shorted capacitor. Made a mess. Tracing down the fault was pretty easy. Just follow the smoke trail! The Challenger was a unique rig. The finals and driver tubes are 6DQ6A's. Sweep tubes normally seen in CB Linear amplifiers. This is a real power house and sounds decent on AM. Just a quick project to show you the damage.

This is so cool. That was my first transmitter.
Hey Terry. I have a piece of equipment that I feel would benefit a lot of people if made into a UA-cam video. It's a AA165 fender bassman mostly to schematic with a few modifications. It was a very ambitious project for a first build, of any kind of electronic. I'm very pleased with the outcome but it has plenty of issues to overcome. Im looking to pay someone to go through it and feel it would benefit a lot of people that are attempting an amp build to see the troubleshooting process which is very different then troubleshooting a vintage amp. It's constructed of new components and potential issues lie beyond failing vintage components.
Awesome Terry! Gave to old unit a new lease on life! Thank you for the education and entertainment! You rock!
Roger that man, Thanks for supporting me. TD
I don't even repair anything and I just tune in to watch
Good job! I got a lot of grief as a tech for just sitting and looking at my repairs for a while. Sometimes eyes and nose are your best troubleshooting tools.
Got ya man. Many times I have to inspect, evaluate, come back later and then, I have a solution!
Terry another ef johnson saved and preserved the classic transmitters... stay safe augie W1LJD
Yes Sir, Thats the business. Keep those Johnsons performing!
Great feedback lol Terry. Thats a good one. Yeah, I have seen this happen before myself.
That DX150B is a good reciever works well with whatever you use it with. At the moment i am using AX190 40 and 80. It doesn't have what the 150b has.
"No flames....that"s a good thing" LOL!
I'm not sure which one I like more... the Challenger or your t-shirt.
They both have battle damage
@@d-labelectronics, don't we all! LOL
4:24 - Did ALL of E. F. Johnson's products feature those CHEAP 'battery-charger-quality' meters?
Nope, The Ranger/Valiant/Viking 2 and others had a decent meter, for some reason they had a few crappy ones on other models
Good ol' Chirpy...!!!
Needs regulation on the screen grid of the Osc.
2:24 - I've NEVER seen a cap of that type, just FRY! I guess it's an RF thing :)
Every component has a life cycle
1:32...there's a black component underneath the r.f. choke that looks burned to me(!)
You are correct, that is a 15 ohm meter shunt resistor
Sangamo, gotta GO!
Those replacing caps cant handle high temps.. A metall clad will last longer. the capacity wil change also a lot under different temperatures..
Cool video... can't you just give the Johnson a little blue pill?
