- Follow up test after repair. This Navigator was in pretty rough shape, lots of mods, but now works very nice. Clean CW note. Attracts contacts. That unique signal draws them in like a school of fish. I had fun operating the rig and of course drinking the wine! These are rare birds. If you find one at a good price, snag it. Not many were produced. They command a hefty sum on the used radio market. I have owned 3 of them. Should have kept 1 in my collection. More to come from the Hammared Ham.

KD6NCR here - I support all "Hammared Ham" operations. Cheers!
I like getting hammered watching you get hammered. Win-win!
Thanks for treating us with another ham video.
Terry, you Have great operating ethics you hear N3FES and come back to him at his same CW proficiency. Appreciate seeing you work on the Johnson rig I'm a fan of classic tube receivers and transmitters. 73
Back in the late 50's I got my Novice ticket. I used to read the Allied radio catalog and literally drool over these rigs. I especially liked the Navigator because it was small and had a built in VFO. I've owned (and sold) many, many rigs since then but the Navigator is still on my 'wanted list'. Joe - K3JLS
I just bought two bottles of red this afternoon. I'm drinkin' along with ya! :)
Xraytonyb you are good at restoring vintage AM FM stereo receivers and vintage amplifiers my friend
well sounds like persistence pays off Terry. You are getting out on that Navigator and that NC300 sounds good too. I remember back in 1967 was with M.A.R.S. out of McClellan AFB with call letters AFA6YJK handling message traffic out of Vietnam all kinds of fun. Even with low power its still possible to work the world a lot of guys have done it so I know its possible.
1:50 - That's about 2 words-per-minute! :) Sounds quite 'wine-compliant' to me! :)
I must admit I too enjoy putting the key is whiskey
Thanks Terry 👍🏻🇬🇧
You are a gentleman. I wish when I was a novice over 50 years ago, that I had run into more kind keys like you. It always seemed to me that folks were insensitive to a slow going newbie. Slowing to match the speed of your contact is the sign of a kind soul. Good to see you operating that beautiful Navigator. I always thought that that color scheme was the sharpest of any unit of the day. This has been a great week with three ham theme DLab uploads. I was rewatching one of your older videos on replacing an expensive $45 filter cap using a tube socket and shrink tubing when this dropped. Have a wonderful New Year.
The National NC-300 & EF Johnson Navigator are a seemingly nice pair up. Nice way to prove out both repairs also. The NC-300 is circa 1953 with the Navigator of 1958.
Which is probably the best example of the later 50`s upgraded to General Class and Novice stations.
What was super about the navigator
was that it covered the 160m band. And was a flagship with the 6146 final. Agreed, it should have sported a Valiant metering. Oh, well it was to keep the costs down and offer something better than a 807.
The Navigator sold for almost 3x a Adventurer @ the time. And like everything better it costs...
Now it's a bit better due to the fact that it is Hammered Ham certified. Wait till the customer gets the bill for all the wine...
Wishing a very happy new year to you and your family sir.
Loved watching work those old tubers....does have a very nice and clean CW tone . Both are truly classic rigs . I enjoy your channel ..73 and God Bless
Very cool ... reminds me of my early days in ham radio as WN0TIU in 1967. Let my license expire in 1987 as Advanced Class WA0TIU..
RRR on the meter!! Built mine from the kit circa1964 still have it. Might try it now! 73 Mike K4QET
Look, I mean great great video as always. Enough can't be said about what you do! So Happy New Year and a healthy 2022 Hammered Ham ... and I still insist that you need some wine or shot glasses with your iconic mug on them like Flannigan's restaurant! 73
Glad you got your Johnson working!
As a noob to electronics, everything is a blur with nothing plugged in. I'm like "SomeOfTheGearNoIdea"... So I have a beer and watch Chris and D-LAB, and the rest of the greats. Safer that way. Cheers!
I don’t have all the gear quite yet but definitely working on it
@@allthegearnoidea6752 Before the plague hit I was working and buying every bit of vintage kit I could get my paws on. All dirt cheap from local classifieds and thrift stores. Glad I did because now, even if I can find it, everything is so expensive it's cheeper to build a time machine and go back and buy it new like Paul Carlson does... if I can get my silly wanker brain to learn more electronics I'll start a channel. Untill then I'll keep watching you and all the rest of the GOATs and drinking beer. What could go wrong? Have a great New Years and keep on truckin!
Great Video. Love this stuff. Happy New Year!
Love your videos, glad you're good at what you do. Such insight
Xraytonyb your utube videos are awesome my friend
Wishing happy new year to you and your family sir.
8:53 - A meter fit for a frickin' battery charger!
8:32 a chirpy signal in a sea of 'clean' signals does attract people! I was trying out antennas on my an/grc 9 and even though i was just sending a bunch of V's, with occasionally a callsign, someone wanted to talk to me :)
D-Lab, rocks.
Aliens: 👁️👄👁️ that's deep
I hope nobody in law enforcement gets the bright idea to cite you with a T.U.I infraction (transmitting under the influence). Happy new year!
Great video...loved it! Only one complaint...what was the mechanical problem that you fixed and how did you fix it?
Issue was mis-alignment of the VFO switch vrs band select position. There was comments/discussion on the last video. The VFO itself has a 3-pos switch underneath that has to toggle with the band switch. It was in the wrong position
Wow, that code is slow enough even for me.
That whole process is greek to me, but I would love to learn more. I need to look into that Terry- that radio is working great - Excellent - Is your dog a D-LAB :P LOL I hear voice on top of your code.. is that normal ? Great video Terry... I learned a bit.... Happy New Year to you and Marcia !!!
Yes, The Canadian stations are allowed voice in the 40meter CW portion of the band. I believe you would love Ham radio. Check into it.
on a waterfall you can see the tube "hook"
So I'm enjoying this again and realized you haven't answered the most important question! What wine goes best with a Johnson Navigator?
Cool video! A few years back I was blessed with aquiring an NC 300 in great shape for next to nothing. And being the novice fool I unwisely plugged it in and powered it up. Luckily nothing bad (that I know of) happened and it seemed to receive great. I then wisely shut her down and decided to put it away until I can learn what I'm doing and do it the right way. Still learning and gathering equipment. But I was curious as to what type or stuff I'll be able to receive with the 2 meter "accessory box?" That came with it, once I replace any bad/dodgy parts and get it running properly. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Also, the 300 looks like it goes great with a fine wine... Cheers Terry!
I can also here it
Reminds me of my early days on CW with a DX -100 about 1967....... My cw is rough........ is your call N6TLA?
N6TLU ? I am rusty ????
My CW is rusty, not as fast I once was.
Sooo, what was the mechanical problem with the Navigator??? Nice fist Terry! 73 - Dino KLØS
See comment under Wayne's question, same answer
@@d-labelectronics Sorry I missed the answer below, glad you found it and the owner is going to be very pleased! HNY Terry!
Ahh .R Mondavey..ok

Too hammered to spell right? I don't get it
Maybe it's a take on Hammarlund Radios.
