  • Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the wallet, out comes PNSO with another dinosaur: Sauropelta, one of the most well-preserved nodosaurs we have! And as expected from PNSO, this is detailed, intricately sculpted, and wonderfully proportioned. It’s a beauty and it’s GOOD.
    But… HOW good? Good enough to dethrone the Wild Safari Sauropelta?
    In this video we’re going to look at this wonderful model, and perhaps, you can decide how well it measures up.
    Spoiler alert:
    Get BOTH!

    I'm not an expert on ankylosaurus, but I noticed the difference in the orientation of the shoulder spikes on the two models (saffari-PNSO) and I was surprised you did not mention it. So which is the right restoration after all? Spikes up or down? Thank you in advance

      The position of spikes and other osteoderms will always be somewhat speculative as these are hardly ever preserved _in situ_ , treasures like Borealopelta excepted. In fact Carpenter in his 1984 skeletal reconstruction on featured a single pair of spikes, and only in his 1998 paper revised it to the double row we usually follow today.
      Therefore only best guesses that are reasonable can be effected. After a while they become the accepted norm, and often taken so granted that different still reasonable reconstructions might be jarring. A good example is Tuojiangosaurus. Almost always reconstructed with parascapular spines like Kentrosaurus, in fact that feature is only speculative for Tuojinasoaurus.
      So I didn't think to mention it.
      As a matter of interest, way back then I was not covering the science part so much as there was something going on and I didn't have the time even though it's something I'd always wanted to do. I probably would talk about this if I were to redo this review today 😁

    As someone with a huge amount of love and nostalgia for Sauropelta this is a must buy for me. Part of me does wish it was a little larger but overall I do love it a lot. It’s nice to get another Sauropelta figure too

      I'm guessing from what you say that you MUST have the Wild Safari Sauropelta. Indeed, it would have been nice to have it bigger, but it will complement your Wild Safari wonderfully. I believe Wild Safari really hit a quality near perfection with their Sauropelta!

    From what I heard, pnso will reveal figures every week until February 2021

    I’m going to sound like a broken record here, but thanks for another fantastic video. Loved the comparison to the Wild Safari version. I’m sure I’m not the only collector who is interested in which models are most accurate based on current understanding of the animals.

      Thanks Michael I'm absolutely delighted to hear it! When I decided I wanted to do it this way, I knew there was a possiblity I would be the only one watching them 🤣 But I really love dinosaurs, dragons and these models and I hope that my videos will not only share some knowledge, that will make people appreciate their models perhaps more. The only thing is, I'm self-learning so I gotta be careful I don't make major mistakes!
      The Wild Safari Sauropelta is truly a beauty and except for the arch, still a perfect model for me and one of my absolute favourites. The fact it stands its own against modern toy quality and against PNSO says it all. I hope they will get back to form soon as I have a sentimenal attachment to Safari, given how they started me off years ago with the Carnegie Collection dinosaurs.

    This year pnso wants my entire wallet, damn it. By the way, where do you get these models? Do you get them on Amazon or AliExpress?

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому +1

      You have heard the rumour that they intend to release one every week till Feb?
      I get my models from a contact in China directly, but I recommend most people get them from Amazon instead.
      I'll explain more in a video I might do next year, but briefly, the quality of those will likely be more consistent, even slightly better, and PNSO now seems to be doing a worldwide release, meaning you'll probably get them just a few weeks later. This isn't like with Transformers, where reviewers with their own sources can get them months ahead.

    Saw some in hand images of the new ceratopsians, they really differ from the stock photos.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому +2

      Ah.... I was hoping the ceratopsians would at least hold up, the way Pachyrhinosaurus has. It's inevitable that production models won't be the same quality as prototype images, but when the gap is too large it gets disappointing.

    What’s with the different spike positions ??

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  9 місяців тому +1

      As far as I know, there have been on in situ specimens preserved, so spike position on armoured dinosaurs will always be speculative. If we consider the possibility of spikes as defence, the more traditional placement makes sense. But if we give credence to some current speculation that the armour is only for intraspecial combat, then the more lateral placement agrees with that.

      That always was a red flag to me before I got this guy… I ended up pulling the trigger on him either way because I feel this figure is so… cute… a oldie but a goodie

    I do love both the sauropelta and borealopelta from pnso, but as i collect by scale (1/35 to 1/40 ish ..) i'm always concerned about the size of the models. Can these be at around 1/35? I mean, even if in lenght they are around that, aren't they too tall at the hip? They should be around two meters tall in real life, and i don't think that was the case. Would these two be around 1/35 and i would buy them right now, but i don't know... Would love if someone could shed a light on that.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому

      Antonio, by my estimation, the Borealopelta is about 1:31 scale, and the Sauropelta is 1:36. However I could easily be off as I'm measuring using string and perhaps someone better at it can come up with more accurate numbers.
      For the longest time I refused to buy anything unless it was 1:40, but realised that manufacturers were moving away from that as a standard. CollectA Deluxe still claims 1:40 (1:20 for Prehistoric mammals), though it's obvious, especially recently, they haven't respected their scales. I have also measured some of my old Carnegies and realised that the scales aren't always as claimed.
      Ultimately, I realised that even if something was off by a little, say one model was 1:40, another was 1:38, because the multiplication factor, the sizes are really too disparate to claim to stand well toghether anyway. So while my favourite is still 1:40 and 1:35, anything in between, or even if it's out, if the sculpt and paintwork is amazing, I'll get it.
      I suggest you might want to get the Sauropelta, which still should be close to your preferred scales. And if you like it very much, you'll most likely be tempted to get the Borealopelta too!

    Like you, the Sauropelta from SAFARI also has prominent place in my collection. My one disappointment being the uniform paint scheme which could have benefited greatly with a dark wash to truly accentuate the meticulously sculpted osteoderms, and after much musing on the figure I’m deciding to have the figure repainted. The future paint scheme will incorporate the evidence of counter-shading. It will pair nicely with the PNSO figure when completed. Splendid review.

      Thank you for your kind words!
      The Safari is truly a work of art, but I can see what you mean about a darker wash elevating it even higher up. I think that texture makes a lot of difference, because with certain lighting shadows cast their own shade thereby lending visual interest and variation in colour that are almost illusive.
      That's more the case with the CollectA Borealopelta than the Safari Sauropelta, but because of how my lighting falls on this I didn't quite notice the uniformity in colour.
      You will definitely enjoy both of them inyour collection, they are just amazing to have together!
