128: PNSO Stegosaurus (Biber and Rook) 2021 Review

- Finally! After two years, PNSO brings us not just a revision of its 2019 Biber, but in the Museum Line, and a little baby, Rook!
The care and science that went into creating this beauty has to be seen and held to be believed. There is just no better way than up close to appreciate this work of art. This Stegosaurus has all the proportions I’ve wanted for the longest time, marrying the extremes of a Sophie scaleup and the reconstructions of old.
Incorporating the latest science and lessons learnt from Sophie, (and scaling perfectly well with the PNSO Allosaurus as a bonus) this might very well be the favourite of many Stegosauruses for a long time to come.

Thank you, I'm happy people like my format. I have learnt more these last few years and the more I learn, the more I want to share that, and hopefully people will enjoy their models and appreciate these artists more!
Just got mine this past Christmas and as I usually do when I get a pnso I take a trip down memory lane and rewatch the review that convinced me to get it in the first place, I have mine parked with the saurophaganax and what a display these make, especially with the baby acting as a treat for the sauro
I'm delighted that you were more pleased than enraged after getting the actual model 😁 Those two are going to make an amazing display for sure! The mother looks like it's reacting to a threat to the baby and I would say that diorama would look very real!
I just wish pnso wasnt so expensive. Most of the figures (due to their size and lack of any base/articulation) shouldnt be any over £20, with the exception of a few such as the trex which should be around £35-40. But instead they are mostly £30 for the normal ones and the rex is £50+. Makes it impossible for me to collect them cause I know that if I get a few of them I'll become addicted and end up spending hundreds. Plus each few new releases the price just goes up. When they started their, I suppose I could say, dino figure marathon they came out at about £20, then after a few releases they became £25, then £30 and have luckily stopped increasing for now. They are starting to "do a rebor"
I understand it can be frustrating to see prices going up. I feel it's a chicken-egg things. They became popular because of quality, driving up demand. This possibly enabled them to continually innovate with better paint apps and quality of sculpting, which again drives up prices. I would say that given their quality, the pricing is expected, because you just can't compare what they produce now with what they produced back two or even one year ago.
On the collecting bug, I'm not sure how long you've been collecting, but personally, I wish I was a lot more selective about what I bought. It's been a challenge to develop this selectivity compared to just adopting it from the start, and I'm now no longer a completist, as you might be able to tell from my selection of reviews. PNSO does make it harder, because they are so damn good at what they do.
Your joy in observing and presenting these models is infectious! Another heartfelt and jubilant review! I just recently procured the wonderful Rebor Woodland Stegosaurus (although it seems there is a dorsal plate with either some paint scratched off or splattered with white paint which is unfortunate and irritating)and am hoping to add this one to the herd. I am not seeing anywhere to buy the Allosaurus as of yet. Hope that changes soon. Thanks again for another excellent video!

Don't know where you're located, but if you're in the US, Dans Dinosaurs is where most people go, and if you're nearer UK, then Everything Dinosaur might be a good bet. The last place to go would be EBay, but many of them are scalpers selling for exorbitant prices.
Great review! This is by far the best stegosaurus model in my opinion, i love the plates with the orange in the middle and black on the top, I actually love the dark green on the stegosaurus because i always picture in my mind that stegosaurus as they grow older they turn darker, and thats a reason why i love the baby stegosaurus
@Paleostories_ In that case this set is perfect for you! I find it really cool that every colour scheme appeals to different people. I always feel that companies have a very tough time because what one person likes another will dislike. So I'm happy for you, and happy for PNSO that it's got a fan in you! Truly an excellent model this one! The baby is also fantastic too!
Since you are so well informed.. is there reason to believe that adult animals were caring for the babies?

I believe there has been evidence in some sauropods and hadrosaurs based on footprints, but for Stegosaurus specifically, there isn't. I also asked Dr Maidment this, and she confirmed that there has been no evidence specific to Stegosaurus.

How come we did not know for so long the width of the stegosaurus pelvis? Hadn't we found a single pelvic girdle all these centuries? All stegosaurus had such wide hips?
I just love the way you display the different models at the end of the video. Its allow viewer to compare the differences between models i.e. coloration and its pose.

Any review that can compare dinosaur plates against potato chips gets my stamp of approval! What a great and detailed review! Can't get these here yet in Oz, but going by Wilson it will be very dear (Museum Line!). I might still look at the original Biber that I don't think is too bad.
Any comment that picks up on little details in my reviews gets my stamp of gratitutde!
I am not sure if getting these from UK (Everythingdinosaurs) would be better for Australians, or if you could get some better deals from Aliexpress.
I used to dislike the original, but now that I've accepted the possibility of the hip structure I like it a lot more! Colour wise it's more vivid and I love what they did with the thagomizer. The only thing I would change if I had the skill was to blend in the thick black on the plates to achieve a more gradual transition. I don't think you could go wrong on either. The only thing is if you get a later run Biber v1 and the paint apps are worse, a common occurence for later run figures.
The other part of the point of the plates, in my mind, is not simply defense or as a mating display but to increase the side profile of the animal to make it appear larger and more intimidating to a predator. This is something we do see in nature - animals are always puffing themselves up to look bigger and it would not be in the least surprising if that was a purpose - at least one of several - of the plates. And yes, thin or not, they'd provide SOME barrier to a bite from above - in this case, that bite would be coming from a large theropod - namely, Torvosaurus or Allosaurus. Everything ABOUT Stegosaurus was built for defense - the throat was armored - and you don't develop an armored throat unless there are things going after your neck constantly - the plates along the neck, then, provide a barrier along the top of the neck, making it a lot harder to get in there and bite down on the neck itself. You'd have the plates stabbing the roof of your mouth while the teeth of the lower jaw bit into armor, and that's assuming the thagomizers don't get you.
One thought I've had about the plates: they're often depicted as being smooth in profile, with regular edges, maybe because it's more aesthetically pleasing - but the reality is we have no reason to think the outer layer that wasn't fossilized WOULD be so smooth. Could have been a lot more sharp and jagged than that, which would give Stegosaurus a much more nasty appearance - almost like Godzilla's plates - and here's the other thing: if the sheath material over the plates grows back at a given rate, then some superficial damage isn't a huge deal if the animal survives - it can always grow it out again. This is all supposition of course.
The increase in profile is one that I have seen and make plenty of sense to me. I only need observe my angry cat's behaviour to realise just how much an apparent change in profile makes to perceived size and threat.
Regarding the smoothness of the plates, I believe that it's due to convention coming from traditional depiction of smooth keratin over bone. A supporting inference might be because of the 2010 Christiansen and Tschopp paper on Hesperosaurus suggesting a rather smooth outline. There may be others that I can't think of right now.
That's why I particularly like the plates sported by the Sideshow and the Rebor. While still smooth in the edges, the cragginess of these structures are a clear idea that overlying keratin could look a lot rougher than previously assumed. Not to mention makes for much more interesting texturing on models too!

The word "finest" is apt here. You have to really hold this in hand to see how exquisite that detail is! Especially on the baby, it's even smaller than the Figure Builder miniatures, and yet being able to get so much on there. It's an accomplishment! Not forgetting of course the usual scientific rigour that goes into these.
One issue I have with PNSO is just with the seams in the plastic that are very visible in some places - I get that they have to make them in pieces and fit them together but I can't help but feel that with the level of quality they're shooting for, filing down or smoothing out that seam line would be something they'd think of. Just a minor thing. The other thing is just....I think 1:35 scale is ok, but I'd love if they could offer a 1:20 scale for those of us who want a bigger model. I think 1:20 sale is the biggest you could really get without some of the bigger dinosaurs coming out - even in 1/20th scale - absolutely insanely huge. Some exceeded 30 meters in length (around 100 feet) so 1:20 scale there would be about 5 feet or about 1.5 meters. Pretty big for a model of a sauropod BUT you could keep the 1:35 scale and still offer the massive 1:20 scale line which could fit in even MORE detail that you simply can't fit into a 1:35 scale model. Now, at that scale I think the MATERIALS used to make them might have to change due to the weight of such a large model (if a sauropod is 5 feet long and made of PVC I'm thinking there'd be significant sagging over time due to its own weight), but just a thought.
The OTHER possibility is to go a BIT smaller but not too much - 1:25 scale would still be decently big for a model and at THAT scale, something like a 100' sauropod comes out at 4' or not much over a meter long. Then a T. Rex - if we assume 13 meters or about 42' - that comes out to about 20.5 inches long or around the half meter mark. Pretty decently big, but not TOO big like some of the Jurassic World figures which are OVER a meter long for just the T. Rex which would make a sauropod at that scale truly massive. ANYway, I just feel, personally, that 1:35 scale is sometimes a bit TOO small. The 1:20 to 1:25 scale range would just work a lot better especially for smaller taxa, while not being too massive to the point where it's comical. Might be too big for the very longest of sauropods (some estimates for Barosaurus range up over the 150' mark, and while that's not at all something easily substantiable and depends on a lot of assumed variables, IF true and some of the longest sauropods COULD reach lengths exceeding 150', then a 1:20 scale of that would be actually comically big - at least 7.5' or close to 2.5 meters long, so about the length of a person's dining room table) BUT then again if we assume lengths that extreme...1:35 scale is also too big for most people because that would STILL be over 4 feet long.
The seams issue has been a nagging complaint, and it’s more of an eyesore in fauna that are smooth-bodied animals like the marine animals, where a seam sticks out like a sore thumb. What rubs it in is that you will see that some parts of the seams are for want of a better word, _seamless_ . And that suggests that with improved processes or quality control, it might be possible to reduce their visibility if not their presence. But that would increase cost.
I was disappointed that Mamenchisaurus was only 1:45, which they also used for their larger marine reptiles. But I recall reading that one consideration was to make it affordable to children.
That’s really the challenge why we can’t have a lot of what we want. The cost. Not just of production, but to Western clients, shipping as well. And there are not a lot of people with both the space and the money to afford a 1:20 sauropod model. I have worked countless extra hours to help pay for my models, especially repaints, but while money can be earned, space is usually permanently fixed. I remember when the BOTM Ceratopsians line was still in early days, some were complaining they weren’t in the 1:6 scale of the raptors. But to have them at 1:6 and buying a handful would result in most people needing a new house.
What I think might be a good idea is as you say, for something really popular, offer two versions. One 1:35, another larger for more discerning collectors. In fact GR Toys did just that, offering both the normal Carcharodontosaurus we know and love, but also a more expensive 1:20 resin kit. I would love for them to do large sauropods in hollow vinyl like they did with Huanghetitan, large and yet light, and would gladly accept the seams.
Consistency in scale across all genera would be near impossible. Carnegie tried, and the resulting Protoceratops and original Deinonychus speak for themselves. I showed this in my recent Safari collection video with the Coelophysis, rendered in beautiful detail you couldn’t have in 1:35.
So I think the best compromise is to have perhaps 2 to 3 set scales, with the larger 1:20 ones for the small dinosaurs, or more premium specials. The rest can go with 1:35 for most dinosaurs and 1:45 for the larger ones. The key is having some _consistency_ !

You will not be unhappy making your Rebor your main Stegosaurus, of that I can be certain! Just look at those plates; it's the closest to having a Sideshow. The detail, while not as fine, is of very good quality and they even sculpted in extras like those forearm scutes. The colouration is also a winner for many people, and don't forget also that the Rebor and adult baby have bases, which can really enhance good quality models so effectively.

I do. Love this PNSO - I'd have bought it if it was as large as Garden and had a stand. But like you I'm happy with my Rebor. I do want that Toujiangosaurus now though.

I can really see the difference that PNSO had made with their dinosaurs and it is seen with the better detailed more accurately scaled scales (no pun intended) and better paint application, but because of this I am a bit wary of buying their older figures like the Tyrannosaurus rex because I want it to not be outdated by their new one as soon as I buy it so if they make the scales of their new Tyrannosaurus more like their sitting version or the Zhuchengtyrannus that is in a walking pose then I will buy it. (and yes I'm thinking of getting the latest Stegosaurus because of its improved accuracy and scaling )
I have no doubt that PNSO will eventually release a new Wilson with the new scale detail, and hopefully with a few other upgrades as well! That said, both the current Wilson and th Rebor Kiss/Rusk models are, I would say, milestones as far as T Rex models go.
This Stegosaurus I still have mixed feelings about. It's just too dark for my liking. Come to think of it, I may just have to do something about that 😁
Excellent review. Everything is spot on. I'm sure that in later videos you have toned down the music, which is the only negative. It drove me kind of batty. And thank you for always comparing your review object with other dinosaurs. Very very helpful.

This definitely would be my current recommendation for having a balance of everything. Sideshow Stegosaurus was amazing, but this is a mass produced model that has the same good qualities at a much smaller scale and price. I still love my Rebor, especially those plates, but this PNSO really pulls head on so many other areas.
Imo best Stegosaurus figure! Also I personally really like the dark color. If only it was slightly bigger Id be more happier. The baby is absolutely adorable tho :D

old stegosaurus is very good too, its proportions and general sculpt still hold up well to modern stegosaurus information we have the only thing is the details that are not so good but its old so i can overlook that, its awesome though how it can fit as a subadult it really fits as a transitional stage between adult and baby
Haha, well actually this one looking at it now, I see its virtues, but I think that it really is too dull coloured for a good Stegosaurus. So mine has gone for repainting! 😁
Thanks for another informative and entertaining review! I’m really torn here. I already have the Rebor and the older Biber (and always come close to buying the Sideshow whenever one pops up on EBay), but I have so little space for more figures. Perhaps I’ll wait for my PNSO Allosaurus to arrive before deciding. Ugh!
I think I understand! I don't opine in my reviews if I can help it, but I would suggest that unless you are really hung up on scientific accuracy and updated proportions, then the Rebor is surprisingly going to be delightful enough for many. The colour, the texture of the plates, and the detail (though not as fine as PNSO's) is actually a very good balance. If I didn't get this PNSO, it would still be my favourite Stegosaurus (except the Sideshow of course).
Just keep in mind that sad state that future runs are likey to have poorer paint applications!

I'm afraid not. I generally only buy more scientifically accurate models, and as good as Nanmu Studio is, it focusses on dinosaurs with a Jurassic Parkesque aesthetic, which I do admire but am not a fan of owning. I got the Allosaurus and the Shunosaurus because they were fairly accurate, and the Allosaurus is just too good to pass up!

Awesome video ! Would recommend getting this figure or the Safari Stegosaurus 2019 for scientific accuracy?
If you favour the Sophie interpretation, then I think the Safari will be closer to that famous skeletal mount. But if you would like something in between, then I think this PNSO is a bit closer for people who still love the original idea (such as myself). 🙂

Yours is the third review I’ve seen and in all three the plates are warped , I don’t know if this is intentional or the design aesthetic . Personally , I prefer the smaller version but will have the figure repainted to resemble REBOR’s mountain variant Stegosaurus , which I find the paint scheme a most welcomed change of pace .
Definitely unintentional. I forgot to mention it, but it's just the way these are packed. I have to use the hot water treatment for it. The actual fossils make that clear that these were straight, not curved.
@@DinosDragons Yeah I found in mine that there are slits in the foam for the larger plates but it's pretty hard to slide those plates into the slots. Especially by feel so I can understand that during packing the packer wouldn't want to waste time trying to fit the plates into each slot for every stegosaur. Especially on a busy day.
Between PNSO and REBOR who have the most accurate stegosaurus?
If you believe that Sophie NHMUK PV R36730 specimen is the true complete form of Stegosaurus, then the PNSO is a little closer to that.
If you're still not convinced and prefer an older interpretation of proportions, then the Rebor is it.
i actually welcome the darker shade on this model. it refreshing to see a different tone applied on a pnso model honestly the paints on their models are way too similar its getting boring. Anyway great model and a great review although i think the safari ltd stego proportions are more accurate and most updated. But the paint on that model leave much to be desired i must admit. Wish pnso had done this in those proportions, but overall still a great model!
I'm glad you prefer the darker paint apps on this. That's the thing, colouration is so subjective that you can't please everybody, which is why some companies hedge their bets by offering different variants.
Right now, the Safari Ltd version is definitely the closest to Sophie's proportions as far as I know, and you won't go far wrong with that. I actually quite like the paint applications on that, the only thing I don't like strangely enough is the extremely blunted thagomizer, which I don't have the skill to do anything about. But to be fair, they have to make it safe for children. I love the beautiful eyes on that one too!

I absolutely love the Safari! Especially those beautiful eyes. In terms of colour, the general scheme seems to be almost the same, as you can see from the colouration, though a lot more cheerful in the Safari. But yes, little Rook is CUTE! 😍

this pnso stego is expensive. .. it is nice, but i held back after checking the price. If you compare it with rebor stego, then rebor can be justified.
I tend to agree. If you already like the Rebor, and don't really need the revised posture, then that should make you happy. It has a brighter colour scheme and the plates are incredibly textured!

The high price doesn't make sense for such a small miniature.
Indeed it's smaller than many people would hope for, and I was surprised when I opened up the box and saw it. Still, the quality certainly outshines many other cheaper models, and that is perhaps what the price goes towards as well.

Yeah I know cost is a big issue for many people. But I think it was inevitable... with rising costs, not to mention quality. Add the shipping and it can be a real killer!
