1:57 "Let's get our wood out here" Whoa, slow down there turbo.
I just hope Collin will not stop hosting because of this video. He seems a really nice and friendly guy!
From the pdf : "IMPORTANT! Do not over tighten this screw. The leg joints should move freely to prevent excess friction which could cause the servos to fail.". Also there is precise instruction on how to position servos because most servos don't have a real 180 deg ( bet those "garbage" have 150 deg max ). And if you mess with that it gonna overload them and broke them. Those tiny "garbage" servos are super fragile, even if metal gear box.
Probably needs non rechargeable batteries as they have a slightly higher voltage, 4 disposables would be 6v, 4 rechargeable is only 4.8v.
Let’s ask Elon Musk, he’s got a few lying around 😂 “Today’s project is brought to you by Tesla”

Great job! Next time, have a bit more time to do the vid so you can fix everything :) I like this presenter.

Definitely need a follow up! Get Anthony involved with the code side!!
That was wholly unsatisfying. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

UGG? Watched video to end and no payoff.. I really wanted to see this walk.
I don't think Linus screened this one, there is no way he would let this crap out on one of his channels.
didn't age well
Maybe try using normal batteries not rechargeble ones. Rechargeable have often a lower operating voltage.
Yeah, lol. I was gonna say...I did this a few summers ago with my son before he started kindergarten. It took me all day long to do the damn thing. (And we had a bad part so had to keep troubleshooting with the company and swapping out different parts until we figured out the problem.). I think it took me 8-12 hours to assemble. I know it was my first go around, but still. 1 hour?! Nah
Please upload the end where he fixes it. I really enjoyed this video bet sad to not have a conclusion
impatience definitely ended up crippling a good video
dont use rechargeable batteries they are only 1.2V but standard non-rechargeable are 1.5V witch would give you 6V instead of 5V
more kiiits!
damn this looks like my college projects, it made me miss those days
Ditch those 1.2v rechargeables and put in 1.5v AAs. You need more chooch
Colin has bright blue eyes.
you need more power to run those 9g servo motors
Have you though that rechargeable AAA batteries are rated 1,2V when charged and normal AAA batteries are 1,5V when new? You need 5 recargable AAA batteries to equal the voltage of the 4 normal AAA batteries that it requires!! 🤦🏻♂️
He got lost in his own eyes, that's why he wasn't able to follow the instructions

This was a letdown. You can't just leave it at the end without it even working 🤦🏼♂️ I'm trying to see that lil thing in action 🧐
i wish i read comments before watching lol
If your going to show a robot build, show the damn troubleshooting and get it working, or your just us, watching ourselves getting it wrong at home.
@ShortCircuit, Thank you for posting a build video of our mePed robot! At the end, when the mePed is twitching, it's going into a brown-out state because the voltage drops too low and the Arduino resets. I use Duracell 2500mAh rechargeable batteries and have had great results. They typically lasted around 2-3 hours per charge when I was doing Maker Faires. Also, tightening the leg joint screws too much will make the leg joints bind and it'll draw extra power from the batteries, causing brown-outs as well.
Shortcircuit needs to pin this comment.
It was indeed one of his theories aside from the servo being too tight one. We just didn't get around to trying out other batteries. It makes total sense to me too from experience.
It really bums me out that he didn’t follow the instructions and made a fantastic product look bad.
@@captainzero1 It's all good. I really appreciate him doing a build video though! If you read through most of the comments, most people caught the fact that he probably tightened the leg screws too tight which caused things to bind up and draw too much power!
Hey, that's a cute little thing, I would add to instructions to use some candle wax on joints to reduce resistance from friction. Also some rubber bands in proper places could help servos to move legs. Btw. is it possible to mod power supply to use li-ion cells?
“Don’t tighten the servos”, tightens servos - device can’t function under load...🤔
Idk he seems arrogant
LTT has always been a big believer in "do as I say, not as I do".
@@amunak_ For the most part, but even Linus reads the instructions and attempts to do it right.
@@iamaduckquack probably just needed to be a little more familiar with the project before starting.
@Anna What LTT videos are you watching? Linus never seems prepared and seems to hate manuals
"It says not to tighten, but i'm doing it regardless. If a servo fails, well that's my fault"
Servos are stuck. Well who's fault is that?
"I tried real hard. I wish it worked better straight out of the box"
WHAT.
the reason behind a kit is to thinker. not ready and go. and following instructions is the way to get finished in a good manner.
It infuriates me that he didn’t follow the instructions and then made the product look bad. Bad look.
It was a problem with the batteries. Not enough voltage.
@@Zain-tr2vo Unlikely. He got a set of Eneloop clones straight off a charger, and i mean in the first few minutes, they deliver spicy voltage, around 1.4V. Even at their nominal 1.2V, they are absolutely amazing at driving motors, since they can deliver oodles of current, unlike Alkaline batteries, without almost any voltage sag whatsoever. There would be easily more than 4.7V on the servos, which is usually more than good enough.
1.5V alkaline batteries aren't really 1.5V. They start off at 1.55V but discharge linearly down to 0.9V, so their voltage is actually higher than NiMH only for the half of their life, and only when they're not loaded down by processors and motors, because they don't really like these kinds of loads at all. So you don't get much life out of them before they start going worse than decent quality NiMH. It would be a grave engineering mistake if a motor device would require alkaline and not work off NiMH.
The only actually amazing alternative are primary lithium cells, but they're sooo much more expensive.
Siana Gearz yeah you’re probably right
So we're just gonna give up? Just like that? Disappoint.
He probably ran out of time budget. I don't think they make as much of these ShortCircuit videos.
@@ISpieleUndMehrDE At least bring it home and do some troubleshooting before releasing the video. Do some B roll or something
bruh he built it and tried his best
"If you want to you know, teach a kid to follow instructions.."
Doesn't follow instructions, robo doesn't work.
And proceeds to blame the guy who made it for not working out of the box.
If something is a standard, and instructions say to not do the standard, it's worth following.
@@MrCODEmaster00 ...what I thought at that moment. Why else would the tell you NOT to tighten the screws.
Unrelated. Working as expected. #wontfix LoL
To give him the benefit of doubt, I'm guessing he misread the instructions. It says "Do not over tighten this screw". It's because it's part of the leg joint and if you over tighten it, the leg will bind and the servo won't be strong enough to move the joint.
@@SpierceTech There's no benefit of the doubt...he didn't misread anything, he said "it says don't tighten these, which I don't believe".
He clearly read and understood the instructions, just decided that it was better to not follow them.
wtf you just give up? might as well just not build it man dissapointed :(
Don't forget this isn't even a secondary channel it's technically after techlinked so they don't have as much time to pour into it, I expect he had a few hours allowed for the video before having to work on something more important
I agree with this comment
@@zake881
Hello fellow disappointeds.
For some context, He spent two hours putting it together which is about twice the time we allot for monitored tri-cam shoots of SC, it was also EOD and he was out for an extended long weekend the next day. We were pretty happy with the outcome but we recognize there are some things to learn from this production.
So I have to say I'm not sure why the response is so aggro -- but in the edit, I didn't want us to focus on the fact that this took twice the estimated amount of time it says it should take (2hrs rather than 1) so I didn't integrate a timer of any kind in here, just a single reference to the time, this would have likely shifted the whole perspective but it's only a guess at this point.
You can probably expect closure through a community post. Colin guessed that it was either servo tightening (a narrative I kinda built-up in the edit) or the battery type not providing enough voltage (not actually kept in) which are both logical possibilities that don't fault the product. Also, he didn't so much give up as we didn't have more time to put into this shoot and his conclusion was fairly sensible in the circumstances: he's disappointed that it didn't work but all the same he says it might just take a bit of tinkering and calls it worth it.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
Edit: For those of you who haven't been watching from the get-go:
ShortCircuit is mainly an unboxing/first experience/hands-on channel [where we also happen to look at things we otherwise might not on the main channel]. Not a full-blown review channel. That's the main distinction between Linus Tech Tips content and the channel you're on right now. In that respect, the video has met the criteria, but that doesn't mean we haven't learned anything from this shoot or your collective response. We have and we'll adjust for sure.
@@AlexPotvin Might be best pinning this explanation to save the other comments
@@AlexPotvin Thanks for the details, Aprime. It really did not bother me that much, but can it make a short cameo walking on a different shortcircuit? to maybe slightly appease other people????
Did Linus actually sign off on this?
I don't understand this, there is no way he would have given the green light for this if he watched this video before upload...
Dont think they need green light for shortcircuit
@@davidbujold9763 They do, one of the requirements is that its something, you guessed it, short.
But yeah I think they skipped a litle with quality controle.
probably not rbh
Come on man it literally said to not over tighten joints that the servo moves ....
Dude wtf? Did you seriously just leave it like after that whole video?
So he didn't follow the instructions, tightened the screws against the engineers instructions making it not function...and he gives up? Interesting
They made that 1 hour build into a 11 minute video. What's a few more minutes to tweak it and present it to the audience? Maybe it is a 1 hour build for avid builders, and this is his first time. For instance, not everyone can build a pc in less than 10 minutes; first timers may take thrice as long or more. That's no excuse to give up after a while and quit on the audience.
@@notavailable637 While that could be a valid excuse, in this instance he noted that yes it did take more than an hour to build, but he also states he took some liberties with the instructions since he wasn't sure what to do, which ultimately (might have) caused it to malfunction, then immediately gave up. If it is a time constraint, wait until there is an acceptable finished product to present to the audience instead of some raw dough that was beaten together in 11 minutes.
@@drteletubby I agree, shame, I'm certain this was someone's pet project and to have to release it unfinished, I mean just think of the time it took to edit a 1 hr+ video down to 11 minutes. Personally as someone in an adjacently creative position, I know I wouldn't want it to leave the front door with an ending like that.
@@hasnihossainsami8375 Two+ hour build. It went over EOD.
@@hasnihossainsami8375 It's not just him, there's a camera operator etc.. puts pressure on to wrap things up
I get that this is a secondary channel and that they probably have more important projects going on but they could have at least tried to figure out what the problem was before uploading, it seems like a rushed video.
The most disappointing video ever seen from Linus Media Group
Well that was fantastically unsatisfying.
Indeed, I find this thoroughly underwhelming and every time he makes eye contact with the camera... I swear for a μ second its like staring into a future Dahmer in the making. Anything slower than 144mhz is imperceptible or requires substantial rgb lighting and moderate oc'n.
when it says don't do a thing, why did you do the thing anyway?
what did I just watch for 11 minutes
a person who believed that the 1 hrs of build time was actually true
that was very disappointing
This wasnt even worth editing and uploading for this disappointment
I think this is the first LTT video I've ever stopped watching half way.
I wish I was you. The end had me so mad the only way I could redeem myself is to vow to stop watching any video of I ever see this guy in it so I can save potential hours of my future, and also my sanity.
You didn't miss much. He even fails to get it working and quits.
"Wish it worked out of the box."
You also said this would be a fun project to do with kids, teach them instructions... Then you don't do as instructions say and blame the engineering?
If the standard thing to do is X, the engineer/maker, etc wouldn't say "do X" since doing X is standard BUT if the maker/engineer/etc. say NOT TO do X, than it should be noted.
ok....
I know this ShortCircut, and u have limited time to work on a project - but this material does not stand in line with the quality u always give us. I know what u are trying to say in the video but ... u should give more commentary, or just not publish such non decisive material - no conclusion - u are not doing good for the maker of the product , or for yourself. I think this is first time i give a down vote on linus media group :(. Colin - i know u are still pretty fresh in front of camera. More emotions, more courage ? I feel like u still feel a bit uncomfortable. I hope u will get better, because i really like your work.
EDIT : Becouse i love u guys, i just hold back on my thumb down - i will leave it just without an opinion, i think that is more fair. Cheers.

Never said a child could do it. You could do it with a child he said.
The product is nice, and ShortCircuit videos on such subjects (robotics etc.) are great. But the execution of this one is awful
Does Colin even want to be on camera? Every time I see him it's like watching a student read their essay in front of the class. I'm sure he's passionate and capable, but he's by far the worst at showing it out of all of the hosts I've seen from LMG. Maybe he's just better suited for behind the scenes.
Alex is still really awkward
Can we get an update on this through Twitter or something

Hey man! I am sorry for this feedback, but you don't seem ready yet to be in front of the camera like this yet. I miss some enthusiasm and actually doing things properly and positively. Sorry.
Linus Media Group, Please limit your on air personalities to people who are competent.
You can even see the Arduino resetting when it tries to move the servos under Load... BUT thats a part of the learning process...
The biggest problem with this type of robots is that the inverse kinematics of the movement is complex, add a lack of pressure sensors and a modern control system and you get a robot that basically flails its extremities around hoping it's making contact with a surface at the right moment.
If this is a walker I guess a laundry machine on full load can also be considered a walker.

What. The. Fuck. Why would you not fix it and make it work properly? You just give up and end the video?! That was such a tease. 😡
Time is money friend. No time to do it right, views anyway. Good enough.
If you are using rechargeable batteries, then voltage might be too low
Or... He didn't follow directions and tightened the servos.
He tightened the servos when instructed not to.
Use Alcaline batteries
He tightend the servos, preventing them from working under load.
@@ferret1252 ye sure, so have I. Works great as long as the batteries are 1.5v. They are pretty decent servos
I watch all LMG videos as I just plain out enjoy them, regardless of what the content is actually about. This video however was a complete failure to me. The subject is quite interesting as I would probably be interested in something like this, but the majority of the video is just a time lapse. The overview that I took away was that following instructions is important to the outcome of a task. It's really a failure to the creators of this product that you willingly didn't follow the instructions and then just said OH WELL when it didn't work as intended. Thumbs down. Do better.

Why would you let anyone do that who knows nothing about arduino and Small Electronics?
I mean, he says "You can hack the code"...
I dont wanna hate on him, we all started somewere.
But if you make a Video about it, Please let someone do it who has experience.

What!? He couldn't even get it moving? What a sheer waste of 10 minutes!
Check if IC NE 555 chip is busted. Check that all the power delivery cables are connected to their respective places ( since it's a pre designed kit, there shouldn't be power delivery issue). Make sure you haven't restricted the movement of servos by tightening it.
Come on dude! You expect to do this shabby job at a kid's project and not even finish it... And expect hundreds of thousands of people to watch it!? This is obliterate shit.
Looks like you're using rechargeable batteries - which are 1.2V. So if it takes 4 - and expects 6v on full power and it's only getting 4.8v - combined with tight servos - that would explain why it works when it's not under load, but not under load.
I wish I could give both a thumbs up and a thumbs down. I really like most of the video, and what you said about open source design and manufacturing, and how this would be a great project to do with your kids. But the ending was just so unrewarding. I guess this shows the limitation with this ShortCircuit format and the strictly limited time to prepare and shoot the video. Maybe you guys should make yet another channel for longer-format videos. You could call it ”LongCircuit”.
Make a video about an interesting little robot. Explain nothing. Not interesting information to share. Skip past the assembly nearly entirely. No troubleshooting when it does not work, a great opportunity to go over some good steps to fixing an unknown problem. Why did you put this video out? What were you trying to accomplish? Here's a robot that we're using as a weak excuse for a video. This feels close to UA-cam shitposting. Hell. Why didn't Andy host the video while one or two others did the assembly so Andy could spend time telling us more about the robot, design choices and maybe a quick cut away to what others have reprogrammed other bot kits into.
I'd say that the video was interesting and informative enough (for normal folks like me) to not feel like I wasted time. Now there will actually be some tension when watching something if it actually will work or not. Granted, the comments section helped here.
So, I can accept this video. But definitely this shouldn't become the norm.
One more thing, in their defense: this thing totally wasn't meant to be built in one hour. Yeah, the creaturor surely can do it in one hour. An average Joe, nope, not a chance. It looks more like 4 hours, with no exagerations. So I guess that messed up with their time budget.
I guess this is the down of LTT. Why even make this channel if they are just gonna half-ass it like this.. I really respect them for pumping out so much contents like this, but yeah. Why bother.
TBH, it's kind of disappointing that after all that work he just gives up and wraps up the video.
That's it??? I watched all the video for a mediocre end?
rechargable batteries are undervolting the servos... 4*1.5 = 6volts, 4*1.2 = 4.8 volts...
"It said that it would only take an hour to make this robot, let's see if we can beat that!" + "it definitely takes more than an hour" - then doesn't tell us how long it actually took him.
"Dooblydoo"
I heard him say this and instantly thought "well somebody's and Matt Colville fan"
AvE fan detected
All this building to finish the video like that? Why? 😅
Most rechargeable AA batteries run at a lower voltage than regular AA batteries. Try some LI-PO rechargeable batteries.
It's literally just 11 minutes of a dude tightening nuts and bolts. And somehow failing. What is this video.
