    I just bought mine 2021 Rav4 Prime - loaded XSE wrapped in Black. Let me know what questions you may have from an actual owner. I drive it 90+ miles a day. Few intial comments: It is a very nice handling SUV, has good power, and a great sound system. I already hate the lane assist (works sometimes), love the panoramic sunroof - and mine (after some miles) can get 42+ miles on a charge (enough for me to drive from Orange County to Rosemead). This is a solid buy - but mine was upwards of $60k with upgraded service warranties and being wrapped in satin black.

    I really appreciate the offroad testing even on something like this plugin hybrid.
    One small thing I'd like to point out is the 2.5 hour level 2 charge time requires the car to have a 6.6kW onboard charger which is only offered in the premium package exclusive to the XSE trim. Any XSE without the premium package or any SE trim will have a 3.3kW onboard charger which will charge in about 4.5 hours with level 2 according to the owner's manual.

    • @James-il3tq
      @James-il3tq 4 роки тому +17

      Realistically very few people will be bothered to get a 240v outlet in their garage for a PHEV. Instead 12 hours charge time via 120v will suffice for most when they arrive home for the day. Fully charged and ready to go next morning 😊

    • @wittyname9126
      @wittyname9126 4 роки тому +4

      @@James-il3tq I agree. For most people with a regular work schedule it makes more sense to use the included charger than to spend the money on installing an outlet and getting a level 2 charge cable. But for someone who makes regular trips after work or is stay-at-home and they're shelling out $50k+ up front for one with a 6.6kW onboard charger, they might not mind paying a little more for the convenience of being able to recharge around 16.8 miles per hour instead of 3.5 with the included 120V cable.
      Another thing I'd point out is if you live in a hot climate and are looking to recharge right away after having just drove it the charging system may wait until the battery has cooled off before it starts charging if it detects the battery is too hot. There is a built-in battery cooler that runs as needed when the car is on. This cooler can also be set up to run while the car is plugged in if it needs it but that requires a 240V cable to be connected for that to work according to the owner's manual. It might not be a big deal in most situations but I just thought it was worth noting.

    • @wittyname9126
      @wittyname9126 4 роки тому +7

      @@normt5463 When you factor in taxes, fees, etc. it can actually end up over $50k for a fully loaded one up front.
      Something to keep in mind though is that this qualifies for $7,500 in federal tax credit and some states also have incentives which will knock a bit more off the price too so you can end up closer to $40k for a fully loaded one and towards the low 30's for a less equipped one.

    I have this 2021 Prime and can confirm it feels very quick from zero to 60, and also pretty quick from 60 to 100. The cruise control with lane assist makes LA traffic a breeze, and combined with the HOV sticker, it makes my Long Beach to El Segundo commute a breeze. I went with the XSE model with all the bells and whistles, premium sound, and full leather interior. By far the most fun car I have ever had. The 302 HP is really fun. It takes Dodge Chargers and Ford Mustangs off the line with no problem (except when they catch up at about 70mph, then the dodge charger or mustang drivers are irate that a tiny Toyota dominates off the line.)
    I can confirm that it is incredibly fun to drive. I tried to race my mom in her Tesla Model X in plaid mode, and I was left in the dust. So nowhere near as quick as a Tesla in Plaid/ludicrous mode, but can go much further on road trips; I can make it from LA to Marin County on a full tank without ever having to stop for gas ⛽️. Trail mode is also great for snow, and there is plenty of cargo space for 2 snowboards and all the needed gear.
    It should be noted that the fuel efficiency goes down a little when charging while driving, but it is a really great feature to have, but unfortunately can't charge the battery all the way to 100% (stops somewhere close to 95%).
    One final thing to note: I have had this a year, and after 100+ charges and discharges: my EV range went up from 42 miles to 50 miles in summer but can only get up to 45 miles in winter or cold weather charging.
    Overall, this car far exceeds my expectations 😮

I'm almost certain that when the vehicle is in EV mode, as long as there is sufficient charge in the hybrid battery, the engine will not turn on, regardless of how hard you press the accelerator. By contrast, in "Auto EV/HV" mode, the engine will turn on in certain circumstances (e.g., hard acceleration).

    Nice video, but three suggestions you may try them out, (atleast on my car they work)
    1) Don't usea manual gears in sport mode, the CVT/PSD is way better avoiding gear change simulation.(sport, gear shifter in auto)
    2)Put in Sport before you Stop.

While the system does the work to get you there, let you enjoy nature and get back safe and sound. I see this being a great system with Jeep or Bronco. A "Base Camp" feature where people can charge their phone or laptop, but also save gas and have a cheaper version of AWD. Then using the car as a camper when the day is done.

      We now have 48,K miles on our Prime XSE, no problems whatsoever. Yes, it includes the 'camping' mode, enables HVAC and audio systems to operate without engine running. All accessories are electric, rather than engine-driven. Also, very neat feature here in the summer California sun, we can leave the dogs in the car when shopping or going out on errands; the AC can be turned on with the key fob. We come back to a nice cool car, even in the direct sun. Car is approaching three years old, and still charges regularly to between 47 and 49 miles; we have a solar system, so we don't have to pay San Diego Graft & Extortion rates ($.42 / kWh) to charge. Useful review. Two observations:
    1. Seems there is an LSD on the front which locks up with sufficient wheel spin. That’s a good thing off-road, but would have liked to see it lockup at less aggressive spin in order to avoid risking damaging axels and suspension components. It’s a Toyota, so probably can take the punishment anyway.
    2. @19:20 looks like drive was cut from the suspended rear wheel, which would be a great feature of the electric motor if I am observing that correctly.
    Overall seems to be a genuinely capable soft-roader, but perhaps the price point is a bit high for what you are getting.
