My Flood Control Flume Finally Finished, but Will It Work?

  • I thought I'd finished and published this final installment of the flume project weeks ago.
Some water has always seeped into our basement during heavy, sustained rain. There is a seasonal spring under the floor that we discovered before the floor was poured some years ago and laid drain pipe under the footing to carry that water outside. This winter, that spring flow more than filled the pipe and water came up through seams and cracks in the floor. Something had changed.
What had changed was, the seasonal stream that flows down the mountain above the house was disappearing into the ground. That was new and coincided with the increased amount of water flowing into the basement from below.
My solution was to build a wooden flume to capture the stream before it reached the stretch from which it disappeared. This short video is of installation of the final four sections of flume.

You got that right! I need to go over the entire thing and add bracing and support for next winter's rain.

Well done Eric. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. We'll see next year what transpires. Best of luck, Mate. Back to sawing logs and turning out bowls.

Nice job on the flume. Hope it holds up good for you and keeps you dry for seasons to come! When is the crabbing video coming back? I’ll go chalk out your other channel. Thanks much for sharing.

We've been too busy for fishing and crabbing lately, but I hope to go again soon.

Brrr! Frozen cold hands (and soggy pants legs). Turning shops should only have wet wood, not wet floors.🤣🤣🤣

Sorry, Ronnie, but I know what you mean. I worry when one of my favorite channels goes quiet. I've been busy with my other channel and putting out woodturning videos. Winter work.
