Mingus And Monk: Words And Music
The compositions of jazz greats Charles Mingus and Thelonius Monk have strong storytellling qualities. I'm excited to present this new project in which we focus on tunes which have had lyrics written to them. A pleasure to play with these wonderful swinging musicians. Full details and links to the full versions below!
Malcolm Earle Smith (vocals/trombone)

Recorded at Oliver's Bar, London, UK, May 9 2024
Malcolm Earle Smith's new project “Mingus and Monk: Words and Music” explores the work of two pivotal musicians who bridge the early and modern jazz traditions. A number of songwriters have been attracted by the strong storytelling qualities of the compositions of Charles Mingus and Thelonius Monk. Mingus wrote lyrics to several of his own tunes - Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello have penned others. Jon Hendricks is one of several singers to have provided words to Monk's quirky compositions, and the pianists' intriguing titles have also inspired Malcolm to write some of his own. Combining his skills as trombonist and vocalist, Malcolm is accompanied by a distinguished line-up of players. Together, they celebrate the work of these two jazz giants in a program which explores a wide range of musical emotions, combining words and music in a storytelling, sometimes topical interpretation.
Malcolm Earle Smith has been a widely respected trombonist, vocalist and educator on the UK scene for over 30 years.A stylistically versatile musician, he has performed with a variety of artists including Kenny Baker, John Dankworth, Henry Lowther, Liam Noble and Tony Kofi. He has also toured twice with Bryan Ferry, featuring on two of his albums 'As Time Goes By', and 'The Jazz Age'. A distinctive, swinging vocalist with an exciting approach to scat singing, Malcolm’s acclaimed album 'Vocal Intent' was released in 2022. A passionate educator, he has since 2007 been Senior Lecturer on the Trinity Laban Conservatoire jazz course.
In the 1990s Malcolm was mentored by, and became a friend of Mingus's great trombonist, Jimmy Knepper. On his death in 2003 the family gave him Knepper's horn, - a Vincent Bach 36, which he plays on this project.

We go into a key change for the trombone solo and I also play some backing figures behind Bruno's solo. More details below about the project and more videos to come soon! Here's Charles Mingus's beautiful composition 'Portrait' which we recorded live very recently. This is a new project - read more below! It features great solos from Tony Kofi and Hans Koller. I was fortunate to know Jimmy Knepper, who played on so many of Mingus's famous recordings. When he died in 2003, his family entrusted me with his horn, a Bach 36B. I play it on this track. As one might it...

John Coltrane's Lonnie's Lament - Three Way Stretch (2017) This was a group I really loved playing with! Featuring the superb Liam Noble on piano and the late great Dave Wickins on drums, this was an experience that stretched us all - hence the name of the group! The aim of the group was to draw on jazz tradition in a variety of ways - mixing things up in any way that felt right! We play this C...

Scat singing on Confirmation

Scat singing is one of my favourite activities (as I'm sure some of you know!). And Charlie Parker's Confirmation is one of my favourite bebop heads - it's so joyful and it's great to scat on! This live performance was recorded last June. Chris Eldred, Conor Chaplin and Pat Davey in the rhythm section. Variety is important when I'm scatting . Sometimes I'm thinking percussively in terms of some...

After singing classically for over 50 years I’m finally tackling scat, so I’m hoping these videos help me get over my preconceptions and my fears.
Hope they are helpful and enjoyable!
If this were a blindfold test to identify the vocalist, I might have said Bobby Troup. Nice work.
Thanks Doug, a very nice compliment!

Beautiful music! Thanks both. Ephie is a marvel of self-effacing genius, Malcolm a kindred soul!
Thanks Sam. Ephie is wonderful guy. I have learnt so much from him. Still with a passion for making music at 92! Have you seen the piece on him by 'Jazz Lives'? Very interesting with lots of wonderful music!
@@malcolmearlesmith653 Yes, Malcolm, the Jazz Lives piece put me on to him! It cross-referred me to this : ua-cam.com/video/7gRukYNFLVE/v-deo.html&w=805&h=453 Here Eph succeeds in surpassing the trombonist Bill Rank. Under the influence of Bix, Rank reached for phrases on the trombone on the 'Bix and His Gang' sides involving augmented and diminished intervals, but which never to me sounded as if they quite came off, somehow. Eph takes this approach to its apotheosis on the link above on 'Wolverine Blues'!I had actually also heard him on the Marty Grosz and his Gaslighter sides as well. I hope you can tell him that we Scottish jazz fans are so delighted to see him re-emerge so brilliantly.
@@sammckinstry yes it's a fantastic piece of playing - I'd never heard it before. I will ask him about it when I speak to him about it. I will tell him you enjoyed his recent work too!
Incredible musician.
Great stuff - is this group doing any more gigs in the near future (next couple months)? Thanks.
Wow, this is the real deal. Very rare to see this sort of 'true' musical comprehension from a vocalist.
